The Test of the Faithful - 7

Experience Points:
PLEASE UPDATE YOUR CHARACTER SHEETS INDIVIDUALLY, NOTING THE LAST DATE YOU UPDATED EXPERIENCE IN YOUR CHARACTER SHEET.

If you receive a wisdom bonus, please also add that as one of the numbers.

Back in the semicircular room (Room 7), the gnomes have not given in to the temptation to open the doors.  They do state that the chattering of the beetles came by the north door once but went away.

Even better, the gnomes have set up a pot, started a fire, and made a stew.  They offer for you to sit down and eat with them.

Gnomes: 6 remaining.

Here is a description of the room again for you again:

This semicircular room has three entry/exit points:  the door you entered, a door on the south side of the west wall leading west (which is slightly ajar), and a door inset into a small niche in the eastern wall (see map).

On the wall behind you (the west wall), there are intricate carvings, which read:

"THE TEST OF THE FAITHFUL. Only those who prove true may transcend and descend.  Only those who prove true are worthy.  The seventh test revealed below."

A tapestry is hung on either side of these engravings.  Though they must be old and are filled with dust, they are in impeccable shape, obviously preserved through magic.

The left tapestry portrays the back of a black-cloaked man standing atop a mountain, his hands held high.  At the bottom of the mountain, hordes of followers bow in obeisance.

The right tapestry portrays a silvery dragon with piercing blue eyes, its tail winding around a black-cloaked figure.  In each of its foreclaws, it also holds a black-cloaked figure, and yet another is crushed between its teeth.  The dragon peers out from a cave in a mountain, and at the top of the mountain, you see the small figure of the cloaked man, hands still raised.

Below the wording and in between the two tapestries, there is another "shelf" that is closed to viewing.  You imagine it will open if the right conditions are met.

On the curved section of wall in front of you, words are elaborately carved into the wall with gold insets.  There are three words on the left, and three words on the right.  Each word is repeated multiple times in several languages.  In order from left to right, the words are:

  1) DARKNESS
  2) CONFUSION
  3) MADNESS
  4) MIGHT
  5) FEAR
  6) EVIL

The words DARKNESS, CONFUSION, FEAR, MADNESS, and MIGHT have a glowing luster to them that the others do not, as if they are magically lit up.

Under each of the multi-lingual translations, you see a square area where there is obviously some sort of shelf or casing built into the stone wall.

You already placed the gem in the Darkness, Confusion, Fear and Madness shelves and retrieved the magic items.  Now, under the glowing word "MIGHT," the "shelf" has rotated down 90 degrees, revealing a small indentation the same size as the gem you recovered, and an item just above that indentation, back in the shadows of the wall cavity.

He still had almost no idea who he was or even where to start looking but figgered the people who saved him would be worth tagging along with for now. Besides this kind of activity was fun, whoever he was a stay at home tradesmen was not it.

The Test of the Faithful - 7

As you settle down, place the last gem and prepare to rest for the night, you are reminded that two of the gnomes are suffering from the Black Curse.  Without healing, they will die tomorrow or the next day.  The blackness has crawled up their fingers and extremities, and their ears are starting to turn black as well.

When the slot for the last gem opens, it reveals a bundle wadded.  At first, it looks like there are a bunch of animal skins, and then you see that it is a patchwork cloak made from different animal skins.  Wrapped inside it is an antlered helm and a sack with 10 seeds.

You take the time to identify these as (meant for Shae):

Cloak of the Beasts:
This plain brown cloak bears patches of many different animal skins. A character who speaks a word of command while wearing it instantly becomes transformed into one of the patched animals for 1d6 hours. The cloak and the person's other clothing become part of the new form.  The nature of the change is identical to a druidic shapechange.

Upon returning to normal, the wearer regains 10% to 60% of any lost hit points (10d6). The cloak cannot be used again until 12 hours pass.

Antlered Helm of the Stag
This metal-reinforced leather helm, adorned with a stag's antlers, allows the wearer to run like a deer, with a base movement rate of 18. Moreover, stags and deer see, hear, and smell wearers of an antlered helm as if they were stags, and react accordingly.

Serpent Seeds
Normally available in a packet of 1d3 seeds, a serpent seed springs up into a 20-foot tree one round after being planted in an inch of dirt, watered, and told to grow in the druids' secret language. A serpent tree has no branches; its limbs are 1d8 brown serpents with green eyes, barklike skin, and wooden fangs dripping with poisonous white sap.

