[Event] Perimeter patrol 5

The goblin had a head start, but the trail was easy to follow. After two hours, you hear some noise up ahead, and those with darkvision see a pack of wolves guarding their kill-- a certain goblin.

Initiative! (Only post if you go before the wolves, please. The rest of you will go into my next post.)

[Event] Perimeter patrol 5

Round 1
Malkus moves forward, and throws a javelin at a wolf, narrowly missing.
Enialis moves as well, hurling a bolt of fire which scorches wolf 5, causing yelps of pain and fear!
In the dim light of Enialis' spell, Xannan can easily make out the forms of the wolves, and his dart strikes true, killing the beast! (You don't have disadvantage.)
The remaining wolves rush forward, attacking in pairs.
Two wolves attack Xannan, but both miss.
The other two attack Malkus, one missing, the other hitting for 10 piercing damage! Make a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Initiative:

Odilon 1
Malkus 16
Enialis 16

With her third torch in the left hand and the drawn rapier in the other, Chloe overcomes her hesitation. She hustles forward next to Malkus and attempts to pierce the first thing with fur crossing her glance.

There are so many of them!

Oh well, not for long. One quick step ahead, one sudden strike.

Chloe moves to F11 and uses her action to attack wolf 2. As a finesse weapon, the dexterity modifier (+2) is added to the attack and damage roll.

Odilon was glad the group had taken a short rest, it allowed him to clean and bandage his own wound. But now as they stared down the maw of so many wolves he wondered if it would do any good. Never the less he rushed forward (I 11) and held his hands out in front of him as he spoke the divine word for Fire!

OOC: Odilon is going to go move to I11 as his move action, then he will cast Burning Hands diagonally which I think will allow him to hit 3 of the wolves (1 2 and 4).

Burning Hands is a DC 13 Dex save and will do:

"Well, we're supposed to come back with proof" replies Chloe. "And something tells me a severed head fits that bill quite right."

Her eyes wander over the piles of ash that used to be wolves. "The old man must be a hoot at barbecues" she comments jauntily before trying to wipe the blood off her rapier. She glances over to Odilon and grins.

It's not a wry or sarcastic grin. It's not a grin that tells someone they're "not so bad" or "kinda alright I guess". It's a genuine grin of excitement and youthful joy. There is a sparkle in Chloe's eyes, much like the morning light on the rippling surface of a lake.

With the threat gone, her hard-boiled demeaner slides off her and with a teetering step - half walking, half bouncing - she begins to make her way towards the dead goblin in the back to join Malkus.

"Look at you!" she says to him with her squeaking voice. "All trashed up! Are you always the unlucky one on trips like these?"

It shouldn't be worth a roll to loot a dead goblin while carrying a blazing torch but I'mma do it anyway in case I needed one after all.
21:13, Today: Chloe Nellington rolled 15 using 1d20+1.  Investigation: that poor dead goblin dude.

Odilon caught Chloe's grin, and returned it. It was nice to see the exuberance of youth...and also nice to receive a compliment.

"I have exhausted myself save for minor magics unless we rest. But this ends one portion of our trip, and have we not finished our patrol?" Odilon scratched the side of his head, but not vigorously so as to not affect his hair.

With a casual distaste, Malkus hefts his sword above the goblin's corpse and decapitates it with a downward swing. He watches Chloe while he reaches down to grasp the foul thing by its hair.

"It happens to the best of us. Better that it happens to me than to someone squishier."

He wipes his sword off on its clothing after she's done looting it, and abruptly stands with his prize.

"Ready to move on when you all are."

The goblin's body was in better condition that you'd have expected, at least before Malkus decapitated him. His pack however had been torn open, and the roast torn into by the wolves. Coin glinted in the snow under Chloe's torch, 15 copper pieces. THe goblins leather armor had been practically destroyed. but he still carried a scimitar, a shortbow, and a quiver of arrows. Poor thing never even had a chance to draw them before the wolves got him.

Your patrol now complete, you return to town with your grisly trophy.

Including the Xp for the wolves, the patrol quest, and a small bonus for tracking the goblins, you each get 175 xp and two downtime units!

Re: [Event] Perimeter patrol 5

With swift fingers, Chloe bags the 15 copper pieces and stocks up her own quiver with what the goblin failed to use. She wrinkles her nose as she sees the torn roast, leaving it be. Hey, what did she expect?

She isn't really interested in the other weapons (besides the second quiver with the now presumably 19 arrows) so she just gestures towards the scimitar and the shortbow for someone else to collect. Just the thought of leaving these perfectly fine tools behind makes her heart ache.

Enialis Siannodel:
"I hope we get paid extra for this minor job. Miss Nellington, would you like us to escort you back to town."

"It would be appreciated, sir elf. I'm getting cold and it would be nice to rely on someone's nightvision for a change." With quick steps and visible breath she marches back the way they came.

175 xp noted.

Re: [Event] Perimeter patrol 5

Finding the way back is easy considering how many footsteps the five humanoids left behind. After a while she begins to open up a little more and under a thin layer of earnest professionalism (that she keeps up until the very end!) there is a spark of jolly silliness in her voice.

Chloe stays close to Enialis (and Malkus if he had chosen to join) both of whom she seems to have taken a liking to. She tells weird second-hand stories about the sea, hums songs from the north, and tells jokes that were originally told in Orcish so they don't make any sense after translating them into Common or Elvish.

She also asks the patrol group about themselves: How often they face foes like these, what they usually encounter and whether they have ambitions beyond just walking around Smith's Gambit every day. Strangely, she stays away from deeper topics such as where they come from or why they joined the settlement ... only an insight check could give hints in that department if interested.

As they head back, Malkus casts a sidelong glance at the merchant girl. "You seem to be rather well-traveled. It sounds like you don't typically have a lot of people to talk to, huh?." He listens patiently to her barrage of questions, trying to keep up with her train of thought as well as sneak answers in edgewise, where appropriate.

He relates to her that this is his first patrol here, so doesn't know what all to expect other than sahuagin raiding parties and apparently goblins and wolves. Having just arrived in Smith's Gambit himself, he hasn't put a lot of emotional effort into planning future endeavors.

"Lately there has been only Julius", Chloe notes. "But he is actually good to talk to. He is pretty considerate and plans ahead ... even though his actions seem to reflect the opposite at times." She pauses mentally and ruminates. "It's kind of a shame. I'd love to support him in his strengths but ... I always end up bossing him around." She shrugs. "Force of habit, I presume. He is technically my employee."

Enialis tends to be a bit nervous in conversations especially when it comes to a professional merchant, he remains silent as well and answers with the questions he can keep up on.

"I've been here for quite a while now, I think this is the third one so far. We usually face wolves and goblins, but their tends to be more dangerous creatures roaming around the settlement. As for my ambitions beyond patrolling, well I think I'm fine with walking around the town as long as it helps me understand and improve my magic abilities. And besides, their are other jobs that don't involved patrolling so it won't be the same thing everyday."
