Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

It really depends on if the +10 DC/foot of thickness of the walls applies in this situation.

Seeing as opal did not actively use stealth, her base DC to find her is DC7 (-10 + stealth bonus (18 17)) <-- forgot to account for Dex drain

Opal did make loud noises during her turn and did move. However, that was before somatra spirited her away to parts unknown so i'm honestly completely unsure if the -20 would apply here.
Perhaps if they were trying to find her at her old location, then sure, they could find her old location.
however seeing as she has a new location, I makes it a bit tricky, logically speaking.

However, lets assume she is till taking the -20.
thats a DC-13 to find her.
ignoring distance for a moment, Adding in even just one wall shoots that up to 37 which is just enough to hid opal from him. and there are a lot of walls in between Opal and At-vat right now.
I'm going to say ultimately this is a ref call though because i'm biased.

Edit: forgot my dex was lower that on my sheet.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

That could however mean that Opal is standing at E13 with a passive DC37 to find her even though At-vat would need to move only 5 feet to see her or 10 feet to reach her. Unless paizo has written something about perception always happening in a straight line, I don’t see that happening. Maybe there’s room for a reactive stealth roll on her part though, paizo specifies that it’s made as part of movement and not part of a move action.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Well, if you're using sight, generally speaking, yes, it is pretty much a straight line. You can't see something behind you if your not looking directly at it.

With sound, speaking as an audio engineer, yeah, sound does tend to travel around objects, but the sound becomes dampened and looses a lot of its quality the further it travels and the more it has to move around things so the best way to hear something is directly from the source into your ear, or, a straight line from source to receptacle. (that's why we have headphones. :P)

Now, if we're thinking about a labyrinth of stone walls in the dream realm underground somewhere, sound is going to be reflected very heavily the further it travels, meaning its going to go further but its going to become distorted and fold in upon itself so hearing something and pinpointing it is going to be very difficult because by the time the sound reaches you, it's either all but gone, or its been echoing so much its next to impossible to tell where it came from originally.

But, once again, I'll default to the ref on this one.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

sorry about not commenting sooner was very busy, Opal and Vry before I answer those questions fully need Somatra to explain in PM how the particular ability used is available.

In general I treat an open room as straight line and as long as no wall is going to the roof just distance to creature +/- any modifiers picked up during turn.

If walls go to the ceiling but there is an opening/open door measure distance through opening and around whatever obstruction that block the path floor to ceiling.

If in room with door shut then thickness of wall counts.

Thank you Somatra, next just drop a reply with a private to line that way everything is in this thread.

As for the perception I count it as a DC -1

Again, the scratching, scraping noise can be heard from all over the labyrinth - although this time much louder. Then that shimmering field appears, moving, changing, seemingly alive colors dancing under the ceiling. A lethal danger, but such a fascinating sight...

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Opal says something to her familiar in a language only the two of them share and Svog nods in understanding and creates a small rock from nothing with his innate magical powers. Then, Opal casts a spell and then reaches deep into her heroic reserves to cast yet another. suddenly, there is an abrupt silence. As if Opal, Svog, and Somatra have completely vanished from the battle field.

DICE ROLLS:
06:48, Today: Madam Opal rolled -3 using 1d20-7 with rolls of 4.  Stealth, Opal.
06:49, Today: Madam Opal rolled 32 using 1d20+19 with rolls of 13.  Stealth, Svog.

SUMMARY: Opal and svog scheme with one another. Svog creates a rock. opal empowers somatra with the ability to see things as they truly are. then casts silence. Everything is suddenly very quiet.

OOC: So, now that silence is up, it is impossible to hear where we are if silence is in the path from them to us which means the creatures need to rely on sight and smell (if they have it) to find us. or, you know, tack on +10 to the difficulty to hear us through ever foot of silence they need to hear through. Either is fine with me. Either way, it just got hella hard for them to perceive us anymore.

Secondary OOC: Wow that was a pretty complicated post. Hopefully i didn't fudge anything up.
