Re: Space #4
In reply to Samantha Robertson (msg # 756):
Sarah reviewed the files sent over, they didn't contain any details over how the 4 conspirators would be dealt with. That was not something she cared about, they had many of the standard marks of infiltrators. Files too good to be true, or partially hidden behind blocks and walls to hide unsavory behavior. The four conspirators would be gone within the hour of them making Burian Orbit, the fifth LC Salisburg however would be arrested and charged with espionage, and high treason. With the information the SEC team and Intelligence team had dug up the man's grave was dug. The only thing left at this point was seeing if they could get him roll over on any other co-conspirators or even get him to expose other cells on the planet. The fight against the dusters had slowed to a smolder as the Burian Commandos had ruthlessly and efficiently rooted them out.
Perhaps one of the more arcane yet effective laws implemented by the Burian's had been to charge entire households and immediate family of conspirators. Those traitorous to Bura and it's people risked their parents, spouses, and even some of their children being roped into the charges and punishments. More than a few Dusters had been given up by family members concerned over the risk to the household though the number was miniscule compared to those turned in due to patriotism. Typically though the families punishments either carried a non-capital punishment instead focusing on community service and labor to those most hurt by the war.
--- Arriving In Bura Space ---
The Vengeance slipped into Burian space in the lead spot of the formation. The rest of the fleet slipping into assigned berths around the planet. Two captured Roussian ships in tow with skeleton crews for refit. In the docks for additional captured ships just finished being renovated and repaired sat gleaming hulls and lights ablaze welcoming the expeditionary fleet home along with the Delta fleet.
That wasn't what Sarah was watching, instead she was watching a training exercise take place. All three of the traitorous Lieutenants were flying a demo for the newest class of pilot recruits, and she had heard on unofficial channels that there would be some fireworks. As she watched the flight tracks and listened to the comms, three of the fighters began to flicker on the tracking board... Green, the friendly color used by the Burian's to yellow the color of unaligned/merc units... then all three suddenly snapped permanently red. Over the comms and loudspeakers at the event a new voice came on interrupting the announcer.
Welcome to the fight against the Empire and its allies. We are all in this together. Our strength is our trust in our people. Without trust and unity we are weak. When that trust is eroded and the Burian people are betrayed we are diminished. All of you know what it's like to live under the thumb of the empire, to fear the dusters and the like on a daily basis. Will your siblings, children, friends wind up taken and sent as slaves or to fill larder ships for the demons and their allies.
This is why when we find betrayal, and those looking to undermine Bura's freedom and strength action must be taken, the cancer must be excised. Look closely, at the board you'll notice three of the aircraft are not marked in red. Each of these three instructors have worked to recruit from your ranks. They've targeted your colleagues and friends because they believe in a world where power is everything, where the beasts are bought off by sacrificing our own blood and people. They are a cancer. They will be excised. Burian instructor wing, we've done you the favor of equipping your mantis's with a full combat load out. Your computers should now be updated to identify the traitors. You are cleared to engage.
Over the coms came a three distinct voices as Lt Maxwell Kingsley, Lt. Amanda Payne, and Lt. John Walker all cried out in protest as their wingmen suddenly deviated away from them and regrouped lining up to take beads. They reacted with the experience of trained veteran pilots all breaking and trying to group up. A flight being safer than an individual.
Kingsley wasn't fast enough, or better put his former wingmen were faster activating their weapons systems. His Mantis was ripped into at point blank range and before he could react further exploded in a fiery ball of shrapnel.
Walker fared better managing to evade as he worked his way toward Payne, however he wasn't able to get his guns on any of his opponents and in moments he was swarmed by his former wingmen and the pair that'd ended Kingsley.
Amanda Payne was by and far the best of the three traitors. She'd managed to evade and work her way back around lining up for a shot of her own intending to at least take one of the Burians with her, however when she hit the firing stud, training marker rounds were the only thing that fired from her cannons, and under powered pulse tags.
Very good LT Payne, however as you may have noticed we were quite thorough in ensuring that you'd be unable to cause any additional harm.
Payne cursed over the comms and flipped her fighter over and dove for the viewing stands. "Tsk tsk tsk... I guess we'll have to do this the boring way." Came the unseen voice as all the fighters dove after the traitor making what appeared to be a suicide run on the stands. It appeared there was nothing to be done, but then just out of range of the stands it erupted in a fireball.
Elsewhere in the academy a certain LC Fred Salisburg was being escorted out of his office in cuffs, and on the blotter a MSG Nevil Johnson was reported as killed in an overnight bar altercation, suspect still at large.
