Haha, didn't think about that! :) I thought the whole thing would open (a bit complicated with our flying otherwise too, since the walls are removed from the map :P ) and thought it reasonable given that they're trick walls, but we'll see what our ref refs!

We're in for the long haul with all the DR and resistance.  I've done over 100 points of damage, At-Vat's just shrugging it all off.  At least this next time I'm definitely going to remember to add on the bleeding attack to the sneak attack.

Trick Walls: All walls are actually locked doors. Disable device DC 10 + APL and break DC is 10 + 1/4 APL. This does not apply to pathways thicker than 1 square but this does allow doorways to lead in every direction (even up and down).

You only open one 5*5 section of wall

Alright. How do I proceed? Do I redo Urr’s turn from the position T8+2 where he was when he realized he couldn’t bite her? Does he do nothing? (I have spent three of his turns and one of At-vat’s to set this one bite up... ;) )

Levitate gives a penalty when attacking with a weapon. These creatures have natural attacks, which in universal monster rules is called

quote:
(attacks made without a weapon)

So I guess I should apply no such penalty at all, actually!

you need to redo U's turn, once levitated Urr may do a disable device on the correct door now

Thank you, that was my plan!
21:37, Today: Vry rolled 21 using 1d20+14 with rolls of 7.  Urr disable device vs DC22.
Fail. Urr is in T8+2, no damage to Opal but she is grappled.

In reply to Vry (msg # 151):

Thats pretty choice reading as i'm fairly certain natural attacks are still considered weapons in any instance. I'm pretty certain spells are the only thing that bypass Levitate's attack decrease. But as Opal remain unhit, i'll let it slide for now. ;)

But also, can Namb can even initiate a grapple on opal considering he's already grappled? Does grappling require two hands?
The feat Grabbing Style seems to suggest it does, or at the very least requires two hands to not take a -4 penalty to hit.

I leave it to our ref to make the call on that.

Assuming Namb can in fact make the grapple while grappled, i'll ask for that sweet, sweet reroll with correct modifiers as even at a -4, namb still hits with his misfortune reroll, unless the levitate penalties have not been accounted for in which case, i'll ask those be added in as well so i can slip passed this grapple without subjecting vry to have to reroll any more.

Also also, I went ahead and updated the Map as of Vry's post and U's redon turn to include walls that have been disabled in some form or fashion. so (+3) will indicate walls that are traversable at +0 anything beyond that i guess we'll just figure out, though i anticipate once U actually disables the wall he wants (+1) will suffice.

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

-4 included in roll for having only one hand, and -2 from being grappled!
I agree it’s choice reading but differentiating between weapon attacks and other attack rolls is important, as CMB too would fall into the second category - not incurring a penalty but being penalized from already being off balance... I can see thematically how a swing with a long sword and a bite would work in different ways with balance. :)

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/l/levitate/
“Attacks with a melee or ranged weapon”

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/besti...les/#Natural_Attacks
“(Attacks made without a weapon)”

Those are the lines I’m referring to! I’ll reroll including levitate penalty of -2 if appropriate.
Good job with the map!

In reply to Madam Opal (msg # 157):

Well barring anything you want to call attention to, the natural attacks do not get the penalty it does specify weapons and monster rules say
quote:
Most creatures possess one or more natural attacks (attacks made without a weapon). These attacks fall into one of two categories, primary and secondary attacks.

As for the grapple I saw some opinions say you could not grapple with the grappled condition but I could not find any reference to it so as long as he is taking all the proper penalties should be able to grapple another creature.

Also without the feats/abilities to grapple Opal gets an AoO for him trying to grapple

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Though Opal dodges most of the attacks, her swift movement inadvertently put her directly into the clutches of Nabtand who, despite it's misfortune, manages to grab ahold of the witch.

Opal looks infuriated. The wasps sting nambtand, forcing him to grow nauseated again. Opal gathers her strength from across time and space and places yet another hex upon At-Vat and Rehti, subjecting them to the same misfortune that plagues Nabtand.

"You may yet kill me,." Opal growls at the three surrounding her. "But I will take great pleasure in knowing that I gave you this much trouble." She cackles once more. Continuing the trend of maintaining the debilitating effects of her hexes.

