Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

The rain never really let up. It just died down for a bit last night and started up again about two hours before dawn. A cold, stinging rain that comes in gusts that occasionally rock you on your feet as it hits you from the side. Even as the sun came up you don't think it really warmed up, it must be hovering around 10ºc and even less with the wind chill. Despite your rain gear you're soaked to the skin again and your feet are covered in thick mud up to your knees.

There's that smell that never really left you from this place. Everything is burnt. The buildings are burnt, the ground is burnt. The fucking mud is burnt. Even the air is burnt. Even more so now the nuclear firestorm swept across the landscape. You feel the air is burnt because there's still smoke everywhere.
Over to the east, right in front of you through the ruined buildings, you can hear sporadic shooting; shots interspersed with bursts and punctuated by the occasional rattle of explosions. It does your head in, NATO is far to the west. There's no one here to shoot.

You've been moving cautiously over Highway 7 and its surrounding shattered buildings, trying to get in closer to the city, hop a bridge over the river and into the open country on the wrong side where your options should open up. The road is really badly battered, this place looks like a cross between Stalingrad and The Western Front from World War One. Flooded trenches cut across the road in places and it's obliterated by sees of craters in others. Here and there the burned out wrecks of vehicles dot the area in little groups. There's long stretches of concertina wire poking out of the mud and rubble next to collapsed trenches, driving is hard going.

And of course there's all those empty windows in the shattered buildings. Who knows what's out there and who's doing that shooting. They could be watching the vehicles now. Thinking that you've given up on the highway and drifted south, trying to skirt around the citadel of Fort Szczęśliwice where all that trench fighting took place back during the Siege, keeping back from the fallen-in trenches and their old wire entanglements, their blown-in bunkers and weapon emplacements. Any of these could seriously ditch one of the vehicles. About noon a halt is called, Fat Ass is running hot and needs to cool down.

Suddenly, about two hundred metres to the east in the ruins of Fort Szczęśliwice light weapon fire starts up and you clearly hear women and children screaming over the rain and wind . .

In reply to Alex Edgars E4 (msg # 2):

"Men's screams were bad enough, but hearing children and women screaming make me sick. Thanks for making me the bad guy, Edgars."

I scramble up into the commander's position in Fatass to take a look around. I fumble for the binocs with my chilled fingers to see if I can locate the source of the screaming or gunfire.

"Well, you might be right about that Edgars, but when we do get there, we can make sure they don't do it again. It's probably just some local tough guys intimidating the locals."

Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

Karol Zalewski left the back of the 'jankee' APC after the halt was called, moving to pull security amid the devastation of the Warszawa suburbs.  Since they were not under fire, he moved without haste, taking more care to adjust his poncho than looking for the enemy.  The sounds of small arms and screams moments later changed that.

Zalewski oriented himself toward Fort Szczęśliwice and took a knee behind some rubble.  Moving the two hundred meters through this hellscape would hard.  The debris, mud, flooded trenches, and the other obstacles meant that just getting eyes on what was happening would be ugly.

Of course the whole bloody war had been ugly.  Why expect anything more?

Still, the cries of men in battle wasn't what they were hearing.  Those were women.  Those were children.  Screaming in the rain.

Sure, the American's had brought some women with them, as did the Soviets, but children?  These people were likely Polish - his people.  Even those misguided enough still support the communist deserved to live if they did so in peace.  While women and children often suffered in war, that didn't make it right.

"I volunteer, please," Lolek said as he looked back to the Lieutenant.  Zalewski was a survivor first and foremost, but his conscience wouldn't, nay couldn't, let him turn his back on the screams being carried on Włochy's fell winds.

Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

Since Lt. Burris is in the commander/gunner's position of the APC, Richard 'Dick' Cox was kind enough to sit down in the troop compartment to give the LT room.  Being restless by nature, he wasn't keen on just sitting on his haunches waiting for something to happen.

Looking to the rear of the APC where Karol had exited to provide security with the rest of the group, he felt compelled to give him a hand.  Tapping the side of his M16's magazine, it felt full and he made sure the safety was on before he looked up at Lt. Burris.

"If Karol is volunteering to go have a look at what's going on, Dick will go with him."

Giving his rifle's magazine another tap just to be sure, he looked through the open door.

"Dick wants to see what all the hollering is about anyway."

During the halt, Hakala shuts down Fatass to conserve fuel and allow her to cool down, noting current fuel levels. Removes the CVC and rubs his hand through his hair to get the blood circulating in his scalp. Scans the area the front and sides of the M113, particularly the terrain that may be hiding someone or something that may take out their vehicle.

Upon hearing the nearby gunfire and screams, he glances back over his shoulder at Lt. Burris.

