The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Brindle certainly doesn't look like he is in any hurry to cross the threshold until Tesseryn pronounces it safe.

"Hargrove, where does the corridor beyond Sydni lead to? Is there actually anything there we would be interested in?" he asks.

Leisha walks through.  "I trust him," she says, confidently  She pauses at the pile of coins.  "Is it customary to make a donation?" she asks Hargrove politely, eyeing the hallway ahead.

Hargrove's is quite affronted by Aurion's words.

"I reject that accusation !  I have promised you free passage, and have warned you of Sydni's pernicious nature ... what else would you have me do ?!!  Of course I would consider it a service should you choose to fetch me my diamond, but I would never insist !"

However he considers Brindle's question far more reasonable.

"I'm afraid I cannot tell you ... as you might appreciate, I don't get about much.  Neither of us do.  All I can say is that on occasion others, much like yourselves, have persuaded Sydni to open for them, though they were fools to listen to his lies.  Indeed, I have had to defend myself more than once from such !"

"My point is that there must be something beyond my enemy that those others could reach without passing by myself."

And does not seem to object to Tesseryn taking a firm grip upon his handle as the Paladin stares down the passageway.

Leisha's words, on the other hand, serve to mollify the door.

"Bless you !" Hargove thanks her, and, "Absolutely not.  Some have, despite my protestations, and I didn't like to seem churlish by strident refusals, but it is entirely unnecessary - I have no need for coin.  Indeed, feel free to take some if it is of any use to you."

Brindle whispers to Aurion and Wrukaog, "I think the next corridor around the curved path may lead to the other side of that other door. It would be interesting hear Sydni's side of the story."

Then Brindle asks Hargrove another question.

"Hargrove, if the coins are not valuable to you, why is the diamond so important to you? What would happen if someone did give the diamond to you?"

"It is important that Sydni not be allowed to get it !  He is a bad door ... and so anything that would assist him cannot be countenanced."

"If someone were so kind as to fetch the diamond for me ... well, they'd certainly have my heartfelt thanks and gratitude !"

Tesseryn frowns as his gaze sweeps the passage. A faint evil presence, somewhere in the passage.  I shall soon know where it is ensconced...

Brindle just nods thoughtfully to Tesseryn.

"I am happy to wait," he responds.

He frowns when Aurion gives Leisha a push but he watches with keen interest to see the results of her exploration as well.

Leisha stumbles slightly at the push, glancing back to give Aurion a look more curious than irritated.  With a shrug, she walks down the hallway and crouches down by the diamond, looking at it thoughtfully.

If nothing else happens, she'll pick it up.

Tesseryn continues to stare down the passage.  On another, the gaze he directs towards the evil presence he feels might be described as baleful, but upon so holy a countenance perhaps righteous indignation might be more appropriate.

Aurion keenly, and with bravery that borders upon foolhardiness, assists Leisha down the corridor, though that worthy bears the insult without rancor, exchanging shrugs with the Elf before she continues on her way, gracefully crouching besides the diamond in the middle of the passage and examining it carefully before picking it up.

"Well ... hello !" comes a honey-toned voice from the far end of the passage.  "I trust that old wooden windbag hasn't been boring you ?"

"Very nice to meet you.  My name is Sydni ... I don't believe we've had the pleasure ?"

Tesseryn concludes his metaphysical analysis of the corridor and pronounces his verdict in actionable terms.  "Sydni is evil.  The diamond and gold are not."  He acknowledges the truth of Hargrove's testimony with a one-fingered tap on his shiny knob.  "Hargrove, we seek entrance to the ancient Tower of Set, therein to to destroy the evil workings of Set.  Does our path lie beyond Sydni?"  He advances 40' along the passage glaring at Sydni in righteous indignation.

Nipping past the indignant paladin and gracious lady, Aurion arrives at the far end to examine Sydni more closely, looking for any sign of polished or tarnished doorknobs that may provide still more baffling clues to the disposition of a door.  Focussing on the immediate puzzle he addresses Sydni.  "Hello Sydni.  My name is Aurion Moonbeak.  As you see, my companion has picked up a diamond from the floor.  If she were to give it to Hargrove, what would he do with it?  Alternatively, if we were to give it to you, what would you do for us?"  The snakes appear at his wrists to flicker their forked tongues at the door.

Brindle shrugs at Wrukaog and strolls through Hargrove's doorway. He bends down and scoops the small pile of coins in front of Hargrove into his backpack.

"Thanks Hargrove, these might help pay for some of the expenses of my friends' recovery after Syndi is through with us," he sighs.

Leisha decides to wait where she is for the moment, allowing that it might be bad to seem to choose a side between the two doors yet.  Instead, she leans back against the wall, tilting her head slightly as Tesseryn reaches her.  "You're just having the worst luck with furniture today," she notes.

Tesseryn halts.  His golden eyes stare back at Leisha as he tries to make sense of her comment.

What other problems with furniture?  She had taken his seat at the World Serpent Inn, but that was hardly ill-luck, and all-but forgotten.  The pews in the chapel needed to be moved to reach the trapdoor.  The battered statue of Mitra is in Wrukaog's keeping, for the nonce.  The evil golden bowl is presently being redeemed.  The burned tapestries in the temple of Set ... Ah!  His helmet.

"That was a benefaction."  he explains levelly, eyes flicking up to his bare brow.

"Couldn't tell you, I'm afraid," the door informs Tesseryn.  "I've heard of Set of course ... and Mitra too ... though only by reputation."

"You're very welcome," Hargrove tells Brindle as the Halfling helps himself to the pile of coins, though as the Paladin sallies forth he sounds a little distracted by what is happening further down the corridor.

As Leisha and Tesseryn exchange words (the term conversation might imply that either really knew what the other was talking about), Aurion scampers past to be the first to the far end of the passway.

Sydni ... is not so fine a door as Hargrove.  Indeed, one might say he has fallen on hard times, with peeling varnish, rusted hinges and a handle blackened with use and age, though the coins that are piled on the floor before him are greater in number, just shy of a thousand, perhaps - a mixture of gold and electrum, which you don't see much nowadays.  Nevertheless, he too seems eager to make friends.

"Well hello, Aurion," Sydni responds warmly. "That diamond ?" there is a note of surprise in his tones as if he's only just noticed it lying there.  "Why, absolutely nothing.  Old Hargy is a bit of a miser, you see - he'd just hang on to it, putting it to no good use whatever ... whereas I'd be perfectly willing to sell it to you ... for a good price too."

"It's mine anyway.  I'd have it now if Hargrove hadn't persuaded a thief to try to take it from me ..."

"Evil workings you say ... my, that does sound valiant.  Noble even.  Oh, I wouldn't touch that if I were you ..."

"Sorry.  It keeps doing that.  I really should have warned you."

"Now about that diamond," the door addresses Aurion.  "Are you saying that nice young lady ... Leisha is it ?  You're saying she's a thief ?"

Tesseryn jerks his hand back from the blackened doorknob.  "It's too hot to touch." He glances ruefully back along the corridor.  "Furniture indeed."  He takes out a waterskin and pours some on the doorknob to cool the metal.  "The lady is no such thing, insolent portal.  Now I bid you keep your mouth shut and let the rest of you open."

"I don't suppose there is a hidden door somewhere along this corridor, is there? Somewhere in one of the walls or floor or ceiling?" he asks the good door.
