The Dark Tower - Level The Second

"Malicia is something terrible !" the handsome man snorts in amusement.

"You do know she's a Succubus ?  Demon ... steals men's souls and all that ?  I'm just planning on bettering the deal she has with the mayor, not fighting her !"

Aurion's question regarding the giants just gets the elf a shrug of 'I-don't-know'.

"I suspect they used magic," Ishpemo postulates, eyeing the rickety staircase.  "You two come up last, carefully ... and one at a time !" he tells the two giants.

"Rumour has it there's a dragon on the lowest level," he tells the Elf. "I figure they caught a young one and just fed it regularly once it was down there."

Leisha smiles brightly.  "That's the spirit!" she enthuses.  "My friends did think to leave me a paper that's supposed to help get us past the undead guards, at least, but you'd have thought they might have considered the keys."  She shakes her head.  "Their hearts are in the right place, but they're not always the most considerate.  You know how it goes.  I'll go first," she proposes.  "You all try to keep looking generally downtrodden, in case we run into anyone we can continue our bluff with."

Succubus!!!  Tesseryn does his best to hide his dismay at this revelation.  "We'll follow your lead." he replies calmly to Ishpemo, while mentally preparing to have his thoughts read by a demon.

"Well, she sounds interesting." Aurion too is alarmed but can't see any other way around this except to try to bluff it out and guard his thoughts, not think about the white tower or anyone who isn't here with them. He discreetly removes the golden lion amulet from his pocket. When Ishpemo's band turn to mount the stairs he moves up beside Tesseryn and gestures for him to remove the ring he wears. If Tesseryn complies he will nip back downstairs and place both holy relics in plain sight on a pew in the Set temple below, hoping that Leisha will be the next person to pass that way. He returns to encourage the giants up the stairs. "Left foot, right foot ... no that's left again ..."

When they are ready to climb the stairs Brindle will use one of his wands to make first Cogwitz then himself invisible.

"Remember, it will last 3 minutes, but ends immediately if you attack," he reminds Cogwitz.

Tesseryn rejects Aurion's suggestion of removing the ring, Mitra's Favour, with an almost imperceptible shake of the head and flicker of apologetic grimace.  The ring grants Protection from Evil 10'r, so maybe useful for protecting us from Malicia's mind control.  He'll just have to bluff out why he's wearing it... along with everything else.

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

While Aurion and Tesseryn exchange meaningful glances and Brindle makes both Halflings vanish, Ishpemo leads the way up the staircase, showing no concernas it sways beneath him, before striding boldly into the Inn in a manner that befits one who has two giants in tow and little hope of subterfuge winning the day.

The smirk upon the face of the handsome man who would be mayor, if not king, does waver slightly as he sees Malicia lounging languidly in a dark corner of the common room, but he elects not to ignore her when she raises her glass, waving a finger in the direction of the barkeep as he heads towards her.

What conversation there was before your entrance becomes muted as all eyes turn your way, but picks up considerably as Goom and Golgant enter, so you only hear snatches of the exchange between Ishpemo, Melkor Stoneteeth and the Succubus, though the outcome seems obvious as the bartender retreats behind the counter in ill-humour, Ishpemo's face revealing mixed feelings and Malicia seeming positively delighted as she accompanies him as he makes his way back to you.

"This good lady ..." Ishpemo begins, through clenched teeth.

"Oh I think that's a little harsh !" the Succubus interjects wickedly, smiling playfully at you all and licking her lips.

"... has kindly agreed to assist us in our enterprise," he finishes.

"Shall we ?"

Three out of four prisoners seem willing to follow Leisha's lead, while the fourth is finally convinced by Valshalla to do what she says.  The staircase doesn't prove much of a challenge, and the parchment in Leisha's possession does as advertised and convinces the undead to ignore one and all.

The traverse through the chamber opposite, filled with skeletons and what remains that Tesseryn couldn't easily scoop up, is rather unpleasant, though Leisha does remember to pronounce the password as the group enters the circular room wherein Omphalos dwells.  At least he is pleased to see the young woman.

"Prisssonersss, eh ?" the naga inquires, eyeing the four manacled persons accompanying her.

Keeping his snakes out of sight, Aurion will bustle after the giants to keep them in line "Quiet now, Mister Ishpemo is speaking. No, put that down Goom. Yes Golgant, you can keep that barrel." He will shoo the giants out after the rest of the party leaves. "Goom would you please get the door?"

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Malicia's smile fades just for a moment as she turns to Wrukaog, regarding the big Orc with disdain, though it returns in full measure as her eyes arrive at Aurion ... and becomes positively bewitching as she settles upon Tesseryn who by an accident of birth is the most handsome fellow she's seen ... well, since something rather unpleasant happened to the last one.

If she tries to pry into the thoughts of the Paladin or any other, she gives no sign, instead offering her elbow to Tesseryn prompting him with a 'kind sir ?" as she forces it into his hand that he might escort her on the thrilling venture upon which you are now embarked, hauling him out of the door and past the waiting Ishpemo who looks on with amusement.