"Shall I fire her up, Eltee?"

Hoping he wouldn't be the first of them to draw the eye of a hidden sniper, Dick exited through the rear door of the APC.  Keeping to the left of the armored vehicle's bulk, putting the machine between himself and the fort, he crouched down low and looked forward and towards the fort, taking care to slowly scan the muddy mess of trenches and bunkers for any sign of movement, however so slight it might be.

Re: Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

The vehicles are brought up behind heavy cover. In the past this might have been a Soviet artillery position until the lines pushed up to the city. The berms are still here giving both good cover and a good view over the intervening ground at the cost of being knee deep in muddy water.

After deploying the shrill screams continue, moving behind the fort's walls. There's desperate fighting going on but the gunfire is tailing off making it difficult to understand what the situation is.

Across the trenches are the heavy ridges of the old pre-WW1 fort's walls, long lines of earth ramparts devoid of vegetation. You know this fort took heavy fire back in the Siege, there's supposed to be some big tunnels or something under it but they were attacked by bunker-busters. No one has any idea what's behind those long ramparts.

You quickly scan the ground, time is of the essence if you want to be there in time do anything rather than see what happened as the corpses cool. There's two flooded "saps", trenches leading to No Man's Land, leading from the positions below you that can be used to rapidly get up to the fort's walls. Adjacent to these saps are breaches blown in the walls and your guts shrink of what it must have been like for the guys going through those breaches back then only to encounter the fanatical Polish defenders.

The LT sees a half-buried T-72 up near your position, all its ERA blown off and obviously cooked. Wondering how the hell it got where it is he looks back behind its path to see what appears to be the handles sticking out of the mud of assault bridges. The T-72 must have been part of a counter attack that breached these lines. The assault bridges look intact enough to carry the M113 although the Humvee would never make it.

Taking any of these routes would bring you through the muddy shit to the base of the ramparts. There you could take either the north or south breach into the fort's "parade"; the flat area inside the fort, or you could go around the rear to where there should be proper entrances.

The north route through the trenches appears heavily flooded, in some places right up to the parapet. It would be slow going but unless the water hides obstacles would be the safest but probably the most tiring. It leads to the north breach.

The south route through the trenches is where artillery has damaged the trench network the most. While it's not as flooded as the other route there are places where you'd be visible from the ramparts. It would be faster but risker. It leads to the south breach.

The vehicle route is fastest and riskiest, you'd literally be at either breach in minutes. However you trade safety for speed, it's exposed the whole way. However you've seen no sign of activity on the ramparts themselves and the heavy rain should mask your movement somewhat.

The rain hammers down, pounding on the roofs of the vehicles, your helmets and backs and the muddy terrain. Through the shifting curtains of rain the fortress looms in front of you, a dark and dangerous bulk which you have no idea of its layout until you get inside.

Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

Studying both approaches closely, Dick decides that the southern route would be the least unpleasant.  While they would be exposed in places, he didn't mind trading a certain amount of risk for speed.  Plus the northern route was flooded; there could be land mines, punji sticks, or lord knew what else under that water.  And he didn't like getting his feet wet unless he was at the beach...

That reminded him.  He was long over due for R&R.  When the time came he was going to ask Lt. Burris for a weekend pass.

"Dick thinks we should enter the fort from the south."
Looking up at the LT still sitting behind the APC's machine gun, Dick added.  "We should send a scout team forward to make sure the way is clear.  Dick can go with them or Dick can take over his machine gun again."

In reply to Tom Logan E5 (msg # 14):

"Dumbrovsky, you get anything on the radio? Does it sound like we've been spotted?"

"As much as I'd like to roll on in there and lay the hammer down on these assholes, I think it's too risky to send the vehicles in without making sure the way is clear first. But ,we need to get there quickly. Dick, come here and man the fifty-cal and provide overwatch for us as we move up. Dumbrovsky, hang back as well and help Dick until we get to the rampart and give a signal for you two to move up."

Burris drops out of the commander position on the M113 and tucks the binos in his jacket and grabs his carbine from stowage.

"I think the rest of us split into two teams and bound up the north trench. We'll be more exposed, but the fifty should keep their heads down.

The lead team will be Logan, O'Leary and Hakala. One of you should grab that shotgun, there'll probably be some close-in work. The second team will be myself, Lolek, and Edgars.

The rest of the team stays back with the gear and provides security. Stax, you take up position in the fifty once Dick displaces. Once we hit the rampart, we should be able to provide cover for Dick and Dumbrovsky as you move up the South sap."

