Poll #20: City of Swords Campaign Setting

Hypothetically, if the City of Swordaine were an actual campaign setting focused around the arena and urban adventure/intrigue near the arena, would you play it?

And, on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being "only play if I have nothing better to do" and 5 being "OMG why didn't we think of this before, YES", which would you rate this idea?

(This question has no bearing on this arena game. I was just considering the possibility of writing up a setting for it.)

This poll is an open discussion. No rewards but also no restrictions on format. Just open discussion IF you're interested in the idea. Ignore the post if you're not interested.

I am interested, and I would play with you as a GM. I would give this idea a 4 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 - a campaign built around an arena and the city it's in would be pretty amazing. Start your characters as lowly slaves and make them work their way up to prestige and power.

4/5 - I agree sounds fun, probably want to restrict classes to mostly melee

4 out of 5
I love the scenario, especially if it would be a like a Greek/Roman styled campaign.

Poll #20: City of Swords Campaign Setting

I'm gonna be the kiss ass and give this idea 5 out of 5 stars because i love role playing more than i love throwing numbers together and getting my ass handed to me relentlessly.  :D

and if we're going with hiro's sentiment about starting out as slaves, i think i know whose guild hall we all would be starting in. (Mine. Cause i'm the one with slaves.)

But seriously Arkrim, if you wrote this campaign setting you have to put Hiro, Josep and I in as high level NPCs along with some of our lesser compatriots. (Ugrim, Opal, and Tiaca from my end anyways. They're basically Latro's retainers.)

It's already in the works. It's a gladitorial arena. Start off as slaves, fight your way up the ranks and/or escape.

Should be a very John of Mars/Planet Hulk/Dark Sun-esque type campaign. Starting with just module 1 and a few house feats/spells.

Open to any suggestions or requests you guys want to make here in this thread.

Poll #20: City of Swords Campaign Setting

I like the idea! 4/5

A question I have is how guilds would relate into it. Usually, guilds have some political authority. If we are all serfs, how would a guild of serfs have that much authority?

Well, you guys can roleplay being whatever you want. In the campaign everyone will have a different backstory. Serfs/slaves to a guild, official members/mercenaries, high ranking citizens, young nobles with nothing better to do than go thrill-seeking in the arena despite your family's warnings, whatever. You can even be a noble or citizen who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was captured and nobody recognized who you were nor would they listen because you didn't have any identification on you at the time. Maybe you're an innocent person framed for a crime and turned into a gladiatorial slave as punishment? Who knows. Backstories are entirely up to you, as long as they fit.

The guilds themselves are merely organizations that gather freelancers together. You can have all types of freelancers of any profession, although the most common are "muscle for hire" and "magical craftsman". Guilds grant a character special rights, protections and boons. Instead of begging for scraps, you're guaranteed work when you need it and can take time off when you see fit and negotiate rates and have paperwork processed by people more experienced with bureaucracy than yourself. The guild enforces contracts so you don't have to worry about being betrayed or swindled and they take only a small % of your profit. Guild competition also helps the economy as prices and services are constantly competitive to win over a patron's business.

In a world constantly at war, warriors and magic are an ever-necessary resource and in a global economy (yes, that's right, a fantasy world with a global economy) they are used as both as soldiers and currency by rich factions. A "seasoned warrior" or "master magician" (high level character) are precious resources from a political perspective. Many even become political leaders themselves.

So think of "guild" as "company/union". You have some small guilds and some big guilds. The guilds you guys have created here are all small because our game is small (only 16 players using 24 characters).
