As Josep gets lower, his scorpion companion drops down to attack the nearly dead reptile, which manages to viciously bite him with the last of its strength before being finished off. The two of the closer remaining tortoises charge at Josep and his familiar, hoping to score a tasty snack, but are too imprecise to even get close to hitting their prey.

Meanwhile, the remaining shelled creature continues the slow plod across the sandy floor towards its prey.

Josep recast the same spell. The shard of ice flew wide! The wounded tortoise wasn't even threatened by the attack...
  "Damn, really ?"

He then took to the air, hovering only a few feet above reach of the incoming fresh tortoises..

Scorpion fell back to the corner defensively.

Josep shows a small opening to the nearby tortoise when he casts his spell and the creature takes advantage by snapping at him. It catches only one of the mage's illusory doubles but spoils his aim, allowing it to live for a few more seconds.

Once the wizard has again flown out of reach, the remaining reptiles turn their attention to the tiny scorpion on the ground. The furthest away charges in and gets in a solid bite in spite of the arthropod's canny defense. The others are not so effective, though another bite comes extremely close.

You actually trigger 3 separate AoO's for X3 (casting, ranged attack & movement), though it mostly doesn't matter since tortoises don't have combat reflexes and you missed with the ray anyway.

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

From up there, Josep casts something a little more muscular. Two powerful beams flew towards the undamaged tortoises. Josep was fantastically imprecise... luckily for him, these creatures were fantastically sluggish... one of the rays somehow managed to find its way to the tortoise.
  "Damn, damn, damn...."

His ressources were running incredibly thin...

As Josep assassinates another tortoise from the air, the crowd is cheering the flashy effects and booing the lack of accuracy in the attacks. They are clearly interested in seeing something a bit faster paced than these reptiles.

The remaining creatures split their focus again, with one waiting just below Josep's location, hoping to get its jaws on the human, while the other trundles after the much quicker scorpion that's proven to be tougher than expected.

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

I'm going to spend the next 4 rounds circling around the Tortoise, firing rays of frost ; is it ok if we speed to the end of round 19?

With a fly speed of 60", Josep can remain safely out of the threatened area (though still on ground level and thus not technically out of reach), he has unlimited rays of frost.

Scorpion will spend the four rounds circling around the Tortoise with double-moves. Sometimes running even, if things get tough.

(I'm really not looking forward to spending a week describing how I fire yet an other ray of frost at a slowly dying Tortoise)

As Josep stays aloft, flinging bolts of frozen matter at the tortoise, it chases after the scorpion that continues to elude it. Summoning forth a burst of energy, the reptile charges at the tiny creature near the edge of the lava, but fails to connect with the bite that would finally eliminate one of its opponents.

Josep idly moved behind the tortoise. While scorpion ran to safety, he cast yet an other ray of frost.
"Oh come on... Will you die already?" he shouted.

The stout reptile slowly dying, but the crowd was getting bored to death.

The crowd was obviously not into this fight, as many are taking the slow march to death for the tortoise as an opportunity to find drinks and relieve themselves. Meanwhile, the poor reptile continues to trundle after the far more agile scorpion that is it's only possible target.

As an encouragement to remember the rules, Josep feels a sharp pain, the result of some unknown magics prodding him to rejoin the fray below him.

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

argh! I thought keeping the scorpion on ground level was enough! my bad...

Josep descended on ground level and shot one last ray of frost. The tortoise was hit and dropped dead. The wizard sighed loudly and waived apologetically at the crowd.
"Boring I know! But I had to save strengths for my last challenge."

He thus announced that he would face the next opponent, and regardless of the result would quit after that.

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

I'm going ahead with my next prep round

Josep was ready for the last round. He slowly rose, hovering some fifteen feet in the air, and waved at the crowd.
"I promise a more entertaining finale!" he shouted.

Cracking his knuckles, he cast a simple spell to ensure his first hit, and waited for his last opponent to reveal themselves.
Just in case, he drew a rod.

