Harkahnon Ruins 10 - Battle with Esylia

OOC: Because this is a so-called "boss battle," the stats in the monster manual for a medusa were simply too generic for use here.  Instead, I migrated to the stats in the 4th Edition D&D Monstrous Manual, which seem much more apropos to this level of fight and a final boss battle.  But she uses the orbs instead of a bow and carries a longsword like the male medusa listed there.

NOTES:

(1) A critical miss here (except for Borimer) means that you looked up at the medusa accidentally or otherwise.

(2) The medusa's hit points are already reduced related to her being attacked by the statue earlier.

Round 1

Kahan begins casting.

Borimer leads the charge, swinging blindly at the creature.  He hits Esylia directly in the chest (critical hit).  Esylia screams. (30 hp dmg.)

Harak joins the fray, swinging his scimitar once and missing.  (Critical miss.  Harak looks up at the medusa's eyes...and turns to stone!)

Esylia throws her orb at the attacking Borimer, but he dodges and it flies through the open doorway, exploding in the Time Ark room.  The statue is hit almost directly, but Flint also catches part of the explosion.  (11 hp dmg.)

Malissin jumps in and attacks, but he misses Esylia.

The snakes hiss and strike at the attacking Borimer, and one finds his sword arm.  (7 hp dmg.  Saving throw failed -- poisoned.) (Borimer receives a -2 to future attacks and will receive ongoing poison damage until cured.)

Borimer attacks again, hitting Esylia once more.  (33 hp dmg.)

Kahan finishes his spell, casting protection from evil on Borimer.  (Attacks from Esylia are now at -2, +2 to all saving throws by Borimer by attacks from Esylia.)

Esylia is doing something (but you can't see since you are all averting your eyes or blind).

The statue, though badly damages, is crawling forward to the south to attack the group, since it is still in "guard" mode.  It will reach Flint first.

Esylia:
HP: 113/212
AC: -6
Special Attacks:

Petrifying Gaze
Up to 4 attacks per round (gaze, snakes, two weapons)

Special Defenses:
Immunities: gaze/poison

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 10 - Battle with Esylia

OOC: This is how the gaze attack will work:

(1) If you avert your eyes, then you only look up accidentally on a critical miss, and then must make a saving throw.  Your attacks while averting your eyes are the same as attacking blindly and you will not be included in any private messaging describing what she is doing.  She will know those averting their eyes are the weakest targets for a physical attack of some kind.

(2) If you don't avert your eyes, then she gets one gaze attack per round on someone who is not averting their eyes (determined randomly, but weighted in favor of those who are closest or the most danger to her).  A saving throw averts the gaze attack.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 10 - Battle with Esylia

Fighting blind is not something Mal was looking forward to doing but after seeing Harak turn to stone he keeps his eyes cast down as he tries to work his way around the gorgon.

OOC: Are there any shadows Mal can slip into? Trying to get a sneak attack set up. Otherwise he'll work on trying to flank Esylia so that he is opposite Borimer and stab away.

14:21, Today: Malissin rolled 8 using 1d20. attack roll, modifiers later!

I'm guessing that's a miss.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 10 - Battle with Esylia

It is a dark area with a lot of shadows, but there seem to be two problems: 1) she is standing between the two bookcases, though I guess he could slip between and under them to get around behind her, and 2) how's he going to do that with his eyes averted, since it takes skill and awareness of all his surroundings.

So I would say, yes, it's possible, but it will carry a negative modifier of some sort.

Still, if he succeeds, he would not have to attack her blindly from behind for a backstab (until after he hits, which will surely alert her attention to him for the gaze).

Round 2
Malissin begins slipping into the shadows up and behind the shelves to attack from behind.

Borimer takes 9 points of poison damage.  It is like acid in his veins.

Kahan is casting.

Borimer takes three swipes at Esylia but misses all three.

Esylia attacks back.

Borimer feels a blade sweep near his face, and he barely ducks away in time.  The hissing of the snakes also comes close but they fail to make contact.

Malissin successfully backstabs, and Esylia howls in pain as the short sword pierces her back.  (15 hp dmg.)

Kahan finishes his spell.  The poison is slowed in Borimer's veins.

Harak is still turned to stone.

Flint is just beyond the group, turning to face the oncoming crippled iron statue.

He steels his resolves and thrusts again for the small of Esylia's back.

ROUND 4
Flint begins casting.

Kahan begins casting.

Borimer swings, and one of his swings hits Esylia.  (33 hp dmg.)

Harak also swings twice, barely missing on his second swing.

Malissin attempts another attack, but is backhanded by Esylia.  He can't help looking...just can't help it...and he is turned to stone.  (Saving throw missed.)