While the tree cannot move, its branches can reach out up to 20 feet and follow the druid's orders. Each serpent-branch's bite is poisonous. A person who fails to save vs. poison becomes incapacitated within one turn; the character does not die, but slowly becomes transformed into a "serpent of the tree," a nonpoisonous version of the branch-snakes.

Despite its barky appearance, this new creature resembles nonpoisonous snakes of the region in appetite and attacks. While serpents of the tree are not attached to the serpent tree, they remain subject to the druid's orders, just like the tree itself.

A victim can be restored with a cure serious wounds or heal spell administered within one day of the bite. On the second day, the transformation to a serpent of the tree is nearly complete; only a wish can return the victim to normal then.

The serpent tree remains permanently where planted and stays loyal to its maker as long as it exists.

Serpent tree: Int Low (5); AL N; AC 6; MV 0; HD 6+6; THAC0 15; #AT 1/limb; Dmg 1d4/limb; SA poison changes victims into serpents of the tree; ML 8; SZ H; XP 875.
Serpent of the tree: Int Animal (1); AL N; AC 5; MV 15; HD 2+1; THAC0 19; #AT 1; Dmg 1; ML 8; SZ S (5 ft.); XP 90.

You gather your gear, lock the gnomes in the semicircular room, and head off to the last of the challenges, hoping your lack of rest will not have been a bad decision.

You get to another of those dragon doors, press the orb, and it rises.  As you step across the threshold, the cube lights up the last light, "EVIL," and you step into another room with a dragon pedestal.  In the maw of the dragon is a red ruby.

This room is circular, about 40 feet in diameter, and is unadorned.  The only exit appears to be the way you came in.

Vuzyl checks around the room.  While not finding any secret doors or traps, he notices that the floor and wall are not connected.

Kahan grabs the ruby gem (not really an orb), and as he does so, the door behind you closes and the floor begins to turn and lower.  Grooves in the lower level of the wall spiral down.  After dropping about 30 feet, a doorway comes into view.  When the floor stops rotating downward, the doorway is directly in front of you (opposite to the door you entered).

The doorway leads to a descending set of natural stairs carved into the floor.  The air from the far passage is damp and moldy, very different from the dry, stale air of the temple above.

OOC: The ointment slows the process, giving them one extra day before the Black Curse takes hold.

Those walking through the mist find themselves in a large, dark cavern with wet and glistening stalagmites and stalactites all around.  There are  small dead trees all around with no leaves or anything, nothing but twigs.  In the darkness, you cannot tell what was making the sounds, but it sounded more like twigs breaking than the sounds of more beetles.  In fact, twigs are littering the ground all around.  The giant round cavern, which is 300 feet in diameter,  tapers to a 20 foot tunnel that curves hard to the right.  The black mist is rolling out of pores in the ceiling and ground to create a wall in front of the entrance.  There are also pockets of black mist around the large cavern that also act like walls that could be hiding just about anything.  Some are long like walls and some are round like black pillars.

Shae walks around the nearest pillar of black mist, her feet crunching over the sticks beneath her feet.  She looks behind and sees...

...nothing.  Except for the many sticks on the ground and a few small leaveless twig trees, there is nothing there.

All is still in the entire cavern.  Whatever you heard moving before does not appear to be here now.

Borimer doesn't find anything behind the pillar of dark mist except for more bramble thicket trees.  The trees are about four or five feet high and stripped of all leaves.

You hear more snapping and crackling noises from the darkness of the cavern ahead.

The Test of the Faithful - 7

As you head forward toward the noise, you get to the bend in the cavern.  Here, you see that the bramble and thicket trees are so thickly grown that you really have only the option of pushing through them (1 point of subdual damage per round and half speed), or destroying them to make a path (no damage).

Although you might think for a second about starting a fire, the bramble is so thick here that you will probably suffocate yourselves and start the equivalent of a forest fire that will wrap around the cavern you just entered as well as this one.

If you hew your way through, you are reduced to movement of 5 feet per round, plus another 5 if you have any skills or tools to do it.  (And must walk in single file unless hewing separately, which to do safely will create an entirely new path.)

Other ways taken on a case by case basis.

You see movement briefly ahead as some of the thorny thickets move.  They grow about five feet tall, are black, leafless, and full of thorns, and something may just be moving in the center of them below your line of sight.

