Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

An umbral mass unfolds into a tangle of spidery legs and horrible mandibles, rising up to a monstrous height to bring its cluster of glowing red eyes to bear.

Latro smiles at the site of the monstrosity he has at his command.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

In the corner opposite to Latro's evil and monstrous spider, a creature of similar size appears. She is is reptilian, stocky with short stout legs and a reddish hide. On her shoulders, a tangle of necks protrude, sending a number of comparatively small heads some twelve feet up. He slithering mass of snake-like heads makes it difficult to count... But there appears to be almost a dozen of them.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Finally a small blue-green dragon swoops into the arena, settling on the ground as the anti-flying magic takes hold. It rears back and roars into the arena... but no sound issues from its throat.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Commanding his umbral undead to make quick work of the dragon while it was still unprepared, the Nightskitter launches an umbral web of shadow stuff towards the brine dragon, encasing it in energy draining webbings. The Nightskitter then climbs the wall to make itself unavailable for a counter attack by the dragon.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

From the guildmaster's lounge, where Josep, Hiro, and Latro are controlling their beasts, the battle seems scary... all three creatures have impressive tools in their repertoire, and in a battle between three the tide and odds can change very swiftly...

Josep's chosen monster is slow. Desperately so. His first move is to gallop as fast as possible to come up close with the others.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Better brush up on those negative levels Hiro, cause theres going to be a lot of them.

quote:
Negative Levels: -1 to all d20 rolls per negative level, -10 HP per negative level, -1 to AC/CMD per 2 negative levels, -1 effective HD per negative level. The HD penalty affects caster level, character level for spell resistance, class level for uncanny dodge, HD vs. sleep, color spray and similar effects and treats your CR as lower for the purposes of arena immunities.

Because the negative level effects your effective HD, the DC for your breath weapon is one lower, which means its a DC21 reflex save for half damage, which i just so happened to roll.

12:17, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 21 using 1d20+14 with rolls of 7.  DC21 Reflex.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

The night skitter has barely enough time to contort itself to dodge the dragon's breath. It shoots another strand of umbral webbing at the dragon to continue weakening it. After that, it spooders down the wall until its safe enough to drop without repercussions and then spooders away from the dragon.

The Hydra rushed straight into the mist, but instead of attacking the dragon as one might have guessed she would, she emerges on the other side, still a neutral element in this battle of monsters.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

So Josep, regardless of if your hydra can drop into the -1 portion of the pit and then emerge back out on the upper platform as part of your run action, I'm going to have to rules you for a moment.

quote:
You can't run across difficult terrain or if you can't see where you're going.

Specifically the part about "can't see where you're going" is what I'm more concerned about than anything as obscuring mist is very good about not letting things see other things beyond 5 feet, which you designated ending point happens to be.

So what you mean to say is, when you get tired of chasing spiders and hiro's dragon is the only thing close enough to use 11 breath weapons on. ;P
Also, when round three happens and the hydra still hasn't attacked anything yet.

I'll my get a post up tonight after work.

OOC: Here's an issue we should probably resolve now before it comes up. Just keep the discussion in OOC while we continue to duke it out.
There are two things my nightskitter can do that are not banned under our current rules. One of them is climbing, the other is air walking.
As it stands, air walking is similar to flying, but it is not flying at the same time as it comes with it's own set of restrictions on what can and can't be done.
As for climbing, we all know I can brace against the force walls and climb up that, but can I climb on the walls on the edge and not on the conners? Logic says yes, because a nightskitter is a spider and the spell spider climb says the subject can climb and travel on vertical surfaces or even traverse ceilings as well as a spider does. Now even though looking at entries for any spider like monster, none of them say that the monster can traverse vertical surfaces with their climb checks but it is generally assumed to be so becuase their freaking spiders.

So my question is this - Is it reasonable to say that as a spider like creature with spidery legs and spidery everything that the nightskitter can easily traverse the force walls and ceiling of the arena with his spidery climb speed?

If you beat the DC for the ceiling with your climb check, yes. Having a climb speed does not mean you automatically succeed on every climb whatever the conditions. The ceiling is a force effect, so not very grippy I reckon.

I rekon with the ability to take 10 regardless of the situation on any climb check and that check being a 45, the nightskitter can beat most climb checks the arena can throw it's way.

but i shall do my due research in the arena and see if i can find any indication what the climb DC might be.

Edit: to quote the arena map thread
quote:
Default DC for all obstacles is 10 + average level of PC combatants (if PvP) or 10 + total CR of encounter (if PvE). Unless noted otherwise, this is the Climb DC for walls, Acrobatics DC for tight ropes, Swim DC for water, etc. Certain "hot spots" may have +5 or -5 to DC as determined by the GM.

so now the question is is this a PvP match or a PvE match? if PvP, the DC is 24 (using our monster's HD as their level) if PvE, our total CR is CR 15 (Cause three CR12s is equal to a CR 12 + 3 encounter according to the SRD) so the DC to climb the wall is 25. In either case, i can easily beat these DCs even rolling a 1.