Esylia lashes out.  Two of her attacks miss, but her scimitar slashes Borimer.  (8 hp dmg.)

She screams out, "Give me the Code and I will let you live, vermin!"  It is not clear to whom she is speaking...perhaps everyone in general.

Borimer's speed suddenly doubles.  (Haste spell successful.)

Kahan successfully (and unbelievably) charms the snakes that constitute Esylia's hair.

Borimer's poison is still slowed.

With eyes averted, no one but Harak can see what Esylia is doing.

Out of the six potentially fascinating sword maneuvers Borimer displays only one finds its mark while the others find empty space.

ROUND 5

The assault continues.  Esylia's snake attack is incapacitated because of Kahan's charm spell.

Borimer looks like his shadowfighting for five swings, and then his last swing hits its mark.  (33 hp dmg)

Harak swings twice, hitting once with his scimitar.  (10 hp dmg.)

Kahan is casting with the rod of absorption...

Flint is casting...

Magic missiles fly from Flint's hands, striking Esylia.  (12 hp dmg.)

Esylia strikes out twice, hitting Harak once with her curved blade.  (13 hp dmg.)

Using the Rod of Absorption, a flaming vertical column of fire seems to come down as if from the heavens and strike Esylia, including the 5 foot space around her.

Esylia tries to dodge (saving throw made), but she still gets hit with a significant amount of fire.  Malissin's statue is also warming up, just within the flames.

Borimer and Harak jump back out of the fray...

Harak makes it back, but Borimer is still singed by the fire.  (Saving throw made, half damage:  10 hp dmg.)  You smell scorched hair (Borimer's) and scorched flesh (Esylia).

Esylia collapses under the fire, her corpse singed and burning.

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 10 - Battle with Esylia

Unfortunately, one side effect of the fire, you notice, is that Esylia's head was scorched and burnt beyond recognition.  It is completely safe to look at her now.

You see that she had been holding a scimitar in one hand and a metallic, claw-like weapon in the other (OOC: like gauntlets with blades -- think Wolverine or Freddie Krueger).

She also had a large pouch strapped around her neck that she would have had easy access to its contents during battle.  It is leather and appears to be scorched and burnt but its contents were apparently unscathed.

EDIT:  OOC: I was going to wait for someone to search her or look at her and then say, "Without thinking, you look down at the medusa, forgetting that her looks turn a man to stone...but find that you are not turned to stone because her head and body have been scorched and burnt beyond recognition."  Something like that, but it doesn't fit with Kahan's post now.

Kahan opens the small jewelry box, which is covered in a black leather.  It snaps open as if on springs.  Its insides have mirrors on the bottom and underside of the lid.

Nested inside in a clasp is a white jewel that is growing brightly.  It is glowing so bright that it appears Esylia was using this as her light source.  (OOC: Think of it as a flashlight.)  The light-jewel acts the same as a bullseye lantern, directing a beam of light in one direction for up to 60 feet in a conical shape.  If taken out of the case, it acts the same as a regular lantern but is more difficult to hold onto without blocking light, as it is perfectly smooth and very small.

A bullseye lantern (60-foot radius of light) has only a single shutter, the other sides being highly polished to reflect the light in a single direction.

Borimer gets his sight back.  Kahan also casts cure poison on him.  The statue was mostly done in by the grenades of Esylia, and you easily put it out of its misery.

You still have the potential issue of dealing with whatever Esylia set loose in the center room, changing the dials of the Time and Venue Arks, placing the gems in where they belong, and maybe even finding Androlus somewhere in the building.

Like I said, I'm super busy right now, but we can move along some of the basics to get this show on the road.  Sorry about my delays.

Check the last updated maps to see where you have/haven't explored yet.

Hopefully this will help get us up and moving again.  Here's what we have on the maps that I see:

The southern part of level 2 has not been explored.  I think you had just examined the bloody area in room 25 before being interrupted but had not actually done anything much in that room.

LEVEL 2

On level 1, there is the area east of #18 that you have not yet explored:

<blue><b>LEVEL ONE

The arrow by #18 references the area where the wall had collapsed in the future time before you traveled back.

Malissin moves into room 25 towards the muffled moaning sound.  It stops as he enters but he had heard it coming from the northeast part of the room.  He begins a search there.

The rest of you hear eerie calls and occasional pounding on the door to the center room where you saw (through the crystalline television system) the demon-like creatures.

Malissin finishes his search.  There is a partition in the wall (secret door) that can be moved back at a crack if enough strength is used against the bricks.

