The Dark Tower - Level The Second
In reply to Aurion Moonbeak_ (msg # 809):

As the filth approach the flame wall Grartchscartch returns to within 15ft or so, relying on it to protect him.

You lie! you all lie!  Me see thrrrough you.

Incantating with the growls and yips of his kin and holding a small iron triple headed flail aloft is obscured to all in a thick mist that billows out between him and the flame wall.

Footsteps and maniacal cackling can be heard retreating.

P.S. Apologies all, there is some name confusion between the GM and myself. Grartchscarth is spelt with an additional R from the character name or is it one less - I lost track.  My fault for picking a nuisance name I suppose.

Grinding his teeth, Tesseryn squints through the flames and mist.  "We must cut him down, before he raises the alarm!"  Left arm high to shield his face and right arm leading with drawn sword, he plunges through the wall of flame and surges blindly through the mist following the retreating footsteps.

Chuckling inwardly, but listening intently to the retreating footsteps, Aurion targets a Grease spell at the far end of the smaller room. "That may slow him down." Ah, but which 'him'?

The Dark Tower - Level The Second
When one finds oneself in darkest dungeon with foes all around, trust is the first to flee for higher ground. The dog-faced newcomer's words might on one hand (or paw) be viewed as a threat ... or upon the other as bravado in the face of overwhelming numbers.

Those who know Gratchscartch, from however brief acquaintance and by whatever name, merely grin broadly in the face of the Gnoll's harsh words and the cloud that swiftly surrounds him.

"Filth, hah !  Good old Vaastavaar !" smiles Haltashaar, though that mirth is quickly turned upside down to a puzzled frown as Aurion and Tesseryn seem keen to advance upon his friend.  Indeed, as the Elf holds up the Mayor's ring, the flames vanish (not that it seems that would stop the ex-Paladin's incautious charge).

[Language unknown:  "M an taee chngle Eauwilearcomtho Ul ic naiowi ilall temileni notse waur asme rutne !"] Moram Infidel Bane asserts, speaking for the first time since you have known his as he levels his blade at Aurion's throat, while the Elf clutches his stomach.  Haltashaar follows Tesseryn into the mists yelling "Hold, hold !  Please !  He is our friend, I assure you !"

"STOP !" commands Valshalla, her eyes blazing.  "All of you !  Vaastavaar - these strangers saved us from the clutches of those who ambushed the caravan.  And the rest of you must know that Vastavaar is touched by the gods but is as much a victim of these followers of Set as we !  While we owe you a debt of gratitude be certain that we will stand by him !"

"We must trust each other if we hope to overcome the evil of Set."

"And you," she turns to Moram, eyes narrowing, "will do no such thing !"

OOC: Map of the proceedings updated ... and I've now updated Gratchscartch's name to randomly remove one overly numerous 'r'   :>

Tesseryn stops and grunts in pain.  He staggers out of the mist, bent double and leaning on his sword.  He glares from Haltashar to Moram to Vashalla.  Breathing heavily he demands through gritted teeth "Since Vastavaar will not, then do you explain!  He said he seeks to bring a hunting tribe of his kin down upon us!  To make trophies of our hides!  And for what?  These past several hours we have searched and fought to rescue him!  You speak of trust.  We have earned that!  Explain!"

Brindle walks to the center of the temple then stops beside Vashalla. He reaches back over his shoulder to retrieve Vaastavaar's armour from his enchanted haversack. He flicks it out with a flourish to lay it out neatly on the floor in front of him.

"Is this armour really large enough for a gnoll? I'm not sure it is. If this is some kind of trick I think we should keep this armour and sell it as soon as we find a marketplace. That might just about be enough to compensate for what we have already gone though trying to find your so-called friend," he tells the priestess.

Wrukaog, still as big as a giant, strides down the length of the chamber to get a closer look at what is happening. He stops near Aurion then bursts out laughing.

"Ha! Stupid puking elf!" he chortles.

He turns to Moram and grins.

"Do it again!" he urges him.

Then he calls to Vastavaar, "Hey gnoll-boy, come out and look at this! You gotta see this elf puking his guts up. It's carking hilarious!"

In reply to Wrukaog_ (msg # 817):

Upon mention of being rescued from the Caravan Gratchscartch's voice carries through the mist, hostility for the moment held at bay.

"Prove not lie.  show still frrriend"

"Is Grrratchcarrrtch safe?"