Are these calculations acceptable to all those participating?

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

According to our game post, the walls are masonry so I assume it should be an easy climb. The ceiling is probably a different beast altogether, as it is a force effect and not a surface (it's just something pushing you down).

My read is that the walls are climbable (this is explicitly stated in the map thread) but the ceiling is not.

quote:
TYPICAL ARENA
The large arena platform is a 100ft.-long, 100ft.-wide 50ft.-deep cube of dirt and rock. Surrounding this area is a giant force cube which goes 50 feet over the highest floor point and 50 feet under the lowest floor point as well (small arena is 50ft long, 50ft wide, 25ft deep, 25 ft tall). The force cube is enchanted with epic anti-magical barriers that not only make them immune to magic but also bar teleportation and dimensional gateways from moving through them. Summoning creatures into the arena and teleportation within the arena function normally (you just can't escape). The ceiling allows weather, water, sound and energy through, but not objects or creatures. The force walls can be climbed only by creatures with spiderclimb but the corners can be braced against (Climb DC20). Small throwable rocks litter the arena in just about every square and boulders line the out edge. Opponents begin on opposite corners of the arena as far as possible.

The webs do not expire. They were created and thrown, and now you're stuck in them until you break free. :D

I'll have my next turn up in a moment.

Also, just as a quick reminder to everyone

quote:
Negative Levels: -1 to all d20 rolls per negative level, -10 HP per negative level, -1 to AC/CMD per 2 negative levels, -1 effective HD per negative level. The HD penalty affects caster level, character level for spell resistance, class level for uncanny dodge, HD vs. sleep, color spray and similar effects and treats your CR as lower for the purposes of arena immunities.

Noticing that Josep's hydra is clearly making its way towards his Nightskitter, Latro orders that it feel the same fate as Hiro's dragon.

Forming the umbral webbings once more, the Nightskitter blasts the Hydra, entagaling it and draining it's lifeforce. The undead monster then skitters away to the corner to keep itself out of reach of the hydra, should she somehow find a way to escape its bindings.

Nightskitter: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestia...htshade/nightskitter

Round: 3 (25)

Position: A15/C17 to A18/C20

Actions: Umbral Webbing vs Hydra (Standard), Move to A18/C20 (Move)

132/157 HP
SR 23
DR 15/ Good and Silver

Effects:
Detect Magic - Constant
Magic Fang - Constant
Desecration Aura, 30 ft - Constant, DC21
Haste - Round 2/12 (+1 attack, +1 AC, +1 Reflex, +30 speed on all forms of movement)

Uses
Umbral webbing 3/8, Channel Negative Energy 0/9, 6 1/day SLA - 1/6, 3 3/day SLA - 0/3, 0/3, 0/3

Dice rolls:
16:41, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 35 using 1d20+17 with rolls of 18.  Umbral Web vs Hydra TAC 9.
16:41, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 4 using 1d4 with rolls of 4.  negative levels, DC 21 fort halves, min 1.
Take 10 climb check: 45

Summary: The Hydra is now entangled. It may make a DC 21 fort save or gain x more negative levels for the time it is entangled by the umbral webs. A successful save halves this amount to x/2. The Dragon is no more entangled that it previously was and the DCs to break free of the bindings remain the same. DC 28 Escape artist check or a DC28 Strength check as though caught in a net. Should the Hydra succeed, she losses all negative levels gained through the umbral webbings.

OOC: Now everyone has negative levels!! WooHoo!!!! I'm so generous! :D

Just so you both are on the same page with your negative levels and how the webs work, you can attempt to escape them as a full round action with an escape artist check or a strength check. DC 28 for both. If you manage that, you lose your negative levels and your entanglement status. No draw back, no nothing, right back to full stats beyond any damage accumulated while entangled.

However, until you do, you are entangled and are effected by each negative level gifted to you. (Yes, gifted. cause i'm such a nice spider. ;P) Each negative level reduces all D20 rolls by 1, reduces your max hp by 10 per level, and reduces your effective HD for spells and other HD based abilities (such as breath weapons saves and what not) by 1. In addition, for every 2 negative levels, you reduce both your AC and CMD by 1.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

I'll work on my turn - as an FYI level drain is 5 hp not 10:

For each negative level a creature has, it takes a cumulative –1 penalty on all ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, the creature reduces its current and total hit points by 5 for each negative level it possesses. The creature is also treated as one level lower for the purpose of level-dependent variables (such as spellcasting) for each negative level possessed. Spellcasters do not lose any prepared spells or slots as a result of negative levels. If a creature's negative levels equal or exceed its total Hit Dice, it dies.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Quick question, would these webs have a hardness and HP? Are they a physical thing that can be attacked? I kind of feel like this ability is only half-fleshed-out, and is missing a few key rulings. At this point it sort of seems like a permanency magic effect, since they do not expire. Normal webs or nets can be attacked and take damage, so I'm thinking these should be the same?

