The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Moving to stand between Sydni and Leisha, Aurion nods in satisfaction. "This diamond has no magical properties whatsoever. So relax fellas,  I only steal the enchanted ones. I've a few good ones here in my pouch..." He rummages in his pockets.

"Pity," Brindle mutters. Other than that he remains quietly waiting until Aurion and Leisha finally decide to come back out again.

"Hmmm."  Tesseryn purses his lips at Aurion's attempt to deceive the doors ... although the admission of theft does confirm his suspicions about elvish character. He looks from Brindle to Leisha to see if they still intend to continue negotiating with the doors.  "Perhaps we should return upon the morrow."

"Oh, is that what you were doing?" Leisha asks Aurion.  "You could have asked."

She nods to Tesseryn.  "If we need to.  I like Hargrove and Sydni, mind, they're probably the most interesting people we've met down here - with no offense to Holomir or Omphalos, but, well, frankly, you expect them to talk.  Nothing unusual there.  So if we can avoid going to war with either of them, I'd prefer that.  I'm beginning to think their quarrel is really more important to both of them than the diamond itself, so depriving them of it by `solving' the matter in any way may not be the favor I had initially thought."

She shrugs.  "Sydni," she turns, nodding down the hall towards Sydni, and then turns back and nods the other way, "Hargrove.  It's been a pleasure meeting you both.  I do hope to see you again, and not only if our path brings us back down this hallway.  Oh!  One last question before I go, just.. out of curiosity.  Would either of you accept an object of similar value or interest in exchange for your claim over the diamond?"

Walking slowly as she awaits her answer, she heads back towards Hargrove to rejoin the others wherever elsewhere might take them.

"You were doing something?" Aurion sounds surprised, "You could have said."

He collects the pile of coins from Sydni's end then follows Leisha back, pausing only a moment at the diamond but leaving it be. "Let's go get comfy with Omphie."

"Don't listen to her !" Sydni calls out.  "She's trying to cheat us."

"Certainly not !"  Hargrove sounds affronted at Leisha's well-meant suggestion.  "It's the principle of the thing !"

"You tell th ..." Sydni lapses into a disbelieving silence as Aurion calmly helps himself to the pile of coins that sit before him ... which lasts about long enough for Aurion to pause at his diamond.

A coruscating ray springs from the southern door, striking Aurion in the back.

"THIEF !!" Sydni yells accusingly.

"I strongly suggest," Hargrove speaks in icy tones, "that you return those coins ... and then leave at once and never darken my doorstep again !"

"I'll do that last bit. " Aurion assures Hargrove as he staggers through the doorway, more encumbered by the heavy coins than he had expected to be.

Tesseryn moves to swing Hargrove shut after Aurion makes it through.

He will lead the way back to Omphalos' room, with Wrukaog's help to negotiate the curved passage.

Brindle steps out of Wrukaog's way to allow the big orc to step forward to help Tesseryn if needed, then whips out a wand and taps Tesseryn on the thigh with it.

[Language unknown: "Oun k!"] he says with a smile as he taps the palladin.

OOC: Brindle moves away from Hargrove (5-foot step) between Tesseryn and Cogwitz.

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

As Tesseryn tries to close the door behind him, he finds that Hargrove's icy tones have a more physical manifestation, and is once more forced to snatch his hand back, finding the freezing cold emanating from the door no less uncomfortable than the heat that Sydni put forth.

At least your actions seem to have united the doors, though unfortunately against yourselves.

"Well !" you hear Hargrove exclaim.  "The nerve of those ... people."

"Thieves and worse !" Sydni agrees with him.

"You saw it first - I just didn't want to believe it," Hargrove apologies.

"They preyed upon your good nature," Sydni offers in return.

And then Hargrove slams shut, muting their voices, though you hear the click of him locking tightly behind you.

As Aurion staggers, weakened by Sydni's spell, Brindle thoughtfully uses his wand to bolster Tesseryn as you head back down the corridor.

With the assistance of Wrukaog (and more importantly the silver statue of Mitra that the big orc carries around with him), you easily avoid the giant metal ball ... but as you leave the circular hall, and head towards the sloping tunnel that will lead you back up to the rat-tunnels above, you can't help but spot a shoddily dressed old man walking along the southern corridor towards you, a goat trotting at his side and a troop of 8 orcs marching behind him.

"Erm ... hello ?" the old man greets you, a smile on his thin lips as he holds up a hand and his retinue halt in a clatter of metal.

"Did Avvakris send you ?"

Brindle frowns when he sees the old man and his squad of orcs in front of him.