Whilst unable to see past the mist the Gnoll's hearing works perfectly, and the sound of vomiting is as music to his ears.  Drool starts to accumulate along his jowls with anticipation of a quick meal.  And also, what of that tempting smell from the other room.

The astute would note not a single utterance of the word 'Filth'

"Yes, you're safe." Aurion grimaces as he straightens and steps back from Moran and the sad remains of breakfast. He gives Wrukaog a droll glare, mock-offended but acknowledging a valid point well made.

He waves a tattooed arm at Tesseryn, a gesture to signify the warrior can stand down. With a sigh he explains what would be obvious to veteran venturers from the World Serpent Inn, but perhaps not so for a first-timer like Tesseryn. "It is one of the rules that the gods impose on us, that we cannot attack our allies or any innocents. Which proves that the gods, at least, believe  Vaatavaar, or Gratchscartch, or whatever his name is, is on our side."

He leans against the nearby black pillar as he takes a swig from his wineskin to wash the taste from his mouth and wait for the mist to clear.

Understanding dawns in Tesseryn's golden eyes.  He glances toward Valhalla with an apologetic bow of his head, then puts away his sword and calls out towards the mist.  "Come out Vastavaar.  You will not be harmed."

The priestess's lips curl in distaste as Aurion is overcome with divine inspiration, but bodily pulls Moram away before he can respond, frowning at Brindle's suggestion and Wrukaog's humor, asking the Halfling as she eyes the shoes of the Infidel Bane, "Might I beg some water ?"

"Yes Gratchscartch, you are safe," she assures the Gnoll, echoing Aurion, his words of and those of Tesseryn bringing her much relief.  "These people are friends, though being not of our faith struggle to distinguish between our gods.  They seem convinced now that you are not an enemy."

"He's threatened us with worse," the warrior continues. "If he meant any of it we'd have been flayed and skinned thrice over and would not have survived to be captured and imprisoned by the servants of the Evil One."

"Good to see you again !" he tells Gratchscartch, smiling in the general direction of the mists.

In reply to Haltashaar (msg # 823):

Following his nose, for not even he can see in the conjured mist, Gratchscartch pokes just enough of his head briefly into the room to quickly scan the occupants.

Just as he returns to the mist it dissipates revealing him with his back to a wall inching sideways toward the room - akin to a Willy Coyote move.  He grins toothily, not such an endearing thing for even the better looking of his kin to do.

"I always trrrust Haltashaarrr frrriend, yes, much smarrrt you speak."  Though to be honest it doesn't look like he believes, or perhaps understands, his own words.

Shaking himself off to a more proud and imposing form now realising no-one will attack him he all but swaggers over to the nearest vomit platch, drops to the ground to lap up the goodness.  "Ooooh so good, warrrm like pack bitch makes".

This entertaining activity is however cut short when between licks he spies the body laying there.  Walking slowly towards it he points at it and asks each in the room in turn in an almost polite manner "You no want, No?"  His eyes widen in the way of a puppy, hopeful of receiving an extra bonus treat would for doing something particularly well.

OOG: Platch is not a mis-spelling.

Tesseryn watches dispassionately as the gnoll settles in and avails himself of the small meal created by Aurion.  However, when asked about the corpse he replies "No!  You will not eat that."  He raises an eyebrow at Vashalla.  "There is a chamber on the level above where a body such as this may lie in peace until a fitting funeral can be arranged.  I will lead you there after we complete our search of this shrine.  We still need to find a belt that belonged to Lord Mitra."

He makes his way into the smaller room, draws his sword again, and tries the small door on the left.

Brindle stares at the antics of the gnoll until the vomit-eating scene almost makes him lose his own breakfasts - both of them!

He glances away quickly but Vashalla's question draws his attention to the mess on Moram's shoe instead. He gags again and barely manages to keep his stomach under control.

"No water I'm afraid, but I do agree it would be best for all of us if that was cleaned up."

He casts a quick cantrip and with a few sweeping motions of his hand, from a distance, he quickly separates food from footwear. Then he turns his attention to cleaning and tidying his own clothing and appearance. With a pleasant scent of lavender in the air, too, to mask that other unpleasantness.

OOC: Prestidigitation.

Wrukaog watches the gnoll in fascination, with a huge grin plastered across his face.

But that grin turns to an expression of distaste when the temple suddenly starts smelling like a flower patch.

With a muttered curse the giant orc stoops through the doorway and follows after Tesseryn.

"Mmm, lavender? Very nice, Brindle." Aurion puts away the wine skin and wipes his mouth on the sleeve of his blue robe.