The cave is so dark that you can't really see far into the next large cavern, but it does appear to open up about 50 feet ahead of you.

You also hear a low, soft hum in the distance.  It comes and goes, and is just within your range of hearing.

The Test of the Faithful - 7

I had never heard of that spell either:
Spell description:
The plant door spell opens a magical portal or passageway through trees, undergrowth, thickets, or any similar growth--even growth of a magical nature. The plant door is open to the caster who cast the spell, casters of a higher level, or dryads; others must be shown the location of the door. The door even enables the caster to enter a solid tree trunk and remain hidden there until the spell ends. The spell also enables the passage or hiding of any man-sized or smaller creature; hiding is subject to space considerations. If the tree is cut down or burned, those within must leave before the tree falls or is consumed, or else they are killed also. The duration of the spell is one turn per level of experience of the caster. If the caster opts to stay within an oak, the spell lasts nine times longer than normal; if within an ash tree, it lasts three times longer. The path created by the spell is up to 4 feet wide, 8 feet high, and 12 feet long per level of experience of the caster. This spell does not function on plant-based monsters (shambling mounds, molds, slimes, treants, etc.).

Kahan casts a spell, opening a path 4 feet wide, 8 feet high and 108 feet long through the bramble.  He shows the non-spell casters where the entrance is, since it is hidden from them.

Kahan's spell creates quite a stir.  A lot of movement seems to rumble through the bramble, almost as if a wind has gone through it.

if borimer pushes through and takes damage, would the other party members be able to follow without damage?
YES, IF THEY FOLLOW SINGLE FILE.

can borimer see/guess at how long it would take him to push through? (approximate range of how many rounds of damage it may take)
IT IS ABOUT 100 FEET FORWARD TO THE CURVE IN THE CAVERN. HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW FAR FROM THERE THE BRAMBLE EXTENDS.

does his metal armor not serve to protect him at all from these thorns?
WE'LL CALL IT HALF DAMAGE FOR THOSE WITH METAL ARMOR (1 SUBDUAL DAMAGE EVERY TWO ROUNDS)

The Test of the Faithful - 7

You start down the tunnel through the thicket, your feet crunching on branches below.  The path is invisible to all but Kahan.  To the rest of you it appears but a blur, and as though you are walking through the briar.  Therefore, Kahan takes the lead with Borimer close behind.  They are followed by Leo, Vuzyl, and Tahldar.  Shapfren walks just in front of Shae, who once again takes the rear.

You make it perhaps 50 feet before things start happening.  In the darkness of the cavern, it appears that the small, thorny bushes are moving or swaying to block your path, as if by a wind.

But then you notice that they are approaching you with branch appendages filled with thorns.  Each of the creatures blends in perfectly with the surrounding black thorny bushes, but when one steps in front of you, you can see it more clearly.  It is about 5 feet tall with two branches extending down like legs and two more out like arms.

The briar around you stirs as several more approach.  (Pushing out of the tunnel from Kahan will invoke the rules above.  There appear to be six approaching, two from each side, one from the front and one from the rear.  They approach cautiously.  Their reach is about 6 feet with their elongated arm branches.  Axes, scythes, etc. get +2 to hit/damage; swords or other blades get +1 damage/to hit; blunt weapons get -1 damage/to hit; projectiles get -2 damage/to hit.)

As the tree monsters attack, the humming in the distance seems to grow slightly louder.  You also notice more swaying in the other briar around you, meaning there are definitely more of these things in hiding.

ROUND ONE
Kahan begins casting...

The six tree blight creatures approach cautiously, giving you the first attacks.

Borimer attacks the one in front, slashing it to pieces.

Tahldar casts Daze, but it does not seem to have any effect.

Shae attacks with her spear, hitting the rear tree blight with a slash and pierce, and it falls with a crunch to the ground.

Leo attacks with his dagger, hitting and cutting off a limb of the nearest tree blight but it still proceeds forward.

Vuzyl attacks and breaks to pieces the tree blight closest to Tahldar.

Kahan casts warp wood and the tree blight nearest him curls and twists in agony until it becomes motionless.

Shapfren stands at the ready but does not attack.

Two tree blights remain, one damaged one on the left, and an unharmed one on the right.  Each lashes out with barbed branches as long as a spear...

The damaged one gets only one attack and slashes at Borimer, but its one long barbed hand bounces harmlessly off Borimer's armor.

The other takes two attacks at Leo with both arms from behind him...but both miss.

