Sara: The Hand

"He stepped out. He'll be right back." Sara frowned in annoyance. Where did he go, anyway? And shouldn't he be back by now? Did he screw up his drug deal or something? "What are you guys doing, anyway?"

" Jesus Christ. We don't have time for this. Get the fuck outta the car kid!" The man suddenly yelled at Sara. He grabbed the door handle and yanked the driver's side door open.

Sara's shock gave way to anger. "No I won't!" she took out the knife and brandished it.

The man stepped back, as if surprised by the gesture and the appearance of the knife. Then his lips curled back to reveal a snarl.

In a calm voice he said "Get...the..FUCK...out of the car kid." There appeared to be a threat in that tone. Even now Sara could see that the man's hands were balled up into fists on the sides, his posture rigid.

This was scarier than the Tattooed Lady. After all, that was kind of a dream, or felt like it at least. This, though, was real, no two ways about it... Only, fear just made Sara dig in her heels more. "Go away," she muttered darkly, still brandishing the knife.

"Whoa! Hey!!!" Dad yelled, coming upon the car. He was running from the dilapidated building and was carrying a black garbage bag that was about one fourth filled with something that appeared to be light the way Dad was carrying it.

Dad ran towards the car. "Sara, get in the back seat, I gotta drive!" Dad said with urgency.

"YOU!!!" Dad yelled at the man. Get in the passenger seat.

Sara quickly hid the knife, then got out of the car to get into the back seat. She wasn't going to show it, but she was wary of the man. Not like she'd never been yelled at before, but this seemed kind of different and more dangerous. It made her hate him more.

As Sarah looked, the man and Dad started to talk about how the 'job' had gone. The man told Dad that bringing 'this kid' wasn't part of the plan. Dad told the man to relax and then the two didn't speak for a while. Finally Dad started talking about how he and the man had gotten 'a lot of money' from the 'job.'

"So 2K for the job, but Benny has to take his cut." Dad explained, turning the car onto a road that Sara was unfamiliar with.

"But what are you going to spend it on?"

"Benny? He doesn't have anything to do with this joint. I tried to tell you that we don't need him. If he's getting 2K for just pointing out the spot, I want 3K for breaking it in. A finder's fee isn't worth 3K." The man took out a cigarette and cupped his hands together. Sara heard the crisp, flicking of a lighter, saw the flame make the end of the cigarette into a burning ember.

"Fine." Dad said "One point for Benny. And the rest for us."

He pulled the car up to what looked like an old, dilapidated house. Then he put the car in park and said to the man "What are you gonna spend your share on?"

Sara looked at Dad. His car was already plenty fast when he was driving it. His friend probably wasn't too different. Maybe that was why he needed several, because he kept crashing them? And what did he mean by fast women? Cars were probably still faster, though...

Also, Benny... did she know who that was?

All of the adult talk that Sara had heard between the two men sounded just like that: Talk between two men that were talking about things she hadn't experienced and about people that she hadn't met. Nothing could be understood by what she had heard, other than that Dad and this man seemed to be involved in some kind of possible criminal activity.

"Alright, let's go."
Dad said, getting out of the car and approaching the building.

The three opened the door of the old abandoned house and Dad turned on the light to reveal a neatly organized room. Unlike the exterior everything seemed to be clean and minimalist. There was a table in the middle of the room with some kind of small machine on it, four black folding chairs around it. The walls were painted a pale, blue-gray.

A coffee pot lay on the counter of a nearby kitchen in which emanated the distinct smell of pancakes.

"Go ahead, sit down Sara." Dad instructed. "I brought you hear because your growing up. And its about time you see how money is made in this family. I don't' want you to say anything to your mother about this. That goes without saying. Understand?"

He did say it, though. Sara sat down in one of the chairs. "Yep, got it," she told Dad with a curt nod. Despite herself, she was starting to feel a little bit curious about this.

There was a flash of anger on Dad's face. The kind of anger that suggested he might do something. But instead he was silent for a second. Then he breathed in a deep breath and said.

"We all start somewhere." And then he turned to Sara.

"This is a counting machine."
He said pointing to the machine. "It counts bills of money."

He sat down tat the table next to Sara, the folding chair giving a little creak as he settled into it.

"We just stole 20 thousand dollars from a safe. In that building while you were waiting the car. Now this 20 thousand dollars isn't all ours. It has to be divided up into four. But first, we have to count it. Count it and then divide it."

He put the garbage bag on the table. "Understand everything so far?"

Sara glared at Dad's friend, then nodded at Dad's explanation. Then, she asked: "Four? There's you two and Benny..." She raised an eyebrow.
