Lore and Legends

Time Before the Fall
Modern Awakened have barely scratched the surface of knowledge that Mages wielded before the Fall and this is true even more so for the Mages of New York. Even so the discovery of hidden vaults and long unheard of Artifacts are cause for celebration among the Pentacale. Only a handful of such places have been discovered in the modern era and even fewer have have their Mysteries unraveled.

The Sleeping City (Neolithic Period - Approximately 1630’s)
The small tribes which lived along the rivers that would later make up New York City were frequently assailed by Spirits and Ghost among other horrors and much like in other parts of the world the Awakened attempted to defend and guide their people aligning with the Darshana like many other groups.

A story which survives to today tells of a devour of life that commanded beast that were warlike and monstrous. For centuries the disparate Awakened were obliged to pay a tithe of life to this creature defeating it only when all the Darshana cake together and banished the creature and its minions.

Unity was short lived however as the Seers of the Throne saw these Mages and would bend them to the Exarchs will or eliminate them. Resistance was short lived as the Seers proved to powerful to resist following the conflict against the devour of life.

Reign of the Exarch (1624 - 1735)
Slowly the Seers erase every magical tradition within the city that does not comply with their own, despite this some Cabals contour with their own practices in secret. These hidden enclaves will go on to become the foundation for the Free Council. By the close of the period the so called Nameless Orders operating in the city could openly defy the sovereignty of the Seers of the Throne.

The Great Refusal (1735 - 1827)
The simmering conflict between the cities Nameless Orders and the Seers becomes one of the venues for the conflict ultimately leading to the Great Refusal with the Nameless Orders organizing into the Council of Free Assemblies and allied itself with the Diamond Orders forming the Pentacale.

The Long Struggle (1827 - 2012)
The struggle between the Pentacale and the Seers of the Throne begins in earnest within the city with direct control passing between each faction several times throughout the period.
  • The First Tyrants War (1939 - 1945)
Organized resistance by the Seers falls into disorder as the various Ministries interpret events happening around the world differently giving the Pentacale time to recover and consolidate its gains. The war only comes to an end when a new Tetrarch comes to power and the conflict comes to a temporary end.
  • The Key of Blood (1969)
A Cabal of Mages serving the Mysterium discover a Verge that imprisons numerous Bound. The Cabal fights past the creatures retrieving an Artifact. After the Mages retreat with the Artifact a strange energy begins to emit from the Verge and those Mages responsible for discovering the Verge perish under mysterious circumstances. Eventually the Guardians of the Veil hide the Artifact with only those on the Council being privy to its location.
  • The Great Debate (1970 - 1985)
The Pentacale argues amongst itself over what to do pertaining to the Verge and the mysteries surrounding the deceased Mages, the Mysterium and the Free Council desire answers while the Guardians and the Arrow would rather leave well enough alone. The Silver Ladder ultimately sides with the Arrow after a series of violent attacks against the Pentacale by the Seers which ultimately lead to the death of the then Hierarch. The Councilor Ombretta steps down to put aside the internal divide afflicting the Pentacale.
  • Tyranny’s End (1970 - 2012)
The Council appoints Samael Hierarch, the Arrow Mage has one clear purpose upon his appointment and that is to end the oppression of the Seers. Gradually he leads the Pentacale to a decisive victory where he personal killed the Tetrarch and his apprentice the Centurion banished an Avatar of one of the Exarchs.

Lore and Legends

Legends of the Forsaken
The Forsaken seldom keep written records of their history preferring to pass on knowledge to the future generations through oral storytelling much to the displeasure of the Iron Masters. As such the stories presented bellow are taken as truth even though older stories should be taken with a grain of salt as opposed to newer tales.

The Age of Impergium
Before the Forsaken the land was ruled by the Pure Tribes, the Fire Touched offered humans as tribute to the Spirits of the Shadow, while the Ivory Claws pitted humans against one another breeding them for strength. At this time though the Predator Kings were the most powerful Tribe between the trees and rivers, they culled groups of people with impunity, slaughtering any human without cause or concern. For centuries the Pure thought they had crafted the closest thing that they could to the Hunters Paradise. The Impergium as it would later be called  with reverence by European Pure and disgust by their Forsaken counterparts was only challenged when the Storm Lord known as Snow Walker began leading his pack against the Pure.