You easily strike down the last two tree blights before they can attack with their long, barbed hands.

Continuing forward, you reach the end of Kahan's tunnel.  Along the way, you see moving branches and twigs along the see of briar to your left and right, as though further tree blights are weighing their options.

At the end of Kahan's cleared path, the cavern turns sharply to the right and narrows to a 10 foot by 10 foot passage.  You can't see what lies beyond because the entire passage is covered by an overgrowth of vines and thorny bushes, from ceiling to floor.

You will have to cut through about 15 feet of further briar to reach the entrance to the narrow passage (since Kahan's tunnel ended a little short).

Kahan begins casting...
Tahldar begins casting...

Borimer strikes out at the vine around his leg, chopping it off and rising to his feet.

The tree blights begin to close in on you.

Kahan's spell envelopes Borimer in an aura of light (protection from evil).

Tahldar casts his spell, and 4 mirror images of him show up around you.

Shae casts her spell and the briars begin to envelope and enwrap the nearest of the tree blights, causing them to squirm and try to get released.  (3 are trapped.)

Leo and Shapfren stand ready in the middle of the group.

The vines of the blocked doorway snap out...

Borimer swipes at one as it sweeps toward him, chopping it off.  Many of the vines recoil in unison as the two vines are lost.  Only ten more snake out...

But two of them were below the line of the briar.

Leo feels one snag his ankle and begin pulling him forward.

Both Shapfren's feet are enwrapped in one vine, which knocks her back on her head (2 hp dmg) before beginning to drag her toward the mass of snake-like vines.

Four tree blights are coming within range for the next round.

More vines shoot out to double or triple wrap Shapfren and Leo like boa constrictors... (but for now, only one foot of Leo and both feet of Shapfren are trapped.)

(Shae casts hold plant on the moving vines.  She will target a 16 yard square area of the vines if the vines do not count as one plant. Here is the description:

The hold plant spell affects vegetable matter as follows: 1) it causes ambulatory vegetation to cease moving; 2) it prevents vegetable matter from entwining, grasping, closing, or growing; 3) it prevents vegetable matter from making any sound or movement that is not caused by wind. The spell effects apply to all forms of vegetation, including parasitic and fungoid types, and those magically animated or otherwise magically empowered. It affects such monsters as green slime, molds of any sort, shambling mounds, shriekers, treants, etc. The duration of a hold plant spell is one round per level of experience of the caster. It affects 1d4 plants in a 40-foot x 40-foot area, or a square 4 to 16 yards on a side of small ground growth such as grass or mold. If only one plant (or 4 yards square) is chosen as the target for the spell by the caster, the saving throw of the plant (or area of plant growth) is made with a -4 penalty to the die roll; if two plants (or 8 yards square) are the target, saving throws suffer a -2 penalty; if three plants (or 12 yards square) are the target, saving throws suffer a -1 penalty; and if the maximum of four plants (or 16 yards square) are the target, saving throws are unmodified.)

The Test of the Faithful - 7

You move through the hole in the tentacle wall that opens up to Shae's spell.  The briar and thorny bushes also give way to an old rock path that goes forward about fifty feet before opening into a larger cavern.

The large cavern deep in the mountain is at least 300 feet in a roughly circular or oval shape.  Plenty of briar and thorns rim the walls to your right and left, possibly concealing more of the bushy creatures that just attacked you.  The overhead ceiling is lined with rock stalactites, and the ceiling itself is at least a hundred feet high.

But what catches your attention is the large tree at the far side of you.  It is huge, with a stump at least 8 feet in diameter and rising 50 feet to the sky.  Its bark is jet black, with a twisting, gnarled wood that spirals up.  The branches reach at least 20 feet from its trunk, with darkened fruit, pointy thorns, and a few scattered leaves of an umber red color.

Near the base of the tree, a humanoid figure is within the curls of the branches itself.  He appears to be Drow, with an ancient robe now nearly completely in tatters.  His eyes are closed as if in sleep.  Whether he is alive or dead, you cannot tell.  His chest does not move.  Whether he is captive or creature, you also cannot tell.

Around his neck is a gold chain, and at the end of the chain is a gem--a silvery gem.  You can guess what that gem is used for because just 40 feet to the right of the tree is another of those dragon altars.  This one is empty, just waiting for a gem to be placed.