"Hmm, yes, hello to you too. How come you got eight orcs and we only got one? What's your mission that makes it important enough to warrant eight orcs?" he asks.

Tesseryn halts abruptly, eyebrows raised in astonishment. "No." He replies honestly.  Brindle's question is a distraction, clearly the goat at the man's side is of greater significance than the orcish retinue.  He eyes the man closely to see if he bears any resemblance to others he has encountered earlier that day.  "We were sent by our various gods upon a sacred quest to destroy the workings of Set and restore the balance of power in Mitra's favour.  Did the clerk from that Otherworldly Inn send you all here to enquire as to our progress?"

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Readying a widened Grease spell in case it comes to blows, Aurion waits to hear the outcome. He wonders why this group are apparently leaving the mad giant's room, and whether he should try the follower of Set ploy again. Brindle's question may have yielded some clue, but now ... He ponders how one may construct a muzzle for paladins with truth telling obsessions.

The old man's eyes widen ... but he holds up his hand again, perhaps indicating to his contingent of the orcish persuasion that they can stand down, as a smile grows across his lips.

"Then we are well met indeed," he tells the Paladin, "for that is our goal also."

"Hence my staunch troopers here," he explains to Brindle, frowning slightly as he turns to regard his retinue as if discovering for the first time that they are indeed orcs.

"My name is Berkam-Shem," he informs you.  "I regret I know not of either clerk nor the Inn of which you speak, but yes, we too were sent here by the gods, yes indeed.  An auspicious meeting."

Berkam-Shem continues to smile disarmingly, turning to the orcs behind him as Brindle finishes speaking.

[Language unknown: "Si adiou ascant, nelisi whe rehou conome'thuthiave latbe iv str,"] he insists, absently patting the goat.

The two at the front turn to look at each other, each staring meaningfully at his comrade before one of them eventually shrugs his broad shoulders.

[Language unknown: "Niasmi, p, yin t, us ..."] he looks to the old man for encouragement, [Language unknown: "... u ... sehont ... are,"] his response punctuated by what appears to be a brave attempt at a pleasant grin and much nodding.

"The giant Samalgidaceon ... ?" Berkam-Shem looks questioningly for a moment at Tesseryn before realisation seems to dawn.  "Ah, you mean that statue, 'The Mighty Sam' !  Yes, we've spoken with him.  Very sad tale.  My troops were only too keen to try to help him, but alas our efforts were to no avail."

Tesseryn draws his greatsword as he steps forward 5' towards the old man.  Solemnly he pronounces judgement upon them.  "Berkam-Shem, I see through your lies and I name you and your retinue Followers of Set.  You must lay down your arms, submit yourselves to being bound and held by Sir Holomir, the Guardian of Mitra's Tower, until provision may be made for you to confess your crimes and beg for Lord Mitra's mercy.  Should you refuse then the Justice of Dauros and the Vengeance of Mitra shall fall swiftly and heavily upon you all.  What say you?"

Brindle steps smoothly across to his right to pass behind Tesseryn, to seek cover behind the corner of the wall. Just to make space for Wrukaog or Leisha to step forward alongside the paladin - if they wish to, of course.

"Well, they'll never go for that!" Aurion scoffs. Unwilling to wait for the unfortunate goat-herders to decide their fate, he quickly casts a Widened Grease spell under the orcs - the whole lot of them. Then he too steps smoothly across to his right to get out of sight ... but not so far that he can't watch and snicker as they flop around. It never gets old!

"I deny it !" the old man seems quite affronted, even in the face of a rampaging Paladin.  "None here are servants of Set !"

"Mehh !" the goat adds quite convincingly before it vanishes from sight as it spots Wrukaog heading purposefully towards it with his axe.

The orcs say nothing to begin with, though there's a lot of noise as half of them lose their footing, and there is much in the way of guttural recriminations on the lips of the fallen in their own tongue as they try but fail to regain their feet, much to the amusement of their luckier and still upright fellows.

"How dare you !" Berkam-Shem continues his tirade, glaring at Tesseryn.

"While you're still alive, Berkam Shem, could you tell us where you have come from and where you were going with all theese orcs?"

OOC: just realised orcs are not within reach, so Tesseryn's action needs to change.

Tesseryn sheathes his sword (AoO from Berkam-Shem) then lunges forward to grab the old man and pin him in a grapple.  "Does anyone have a length of rope?  This old rascal is coming with me.  You can decide the fate of the orcs... they are evil fellows and deserve death."

day: Tesseryn Brightsoul rolled 21 using 1d20+4.  Opposed Str check to grapple.
08:57, Today: Tesseryn Brightsoul rolled 24 using 1d20+9.  Touch attack to Grapple old man.