There's some halfhearted cheering from the stands when the tortoise finally succumbs to its icy fate, but it's clear much of the audience lost interest in the slow slog. The announcer's voice calls them back though with an overly enthusiastic, "My, that was certainly a bit of work for our wizardly contestant! But, now that he's cleared that hurdle he's earned himself a few prizes. Oh! And it appears he's already ready to move on to the next creature. I wonder what's in store for him this time?"

A pair of golden vials are placed atop the display holding Josep's spoils, marking his victory over five consecutive opponents. Even more vials and scrolls are added to the growing pile, along with a shield, some darts and an ornate pair of bracers.

Soon after the wizard's preparations are complete, a gigantic tropical tree covered in vines appears near the center of the sandy ring. This elicits some murmurs in the crowd that has started paying more attention after the announcements and Josep's boast that the finale would be more entertaining.

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

the last one!

Josep hovered in the centre of the arena, spinning to let everyone see him in the crowd. He was still surrounded with three illusory doubles.

Then the huge plant-like creature burst into existence. Thank the gods, the wizard was knowledgeable on this type of things, and knew how to deal with them. It still seemed demeaning...
"A tree?!" he shouted, "for my last fight, a big stupid tree? I thought we had stooped to the lowest there was in terms of mobility with the tortoises... apparently not."

He pointed his rod at the enormous plant and uttered his incantation. Two classic but powerful beams of cold rushed towards the trunk, and hit right where the main branches join, freezing the wood to its core.

The crowd chuckled at Josep's apparent annoyance with the giant tree. It groaned and creaked as the icy tendrils of the wizard's spell grasped at it, but it seemed to shake off most of the encasing ice and did something that trees aren't normally known for. It trundled a bit closer to the flying mage and then began swaying, vines dancing in the air. The crowd seemed fascinated by this turn of events, and even Josep could feel the subtle pull on his mind to just sit back and watch the oddly graceful display.

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

Josep laughed at the ridiculous tree dance, and urged the crowd to do the same. Sadly,  a fair share of the audience suddenly thought the ancient plant creature was actually a mundane tree! Josep thus seemed to be the laughing stock then, for trying to freeze a plain old and perfectly harmless palm tree...

"I care not! I kill the tree!" he barked.

And thus he did, summoning his last powerful spell, he froze the same section of the tree, which shattered under the impact. The palm tree crumbled down under its own weight, and danced no more.

Josep pointed his rod to the sky to claim victory over the Monster Mind.

this might be a good time to ask, does Scorpion count as an ally in terms of Teamwork feats? We have the "Tribe mentality" feat, which means if either of us succeeds on the check, we can both use that result. Irrelevant to the result of the fight, obviously, but good to know for next time.

Josep has just one magic missile left... thus stops after this CR6.
Out of curiosity, could you tell me what the CR7 would have been?

Re: Endurance Challenge II #3: Josep Gavinho

With the shattering of the tree creature's body the crowd snaps back to reality just in time for the announcer to call out, "And there we go folks! It appears our wizard friend is spent, but that was certainly a flashy and satisfying finish!" There's cheering in the stands as Josep signals the end to his challenge. "And, of course, we have some fabulous parting gifts for our contestant," continues the announcer as a large pile of potions is added to the box of prizes, along with some arrows, a gauntlet and what appears to be a hand on a chain.

CR 7 would have been 4 creatures you don't have the skill to identify :-P. (Without changing anything they would have brutally murdered you long before you could kill them all since you don't have any meaningful damage output left.)

As far as teamwork feats go, yes, familiars or companions can be used as an ally if they also have the feat in question. They do not, however, get the bonus feats from guild membership, as they are not player characters and can't be members on their own.

I just need a consumables statement and for you to let me know which of the prizes you want to keep, and which to sell. The prices listed are the full value, so selling would get you half that. Once that's done, I'll get this closed out. (In keeping with the new character creation rules limits, the CR 5 prize won't count against the item limit. Anything else you keep would, as appropriate.)

 Yay!

The wizard bowed to the crowd, altogether quite satisfied with his performance. As of now, he knew he had gotten about as far as he could have. With more time and experience, he could perhaps hit the next stage...

He gathered his things and talked shop with the prize manager.

Josep is level 7, used no consumables (and beat CR6!)

Thank you Sehly for this fight, it's been great fun!
