Duel #227: Latro vs. Josep

Josep appears in the eighth section of the arena opposite and out of sight of Latro. He's wearing the champion's belt, and has a neat shiny buckler strapped to his arm.

Instead of his trademark dodo, he is accompanied by a small grey humanoid creature by the name of Pedro. Who looks hella cute.

Now a classic start to any arcane user, Josep produces a scroll and bends time to his will. The rest is a blur to everyone.

As things slow down, the public can enjoy the sight of Josep turned into a hellish dragon, his companion turned into an other type of equally troubled dragon, and a retinue of devilish fallen angels preceding them, weapons at the ready. They all move with uncanny celerity.

"Latro! I see your transformation is now complete... glad to see that you're now in a body with which you're finally comfortable..."

"Let's make this quick, shall we?"

Duel #227: Latro vs. Josep

Latro smiles, knowing full well what Josep's first action in the arena would be. He had been waiting. Studying the chaotically shifting rules of the arena. Josep had missed something and it was all too sweet to behold.

As Josep pulls his scroll from his pocket and reads it aloud, the arcane words swirl with might around him. However, the time pocket he creates for himself cracks and breaks under the power of the arena, leaving josep standing in real time with no chance to continue his display of arcana might. Even the jumbo-tron malfunctions under the power of the arena's rule.

You've activated my trap card: The Rule's Lawyer
Per the rules on magic for the arena you are unable to cast time stop at your current level. You must have a number of HD equal to twice the level of the spell you're attempting to use. As your HD is 17, the only spells you are capable of casting are lvl 8 spells and below.
My request is that the scroll fizzles when Josep tries to use it, ending his turn.

quote:
Spell Level
Under no circumstances will a creature or their minion be able to cast a spell or spell-like ability with a spell level greater than half their HD (rounded down), not even through a magic item or special race or class feature that explicitly allows them to.

Duel #227: Latro vs. Josep

That is evidently an oversight in the writing of that rule, at level 17 Josep can cast level 9 spells on a daily basis.
I agree with the spirit if that rule, but it should obviously say half your HD rounded up — at least for cleric/druid/wizard.

Boa, what do you think?

EDIT: I just read the rule again, RAW it means a 1st level cleric can’t cast cure light wounds, or a 1st level wizard magic missile. Clearly the rule as intended is that you can’t cast anything of a higher level than what your spell caster level normally allows.

Duel #227: Latro vs. Josep

In reply to Josep Gavinho (msg # 13):

Barring GM putting his thoughts in unfortunately Latro is right. I agree with you that it handicaps your class 1 or 2 spells here or there but with the inclusion of class feature I feel GM knew what the rule would do.  Everyone starts at 5th lvl or so, so the argument of 1st lvl is invalid.
