[Downtime] One Man Wolfpack

The largest of the wolves, not the one you had charmed, replies, and your magic interprets its growls and body language thusly:

OOC: You will need to stay in the woods with this pack for several days (which won't affect your involvement in other quests but you will need to make camp and roll for exposure each day,) making DC 10 Handle Animal checks four times a day, and spending 2 downtime units a day, until you have 10 successes or 5 failures. If you successfully cast animal friendship on the biggest wolf each day, you can have advantage on the rolls for that day. You only get 3 attempts today, as you already spent almost four hours looking for these wolves. After 10 successes, the wolves are tamed, and will follow you, but not necessarily defend you, though until trained, they will still be hostile towards any potential threats to themselves. They won't follow commands unless you have speak with animals active when you give them (and even then, you'd need a Handle Animal check. During this time, I will roll random encounters as normal, and the wolves will act as NPC party members. If you wish, we can make this a more involved process for you to roleplay out, in which case your actions can earn you advantage without needing to cast animal friendship (or they can grant disadvantage). If you take this option, rather than random encounters, I will craft specific challenges for each check.

Verbannt didn't bother nodding, as the wolf wouldn't understand.  He just signaled that he would prove himself the master of any challenge, and moved to join the rest of the pack.  He moved slow, not wanting to spook the other wolves.

[Downtime] One Man Wolfpack

Since the elk provided enough meat to feed the whole pack, there was no further need to hunt for the day. The pack took you back to their den, where each of you took turns keeping watch, resting, or patrolling the immediate area.

The day passed this way and a few hours before dusk, you hear two large creatures moving nearby, and the pack becomes agitated, and growl. Your speak with animals spell wore off hours ago, but you know that whatever is out there, the pack senses it's a threat. A moment later all four rush in two pairs, attacking as a two dire wolves come into view!

OOC: Not the wolves won't actually move to these positions until their initiative. If you go first, they'll still be next to you.

Verbannt let out a curse.

He had hoped to find a Dire Wolf, but he had already found his pack.  His Beatlore was good, but he was not nearly skilled enough to bring both packs under him.  He drew his bow and snapped off a shot at the nearest Dire Wolf, drawing blood.  Then, with a tearing of flesh and bone he hurled himself at the beast, his own maw elongating and growing as the Fleshshaping took him.

Action:  Fire shortbow at DW2
Bonus:  Wildshape into a Dire Wolf
Movement:  Throw myself at DW2

[Downtime] One Man Wolfpack

Round 1
The first wolf attacked the dire wolf to the west, drawing first blood.
The second seized on the distraction, tearing a chunk from his flank.
The third wolf leapt at the eastern dire wolf, but was headbutted out of the way.
The fourth wolf took the opening, grabbing the dire wolf's throat in his jaws, and pulling him down to the ground.
Lukas fired at the first dire wolf, hitting a soft spot in the belly. (OOC: I changed your target because otherwise you'd take disadvantage firing at a prone target. Hope you don't mind)
The first dire wolf turned to bite the wolf on its left, taking a huge chunk out of it, leaving it bleeding to death on the ground.
The other dire wolf stood up and bit the wolf who had brought it down, seriously wounding the smaller wolf.

Round 2
The dying wolf took a step closer to puppy heaven.
The second wolf howled in anger, tearing at the dire wolf's throat and bringing it to the ground!
The third wolf once again failed to hurt the larger beast, but distracted it enough for its partner to take another bite, though the dire wolf remained on its feet.

That was, until the wolf to his right flank surged forward with a harassing bite that caught his prey's attention.  He seized the opportunity, and bit down hard, a great gout of warm blood filling his mouth and sending his heart to roaring with adrenaline.  With a savage rip, he tore the other wolf's throat out, and turned to face the remaining interlopper.