Burris slings his M4 and grabs the two handheld radios, tossing one to  and putting the other in his webbing. He takes a moment and looks everyone over to make sure they're on board, seeing if anyone points out any holes in this plan. "Its risky sending everyone up one approach, but there isn't much time to be sneaky."

"Sound like a plan? If it gets to hot, we pull back. Approach in bounds. Lead team, don't get out of earshot."

"I understand," Zalewski said quietly with a nod.  As the team moved, he kept his focus on possible threats to the right of them.  Whenever they stopped, KKZ took a knee, his wz.89 carbine at his shoulder in a depressed muzzle position.  Scanning the terrain meant taking everything in, not focusing on any one area for too long, with the goal of affording his peripheral vision the chance to notice any kind of movement.

Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

Dombrovsky checks the air waves, there is indeed powerful chatter all around but all of it seems in code. Most of the voices seem to be speaking Polish but he thinks he occasionally hears Russian and a variety of voices speaking English but once again it's usually terse statements of the phonetic alphabet.

You move down into the flooded trenches. The coffee-coloured water is icy cold and comes up to your belts in some places and underfoot are all sorts of obstructions as the parapet, the concertina wire and the detritus of war have fallen into the trench. However it seems the rain covers your approach and the teams slog through the mess and out into the former No Man's Land as no sign of you being spotted can be discerned. Here a keen eye is kept out for minefield markers, the trench lines were often protected by belts of mines, but none seem to be in this area - at least that you can see. The low ground in front of the fort was defended by belts of concertina wire in wooden hurdles, some of them six coils high. However several lanes have been blown through it or smashed down by heavy vehicles leaving a tangled mess that's possible to clamber through but several of you receive nasty cuts and torn BDUs.

In front of you looms the massive fort, its thick earthen ramparts are unrecognisable as the clean cut walls of before the war and instead are a pock marked high bank studded with craters. The two huge breaches, blown in possibly by aerial earthquake ordnance, have massive rubbles piles around them that have to be clambered over. The forward teams make the base of this obstacle and call up the second team. They move up the southern route, through the deep muck and by the time they come up they're head to foot covered in a thin layer of mud. You grasp you weapons with chilled hands, listening to the sporadic fire inside the fort. As you peer into the rain you suddenly hear a high pitched screaming and then a pistol shot rings out and it goes silent again.

Inside the fort there is another rampart and in here the mess of war is indescribable. Everything seems to have been shot with a variety of weapons and pock marks and craters have covered everything. The killing ground between the ramparts has several belts of concertina wire and there are mine warning signs everywhere. The NATO attackers laboriously dug saps straight into the fort at a great cost in human life and you follow these two trenches through the semi-dry moat and up the internal rampart. You clamber up this muddy trench, sometimes on hands and knees, to the top.

It's been hard going for thirty minutes to get here. You are covered in mud, bleeding from superficial wounds and soaked to the skin. The adrenalin starts to pump and you enter the hyper-vigilant pre-combat state that will cost you dearly after the fight in mental exhaustion. Your mouths are suddenly dry when you hear the odd shot, any one of those supersonic rounds could blow a hole in you you could push a beer can through. However it seems you are still undetected.

The top of the rampart was the fighting position. It had stone and concrete positions for old muzzle loading cannon and these have been strengthened by WarPact gabions and sandbags. The sap debouches through a large hole blown in them, you guess the NATO troops used a significant demolition charge to breach the position. Clambering past the broken concrete strung on rusting reinforcing bar and scattered and burst sandbags you look out onto the interior of the fort.
The wide interior of a fort is called a parade and the level of the parade of Fort Szczęśliwice is about two metres below the top of the interior rampart. Looking out you can see that at the rear of the fort is a more traditional walled structure but this has been reduced by massive artillery and air strikes into heaps of rubble and broken walls. You do know this fort like the other Warsaw forts had extensive underground galleries of some sort, the are probably flooded to some degree you guess.
The parade has been used for farming by the looks of it. The craters have been filled and rain-softened rows of earth. Here and there across the field are scattered bodies, most in the ubiquitous Wz. 68 Moro both the Polish second and third echelon troops wear and the vast amount of Polish civilians wear as well. They lie in heaps, obviously some have been gunned down as they ran, you don't see any weapons near them and none of them wear webbing - the tell tale signs of civilians.

Through the pouring rain you can see that there are five armed upright figures on this wide flat area; three are dragging some bodies into a pile and another is stripping another body nearby. The last is looking out over the area, some sort of Kalashnikov at the ready. The rain is too heavy to clearly see them but they seem to also wear the grey uniforms but you immediately note they have red and white armbands.

Caution takes hold. No one in their right mind stands out in the open like this without some sort of cover.