RAW you can only break them with a Str check. I think you get a size bonus on that check though. The ability is nasty indeed, and porrly written I think.

I do not believe so. As the entry in the nightskitter gives no indication on how much HP it has as opposed to a standard net, which does, the only rules as written way to escape the webbing is to succeed the strength check or the escape artist check.

In reply to Latro Dectus (msg # 45):

Aye, which is why I said it was poorly written :) If it's an object, it can be sundered. If it's not an object, it's a magical effect and should have a duration. If it's neither, it's a force effect.

The arena does have errata for force effects having hardness/hp - perhaps those should apply?

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Well, the ability is a supernatural ability, which means it is indeed a magical effect.

So my apologies for not applying a duration to it.

I believe it is fair at this point to allow all those affected by the webs to make a DC 28 reflex save to half duration from 15 round to 7 rounds for each set of umbral webs placed upon you.

The only question now is if when the umbral webs are placed a second time, such as in Hiro's case, does the timer on them reset?

Regardless, you're free to make the save before any modifiers to your rolls that would have come into effect after the webbing took hold.

Oh yeah, and even though the webs are magical, because they are a supernatural ability, they are not effected by spell resistance.

Sorry, got lost in the commonwealth.

Doesn't the fact that they're supernatural make them NOT a magical effect? The fact they're treated like webs gives more credence to the idea that you can just sunder them (just like any net/web).

I wouldn't bother. Let's stick to RAW (even if in this case, it's more of a RA-poorly-W) and wrapped this up fast, so we can move to better things. Such as killing a freaking old wyrm.

The night skitter finishes it's summoning and a greater Shadow appears next to joseph's hydra, though it looks greatly surprised at it's inability to fly and the fact that it's incorporeality is being suppressed. None the less, the Shadow still attempts to drain the hydra's strength with a simple touch.

Meanwhile, the nighskitter summons a cloud of deeper darkness that enshrouds the undead spider.

I think the shade is toast regardless.

as for that ice storm, heres a question. Because some of it is bludgeoning damage and some of it is ice damage, would my DR reduce the bludgeoning damage?

I've never encountered this sort of situation before so I truly have no idea how to handle that.

As the ice and cold come raining down upon the nightskitter, the creature does absolutely nothing to avoid the damage. as soon as the dust settles, the nightskitter looks no worse for the wear, having shrugged off all the damage from it's natural defences.

With it's shade dead, the night skitter launches a nother set of webs towards the hydra to try and keep it's breath weapons under control.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Lowering itself down, the night skitter suddenly springs forwards and bites down on the weakened hydra then leaps back the way it came, giving the hydra no time to react the the spider's sudden attack.
However, a misplaced spider leg results in the nighskitter biting nothing but air. Regardless, the night skitter is still able to make it's escape.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

With opposition closing in on both sides and it's webs wearing off on the dragon, Latro's nightskitter makes do with what it has and lunges forwards to strike at the hydra once more. Wagering that it could deal with one breath weapon a lot easier that it could deal with 11, the night skitter strikes with great furry in an attempt to kill the hydra outright before jumping back closer to the dragon than before.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Technically, hydra is at -2 hp after the poison damage and the fast healing. So you're still alive, but unconscious with a chance to actually get back up and fight should the residual cold poison damage not be enough to keep you below negative hp.
However, I'm about to fix that.

Probably later today or tomorrow though.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

go ahead and save vs. this round's poison damage if you would. I need to gauge just how soon i need to kill the hydra.

08:05, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 3,9 using 1d4,2d6 with rolls of 3,3,6.  Poison - Charisma damage, Cold damage x 1.5 - Dc23 fort.

a failed save results in 3 charisma damage and 13 cold damage after weakness factored in.

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

The nightskitter springs away from the dragon after having sustained two breath weapon attacks in a row and proceeds to end the life of the unconscious hydra lying on the arena floor, putting a good bit more distance between it and the dragon.

09:18, Today: Latro Dectus rolled 2 using 1d4 with rolls of 2.  negative levels, DC 21 fort halves, min 1.

Take 10 climb check: 45

Summary: Umbral webbing, yadda yadda.

OOC: Oh, certainly. I agree that the intent was there, alas it was not explicitly written out so advantages were taken. >:D
And sure,y ou can have your fly speed over land. Just remember you can't fly while tied up in umbral webbing. ;P
And as much as i'd love to just end it all ASAP, thats a very high AC for me to hit so i need to umbral webbing it down a little. Also, that breath weapon is bad news for me.
Also, also, remember that there's a 60ft radius of darkness around me and your dragon, surprisingly, can't see through darkness.

Current penalties to Hiro's Dragon

Re: Monster Mash #8: Hiro vs. Josep vs. Latro

Narrowly evading the breath weapon, the night skitter retaliates with more webbing.
