Protect the Watchtower Builders

Skyeye quickly eats her own lunch then starts stripping the branches from her spruce trees; piling the green branches carefully into piles then stripping the bark from tree trunks and coiling the strips and placing those in a sack.  Using her axes, she cuts the tree trunks to the lengths she needs.

Testing out her new shovel, she digs holes for the two upright poles.  The holes are wider than she needs and the handle of the shovel is a bit short for her.  However, the holes are deep enough and she is able to easily fill in the holes around the poles and stamp them down tight and snug with her boots.

It is short work from there to making a her temporary abode; using not only the spruce trees she had brought but anything else she can salvage from that which was dropped into the badger hole.  She shakes her head at the wasted material.

Setting her things in the lean-to; she moves to the other side of the cleared area and paces out, and marks with stones, a circle roughly twenty feet in diameter and inside that circle she will place four stones roughly three and a half feet apart in a square.

OOC:
She will construct her lean-to at B6 and B7 on the map.  Where she starts to mark out her hut's location is at E4 through H7.

Protect the Watchtower Builders

Adam finally staggered his way back. He was really going to have to make a higher-tiered disk that he could ride around on under its own power. The current versions did not do very well when it came to forward momentum. Still, once he made it back he presented Skyeye with a copy of his map. It was extremely easy to read, had a legend showing what icons meant what, and small fold-out tabs that provided what landmarks had been left at the various resources around her place.

He also made sure she was aware that he had a copy of the map in the event her's became damaged in any way and needed another made. It was what scribes did after all.

Protect the Watchtower Builders

After lunch, the building continues. Skyeye gets her lean-to set up, and marks out where she will put her hut. After a few more hours, you all notice a commotion coming from the west, and the builders stop for a moment to listen, as well. Three people are frantically running through the woods toward the hill, one screaming in pain. When they reach the bottom of the hill, you see it is two men and a woman. The woman wears tattered robes, and the men both wear chanmail. They keep running east, along the south side of the hill, and stop after about another hundred feet when the screaming man falls to the ground, and you can hear them talking.

"Is it following us?"
"No, Liam, I think it stopped to eat Lorenzo."
"AAUGH, I THINK MY GUTS ARE FALLING OUT."
"Shut up, Lyle!"
"Hells! I can't heal that. Hold on, Lyle! Lemme see if there's any Hallas Blossom to be found around here."
"AHHHH! MAKE IT STO--" A bolt of fire streaks from the woman's hand, striking Lyle in the side of the head, finishing him off.
"Lilith! Why did you do that!"
"I was getting sick of his screaming. He was useless to us now, anyway. Lemme try that scroll I swiped from the old fool." Lilith pulls a scroll from her pack, reads the incantation, and Lyle stands back up, but something is off about his movement. Something strikes Adam as familiar. "There, now he's useful. Hey, I wonder who killed these goblins?"
"Lilith, I thinks someone's watching us from on top of the hill..."
"Run, stupid!" They continue to run east, but they keep having to stop and wait for Lyle, who is moving slowly and awkwardly.

"Back to work, ya lazy bums!" The foreman says to his builders and the building resumes.
"The rest a youse," he says to the adventurers hired to defend them, as he points down the hill, "why donchas head thattaway a couple hunnnerd feet, and if those youts attack, these bums won't be distracted by the brawl." You all know that if the three do decide to attack, you'll have nearly an hour to wait for them to get up the hill at the speed you're going. It seems likely the building will be finished before then.

Adam looked at SkyEye and pointed at the hobbled one. "Class one undead. They take a hit but are rather slow. Speaking from personal first-hand experience you absolutely need to know who is a necromancer around your home. One loitering necromancer can be an army at your door in a few days." He didn't say kill, not all necros are bad but most of them are.

"The female is the necromancer?" Skyeye paused before turning to the other two.  "Sai. Azu.  Let us go convince these three down there to stay away from our hill?"

With that she moved to her lean-to and get her javelins and sling them on her back and pick up her great axe.  Readied, she started heading down the hill.

Sai nods wordlessly and moves to follow the others.  As they begin the descent, Sai's owl swings around to observe the direction from where the three came.  "I'm not sure what they're running from, but we don't want to be caught between the two, I'm sure.  We'll keep an eye out," he says, nodding toward the airborne owl.

Sending my familiar to keep an eye out for whatever is/was chasing them.  If she can't find anything, she'll keep an eye on the side of the hill so the builder's aren't caught unaware if anything tries to approach.  If she finds anything, she'll fly close enough to convey the message to me.

"I am not suggesting we abandon the hill.  Just to go down halfway and take up a defensive positions."  She was concerned that whatever they were running away from might come up the hill, but the three running past the hill were not hiding their trails at all, so perhaps it would continue to chase them if it came this way at all.

"I could not get a good look at the wounds on this Lyle person, so I can not tell what manner of beast or man injured him so.  I think the bigger threat is not the three running away, but what they are running from."

So, they are running (dashing, actually) at a total speed of 40, but you can expect them to slow down again as soon as they think they've lost you. You can make it halfway down the hill in as little as 3 minutes (if you move fast, taking -5 on passive perception) but if they see that you're following, they may change their course, possibly towards Smith's Gambit. You could also climb down the steep side of the hill (at half speed) and still easily overtake them no matter which way they turn. How do you want to handle this?

I'd go down the steep side if it's more of a sure thing.  Not sure how important it is to confront them, vs making sure they don't approach.  Will defer to Skyeye on that.

The hill is 200ft tall at the highest. the slope on the shallow side is an inch vertically for every foot horizontally. On the steep sides, it is steep enough to climb down without an athletics check, but going up would require one.

"I would imagine that bashing them until they are in pieces would work.  But that is not important.  We must decide.  We have been charged with protecting the builders.  Those three seem more intent on running away from whatever is chasing them.  I say we should protect the hill from whatever is chasing them in case it decides to break off and come after us instead.  What say you?" Skyeye asked firmly.

Adam shrugged, "I am always game for getting another mages spell book. And you need to make sure they are either just passing through or are resident. A necromancer can become a problem quickly. May have been a one shot scroll though."

Merely nodding her head, Skyeye moved to the side of the hill they could descend that would quickly allow them to intercept the trio.  She then methodically made her way down the side of the hill.

OOC: Taking the second suggestion from message 43 and moving at half speed to climb down the steep side.