In reply to GM (msg # 34):

Logan moves slowly over to whisper to the LT, "Sir, no idea who those guys are, but the amount of dead civvies tells me that they are the bad guys. We need to deliver some justice here but I am concerned they are being covered by someone we cannot see from this position.

I suggest setting up a base of fire here so we can whack them if necessary while my team attempts to work around the north, trying to see if there are further enemy elements present."

Burris takes a hard look at the man picking through the dead body on the parade, and suppresses the urge to shoulder his carbine and put a three-round burst into his back as Logan moves closer.

"Yeah, sounds good. Keep your heads on a swivel. We'll stay here and provide overwatch for you, but if it looks like you're spotted, we're going fangs out and lighting 'em all up."

He looks Lolek and Edgars and whispers "Ok, let's get some cover and provide overwatch. It'd be nice if someone could creep over to the corner of the rampart to the south to get a look at the rest of the parade and try to get eyes on Dick and Dumbrovsky"

Burris then sidesteps a bit to this left to get his torso behind a pile of rubble while he looks over the vultures of war. Has he seen that armband before?

Anxiously watching the fort where the rest of the gang have gotten themselves out of sight, Dick amused himself by muttering the lyrics to 'The Old Gray Mare'.  Peering over, but not through the sights of the M2 Browning, he was hoping he wouldn't have to draw unnecessary attention to himself by opening fire.  He was also hoping they wouldn't need to take the APC around to meet the others inside; having to help navigate the M113 around would be no easy task and would require a great deal of observation and awareness on his part lest they hit a land mine or some other obstacle that would lead to even more work.

Tapping his fingers on the side of the M2, Dick kept watch for any sign of the others.

Observing the fort for friendlies or enemies.  Awareness 4 rolled 12 using 1d10+4.

He'll take extra care to move unobserved to the position the Lieutenant indicated.  Once there he'll make maximum use of cover to see what there is to be seen.  Unless there are additional bad guys/sights of interest by the south ramparts, staying low he'll take aim on any bad guys that are clustered together with the M203.

Cold and wet, Lolek moved from cover to cover as the team entered the fort.  He frowned as he looked over at the unarmed dead - these people had no chance.  This was one reason he had thrown in his lot with the Americans.  They understand the concept of non-combatants.  Not all forces did.

When Edgars looked over, Zalweski nodded.  As the Corporal moved off, Lolek moved to position himself halfway between the LT and Edgars, behind the best cover available.

Re: Chapter 01 - Włochy (Introduction)

The shots sounds muffled now, like they're underground. You here a sudden rattle of automatic fire followed by several rapid shots and it sounds like there's still resistance somewhere but the rain makes it hard to tell where.

Lying in the mud the cover team look out through their sights into the rain. The downpour splashes off the ground making you lift yourself up a bit or the splashing mud makes it impossible to see. The mouth of the breach is a muddy slide behind you, it occurs to you that if everything goes south there's no way you're getting down that and through the breach into No Man's Land in good order. All around you are the flooded remains of the old Warsaw Pact front line positions.

Logan, O'Leary and Hakala head off along the top of the rampart, covering each other and not making good time. The terrain they're crossing is the old Warsaw Pact positions and they've all been struck many times by every sort of ordnance under the sun. While the weapons pits look reasonably intact the area around them is all torn up and the top of the area they're on is pocked with craters. Bounding means the pace is slowed as well. By the time they've gone fifty metres the rest of the group are invisible.

The scout team get to about twenty metres short of the north west corner of the rampart. Here is a massive sandbagged covered structure built low into the mound. They see movement.

At the structure is a group of men dressed much like the first, wearing the same uniforms and armbands but wearing a mix of webbing and helmets from right across theatre of operations. One even has a Romanian helmet. Two seem to be watching out over the parade, one is kneeling behind a low sandbag wall and is difficult to see while other other leans against the wall trying to get out of the rain. The others, about half a dozen, are poised around a wide entrance into the structure with their weapons at the ready. Suddenly they give a ragged shoot and charge into the opening.

In his periphery, Burris sees the Scout team slink through the cratered ramparts through the dense rain. Meanwhile, his sights are trained on the men on the parade. He jumps slightly as the radio sqwuaks next to his ear.

Still holding the foregrip of the M4 with his left hand, Burris uses this right hand to reach below his carbine and press the switch on the radio, hanging from his webbing "It can't be anything good. Clear 'em out. We'll take care of the ones on the parade."

Quickly pulling his hand back, Burris signals to Lolek and Edgars to fire on the men on the parade on a count of...
Three...
Two...

He pulls his hand back to the rifle, tucks the butt into his shoulder, and lets off a burst at the man picking over the dead body.