Hopelessly outnumbered Snow Walker had to resort to cunning to achieve his early victories, but as word spread others joined in the fight Broken Arrow lead his Blood Talons in head long defiance of the Pure and their purposeless Slaughter, Storm Speaker lead the Bone Shadows  against the Spirit allies of the Pure, Spider Eater and the Hunters in Darkness worked to restore the Gauntlet, while Red Hand and the Iron Masters encouraged the masses of humanity to resist the tyranny of the Pure.

The Forsaken grew in such strength that they eventually were able to preform a forgotten ritual to restore the Gauntlet that had been so damaged by the Pure denying their enemies their greatest assets. With the real testing of the Gauntlet the age of the the Impergium is said to have ended.

The Age of Blood
The conflict went on between the Forsaken and the Pure with neither side clearly dominating the others and matters were only further complicated when European Uratha made their way to the new world. The stark cultural differences between native and European Tribes eventually lead to a conflict with four different sides competing for territory.

With the Forsaken so distracted Spirits ran rampant, it was the Fire Touched of the Pure that found common ground first and bound the Pure factions together. The Pure now united conjured up a Beshilu Hybrid of great power with hopes that such a terrifying creature would tear down the Gauntlet.

The Iron Masters were first to realize the intent of the Pure, the Iron Master Otello Sorbo, approached the Storm Lord River Watcher with the information. River Watcher realized the folly of the Forsaken fighting against one another and failing in their oath, he called together the first tribunal, calling Storm Lords from both factions representing each Auspice to meet. Following the first Tribunal the Forsaken were unified and moved to strike out against the Pure and their monsters.

The cost was steep but the Host was destroyed and with their weapon gone the Pure lost heart and abandoned the battle. The taint of the Host still haunts the city to this day and some among the Pure believe that if they gather enough Shards they could reconstitute the monster, for the Forsaken particularly the Storm Lords they take it as their duty to keep the shards from gathering.

The Age of Discord
Conflict between the Forsaken and the Pure is nearly constant as the city grows around their conflict and the population diversifies and is reflected in the faces of the Uratha. Heroes rise and fall becoming legends in their own right. Countless horrors emerge spurred by the conflict or conjured by the Pure. The titanic conflict between the Tribes resonates with the growing swells of Essence that spurs the Shadow to change and shift and even in time some Wounds leading to some Bale Hounds to infiltrate the territory. The emergence of these Wounds remains little more then a footnote in the tales of the Forsaken, suggesting their existence is a metaphor for arrogance.

A Uratha occultist named Sebastian O'Mannin is uncovered to be engaging in bizarre ritual sacrifices of Uratha both Pure and Forsaken sometime around the turn of the nineteenth century as industrialism grew and the city further swelled in the population. A group of Blood Talons hunted down the Moon Shunned killing him, before he passed he revealed he had produced several copies of his findings although none were ever found.

Ghost Wolves in Chinatown rise up claiming the territory as their own earning rebuke from the Iron Masters but nothing is done as the conflict  with the Pure.

The Age of Horrors
At some point in the 1970s the prison that is the Void is broken and the Idigam first appear in the city, their bizarre nature of the horrors is unlike anything the Uratha had ever faced. The Forsaken and Pure each strive to defeat the Idigam but neither side finds any success and casualties begin to mount on both sides.

The Bone Shadow Gloria Morillo realizes that the Uratha cannot fight the Idigam the way they are and eventually convinces leaders among the Forsaken and the Pure to cooperate and fight against the Idigam. Eventually she uncovers a way to strike at the creatures and ultimately leads the coalition a pyric triumph.

With the Idigam something of an afterthought, it took little time for the coalition to break down and the Forsaken and the Pure begin fighting yet again. The conflict only came to an end when a meeting of the Pure were ambushed by Ghost Wolves and subsequently driven from the city aside from the occasional incursion.
