I think that is definitely a group question.

If anyone needs a name change, please let me know.

Also, having your race and class in your character biography would be appreciated.

I'm also vested in how flanking or movement (kind of important to Beastmasters) work with the simpler line fighting.

I'm not averse to allowing firearms I am hesitant to have Longbows, Crossbows, and Pistols all rolling together.

If magitech and pistols abound then there is little point in more conventional archers.

Unless I'm mistaken then Line Combat makes movement speed, weapon range, flanking, cover, and many control effects mostly moot. I'm going to read up on the variables there.

Do we have people that feel strongly?

I don't see the magitech making older weapons completely worthless, especially if it is limited, maybe being fairly new and expensive for most people.  I think if you took away some of the unique aspects of firearms (ignoring armor at close ranges, misfire) and treated them like much more expensive bows it would not be as unbalancing.

I agree on movement and flanking, being important to me too, or at least movement anyway, as significant parts of the chocobo knight/archetypes work around charging and providing different bonuses to the party when it comes to movement.

The use of certain teamwork feats can make flanking arguably valid (Pack Flanking might be changed to say that as long as someone with that feat attacked the creature in the last 2 turns that flanking bonuses are granted- since it allows people to ignore the opposing sides limitation it is barely outside the line combat scope). We could also say that if a teammate has greater than 30 movement, if they attack the same foe they get/grant flanking which is kind of the point so a rogue with 30 movement would still get flanking bonuses as long as they attacked a foe that a faster ground speed teammate has been able to 'get to the other side of'.

Or most drastic we say it doesn't exist. But that should be said plainly before people finalize classes (not unlike the guns issue, though I don't see why a gunslinger couldn't use a crossbow for everything they do).

Campaign Discussion...Setup

I am thinking of playing a Palico Monk with the Fighter variant multiclass and doing the Meowfist Archetype.

I rolled 14,12,18,11,14,16 for my stats, not bad at all. That would yield

11 18, 18, 16, 14, 14, and 12

So I am thinking of doing:

STR: 12 base - 2 Racial = 10 (this'll kinda suck until 3rd level assuming we don't start there, but I want some extra skill points to be useful out of combat, and charisma to be intimidating)
DEX: 16 base + 4 Racial = 20
Con: 18 base + 0 Racial = 18
INT: 14 base + 0 Racial = 14
WIS: 18 base - 2 Racial = 16
CHA: 14 base - 0 Racial = 14

I was thinking I was going to invest in Intimidate so I can grab Antagonize, and I was thinking of going with sort of a gruff, one eyed, street cat vibe.

Thoughts?

I don't have a way to make and implement battle maps, and I've been running Pathfinder for years (with varying degrees of success) without them.   Something like sneak attack could require a (free) Acrobatics check to implement.  Flanking hasn't come up before, as far as I can remember.

And I agree that bows aren't going away in the face of firearms, mostly because they still haven't.   Bow (and spear) training still happens, though it's no longer a main focus.

If you've got an idea on how to implement it, then please do.  I'm not anywhere near creative enough to cover every situation, and I'm sure that everyone has their own ideas on how to do things.

As far as gearing goes, I'm going to assume that we'll be able to find mundane gear (backpacks, bedrolls, survival gear, etc) without cost.   Concentrating on weapons, armor, and consumables should be where the gil goes; I think.

I like it! Should be a fun and memorable character.

My Fiend Trainer is going to be a bit awkward at first. I'll spend the feats to make my Zuu and I able to flank an opponent while I'm mounted on him so we don't have to worry so much about true flanking, we can just reap the bonuses because we then mechanically can. As long as I am mounted and have a reach weapon to match the Zuu... We threaten all the same stuff and sides don't matter. But that and attacking from high ground have all been classic methods for making a few more bonuses on rolls.

Someone with Craft(Alchemy) would be a good side skill. We may need to invest in magical items or single use alchemical ones to deal group damage in case we are ever not fighting just one big nasty at a time.

