Re: Battle Royale #5: Afrezza vs. Josep vs. Kazan vs, Lainadan

Afrezza casts a spell, and his scimitar glows with cold light. He then floats up to the top of the column and heads over to meet Josep atop a larger platform. He hops easily over the small gap.

His sword flicks out, but he fails to connect. One of the images winks out. Seven Afrezza's face off against now five Joseps. All of the Afrezza images shrug helplessly, a little embarrassed at the indecency of the situation, and he grins at the wizard. "Best we get this settled."

Apologies. I used Lainadan's map that showed you at C6+4....

Unfortunately, that positioning is a big reason why I decided to move on Josep now :(
Well crap.

So just Have Afrezza levitating at C2+4. No quickrunners shirt needed. The -1 from levitating doesn't change the outcome of the turn.

Re: Battle Royale #5: Afrezza vs. Josep vs. Kazan vs, Lainadan

I guess you can make an argument for that, but as a RAW issue I think of them as pretty distinct actions. Firstly, obviously, there are two very different spells - one is Fly, the other is Levitate. Importantly, Levitate uses no fly check (and it also penalizes attacks and doesn't give any move speed).

From an intent perspective, I believe I am also in line with our agreement. I am not hovering 40 feet up in the air throwing spells at people.  I am using it as a poor-man's spider-climb (also not flying, even though it allows you to gain some altitude and stay out of reach).

Open to disagreement obviously. Let me know if you want a GM to weigh in.

All good, Kazan.

Also, unfortunately, I am going to have to call 48 hours on Lainadan. Its been almost three days since my post on Friday, and two since my clarification on my proper position. I hate doing that, but play by post moves slow enough as it is.

That means I'm up then.

Josep glanced at the immobile rogue and murmured:
"I'm confused, is he dead or not?"

Afrezza catapulting himself to his height came as a surprise. He thought that between gents of magic, they had an understanding... but he should have known better than to trust a magus... tricksy folks. He reacted to the attack by casting a defensive spell, but the precaution proved unnecessary.

He saw the man take one of his images away and mumbled:
"You realize I'll have to make one of these pedestrians my runner up? A shame, really..."
He shook his head and closed his eyes, started casting a spell in a defensive stance.

Relying on his ears only, the wizard let the two cold rays fly at point-blank. One of them magically guided to hit Afrezza square in the chest, the other shot at random but packed with good luck.

SUMMARY:
Josep closes his eyes and casts his signature spell. Afrezza takes 73 cold damage and is disrupted.

If Afrezza somehow survives:
-he might need a fly check to remain airborne (GM confirmation needed on this, as he is not technically flying)
-the spell is disruptive, so concentration checks DC18+spell level required for 1 round.

Josep has yet a move action to take, waiting to see the result of the attack before posting it.

Since this is likely to come up, closing one's eye to become blinded has been used in this Battle Royale: link to a message in this game message #71
(specifically to negate mirror image, too)
Though what kind of action it constitutes was left unspecified.
GM, if you think it should be a move action, please let me know.

OOC: Question for the rest of the fight and your post.. You managed to do the concentration check to cast defensively without AOO, but you're still shooting someone in melee. Shouldn't that be worth an AOO too? It does not change the result of your attack (the spell is already cast), but Afrezza might get an attack still i think?

Hmm, good point.
While it seems unnecessarily harsh towards spells that involve a ranged attack, RAW I see no reason why he would not get an aoo.

The rays are both ranged attacks, so they actually provoke 2 AoOs if I could take them. It may be good-night Afrezza, but I will check in later.

Found this here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/combat.html:
paizo:
Ranged Touch Spells in Combat: Some spells allow you to make a ranged touch attack as part of the casting of the spell. These attacks are made as part of the spell and do not require a separate action. Ranged touch attacks provoke an attack of opportunity, even if the spell that causes the attacks was cast defensively. Unless otherwise noted, ranged touch attacks cannot be held until a later turn.

So yes, you do get an AoO.
(I don't think each ray provokes an individual AoO, but that is unclear)

1 aoo for ranged (once total for both Rays)
+1 aoo for spell. - eliminated by defensive casting.

Functionally blinding yourself by closing your eyes isn't an action, so listing it as free is fine. To prevent shenanigans, it needs to be the first thing you do on your round, and the blind condition lasts until the start of your next turn.

Per Paizo's FAQ: "Note that a spell that fires multiple simultaneous rays, such as scorching ray, only provokes one AOO for making the ranged attack instead of one AOO for each ranged attack."

