Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Grunyar has given me permission to post basic actions for somatra in lue of a 48h skip.

somatra will follow opal to ** where she will stealth and she and opal will have that private conversation in hushed whispers.

14:09, Today: Madam Opal rolled 36 using 1d20+19 with rolls of 17.  Stealth for somatra, rolled by Opal with presumed modifiers.

Not a sound reaches the brave heroes, as the monsters cast their spells and discuss their situation in their ancient, wicked language.

I guess I may have chose my words wrong, what I was meaning was you did not need all the private to lines and such as that would require Somatra giving you info .  Just a FYI it's in the rules that once 48hrs is called in team matches another team member can post for them as long as he/she beats the ref to post the turn skip I just poked you to give you a chance in case you did not see that addition to the rules.

Why am I being skipped?  It hasn't been 48 hours since my last post, I was just trying to get clarification from Opal before I posted Somatra's action.

No need to stealth off and whisper.  Everything that was conveyed was stuff Opal would've conveyed before the dimension door or could be conveyed through gestures.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

To clarify: the located objects should be on Opal and Somatra, and my monsters should discern the direction to where they are.

“Locate Object 0/100”
Should be added to both of their ongoing effects declarations, and as far as I understand they will for this time constantly know the direction of the items.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Also, the rules state that a summoning pc needs to be able to actually converse with their summoned beings in order to direct them. I’m thinking the same goes here too: you guys need to be able to converse, to converse. Silence makes that impossible, and you gotta pull out some other tricks to actually converse without my monsters hearing it, right?

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Hmm. that's a very interesting spell useage and I don't like where it could lead so i'm going to attempt to invalidate it to the best of my rules lawyering abilities.

also, seeing as I'm  pressed for time as far as a 48h mark goes, i'll be concise and to the point.

are magic items unique enough to the point where a locate object spell would differentiate a "headband" from a "magic headband." same applies to a battle axe.

second, assuming locate object just lumps all things of one category into the same pile, regardless of if they're magical or not, locate object's spell effect is an area spell with no indication of if it is a burst, emanation, or spread effect. I'm inclined towards an imitation emanation effect as it does state that even a thin layer of lead blocks the spell so in order for them to locate our gear, they need a clear uninterrupted line of effect from them to us.

but that will ultimately be a ref call on that.

I'm going to get my post ready in the meantime.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

(Written before I saw Grunyar’s response, but might still hold some value: )

1) The objects targeted are ones the monsters have seen - the two casters did attack the person wearing the item they target, and are thus focusing on a item matching everything they’ve seen (you have chosen to label your headband a “headband” and so I see no reason why the headband can’t be located using a visual represantation matching but not specific to the item that has been seen on Opal).
2) Spell specifically mentions lead, not stone walls as with detect undead or so, and so I think if there is no lead around the headband - there should be no problem.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Opal darts away from her hiding spot, drawing her entier spell component pouch as she does. Procuring the material she needs for one final spell against the creatures, she drop the pouch to her side before uttering a foul incantation.

"I hope you boys/girls/whatever you are like octopus, cause it's all you can eat!!!"

Suddenly from the walls, ceiling, and floor sprout an endless amount of black tentacles that reach and grab at Opal's foes. Opal begins cackling madly as her creature begins crushing her foes in it's grip. Opa'ls cackling is then suddenly cut off.

Detect object reads very solidly north for the headband.

OOC: Hopefully, we won't actually need to go through with our super secret plan, but I'm prepared to give my life for it.
Side note, i'm not sure if damage for black tentacles is rolled separately or collectively like the grapple check is, but if it is separately, the first damage is applied to At-vat and the second is applied to Urr.
Secondary side note: the black tentacles do extend out the side of the wall and, in some areas, drip down from the ceilings. There is next to no escape for poor At-Vat and Urr unless they truly are some kind of incorporeal menace.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

because silence is an emanation effect and the place where she ended her movement was out of range of the silence spell due to stone walls halting the effect.
She fell under the effect of silence again because the one who is carrying the silence spell around moved to a place where the emanation could reach her again (but only after the spell had been cast.)