Borimer pushes the door aside, revealing a small closet area barely 5 feet wide to a side. Huddled in the darkness, his leg tethered by a chain to a bolt in the floor, is a blond human with long hair draped over his face.  He is skeletal in his thin frame, clad in blood-stained rags, and is only half-conscious.  Scores of cuts and bruises line his body from torture.

OOC: To refresh your memory, here is the original description of room 25:

There is a heavy oaken table in the center of the room with four chairs around it.  The table is broken on one side, an apparent victim of one of Esylia's homemade grenades.  A pile of rubble is near the southwest corner -- the remains of someone she had turned to stone.

On the table, you see various kitchen knives spread evenly about on a red towel.  Then you realize the towel is not red.  It is a white towel that has blood all over it.  The knives also are covered with blood.  A beaker of a clear liquid is next to the knives.  The blood is also stained with blood, most of it old but some it appearing to be rather fresh.

You explain to her that Esylia is dead.

"She wants the code," he says.  "I wouldn't give it to her.  We burnt the library."  He cackles as if this gives him some comfort.  "We burnt up all the codes.  Or they did.  Or someone did.  It's all a blur.  All a blur."  He seems on the verge of losing consciousness from the wounds and loss of blood.

Androlus is weak and blind.  He has lost a lot of blood.  But Esylia was obviously keeping him alive to get information out of him, most particularly the codes, which you may have already found.  If you have any questions for him, he can try to answer them.  He is very thankful for you saving him and will gladly give you the code to get to Allevia (both of them that he remembers).

He tells you where he scribbled the codes so they would not be lost for good, and you seem to have found them all.  Esylia never suspected that he did that before she captured and tortured him.

He slumps a little in weakness.  "When you got here, she must have lost her patience, and she renewed her efforts to get the codes out of me through torture.  But I held out."  He takes a gasp of breath.  "I held out."

He tells you that if the Time Ark setting is set to all "1"s, it will go to the current position of time's progression.

"Time has a point where it is supposed to be, and where it crawls forward.  You come from that time.  If you set the Time Ark to all 1s, you will return to your time, plus whatever time you have spent here will be added to the time when you arrived.  I know some other time codes, I think, but my mind is blurry from the pain."

He gives you two codes for Allevia, stating he hasn't actually traveled through them, but knows one leads to an island atoll, and one leads to a mountain. The atoll is:  743698224966.  The staff members who went there went to the time designation 624-789-999.  (These are numbers you already have and you remember they take you to the island in the middle of the ocean where you went previously in the ghost adventure using the Nashkaelebod chest.)

The other is in the mountain in what they call the Allevian Crystal Cave.  Its number is:  792348918392.  (You also have this number but have never been there.)

Re: Harkahnon Ruins 10 - Battle with Esylia

Malissin begins walking down the room toward the chest.  (Observation check failed.)  He notices too late that it is not the chest he should have been worried about as he trips a nearly invisible wire at ankle level.  The wire is connected around the inside of the bunks to the farthest bunk.  The bottom of the top bunk suddenly collapses, dropping its contents.

What were those contents?  They are Esylia's stash of orb bombs, and at least twenty of them crash at the end of the room near the chest, exploding the far end of the room so powerfully that the wall and floor collapse.

Malissin is too close to avoid the explosion, but he jumps back in evasion.  (Saving throw successful. Half damage.)  He is badly wounded by the explosion.  (23 hp dmg.)

As Malissin lies on the ground in pain, the rest of you see that the chest, still intact is in the rubble at the far end.

OOC: You now know why, in the future version of the temple, this wall has collapsed.

Here is the previous description in Room 2:

You enter a room with marble floors, but they are littered with debris.  Three pairs of pillars once graced this hall, but the southeasternmost pillar has toppled, bringing with it a portion of the east wall.  A room beyond the rubble, and a second floor room above it, now lay exposed to view.  (This is where the arrow points and the arrow slit lines are indicated in the southeast.)

You now realize it was not the pillar that collapsed, but the explosion that collapsed the pillar.

The explosion has now granted you easy access to room 2 by crawling over the debris to the lower floor and the pillar, if you want.

Since you're in the room with the bunks, I suppose you will be resting here in actual beds.

Please make adjustments as you rest, any healing before the rest, and so forth.  When you are ready, we will advance the clock about 8 hours and proceed, assuming nothing else comes through the Time Ark from your time period...

Let me know when you are ready.

If my estimates are correct, this will be going into the 6th day since you left the battle with the orc king (and last saw the demons who were chasing you).

Borimer silently watches over the others, his warrior's training automatically taking over the moment he crouches down and places his sword over his knees. His body barely moves when he breathes, his gaze steadily scanning the room for any signs of trouble.