Lukas, now in the form of a dire wolf himself, tore the throat out of the one who had wounded a member of his pack-to-be, then turned to face the remaining foe.
The surviving dire wolf, now realizing how hopelessly outnumbered and outmatched it is, disengaged from combat, and began to flee. The remaining wolves followed a short way, barking and growling, before they returned to their dying pack-mate. They begin nuzzling him and licking his wounds.

Verbant shimmered and wavered, the sound of bones snapping and flesh tearing filling the air as he reshaped his flesh back into his original form.  He had not thought to prepare any Herblore that morning, but he still had the work Tidelan had given him.  Without hesitation he stuck his fingers into the dying wolf's muzzle, prying the creature's jaws open.  With his other hand he brought the potion to his teeth and bit the cork, pulling it out and pouring the liquid down the dying beast's exposed throat.

The potion stopped the bleeding immediately, fully closing the smaller wounds, and scabbing over the bigger ones. Though the wolf's fur ranged from light-gray to black, the fur where the magic elixir had healed his injuries was a uniform white. The wolf woke with a start, confused, and licking his chops in an attempt to get the unpleasant taste of the thick fluid out of his mouth. The other wolves, however, realized that you saved their alpha, and the other wounded one licks your elbow and whines.

"You are the bravest pack I have ever met, what possessed you to try and face two such as those?  I have no more tricks to mend flesh, should you take such a fight again, but I will have more tomorrow.  Where is the place of safety for you to go?  I will go with you."

[Downtime] One Man Wolfpack

You understand the wolf's communication to mean:  He curls up to rest, leaving Lukas and the other wolves take their turns at watch.

Two hours later, the wolf is proven right, something big, loud, and strong crashes through the forest nearby on two massive legs, and noticing the dire-wolf corpse, rushes straight towards the camp! Lukas recognizes it as an ogre. He knows such a creature is likely little match for him and four wolves, though there is significant risk of losing a pack member in a fight. However, an ogre could count their intelligence score on the fingers of one hand, if they could count that high, and wolves aren't as smart as ogres. They do seem to have some sense, though, as they stay behind Lukas and growl at the giant.

The wolves stayed where they were and growled at the giant (as mentioned before)
Lukas shouted a warning then transformed into a dire wolf and moved forward, waiting.
The ogre looked confused at Lukas' words, and more confused at his transformation. It didn't like being confused, so it rushed forward to attack! Before it could strike, Lukas leapt forward, and bit it. The ogre howled in pain, and lashed out blindly, missing Lukas!
The wolves moved forward. (Lukas will have advantage on his next attack, thanks to pack tactics.)

Lukas bit deeply into the ogre's gut. It was struggling to stand, and he could see the terror in its eyes, but it held its ground.
The ogre tried to swing at Lukas, but it could barely lift its club, and the nimble lupine form easily dodged.
The wolves worked together, bringing down the massive brute.

Congratulations! You get 113 XP! The ogre carried 14cp.

Also, since I seem to have forgotten to grant it earlier, the Dire wolves netted you 100 xp. Note it separate from your normal xp, and don't count it toward your total until you get back to town.

For helping the wolves survive both of these fights, I'm adding a free success to your taming progress. You have 3 to go!

Your rest passes peacefully. You wake with the wolf you charmed sleeping cuddled up next to you. Two of the others are cuddled next to him, and the fourth is standing sentry.

The next day, you hunt with the wolves, and you notice, by the afternoon, they have begun following your lead, rather than the largest wolf's.

Congratulations! You have tamed a pack of wolves! They are not trained, but will follow you wherever you go unless restrained. They will allow you to restrain them. They will not attack on command, but will attack anything they deem a threat to the pack, or that they want to eat. You can use Wisdom (animal handling) to stop them from attacking anything that isn't threatening them. They will take a share of experience for any combat they take part in. (They will level, as well.) Once they are trained, I may also increase their ability scores to be in line with PC's, so if you wish, you can use them in place of party members without handicapping your party.) Training them will take no skill checks, only downtime units. Commands are taught to the entire pack at once, though they can be commanded independently once they learn them. You must first teach these ones (in whatever order you choose:)