Between and somewhat behind the ominous tree and the dragon altar is the statue of a man.  The sculpting seems to have caught him in the act of shielding his eyes while lifting a gem.  The gem itself is not made of stone, but is instead a milky white.

To the diagonal right going behind you (if you are traveling south, it would be northwest), a large chamber 40 feet wide leads away.  Unfortunately, as with the chamber you just entered through, it is blocked by the thorny briar, and doubtless, it is filled with more tree blights.

Tahldar gets within distance of the tree and casts a spell.  As soon as the gem comes free, the Drow opens his eyes suddenly, scanning the dark while his body is still held tightly against the tree as though melded with it.

The tree also comes alive, its branches twisting an moving as though through to and fro by an unseen tornado.  As it starts to calm, the Drow lifts his arm and points toward you.  He opens his mouth and his words are hoarse and scratchy as he says, "Tree blights, attack."

His lifted hand lights up in a silver glow and he sends bolts of ice directly at Tahldar.  They hit him hard, interrupting his spell.  (Tahldar hit by ice shard missiles (modified magic missile), 16 hp dmg.)

The gem falls to the ground 10 feet from the tree and into the hard dirt.

The Test of the Faithful - 7

Since it's been awhile, here is a recap:

You traversed strange spiked weeds and living weed creatures called "tree blights" to come to this open area 300 feet in diameter.  The last 20 feet of the perimeter is covered in the spiked weeds and stalactites line the ceiling 100 feet above you.

In the center area of the circle is an incredibly large tree (8 foot diameter stump and 50 feet high).  It is totally black with twisting wood spiraling up and branches at least 20 feet long.  It has dark fruit, pointy thorns, and a few leaves here and there that are a dark red.

Encased in the intertwined trunk of the tree is a Drow, with a  gold chain and a silvery gem attached to it.  Tahldar took the gem and woke up the Drow, which ordered the tree blights behind you to attack.  He sent magic bolts of ice at Tahldar which hit him and sent the gem flying about 10 feet away.

About 40 feet to your right (about center between the large tree and the perimeter of dangerous thorny weeds, is another of those dragon altars.  This one is empty, just waiting for a gem to be placed.

Between the altar and the tree is the statue of a man who looks like he was shielding his eyes while lifting a gem.  The gem is a milky white.

Between and somewhat behind the ominous tree and the dragon altar is the statue of a man.  The sculpting seems to have caught him in the act of shielding his eyes while lifting a gem.  The gem itself is not made of stone, but is instead a milky white.

There is apparently another cavern to your far right, but it is blocked by the thorny briar like the one you just created a hole in to get to this cavern.  You cannot see what lays beyond it.

Borimer goes straight at the tree to hurt it with his sword.

Shae begins casting...and a wall of ice explodes up behind you, blocking out the approaching tree blights for the moment.

Tahldar casts a spell, and his body glows a moment as magical armor covers him.

Kahan also casts, and a fire sprouts up around the Drow in the tree.  He screams in pain...

A tree branch 20 feet long strikes out at Tahldar.  Leo tries to protect Tahldar and deflects the branch just as it gets close.

The Drow begins casting, and water falls as if from the sky, putting out the flame on him and creating a deluge of rain.  As he looks toward you, you can see his eyes glowing red.  His teeth part, and you see they are vampiric--spiked at the canines.

The tree also strikes at Borimer, just as Borimer swings his sword.  Borimer is hit and sent flying into the ice wall made by Shae, but not before getting two strong strokes that actually sever that branch.  (Borimer takes 18 damage.)  With Borimer's blow, the entire tree shakes and trembles in pain, and its leaves begin shedding and falling to the earth.

The tree blights begin trying to move around the ice wall created by Shae.

Through this, Vuzyl dives for the floor, barely missing being struck by yet a third swinging branch.  He grabs the silvery gem from the ground.  He now stands near the statue of the man covering his eyes.

ROUND 2
Your attack continues...

The tree strikes out as the drow mumbles a spell as if in a daze.

Kahan casts a spell, which provides the group with some protection.  (Protection from evil, 10 foot radius  The monster's attacks are -2 to each attack roll, and your saving throws are at +2.)

Shae strikes out as a 20 foot long barbed tree limb flies her way like a living vine or snake.  She hits (11 dmg) but where her spear pierces, a greenish fluid sprays, spreading like spouting blood.  The branch misses Shae because of her strike, but the greenish fluid covers her left arm, and burns.  (7 hp acid damage).