I'd like the Guado to have been born from fruit that formed on the roots of the Divine Tree in caves hollowed out by water. Death Frontier, or more precisely under it, should be their defacto territory though they care extremely little about people traveling the surface. They have a town that extends to the surface simply named Resthome to provide respite for travelers and a point of reference for surface dwellers but modify the race to have the Deep Magic trait as a default in stead.

Other races may have been saved by the tree in fruit until it was "safe". Many should see Dart and Co as their progenitors or racial heroes even if they are not the same race, because they might not have been born if not for that campaign.

I decided to go Cleyran (Burmecian) instead of Gria.   I'm still planning on Summoner (Master Caller archtype) and Variant Multiclassing into Monk.  First Avatar will be Shiva.

I'm eventually going to pick up some Magic Item Creation feats, though not the Alchemical ones (as those require knowing the actual spell).

Hmm.. I'm thinking I should probably change my class choice since we have a lot of punchy already, so.. fiend trainer, magitech pilot, summoner, monk. And I should probably go Hume since there's one in every FF game ><

It's ok. I wasn't set ^^

I just have to choose well based on what we already have.

I'm torn.. a couple of choices depend a lot on more campaign details.

Black Mage: ties into the magitech a bit, sort of cyberpunky. Maybe helped build some of the magitech, but I saw that magitech pilots can build and maintain their own. So maybe not ><

Rook: no real reason. I like the idea. But depends on guns.

Ark Knight: probably the least dependent on setting. Just the grizzled old Knight who's been around a bit.

A black mage, despite being an elemental cannon in nature, has some archetypes that are a little less 'slaughter them all'. It would also open up the magic items we can make if you worked with the summoner to make them, I think.

A thief is a character full of utility. Sneak Attack could be implemented any time the character attacks from stealth or if they attack a foe that has already been attacked that round(to remove some tactical display necessity). Huge numbers of skill points are a plus for the non-magic 'still adding out of combat'.

When I said punchy, I meant Melee close focus :)

I've rarely liked or played the "THF" style characters. I'm not sure how to background them to make them fit in a way I like. The rogue description I like better because it doesn't immediately mean "steals stuff"

I'd say that you should play what you want.  I'm sure that whatever the party turns out to be, we can make it work.

In reply to Ysoldeine (msg # 48):

I did actually look at rook, and it's tempting to pick up a level or two.   Might switch from Monk to Gunner, because I expect to be in the support role; and all heals are party rather than individual.  I'm also expecting to be able to make consumables once I get my 3rd level spells.

If we don't have a thief in the party I could focus on more stealth based skills, I could also switch my multi class over to thief to grab trapfinding and such.

It's ok. After looking at black Mage I had a look at engineer. Technomancer is closer to what I wanted from black Mage.

I am still considering Thief options.

And Ark Knight as a reserve.

I have most of my crunch done but need to update all of the fluff to fit the new setting.

We'd be east of Serdio, so probably that one; at least in the short term.

Speculation: The reappearance of the Divine Tree at the end of what would eventually become known as the Second Dragoon Campaign brought not only new species but the resurgence of magic.   It would be Cid the First, also known as Cid the Great (the Eldest Son of the Dragoon Albert, King of Serdio and Princess Emille of Tiberoa) who figured out how to build airships.  Additional technological advances, often combined with a magical element; followed shortly thereafter.

Sounds good. Are we looking immediately after or several (many?) Generations after this point, if we are allowing new races to become established and found their own homelands?

I'm perfectly happy with leaving it at several (unspecified) number; like you said, long enough for the new races to become established.

Proposed Rule Change:
The time required for Crafting and Item Enchantment is reduced one step: i.e. days becomes hours, hours becomes minutes.

Treasure Awards
Each character receives the amount in gil for each encounter as specified in the "Table: Treasure Values per Encounter", using the "Fast" column.   This is in addition to anything stolen or recovered.

Thanks,
