Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

Jon really doesn't remember much more about where the map was found, unfortunately. His train of thought is further derailed as a compact SUV races down the street beside the group, followed by four police cars. They just as quickly race out of sight.

"There go the Fratelli's," Melanie said, indicating the compact SUV fishtailing out of sight, "I don't remember how they lost the police, but they end up in an old house somewhere nearby."

She thought for a moment.

"Any chance we could get down the wishing well? That might be easier to find than the house. If not, let's explore the town for a bit."

"Sounds like we'll need some rope. Is there a hardware store around here?"

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

There were almost certainly hardware stores, though possibly not in this suburban neighborhood. From where they were standing, it was just rows of multi-story suburban houses in every direction.

"The Frateli were chassed by the cops? I completely forgot about that..." With one last look at the chasing cops, Jon heads toward the coast. "If I have to take a guess, I'd say the main street is close to the ocean, where they first founded the city. That's a good place to find a general store. Or something that caters to tourist. They might have climbing gear."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

The coast was easy to locate once the sirens had faded, simply by listening for the surf. A road and riverwalk traveled along the sea to what was probably both the east and the west. After a half-mile of travel the community transition from residential to commercial construction as the road - Marine Drive - split away from the coast through a small downtown area with a safeway, a gas station, various retail shops, a hospital... a full mile's walk brought them to a local hardware story - Hank's - in the middle of the downtown area.

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

As the group walks, Caleb takes in the sights, sounds, and smells of the 80s-era town. He had often daydreamed about visiting the past and experiencing what life was like back then. This isn't exactly the same as time travel, but he enjoys the experience.

Now, the group stands in front of Hank's. "How are we going to pay for whatever we buy, though?" Caleb wonders out loud. He checks his pockets and his person for anything that might be used to buy something. He wonders if his credit card would work here.

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

Jon stops at Caleb's comment. "I honestly have no idea. Unless someone has checks or an old looking credit card, I don't think we'll be able to buy anything..." With a heavy sigh, he looks around, hoping to see one of those tourist map some towns have. "Of course, even if we could go down the wishing well, we'd still be a long way away from the treasure. Without the map, I don't think we could find our way through the caves..."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

Jonathan remembers seeing map pamphlets in the window of the gas station, free for the taking. It's a simple matter to grab one, and while it's no google maps it does present Astoria as a sprawling coastal town stretching a length of three miles along the mouth of the Columbia river.

A number of highlights are featured - the Hillside Country Club, Historical Museum, Goon Docks, Moss Garden... no wishing well is explicitly mentioned or pictured on the map.

After a mile's walk, Melanie was starting to wish she wasn't wearing boots with 4" heels!

"I don't remember how they lost the cops. I remember the Country Club, though - I think they were another lot of villains?"

She grinned ruefully.

"Next time, maybe we'd better skim the movie on something other than Bernie's gear so we know what we're letting ourselves in for. I think we're best off trying to spot one of the kids and seeing where they go."

"Bernie must have had some way with dealing with the money issue," Caleb says, frowning. "Half the fun of visiting other worlds disappears if you can't get a meal when you're hungry or buy the gear you need to go camping or rock-climbing."

Caleb scans the map Jonathan procured and does his best to memorize the overall layout of the town. "Yeah, this is all new to me. What happened at the country club? I'm guessing we should stay away from any villains?"

"If I had to guess, I'd assume Bernie bought himself a pile of silver coins with no clear prints on them. Something like that could get you money for almost any time period." Jon thinks for a moment. "The Country Club... I think they were the ones trying to buy the house of the Goonies. And one of those cliffs is where the pirate ship is hidden... too bad we can't swim to it."

Seeing his friends as stomped as he was on the money front, Jon says "welp, may as well head to the Goon docks. If we don't find the kids there, we can make our way uphill toward the Club. If we don't see any of the kids passing us, maybe we'll spot a house with multiple bikes in front of it. That could help us find the Goonies."

With that, he leads the way to the waterfront.

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

The goon docks, ironically enough, turned out to be fairly close to where they'd first appeared - returning would be another half-hour walk. And if Bernard's tape was accurate, it'd be an hour into the movie - more or less, accounting for parallel scenes and time skips - when they arrived. Halfway done.

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

After ten minutes of walking back along the forested road to the residential neighborhoods, the group beheld a curious site - a red convertible speeding along, with a teen in work-out sweats riding alongside on a girl's bicycle. As they passed, it became clear that the teen on the bike wasn't a willing participant, but held fast by the driver's grip, forced to zoom along beside the vehicle.

As the car approached a curve, the driver let go and sped off, sending the cyclist off the road and into the woods with a scream.

"Is... is that person okay?" David asked, concerned about the biker who just crashed into the woods. "I know this is a kids movie so he's probably not dead, but..."

He looked around, and decided to approach. "We should probably go check on them."

Melanie stared in shock for a moment.

"Definitely!"

She hurried in the direction of the crashed cyclist - again regretting her choice of footwear. Her boots might look good, but were definitely not the choice for scrambling through woodland!

"Are you OK?" she called in the direction of the cyclist.

Jon runs a bit after the car, to little use of course. "Shoot, I couldn't get it's license plate. Not that there should be many cars like that in town..." He says, as he joins Melanie and David.

"What the hell?" Caleb breaks into a run as the cyclist screams. He isn't sure who the person is, why the driver had been holding onto them, or why they had been launched off the road, but the teen could be hurt. "Anyone have first aid training?" he yells.

Rita joins the general scramble for the bike rider. Her Reebok classics a better choice than Mel's boots for walking, especially in undergrowth. As she goes, she wonders who this kid is. Not having any clear memory of the movie is a definite handicap.

"Was that a scene from the movie? Any idea who this kid is?" she asks the others.

Jon moves close to Rita, keeping his voice low so the kid wouldn't hear. "I don't remember much of that part, but I know the comic relief kid got seperated from the rest at some point. Before getting captured by the bad guys. It could be him..."

Heading to the ridge, the group sees a muscular teen in a hoodie and sweats angrily tossing the girl's bike aside. He seems scuffed up, but fundamentally unharmed. He's wearing a red bandanna as a headband.

He doesn't appear to have noticed the concerned adults staring down at him from the road.

Standing at the top of the ridge and looking down, Caleb is relieved to see that the teenager seems mostly unhurt. "What happened, man? Who the hell were those guys?" he calls down. He looks around for a tree branch or something that he can extend to help the teen climb up.
