Re: Monster Hunt #13: Ankou, Thraxis, Krumm, Nyssa vs. Monsters

I really have to contest all that constitution damage. There's no way that gets to go off without a save. Even Ugrim got saves vs Con and Str damage during his Endurance match forever ago against that swarm of leaches and they effectively do the same thing as the Stirges.

Granted, that was forever ago and maybe things have changed since then, but I'm going to ask GM Sehlysdre's opinion on this matter just to get a double GM ruling on it and then we'll go from there.

In the mean time the Dragon will take an AoO against one of the charging stirges.

16:49, Today: Madam Opal rolled 14 using 1d20+10 with rolls of 4. AoO vs stirge. (Hit)
16:53, Today: Madam Opal rolled 26 using 2d6+16 with rolls of 6,4. Damage.

The dragon chomps down on one of the stirges, killing it instantly.

Re: Monster Hunt #13: Ankou, Thraxis, Krumm, Nyssa vs. Monsters

The swarms gave a save because they don't roll to do the damage, they do it just by being there (so the save is added to avoid an automatic success effect).  The stirges have to hit to apply their damage (which means it is not an automatic success effect) and it doesn't apply any conditions, but damage (as Arkrim said, so it doesn't get an extra save to reduce the duration).  Anyway, calling for a GM ruling again is totally your call.

To amend my earlier post because of the mean dragon biting the poor stirge to death: 6 con damage ,down from 7. (Assuming Sehlysdre doesn't overturn Arkrim's ruling on the damage.)

Re: Monster Hunt #13: Ankou, Thraxis, Krumm, Nyssa vs. Monsters

OOC: Okay, I double checked it. So, Madam Opal is right. This is a weird one:

Ability Score Damage
Diseases, poisons, spells, and other abilities can all deal damage directly to your ability scores. This damage does not actually reduce an ability, but it does apply a penalty to the skills and statistics that are based on that ability.
So technically, "ability damage" is a misnomer. It's not damage. It's an ongoing penalty which means it does actually require a saving throw for half (or negates in this case since it's only 1 per). I think I learned this before and just forgot. Pathfinder actually changed ability damage to no longer be true damage. It's just a penalty and "damage" is just the name of it. *eye roll* Weird but there you go.

Re: Monster Hunt #13: Ankou, Thraxis, Krumm, Nyssa vs. Monsters

Considering every other point of constitution lost effectively deals [creature's HD] damage, it's not any stronger than your average sword hit...
Shouldn't it be half damage rounded down, minimum 1 ?
If I cast and fireball that deals 1 fire damage, would you negate the damage entirely on a successful save?

Re: Monster Hunt #13: Ankou, Thraxis, Krumm, Nyssa vs. Monsters

Regarding it being damage:

It calls it damage, even when talking about it's effects. "This damage" does not actually reduce an ability score.  So, the effect of the accumulated damage is a penalty.  (Which is good, because then you would have to wait 4 levels instead of 1 day to have a point fixed.)  Instead of reducing the score, the damage's effect is to penalize things based on the score once you accumulate two points of the damage.  (Which is good, because it doesn't hurt even or odd ability scored more, it just hurts everyone at the same increment.)  Also, the damage stays until it is healed not for a duration.

Finally, from http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG...ge-penalty-and-drain (our official source), there is a separate paragraph dealing with ability score penalties, which it says are different.

quote:
Diseases, poisons, spells, and other abilities can all deal damage directly to your ability scores. This damage does not actually reduce an ability, but it does apply a penalty to the skills and statistics that are based on that ability.

For every 2 points of damage you take to a single ability, apply a –1 penalty to skills and statistics listed with the relevant ability. If the amount of ability damage you have taken equals or exceeds your ability score, you immediately fall unconscious until the damage is less than your ability score. The only exception to this is your Constitution score. If the damage to your Constitution is equal to or greater than your Constitution score, you die. Unless otherwise noted, damage to your ability scores is healed at the rate of 1 per day to each ability score that has been damaged. Ability damage can be healed through the use of spells, such as lesser restoration.

Some spells and abilities cause you to take an ability penalty for a limited amount of time. While in effect, these penalties function just like ability damage, but they cannot cause you to fall unconscious or die. In essence, penalties cannot decrease your ability score to less than 1.

If, however, it is ruled to still be a penalty (and that the minimum damage is 0), I'd like to re-do my last turn.  (I would not have spent two full turns summoning creatures that have no in game effect other than to ask for the opponent to please roll a 1, and penalize themselves.)

OOC: Opal is functioning as referee, so she'll make those calls. I'm just clarifying disputes. No time. I think it's weird too but the way they changed how it works, its clearly a penalty and not damage (as odd as I think it is they still call it damage when they do that, it seems counter-intuitive to keep a name that's clearly a mislabeling).

Hmm.  Something occurred to me . . . can you actually 5-ft step up?  It takes double movement to go up, so I wasn't sure.

Hmm.  Something occurred to me . . . can you actually 5-ft step up?  It takes double movement to go up, so I wasn't sure.

I'm fairly certain you can. I don't remember where it was or who was involved in the fight (Probably me) but i think the ruling was no matter in which way you 5-foot step while flying, can move one 5-foot square as long as the check to do so is made. (As opposed to being able to take a 5-foot step down through 2 squares or not being able to ascend 5-feet at all with a 5-foot step.)

Now to be a referee on what has just gone down. Theres a part of me that says no your stuck with it. However, the good person inside of me says you can have your turn. So instead of deciding one way or another myself, I'll just let the gods of fate decide it for me.

Thraxis, roll 1d100. if its 51-100, you may redo your turn. If its a 1-50, the swarm of stirges stays and i'll be rolling 7 fort saves every round to negate the con "damage."

speaking of con damage, I'm going to retroactively roll vs those first two stirges con damage as well.

23:13, Today: Madam Opal rolled 18,25 using 1d20+10,1d20+10 with rolls of 8,15. Fort save vs con damage x2. (Dragon passes both saves.)

Thraxis, let's see what the gods of fate have in store for you.

Re: Monster Hunt #13: Ankou, Thraxis, Krumm, Nyssa vs. Monsters

(Remember gang, fire attacks do 1.5 the amount of damage rolled. Kruum, that means your attack against the dragon actually dealt a total of 61 damage. Dragons are tough, but the younger they are, the easier they are to kill unfortunately.)

The dragon looks mildly displeased as Krumm's first ray strikes in and causes it to lose it's concentration on flying. flapping it's wing's once more, it ascends into the sky and unleashes a flurry of attacks upon it's aggressors once more, focusing his attacks upon the Bull. The dragon, however, uses one of it's wings to pierce though the unconscious Ankou's heart, ensuring that he shall not be revived to pester the dragon further.

The dragon's time was short however, he could feel it. He let out a howl of anger towards Kruum, indicating him as his next target should he fail to kill him.

Nyssa moves to where she can get a better shot at the dragon, then lets another arrow loose that also flies alarmingly close to Elaith.  This arrow strikes the dragon true, burning with a supernatural fire against all those of dragonkind.  While the dragon is momentarily distracted, Elaith launches her attack, savaging the dragon with two bites and a claw, bringing it to the ground.
