Clearly, the carrying capacity is a non-issue ; sentient creatures carry themselves.
On one hand, it seems only fair to allow a spellcaster to craft a Construct, just as a Summoner would have an Eidolon or a Ranger an Animal Companion. The feat/features/gold investment is very similar, so it doesn't seem unbalanced.
On the other hand, "Animal companions, familiars, cohorts, special mounts, eidolons and summoned creatures are allowed but not hirelings, followers or purchased creatures," and "Crafting an item merely means that you acquire it for half the normal GP/BP cost".
That is to say that even if you craft the item, you're still using a "purchased creature".
I have to rule the Animated Catapult illegal, unless GM Arkrim amends this rule.