He shrugs when the gnoll asks about the corpse. He might feel differently were it his corpse on the slab. "If you are very hungry, we left some rats on the level above..."

He watches the gnoll for a while. "Do you prefer Gratchscartch?" Aurion is very astute, and certainly noted an improvement from being called 'filth'. "We are exploring this dungeon, perhaps you can help us. Where have you been since escaping from Ishpemo's men?"

Though perhaps enthused might be too strong a term for Gratchscartch's acceptance that you're not out all out to kill and rob him, it barely does justice to the gusto with which he makes a meal out of something best not mentioned really.

Suffice it to say, Valshalla merely shakes her head to indicate that Brindle's assistance (provided from a sensible distance) seems no longer to be necessary ... though the priestess quickly changes her mind and flashes the Halfling a grateful smile as the foul odours are replaced with a pleasant floral fragrance.  Perhaps Moram is equally pleased ... yet his silence and lack of expression mean that, alas, we will never know.

With the mists now dispersed, and having recovered from his temporary malady sufficient to declare the corpse not on the menu and to plan suitable funerary rites, Tesseryn draws his but recently sheathed blade and opens the southern door.  Wrukaog heads over to join him but he and Haltashaar are forced back by the flames that spring up in the opening between the two rooms, now that Aurion, similarly no longer afflicted, has retreated to the bloodstained altar to continue his discussion with the Gnoll.

The ex-Paladin, though in one sense trapped on the far side of the wall of fire, suffers no immediate hurt from being so distant, for naught stirs within the room revealed to the south of the smaller chamber.  A couple of workbenches with oddly shaped bottles, some filled with brightly coloured liquids, and scattered and ink-stained parchment sheets indicate that the room might well be a wizard's workshop, though it is currently absent any wizards that might verify that supposition.

In reply to Tesseryn Brightsoul (msg # 830):

Gratchscartch's brow furrows deeply, enhanced by his already deeply set beady eyes.  Confusion struggles it's way across the Gnoll's face as he tries to make sense of what the Human said - plus it was only one definite no.

He sidles up to the corpse, apparently still hoping it's on the cards lifting an arm gently to look longingly at the fingers for a moment.  "Why burrrn orrr put underrr grrround when it no scrrream orrr kick?  It dead" as if this were an offensive treatment of any body.  And then a spark of understanding, well mis-understanding, is granted upon him.  Like a badly timed metronome he is all smiles again and tapping a finger to his snout he slowly adds "Ahhh! Me see now."  continuing with a nod "Much smarrrt you lot.  Hide.  Save forrr laterrr. No else get."   He drops the arm letting it unceremoniously fall where it may, to leave the menial work of burying the bounty to someone else as it's obviously not work he's accustomed to.  He also fails to comprehend that finding a place to bury a body in a solid stone complex such as this would be next to impossible.  Obviously his god is more willing to provide for the devout when it comes to this.

Losing interest in the body, well just for the moment, he turns to face the Orc whom he assumes a best fit for gaining support.  Before he can strike up a conversation however the sweet smells fill the room and he is left melodramatically gasping and coughing, simultaneously clutching his throat and nostrils.  He fixes an accusing eye on the perpetrator "Filthy Hobbitses"...splutter..."such"...cough... "awful bad you do" Continuing his juvenile antics he looks at Aurion "Give rrrats quick, me put in nose, make nice again"

His theatric efforts are interrupted as the flame wall re-appears, eyes affixed on the flame but addressing Wrukaog. "Orrrc frrriend, who make firrre such easy ?  Me no hearrr, smell or see magic made" mistakenly believing the flame wall is the product of someone present, and seeming somewhat impressed with the effort.

Wrukaog looks at the gnoll for a moment before replying.

”That corpse smelled like it made a mess in its loincloth when it died. Stick some of that up yer nose. That’ll kill that carking flower stink! I reckon the fire wall must be some kind of trap. Maybe to keep thieves from stealing something valuable back there, or to protect someone important. You’d been back there. What’s there?”

"Perhaps you can show us where you've been hiding?" Aurion suggests to the gnoll. He walks slowly toward the wall of flames, holding aloft the Mayor's ring and calibrating the distance it becomes effective.

Seeing a wizard's workroom Aurion forgets all about Gratchscarch's lair and dives in after Tesseryn. "Touch nothing oaf! Its all mine." He elbows the ex-paladin off the scattered parchments and casts Detect Magic, revels in discovery, keen to learn whose room it was before it became his.