Yup. Opal's a tricksy character more than a powerhouse. An the target of Opal's silence spell will always be listed next to the spell duration in a private line to the ref so if there are ever any questions about it, the immediate reference is there.

Two of the strangely humanoid creatures struggle against tentacles erupting from around them, their faces blank and expressionless, and failing to get out of the grasp they mumble ancient syllables up the corridor. Rreti meanwhile, is working on one of the trick walls - behind which the Witch seems to have just cast a spell. Nambtand slides, his walking pattern and posture awkwardly skewed, around the wall to the other side of the witch - staring at her with eyes so distant they seem detached from his mind.

15:51, Today: Vry rolled 27 using 1d20+14 with rolls of 13.  Rreti Disable Device vs DC 22.
16:20, Today: Vry rolled 27 using 1d20+16 with rolls of 11.  Nambtand free Perception.

SUMMARY: Rreti steps towards the wall, starts disabling it (succeeding, wall opens at initiative 21.4 next round). At-vat and Urr struggle against the tentacles, fail, cannot move further and so do not do anything specific. Nambtand (perception 27) moves and takes a good position for attacking the witch.

OOC: At-vat and Urr take damage as expected from Black Tentacles, but listed HP is correct.
Nambtand is constantly sensing the direction of the battleaxe, and so if Somatra stands straight to the east or right around the corner, it should be aware of her presence. I'm not particularly picky about how this plays out (I guess she will get a sneak attack), but if Nambtand's turn is interrupted while moving, I hope I get to both finish that move and to specify the second action as appropriate given new information. :)
Also, been looking up the rules better. From what I understand the actual opening of the wall takes a full round (as with summoning), but the action is a full-round action (as in, move + standard action). And from what I understand, it's not possible to make diagonal steps across a wall so I'm counting nearly no diagonals within these tunnels.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

So a couple of things on my end.

1st, as you stated, there are no five foot steps through walls yet that's what Rheti took to get to L10 so it shouldn't be able to disable device on the wall in M10.

2nd, when Nambtand gets to O8 it's hearing is completely cut out and it sees a small dinosaur in O10. It hisses at Nambtand though no sound is produced. So Nambtand can't end his turn in N10.

Finally, i did my research and finally figured out what these things are. This is more a question for the ref than anything but does the plane of dreams have planner connections? the only real way to access it is through highly specialized spells or by falling asleep and creating a demiplane while one does. So would these things even have access to their fast healing at this point in time?

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

5-foot step: well shit, funny how I missed that. So Rreti just moves (10ft) then, no disabling.

Small dinosaur: upon seeing the intended point of stopping blocked, Nambtand continues and moves to the east, to R11 instead.

Planar connections: The plane, or dimension of dreams, should be the easiest way to connect to the plateau of Leng, actually.

Leng
Some blasphemous texts say that Leng is part of the Dimension of Dreams, while others suggest it is only accessible through the dimension. Little is known about this place, even by the most learned of sages, so few answers about Leng's true nature are forthcoming.

Each force cube is enchanted with mythic anti-magical barriers that not only make them immune to magic but also bar teleportation and dimensional gateways from moving through them. Summoning creatures into and teleportation within the arena function normally, you just can't escape. The ceiling allows weather, water, sound and energy through, but not objects or creatures (so spells like Call Lightning work normally).

Monster Ability:
A [Monster, the type of which is still very much unknown to the general public :P ] maintains a connection to Leng at all times, and when away from Leng, it has fast healing 5. It loses this ability on Leng or in areas where planar connections do not function.

In doing my research before setting the game up, I thought it likely that the planar connection - which doesn't have to be very strong, powerful or specific given that we are pretty much on the same plane - will work in this setting.

Entire map has a roof 15 feet above ground level, the ceiling and floor is magically strengthened.
The walls can be opened with a Disable Device DC22 check, or broken with a DC14 strength check.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

With my middle quote, I wanted to emphasize that from the arena "you just can't escape", and that most spell effects can make their way inside the walls - including summoning extraplanar creatures, so that shouldn't be a hindrance.
