Brindle leans back against the wall of the entry way, toying with his wand absently and watching the meat shields do their thing.

"I wonder if I would have time to sleep and study my spellbook before you boys run out of undead to fight?" he wonders aloud.

Naturally, that's just wishful thinking.

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Tesseryn methodically fells two more of the undead then, before the mob can push forward again, steps forward 5' into the room.  This creates a space for Haltashaar to join in whilst still keeping all of his comrades within the circle of protection from Mitra's ring.  There, exposed on three sides, he puts up his sword and defensively fends off any who seek to attack him.

17:52, Today: Tesseryn Brightsoul rolled 22 using 1d20+5.  second attack - defensive.
17:51, Today: Tesseryn Brightsoul rolled 19 using 1d20+10.  first attack - defensive.

OOC: Skald, if you continue to recklessly ignore RPoL warnings then Tesseryn will take matters into his own hands, and is now positioned to do so.

"Transmutation certainly, that's what I'd use to turn a dragon into a puppy..." Aurion muses aloud to Brindle and Cogwitz, "But illusion and enchantment? Who are they trying to con?" Now that the cage is on the floor he feels along the bars and lock, even ventures to push a paw through the bars to pat the dog (and flush out any tricky spells).

18:18, Today: Aurion Moonbeak_ rolled 26 using 1d20+15.  spellctaft to identify illusion/enchantment.

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Both Wrukaog and Tesseryn do a fine job of dispatching more of the undead, but the ex-Paladin uses tactics, an act of supreme cleverness that no Orc would ever stoop to, stepping forward into the slavering throng to make room for more of his comrades in arms to join in the fun.

Said comrades-in-arms being rather surprised by the move, are a little slow to respond, but Moram copies Tesseryn's example, climbing up onto the mound of bodies to allow Haltashaar to push in behind him, and while both of their blades find the mark, it is left to Brindle to flick a brace of magic missiles from his wand at the injured skeletons to finish them off.

The ranks of the undead are now sadly much reduced, barely a quarter of the number they started the battle with.  And though only eleven now remain, just enough to field a Nuffleball team, their morale never wavers.  Undaunted by the catastrophic losses they've suffered, they pile on once more ... and are as consistently ineffectual as ever, more often than not biting and clawing each other in their zeal to kill you all.

In a spirit of arcane curiosity, Aurion follows in the path of all good wizards and pokes the cage with a finger, though he is somewhat surprised to find it won't go past the bars, though they're certainly wide enough - it seems some invisible force prevents him from so doing.

Then Aurion's words catch his attention and he glances back to see what the elf is up to. He stays near the battle, though, with his wand in hand.

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

With the Paladin practicing his defense and thereby startling both ex-Prisoners into making wayward swings (and leaving Brindle with no partially dismembered nonliving to practice his marksmanship upon), it is left to Wrukaog to mow down another couple of undead ... and thereby gain the lead in the body count !

The good news is that all the remaining undead are now in reach ... the bad news is that all the remaining undead can now reach you !  Claws and teeth lash out towards you as the pitiful remains of the horde continue their futile efforts ...

Predictably and despite their enthusiasm for the task, they fail to tear and rend in the slightest, though it should be noted that Tesseryn's defensive swordwork means they are even more spectacularly unsuccessful against him than against the rest of those braving the carnage that is the front line of the fight.

Bringing up the rear, Aurion utterly fails to insert the point of his impressive blade through the bars.   Likely magic is involved somewhere ...

OOC: Map of the proceedings updated ... and in the wise words of Mrs. Cosmopilite, "it won't get better if you picket" ;P

Tesseryn stabs his greatsword into the unmoving mound at his feet, the hilt easily within reach of Moram or Haltashar.  "Take it up!" he urges.  "It is the bane of all undead."  He draws his short sword and continues to defend himself.  ...the others may pick it up if they choose.

OOC: Being originally a character in a computer generated world, Tesseryn knows all too well the fate of those in stranded corrupted code.  He has withdrawn his labour and refuses to "sort anything out" until the thread of his existence is assured.  Perhaps because he cannot find a portrait holding a sign, and certainly not wishing to displease Mrs Cosmopilite, he does not picket.

Brindle is becoming increasingly bored with the one-sided battle against the undead. His attention strays to the magical mystery that Aurion is investigating.

"Are you sure the force keeping you out is an abjuration? The only thing I can think of is something like Protection from Evil. That would keep out summoned creatures as well. Perhaps one of the locals might have more luck?" he suggested. "Of course, if it was actually illusion magic instead, my first guess would be invisibility."

He did still spare an occasional glance towards the battle line in case his wand of magic missiles was needed.

Brindle rolled 20 using 1d20+14.  Spellcraft check to identify spell already in effect. (Add +2 synergy bonus for 5+ ranks in knowledge arcana, so result is 22. DC is 20 + spell level so he should be able to identify it if it is only a 1st or 2nd level spell.

Aurion murmurs as he sheathes the sword then tests the weight of the cage where it rests on the ground and eyeballs its width compared to the door. "Perhaps something like a Private Sanctum, or perhaps an alarm should it be moved? Do you think we can carry it out when those clowns have cleared the path?"

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Wrukaog further increases his lead over Tesseryn as the big Orc lays about him with great gusto.  Tesseryn, in a fine display of his Lawful nature, works to rule, slamming his blade into the inert pile of once more lifeless undead and taking up a shorter weapon which he uses but to defend himself.