The two invisible Halflings show remarkable agility as they avoid the blundering giants, Golgant cradling his barrel while Goom snaps the door off its hinges and brings that with him, tucking it under his arm.

Outside ... well the two men you see (disreputable types, no offence to present company, I'm sure) to the south race off to the nearby Constabulary.  An optimist might hope that they've decided to turn themselves in.  Whereas the wall of the mayoral compound that is handily sited a mere fifty feet to the west of the Inn stands strong and unyielding, twenty feet tall, the gates at the north end of the east wall suitably shut and thankfully silent.

Tesseryn smoothly takes the offered elbow in his gauntletted hand, lifting his eyes to look at Malicia for the first time, his gaze lingering a little on those lips before the pair plunge out into the street.  Events are now far from any notion of a plan he may have originally imagined, and far from being in his control ... he has no option but to follow Ishpemo's lead, react as events unfold ... embrace chaos.

Having embraced the chaos long ago, Aurion finds that things seem to be proceeding nicely from that point of view. He smirks right back at Malicia and notes Ishpemo's reaction to her taking a shine to Tesseryn. He follows the happy couple out into the street ... the giants that is ... any waits to see what fate throws their way next.

Wrukaog glares at the closed gates of the mayoral compound.

"So, we just gonna knock and ask 'em to let us in?" he asks. "Or ask the giants to lift us up to the top of the wall so we get in without asking? Or ask'em to bash the gates open straight away, or what?"

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Malicia appears to take delight in Tesseryn's unease as the pair lead the procession across the way, though like Wrukaog (and this possibly the only thing the Orc and Demon have in common) she seems somewhat impatient.

"Open up !" the Succubus demands, thumping the door with her free hand, before turning back to stare disconcertingly into the ex-Paladin's eyes.  Luckilyl the gates creak open a crack before Tesseryn is forced to attempt conversation with her.

"Wha ... ?" begins the guard who peeks through the gap, only to be cut off.

"Open up !  We're here to see the mayor," Malicia commands, with more than a note of compulsion in her tones.

"O-o-o-of course, ma'am," the guard beams, delighted to be of assistance as he hauls the portal open wide.  Two similarly attired individuals standing behind him look a little puzzled until they spot Malicia, after which they settle on looking alarmed, though it's the sort that keeps their hands well clear of the swords at their hips.

"Right this way," the first guard ushers you in, leading off south towards the Mayoral manor house, the front door of which is about sixty feet south of the gate.

"Ex-prisoners, actually," Leisha explains.  "I'm trying to cut down.  I don't suppose you have anything to open their bonds?  Mostly I was hoping the mists work both ways - I'm sure the gnomes can get them loose.  But of course," she smiles, "It's always nice to see you."

He follows close on Tesseryn and Malicia's heels.

Not really knowing what to expect, Aurion enters the courtyard with the others and looks around, trying to note the positions of any guards.  He even glances up at the roof in case Berkam Shem should appear there invisibly after all. The several enchantments he has already cast on himself give him a sense of being prepared, but he's not fool enough to believe that.

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

The lead guard is thrilled to be helping you, or rather Malicia, of course, though the other two are somewhat less keen.  The presence of Ishpemo, Mrod and Onoch is rarely a cause for rejoicing it seems, even if they are all nominally all on the same side, and while the rest of you get looks that border on the mildly alarmed, at least none seem to recognise you as the foe, which means that either they weren't with the group that accompanied the Constable to the tunnels below, or they're not overly blessed with brains.

The pair elect to trail reluctantly behind you (luckily not treading so close as to bump into your brace of invisible Halflings) as you reach the manor house and your friendly guide ushers you inside.  Within, the mayor's abode is extravagantly well furnished with some fine sofas and armchairs before a magnificent fireplace.  Doors to the north lead to an equally well appointed dining-room.

"Avvakris will be upstairs," you are informed, cheerfully. "I'm Wormgear Bonegnawer, by the way, pleased I am to meet you all.  Would you care to wait here while I fetch the mayor, or shall I take you up to him.  He's probably with Skilvahsara, but I'm sure he won't mind being interrupted."

Malicia pouts at the mention of Skilvahsara, pulling Tesseryn closer, uncomfortably so.

"Alasss no," Omphalos informs Leisha apologetically, inclining his head towards the bound ex-prisoners, prepared to take her word for it.  "The missstsss will indeed take you to the White Tower, but you will need the gnomessss to reverssse them ssshould you wisssh to return."

Noting Malicia's reaction to that name, Aurion wonders what sort of creature Skilvahsara is. Addressing the cheerful guard he asks innocently "Would she be the Mayor's consort?"

“Yeah let’s go up and see the mayor. Save him the bother of walking down stairs. He’ll appreciate that.”
Wrukaog agreed.