SUMMARY: The swarm continues to sting and nauseate Nambtand. DC13 fort save vs nauseation. Should he fail this save he will be unable to maintain the grapple and be forced to release it at the start of the monster's turn.

Opal Places a Misfortune Hex on At-vat and Rheti DC23 will save negates the effect entirely. Otherwise it persists for 2 rounds. They and Nabtand then must succeed vs Opal's Cackle, DC 23 or have the duration of all hexes afflicting them be extended for one round. If they are affected by misfortune, the must roll twice and take the worst result.
She can target two people with her single target Hexes due to her Split Hex feat.

The tentacles are basically an obstruction at this point.

OOC: fingers crossed somatra can kill one of them this round or Nambtand fails his fort save. Otherwise I have a feeling Opal is going to be taking a lot of damage.

The rolls quoted above are indeed affected by misfortune, additionally:
CMB+12
Grappled condition: -2 to attack rolls, cannot take action with two hands
Grapple maneuver: if unable to grapple with two hands, -4 to CMB
Total -6

(Since grappled affects in various different ways, I hope I didn’t miss anything :) )

SUMMARY: Nambtand saves vs nausea. Misfortune & cackle - no-one saves. At-vat takes sneak attack damage as normal including bleed, but saves vs slowing.
Urr disables the wall at +2 between him and Opal (open at my next turn). Nambtand maintains grapple (roll 18) and inflicts Bite damage (4 damage, 3 dex drain - 19 fort save reduces to 1). Rreti full attacks opal, inflicting 3 damage with a roll to hit of 29. At-vat full attacks Opal, inflicting 4+3 damage and 4 dexterity drain (dc 19 fortitude reduces to 1 drain).
Total: a whooping 14 damage dealt to Opal. 3 + 4 dexterity drain however, requiring two fort 19 saves.

OOC: Haha, the sneak attacks are sooooon properly set up! :P I suppose my choice of map wasn't as good as I thought,
but it did fit with that initial flavor :D Hope I've got all the durations and effects right...

Re: Monster Hunt #18: Vry vs. Opal & Somatra

Opal does her best to avoid the onslaught but her best simply isn't enough in this situation. Growing quite weary from the injuries she's taken the old witch's demeanor changes entirely.

Gone are her playful antics. Her voice echoes with an etherial tone with great authority. "SLEEEP!" She bellows and suddenly Rheti and Nambtand feel a wave of drowsiness wash over them.

Svog remains where he is, the Wasps sting relentlessly.

10:13, Today: Madam Opal rolled 4 using 2d6 with rolls of 1,3.  Swarm Damage.

SUMMARY: Opal places a Sleeping hex upon Nambtand and Rheti. DC23 Will save or fall asleep for 1 round because arena imminites. All must succeed vs Opal's Cackle. Cackle does not effect the time Opal's Sleep Hex remains in effect. DC23 Will.
If Nambtand fails his will save vs Sleep or Nausia, At-vat will get an AoO vs Opal as she flies away.

The swarm continues to sting and nauseate Nambtand. DC13 fort save vs nauseation. Should he fail this save he will be unable to maintain the grapple and be forced to release it at the start of the monster's turn. However, should he fail his save vs sleep, the swarm will wake him from damage

The tentacles are basically an obstruction at this point.

OOC: Time to implement the new rules Arkrim is enforcing. I have included conditional branches for my actions. I leave it to the ref to implement them as I don't believe players rolling on behalf of anyone is a thing right now. Or Vry can roll it when they see this. :P
On a side note, Opal has reached the limit for how much Dex drain she can take before she falls below half health. Thanks Arena immunities. :D

Two of the monsters are held by the magic, the others close in again on the witch who somehow got past the tight swarm of levitating enemies, and try to attack her.

<Orange>OOC: Not exactly like I can change my bow's properties in the middle of combat.  Its only 1d6 cold damage anyway.  Most of the damage if just piercing from a magic weapon.  And I just need to keep stealthing and circling around for a sneak attacks.  Like I've said before, death of a thousand cuts.