Borimer successfully dodges a flying tree limb, jumping over its barbed spikes as he makes his way to the drow.  (FYI, the ice wall is behind the group, so it does not block any of your attacks, just the approaching tree blight creatures.)

Borimer strikes out at the drow, but he is too late.  The drow his finished mumbling a spell and his entire body disappears.  Borimer sinks Godslayer into the heart of the tree instead.  Greenish goo bubbles out like blood.

The drow appears about 20 feet up, his two feet spread apart on two limbs of the giant tree.  His previously glazed over eyes are becoming clear.  Tahldar redirects his lightning bolt, which hits the drow (saving throw succeeded, 15 dmg), and elicits a growl of pain and anger.

Leo has successfully distracted the trees and stabs a 20 foot limb flying in his direction.  (8 hp dmg).

The tree lobs a crimson fruit, and it explodes near Kahan's feet.  Seeds fly like shrapnel, embedding in Kahan.  (Saving throw made, half damage. 6 hp dmg.)  The fruit and seeds burn like liquid fire (napalm).  Even worse, the exploding fruit seeds hit some of the crimson leaves on the ground, which then blaze up into unnaturally hot fires.

Vuzyl ducks under a flying tree limb and grabs at the milky gem.  The statue of the man's hand seems fused to the gem, and it does not come loose.

* * *
So going into round 3, Borimer is at the trunk of the tree with his sword sunk into it, the Drow has teleported up 20 feet above you, Vuzyl has made it to the statue of the man but is so far unable to pull the gem free from its grasp, Tahldar and Leo have sunk to the back of the group, while the others stand in the middle fighting off the tree limbs.

There is also a wall of ice behind you protecting you from the circling tree blights among the thorny briar you just came from.

You discovered the green viscous "blood" of the tree is acidic to the touch, and its fruit explode like grenades.  The seeds are like napalm, and the leaves turn into burning oily fires when exposed to the seeds.

Tahldar is pleased that his spell worked, but is not liking that the Drow has the high ground and remains out of Borimer's range.  Too, the tree is proving to be formidable.

Trying a different tactic, he begins to weave another spell.

OOC: Cast the reverse of enlarge, reduce, on the tree.  Save vs spell at -3.  Range is 45 yards.  If it fails to save it will be reduced by 90% and will lose some of it's potential physical damage it's limbs can cause.  Strength, HP's and magical effects are unaffected.  So it wouldn't be a full 90% drop in damage, but maybe a little bit reduced.  In any event this would bring the drow into Borimer's range...

This is going to be funny...

ROUND 3
With the ice wall melting behind you, soon to let in the horde of tree blights, the drow begins casting.

Tahldar, Shae, and Kahan also begin casting...

Borimer takes some hard hits against the tree, and its sap begins flowing.

Its branches swing wildly.  One flies toward Tahldar, but Leo hits it, knocking it away.  Its bulbous fruit goes flying and slams against the dark briar, exploding into flame.  The left (west) side of the room is now starting to be ablaze with a fire spreading throughout the cavern.

Tahldar casts his spell (reduce) and the tree becomes much smaller, its trunk thin enough that you could wrap your arms around it.  The long branches also shrink smaller.

Another branch flings one of those napalm fruits, and Vuzyl ducks just in time.  It splatters against the statue, and miraculously, the statue begins slowly changing into a man.

Shae finishes her spell, and the drow is entangled by the tree branches, interrupting his spell.

Kahan finishes his spell, plant growth.  The miniaturized tree begins to grow again...and its trunk curls outward, revealing what appears to be a human heart within.

The drow is again in Borimer's range, as well as the heart.  The drow begins casting again.  The tree blights are being engulfed in flames around you.  The tree is badly hurt but still has many napalm fruit it can throw.  The statue is still turning from stone to flesh, and this causes the gem to fall to the ground out of his hand...and at Vuzyl's feet.

ROUND 4

Shae and Borimer attack the now exposed beating heart of the giant black tree...

Tahldar casts a spell...

Leo continues to protect Tahldar from the tree branches...

Kahan braces to defend against the tree blights...

Vuzyl grabs for the gem that has now fallen...

The fire is expanding behind you.  It engulfs the tree blights and sends those that are surviving back into the cavern from where you came originally.  It is also burning all the briar to your right, revealing the exit through the flames as they eat through the briar.  Smoke is filling the high ceiling.

