TYPICAL ARENA
The arena platform is a 100ft.-long, 100ft.-wide 50ft.-deep cube of dirt and rock. Surrounding this area is a giant force cube which goes 50 feet over the highest floor point and 50 feet under the lowest floor point as well. The force cube is enchanted with epic anti-magical barriers that not only make them immune to magic but also bar teleportation and dimensional gateways from moving through them. Summoning creatures into the arena and teleportation within the arena function normally (you just can't escape). The ceiling allows weather, water, sound and energy through, but not objects or creatures. The force walls can be climbed only by creatures with spiderclimb but the corners can be braced against (Climb DC20). Small throwable rocks litter the arena in just about every square and boulders line the out edge. Opponents begin on opposite corners of the arena as far as possible.

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

The Ankou rolled 7 using 1d20 ( initiative)

Go ahead and roll your own initiative, then post it here.
If you roll higher than 7, you may start with your prep round.

Check an other fight thread for the format.

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

sorry for the delay!

The Ankou appears in one corner of the arena, wrapped in dark robes and holding a long polearm.
Strips of black clothes catch the subtle breeze in the arena and meander around this grim silhouette.

No words come from under his hood, but he seems lost in a eerie incantation, and suddenly tosses before him a strand of webbing... it bursts into a 40ft wide spider web, hiding the wizard in his corner.

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

Kazan is a bit confused by the first move of his opponent, why would he trap himself in a web? He had no itention of going in that trap however, so he approached cautiously.

Remembering his horseshoe game back in the days, he tossed an alchemist fire in a perfect lob wich fell right where he wanted in the web. The fire started to spread from that point on.

The Ankou should be worried by the fire, but keeps a calm focus. He starts mumbling an incantation, with not apparent effect. Not yet, at least.

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

Kazan told himself: "This is it!" He had to act now, who knows what power the mage would hold with his next spell. He mustered his courage and jump over the web, then dashed through the flames to attack Ankou. Until a flaming cobweb dropped in his eyes.and he swung wide of Ankou. "Argh damn it, that was stupid!"

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

lucky me!
The Ankou was worried when he saw the swashbuckler dashing forward and jumping the flames to reach him... but he kept focusing and finished the incantation.
Four small stocky humanoids made of stone appeared around the swordsman, and proceeded to slap him copiously!

The Ankou clapped his hands together, he vanished and reappeared instantly on the other side of the alchemical flames. He took a step back and proceeded to cast a spell.

Kazan felt a hex taking hold on his mind...

In reply to Ankou (msg # 9):

Kazan Ibn Saiman rolled 16 using 1d20+4 with rolls of 12. Will save against hold person DC 18 (using charmed life for +2)

However, i think your elementals have to attack as soon as they appear, so at the beginning of your turn, before hold person.

I had set it to Parry the two first attacks and riposte one if it worked. Also, i don't see the rolls for the damage on the dice roller? Doesn't really matter, but i'm just wondering where they are. I'll continue with my round in the next post.

Kazan Ibn Saiman rolled 26 using 1d20+13 with rolls of 13. Attack following riposte on first attack from earth elemental.

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

Yeah, that fumble is costing me the match i think...
The flames kept spreading as Kazan parries one Earth elemental and strikes back with a mortsal blow for the elemental. However, another one places a vicious strike in the back of his head. The blow was so hard that Kazan froze for a second, however, he then realized it was not the blow that made him freeze, but the spell from the mage. He tried to resist, but was paralyzed, powerless to do anything.

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

are you sure fire spread like that in a web? it's irrelevant here, but I'm wondering for future uses of the spell...

The Ankou saw the swashbuckler froze and displayed no emotion.

He lowered his arm and the three earth elementals stroke simultaneously, targeting fragile spots on his skeleton.

Kazan was condemned to helplessly listen to his own bones breaking.

About the fire and web thing.. i'm not sure...
I've looked up forums about it, but the wording is not clear. I assumed it did spread, it seems logical to me, although i don't know for sure.
Other people rule that fire must make contact with each square to burn it.
According to me, a mass of webs of that magnitude burning would certainly generate enough heat to light up the rest of it.
In the end it should be DM's call however, maybe i should have asked before making the fire spread?

Re: Duel #138: Ankou vs. Kazan

Good game! The fumble on your first roll was definitely a buzzkill...

About the web, I recall that in a previous edition (ADD 1st or 2ed I reckon) the rules stated that spider web is consumed by fire but produces no flames and fire does not spread. Which is why I still play it that way, but I'm not sure that this is how paizo sees it.

The Ankou is level 5 and used no consumables.

(You should likewise state your level and use of consumables to close the fight)