Levitate doesn't require concentration checks to do what it does.

As a force effect, does a shield spell affect my AC vs the rays?
quote:
Shield creates an invisible shield of force that hovers in front of you. It negates magic missile attacks directed at you. The disk also provides a +4 shield bonus to AC. This bonus applies against incorporeal touch attacks, since it is a force effect. The shield has no armor check penalty or arcane spell failure chance.

Re: Battle Royale #5: Afrezza vs. Josep vs. Kazan vs, Lainadan

Afrezza lashes out, but his blade finds only illusion. He is frozen in place by a devastating combination of cold blasts to the chests. Even his smug smile is locked in place, unmoving. His dead body floats eerily in the air.

14:13, Today: Afrezza rolled 21,8,2 using 1d20+10,1d6+6,1d5 with rolls of 11,2,2. AoO for ranged attack and miss chance (5=Josep) AC8. - Destroy a figment

Also, did you add the -4 penalty for being blinded?
Actually, it doesn't matter. Even if you take -4 and I get +4 for shield that still leaves an attack roll of 19 vs a TAC of 19.

It's a pretty nifty way to nullify that spell. As a free action you can open your eyes at the end of the attack, so you effectively just make mirror image a flat 50% miss and -4 penalty to hit. Nicely played.

Re: Battle Royale #5: Afrezza vs. Josep vs. Kazan vs, Lainadan

Thank you; note that Josep is effectively treated as blinded until the beginning of his next turn (even if for fluff I could say he opens his eyes). Mirror image is still very good, even with that loophole.

Updated post with my move action:

With no visual indication, Josep could only guess that a blade that had lashed at him had missed, and that the sudden silence that ensued meant his freezing rays had indeed turned the magus to an ice statue.

He uttered at the top of his lungs, addressing not only the gladiators in the arena but also those outside whom he might face some day.
"Let that be a warning to all... next time try and aim for second place."

In a lower tone, but sill heard across the arena, he shouted:
"Swashbuckler! I suggest you take care of that rogue now, lest he go home with a silver medal."

OOC: Holy shit it worked! Maybe this is all for nothing, but people will have a great show today!! (For dramatic effect, listen to this while reading the post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uxJxMjz3Io)

Kazan smiles to himself. He would not be made a fool of today! He was more than capable of doing that on his own. He climbed the ramparts, still shining from the glitterdust and shouted for all to hear while raising a fist in the air: "ARE YOU READY FOLKS? HERE IT COMES!!" He then rushed towards Josep at blinding speed, even faster than the previous rounds. He jumped the last gap while screaming: "KAZAAAAAAANNNN TAAACKLE!!!!" and blindsided josep, pushing him off the ledge. He then yelled again: "KAAZAAAANNNN FALLIIING STAAARRR!!" And followed in the tackle, a shining Kazan dropped elbow first into josep. He rolled over from Josep and said in a lower voice "I always go for the gold, even if it seems impossible." Meanwhile, Josep's frozen body, having been pushed by the tackle floats gently away.

Wow! I give you points for style, that's for sure...

There are however a few things I will have to dispute (otherwise it wouldn't be fun...)
 - unless you have improved bull rush, I suppose you provoke an aoo from Josep (who happens to be threatening with claws)
 - more importantly, you would have to roll miss chance for mirror image (Josep still has 3 figments, so 1 in 4 chances)
 - would Josep get a chance to hold onto the ledge? Would Kazan?
(I imagine a hilarious scene with the two of them holding for dear life, both hands in the air, looking at each other)
 - finally I should point out my CMD is 10, not 12 --not that it matters

(also, Josep does the freezing around here, he doesn't get frozen ;)

Re: Battle Royale #5: Afrezza vs. Josep vs. Kazan vs, Lainadan

OOC: I agree on some but not all your points

- Yes you get an AOO. I did not see you had taken out your claws (rawr)
- I do not have to roll a miss chance due to mirror image:
When mirror image is cast, 1d4 images plus one image per three caster levels (maximum eight images total) are created. These images remain in your space and move with you, mimicking your movements, sounds, and actions exactly. Whenever you are attacked or are the target of a spell that requires an attack roll, there is a possibility that the attack targets one of your images instead.
There is no attack roll, it's a combat maneuver check.
-Yes, we can both try to hold on to the Ledge (Reflex DC20)

Given the results of these, the actions might (slightly) change.

And yes, it was a typo for the name on my part, i was too excited :P