Shae and Borimer stab the heart at the same time.  The human-like heart turns purplish, and black goo gushes from the wounds instead of blood.  Then, in an instant, the heart stops, and all movements of the tree stop with it.

Tahldar's spell hits the drow dead on, interrupting his spell.  He squeals in inhuman pain and then falls from his perch, hitting the tree branches on the way down and breaking his neck as he hits the ground--dead.

Also at this moment, the statue of the man finishes turning back to flesh.  He falls to the ground with a groan and then weakly looks in his hand and then on the ground.

He is mumbling something, as if still dazed by turning back to flesh.  "Evil begets evil.  Evil begets evil."

He is feeling around the dirt.  "Where is it?  Where did it go?"

Borimer and Shae withdraw their sword and spear, and everyone turns their attention for a moment to this man.

He is clad in simple priest's robes that are close to the skin for easy movement and no excess or loose fabric.  A holy symbol hangs on a silver chain around his neck; it is circular like a spiral and a pointy end, and some symbol in the center.  He appears to be in his mid-forties, with a circular band of hair cut in a traditional monk style with a bald circular top.

He looks up quickly, as if noticing you for the first time, and then looks past you at the tree.  "No," he says, suddenly in panic. "What have you done?  The tree and its guardian were the only thing blocking the portal to the 88th layer of the Abyss.  The gaping maw.  The GAPING MAW."

As he says this, you hear as if a distant echo, the blaring of a horn like a call to arms.  Then you hear a cracking sound that rises above the sound of the fiery blaze behind you.  Instinctively, you all rush toward the fallen monk, picking him up to his feet and moving away from the dead tree--

--for the sound you heard was the sound of breaking roots.  The tree is being uprooted.  As if it is nothing more than a branch in the way, the tree flies back into the fire.  You all jump to the ground as its flammable fruit explode in a giant explosion that goes deep into the cavern where you started.  The shock wave paralyzes you momentarily.

And then the portal opens...

The portal is 25 feet high by 15 feet wide, oval in shape.  The top of it is covered in the smoke from the fiery blaze around you.

You  hear the blaring of the warhorn again.  This time, you sense that it comes from beyond the portal, and it is so loud this time that it fills your head with sound.

After it passes, the monk rises to his feet.  "You did it," he says softly in terror. "You released the demogorgon."

Sea water suddenly gushes through the portal as you all rise to your feet to regain your senses.  The water is like a wave.  The fires go out, and the dirt turns to mud.  The smell of the water is less like brine than like sulphur.

And then the thing of nightmares steps through the portal.

The demon towers 18 feet high.  Its body is at once sinuous like that of a snake and powerful like that of a great ape. Two baleful baboon heads leer from atop its lumbering shoulders, from which writhe two long tentacles.  Its lower torso is saurian, like some great reptile with blue-green, scaly skin. An immense forked tail follows behind it.

The Test of the Faithful - 7

Borimer's stomach drops when he hears the first horn, and then turns to acid when the Demon Prince steps through the portal. The Godslayer seems to vibrate when Borimer charges...

As you begin your attacks, the monk says, "You must send it back to the Abyss.  Where is the gem?  Where is the gem?" He still looks around frantically for the gem (which is likely the one Vuzyl is holding).

Kahan is understandably taken back by the sight of the demogorgon, but doesn't let that effect him as he pushes down his instincts to once again face an imminent life or death situation. He turns to the monk and states, "I hope you know more about this creature than just it's name, or can be of more use than that in a fight." With that, Kahan begins casting.

As he sees the gem, the monk's eyes widen.  "We must exchange it for the dragon's maw gem.  It is folly to try to destroy the demogorgon.  That gem must go into portal to draw the demogorgon."  He points at the familiar altar of the dragon, which lies about halfway between you and the demogorgon.  The sounds of the crashing of water, of the rushing of rancid air from the portal, and the stomping of the demogorgon force the monk to raise his voice to make sure you can hear him.

As before, the altar is an ornate altar with a dragon twisting around it.  The mouth of the dragon faces up, is open, and holds in its jaws a gem about the size of a person's open hand.

The demogorgon looks down from its 18 foot height at you.

Tahldar casts stoneskin on Borimer.  Immediately thereafter, Borimer is running to the demogorgon to attack.

Kahan is casting.  (Prayer spell cast.)

Shae is casting.  (Bless spell cast.)

Leo runs forward between Vuzyl and the dragon.  He is about 10 feet behind the altar.