Neither Moram nor Haltashaar so much as spare him a glance.  Being rather less skilled swordsmen, the pair are too busy fighting for their lives to risk taking up, let alone using an unfamiliar weapon.  The remaining undead might have chanced it, had they a functional thought between them, but lacking what wits they might have had in life, they instead continue their assault with rotten tooth and yellowed claw.

The two ex-prisoners, weary and bloodied, still manage to score desperate strikes against their foes of bone, but it is still left to Brindle to lean in with another rousing volley of mystical globes from his wand to finish them off.

Luckily that takes very little in the way of effort or concentration, for the Halfling's attention upon the battle has dwindled with the numbers of undead !  But five of the either fleshless or rottingly fleshy creatures remain now and by sheer chance all of them pile upon Tesseryn, sharp teeth and wickedly edged nails flashing as ... the ex-Paladin easily, even nonchalantly, fends them off with his toothpick of a blade.

Back in the back room, the resident experts continue to examine the cage, but their accumulated years of learning and experience avail them naught as they fail to discern what spells inhibit the Elf's best efforts.

OOC: Map of the proceedings updated ... universal expansion about to cross the event horizon ... please hang on tight ...

"Come on then, let's go. The bravos have cleared the way enough for us to carry the cage out of here now. I'm sure they can manage the last few skeletons easily now, so there is no further reason to delay," he tells the rest of the party gathered around the cage.

If they can pick it up and carry it without any problems he will lead the way out, past the battle and down the corridor towards the naga's chamber.

Dropping his guard completely, Tesseryn slumps down to sit upon the pile of corpses, elbow resting on knee and chin resting on cupped palm.

OOC:  Oh dear, that's true!  Taking Protected Industrial Action is lawful under the Act.  Whereas Tesseryn would like to think  that his nature has recently swung well away from lawful.  Another moral dilemma!  How does one exhibit chaos?  Maybe start with the definition ...'"Chaos" implies freedom, adaptability, and flexibility. On the downside, chaos can include recklessness, resentment toward legitimate authority, arbitrary actions, and irresponsibility...'  Hmmmm ... a plan begins to take shape ... would he dare? ... will some sense knocked into him before its too late?

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

Is not the very act of defining Chaos, a Lawful pursuit ?  Is not the deliberate and conscious decision to take or not take any action likewise merely a furtherance of logic and order ?  Poor Tesseryn slumps into a mire of moral and ethical turmoil, abandoning entirely the battle against the undead as he wages a more difficult war to retain his very soul !

Happily unencumbered by such weighty matters, Wrukaog gleefully hefts his greataxe and reduces another two of the foe to shattered bone.  Haltashaar, finding no foe before him, hurries around the big Orc and piles of unmoving bones to have at one of those threatening the ex-Paladin ... and while the warrior's heart is in the right place and his blow is accurate enough, the power behind it is not sufficient to do more than crack a scapula and humerus.

Still he contributes more than his fellow, for Moram's wild swing sees his blade fly from his fingers and earns Tesseryn a very judgemental glare, as if he alone was to blame for this occurrence.

But three undead remain now.  Such fell creatures are incapable of pity or contempt, yet perhaps Tesseryn's despair makes the light within him dim ... for whatever reason, two of the creatures turn away, attacking the two ex-Prisoners either side of him, to little effect, while the last ... fetches Tesseryn a powerful blow to the side of his helm that sets his befuddled brain a-ringing !

Yet perhaps a spark of light within the benighted darkness, as Vashalla takes the spot her kinsman but recently vacated, and touches the borrowed wand of healing to provide the ex-Paladin with at least some comfort in his pain and turmoil.

Bored by the carnage without and unaware of weighty moral dilemmas being earnestly grappled with, Brindle spots his opening and picks up the cage which holds the puppy, and proceeds, despite Aurion's help, back out down the passageway towards the Naga's chamber ...

OOC: Map of the proceedings updated ... only three undead remain, and precious few posts till thread oblivion !  Will our intrepid heroes vanquish the foe before the mists of Chaos and non-existence sweep them away ?!!  Tune in next time ...

The Dark Tower - Level The Second

If these fell creatures were capable of thought, Wrukaog's growl would instill fear in their very souls (which is indeed, the only thing that gives a semblance of life to the corpses they inhabit) ... as it is, they pay no attention to the big Orc, even his big axe cleaves one in twain.

And even as it twitches, Haltashaar is inspired to finish off the one he cracked open earlier ... leaving but one.

Tesseryn staggers away, nimbly avoiding the healing that Vashalla proffers, scalp slick with blood that runs down his face in rivulets as he follows after Brindle, driven by some inner need.

Aurion, having finally discovered at least one thing about the cage, blasts the remaining skeleton in the traditional and much favoured arcane fashion, leaving it blackened and burned but still battling on.

But besides the last of the undead stands Moram Infidel Bane.  Bereft of weapon he might be, but the anger of the righteous and unquestioning burns within him.  Balling up his fist he smashes the skeleton's ribs, his hand passing right through, sending the bones clattering to the existing pile upon which he stands, ending, at last, the fight with the utter destruction of all the undead that were gathered here !

OOC: With the battle at last over, this thread can finally rest ... but the quest continues here: link to a message in this game