The demogorgon stands squarely, looking down as if sizing up your group.  Its tentacles whip around backwards, ready to strike.

Shae stands mesmerized.  She moves to the side to create a target away from the others, waving her spear to distract the demogorgon.  She yells to Vuzyl, "Put the gem in the altar and get the other one.  Quickly, please!"

The Test of the Faithful - 7

Borimer rushes off to nearly certain death against one of the Prince Demons of the Underworld that towers above him...

Vuzyl runs to replace the gem at the altar and take the other gem.  The monk is hot on his heels.

Shae runs out away from the party to distract the demogorgon from what Vuzyl and the monk are doing.

Tahldar casts mirror image, suddenly surrounded by four more Tahldars.

Kahan prepares to defend or attack as he follows to protect Vuzyl.

DEMOGORGON
hp: 476/476
AC: -10
Speed: 6
Special Attacks: (Too numerous to list)
Special Defenses: (Too numerous to list)

The demogorgon, having spotted the approaching Borimer, Shae and the rest of the group, turns his attention toward you.  You hear in you heads the sibilant word "Hethradiah".

A spiked tail sweeps down at Borimer, hitting him.  (15 dmg.)  Borimer immediately feels weakened by the blow as his tissues begin a process of necrosis.

The left head also looks down at Borimer with a disruptive gaze.  Borimer feels his body slowed.  (All moves and attacks at half speed.)

Then in your minds you hear the utterance of "Aameul".  The right head gazes at Shae...

Shae is dominated.  She is now in the total control of the demogorgon.  She turns to fight her friends...

The right head then turns quickly to face the monk and Vuzyl.  Its tentacles whip out, and Kahan, Vuzyl, the monk, and everyone near them feels a wave of air fly by them, but the attack has no effect.

Vuzyl changes out the gems, pocketing one.  The monk says, "Give it to me," asking for the newly acquired gem. "Before it is too late."

Borimer is slowed, and the pain in his right shoulder where the tentacle hit is rotting, but he reaches and strikes out, hitting the demogorgon once with his sword.

Vuzyl sidesteps Kahan while the monk waits for an answer.  Vuzyl hands the gem to the monk.  "Do it," he says, "Do it while you still can."

Vuzyl then makes a wide circle to the right to make sure the group is not all together in one giant group target.  He will try to distract the demogorgon by throwing daggers at it and taunting it.  "You think you're all tough, do you?  Try this on for size."

The monk takes the gem from Vuzyl and begins running toward the demogorgon.

Borimer takes another 5 damage from continuing necrosis. (5 dmg until save made)

Borimer, though slowed, makes a hit (critical hit) that actually slices through the tendons and bone of the foot of the demogorgon.  One head howls in pain, and the monk uses the falling demogorgon to his advantage...

Meanwhile, Shae attacks and hits one of Tahldar's mirror images.

The demogorgon focuses on Borimer.  Its tentacles strike down at the slowed warrior.  He is hit.  (13 damage, and feels another necrotic rotting in his leg. 10 dmg until save made).

The demogorgon's other head focuses on Leo, and Leo feels a psychic pull as he is suddenly teleported to 10 feet away from the demogorgon.

The monk makes an amazing acrobatic jump atop the demogorgon's wrist, swings around its arms while pummeling it in the chest with inhuman strength, causing another wail to escape, this time from the other head.  And then, grasping fur and bracing, the monk jumps into the portal with the gem in hand.

You hear a loud "whoosh" and feel air being sucked in around you.  The portal converges on itself, dragging the demogorgon back into the abyss, and snapping shut with a pop, leaving you in the darkness in ankle deep seawater from another plane of existence...and the severed foot of a demogorgon where the tree and drow had been.  Both of those have now been sucked into the nether regions.

Shae is released from the domination and Borimer is back to normal speed.  All effects from the demogorgon are lifted.  The necrosis is still present on Borimer, but its advance has stopped.

The gem on the dragon maw altar has now turned a milky white, just like the gem that was taken into the portal.

Borimer pushes back on the horror of decaying flesh until Kahan cures the affliction through the power of his god. Borimer stands back up, thanks his friend, and then moves to the severed piece of Demon Prince flesh (and presumably, hoof). He smiles with grim satisfaction and wipes off the worst of the ichor from the Godslayer. He sheathes his blade and picks up the unholy foot of Demogorgon. He places it in bag.
