Nerissa listens to Jennor and nods her head. She couldn't have stated her concerns any better.

She says to the woman, "I'll have the ordinary and ale, please."

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Thayna adds her own question to Jennor's.  If they won't mind extra passenger, Does your ship have enough room for, th four of use and our horse and a pack animal?

Thayna waits for the Captain to reply to Jennor's and her questions to be answered.  She turns her eyes and body on the Ogier.  The huge figures were intimidating even sitting down being taller that Thayna standing up all the way, but Thayna was determined.

When the Captain was finished responding and headed off immediately towards the two Ogier, stopping at the table so that they both can see her.

"Sirs, I understand you have hired Captain Naren's ship for tomorrow.  I and my friends seek passage going south as quickly as possible.  The Captain said it would be up to you to give us permission to join you."  Thayna finished deliberately not mentioning the option of them refusing such permission.

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Dalir was not oblivious to being gestured at, the group having already caught his attention, but he didn't leap to any hasty conclusions regarding why he and his companion had been pointed to.  Far more weighing on his mind at that moment was how to answer Cayl's latest move on the stones board.  There was no rush; he was keeping a complete record of their game in his journal anyways, so wherever they were, so long as a stones board was available, he could reconstruct the game and they could resume it.  No point rushing into an ill-considered move just to move quickly.  Removing his pipe from between his teeth, he said to Cayl, "We may have company in a moment.  The new arrivals appear to have some interest in us."

As his observation quickly proved true, Dalir looked over at the human woman who had inquired of him and, trying not to feel insulted by her lack of basic courtesies or introduction, said, "Good evening to you to madam.  I hope your health be well this night.  I am Dalir, son of Truan, son of Kormal of Stedding Jonghai, and my companion is Cayl, son of Paryn, son of Leyn of Stedding Yontiang.  To whom do we have the honor of speaking?"  He did his best to keep all sarcasm out of his voice, but he wasn't certain he had avoided a touch of irony creeping in as he observed the courtesies and made introductions as if he were responding to like etiquette on her part.

Thayna had never meet any Ogier in person before and realized that their introductions are very formal.  She tries a different tack with them. "I am Thayna Dadei, of Arad Doman."

"Accepted in the White Tower," she adds dropping her voice so that only the Ogier can hear her--hopefully  "I and my companions ned to move south and quickly--as possible."

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Completely failing to notice Thayna's desire for discretion, or possibly even outright secrecy, Dalir's voice actually grew louder in his excitement.  "The White Tower?!  Really?!  My companion and I are going on to Tar Valon after Whitebridge and Caemlyn, Accepted Thayna Debei of the Aes Sedai" he said with enthusiasm.  He hadn't actually mentioned to Cayl that part yet, thinking to convince him to travel there after they'd already reached Caemlyn.  After all, once they were in Caemlyn, Tar Valon would be along the way home to Cayl's stedding near Kinslayer's Dagger.  However, in his pleased surprise, he forgot those plans had not yet been broached with his traveling companion.

"Are you going back to Tar Valon?  If so, perhaps we could travel together.  I'm sure we could find much to discuss along the way and it would make the miles pass much easier."  Gesturing for her to pull a seat up to the end of the table, he invited in a more normal tone of voice, "Please, join us Accepted, and we can discuss traveling together.  The boat is paid for as far as Whitebridge, so if your road is not to Tar Valon, but to points farther south, I'm afraid you shall have to negotiate that passage with the Captain."

"Thank yo," Thayna replied taking the chair and arranging her divided skirts before sitting. this gave her a moment to collect her thoughts She motions the other over, "As soon as they arrive I would like to introduce the other members of our party."

"We are headed south first, well south into Andor.  If you are going that far we would like to travel with you and help pay the costs.

Hmmmming in his deep throat, he eventually speaks up.  "Tar Valon could have someone around who has been cut off from the True Source.  If they'd be willing to talk... I might be able to put some serious thought into that theory on our people Dalir!"

Seeming quite excited himself Cayl nods his head a couple times then speaks again, "And in Andor, there's a lot I have heard about the wonderful Black Yew Tree.  That's mostly in the western segments of Andor though, but that could be a fun trip as well.  Supposedly the way it grows makes it quite resilient.  I would love a chance to feel their melody."

As her companion joined her, all Dalir said was, "Thayna Dabei?" with a questioning lilt to his deep Ogier voice and a lifted eyebrow, obviously expecting her to introduce the other woman to the two Ogier and vice versa.

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Nerissa hasn't met a lot of Ogier in her lifetime. So her perception of them is more by reputation second hand than by direct observation first hand. But in either case, her overall conclusions have been that they can be entertaining and yet frustrating at the same time.

It can't hurt to curtsy to each of them, so she does so, "How do you do?" It must be prudent to say less rather than more... and not provoke one of those rambling, long winded responses herself... unless, of course, one wanted to pump them for information! "As an Atha'an Miere, I was going to attempt to bargain with the captain, by demonstrating what I might be able to do to assist with a trip by water, in order to negotiate a lower price for our passage. Do you suppose that that kind of argument would work with Ogier?

I haven't met a lot of Ogier, and I'll wager that you haven't met a lot of Atha'an Miere either! Well, here is one!"
She curtsies again. "If you have information on travel by water already, perhaps I could learn something from you. On the other hand, if you don't, and might be interested, you might ask me questions about the same. What say you! Might you be interested in talk about the island of Tremalking? Have you ever traveled there?"
She smiles to herself. Have I opened the flood gates... or not?

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Ahlandra continues to act the part of the guard. Ogier were known to the Borderlanders, but this was the first time she had every seen or heard them.  Very quickly she got the idea that there were certain protocols that the Ogier deemed essential to an introduction, she could see that in their reactions to the Aes Sedai going straight to the point of the reason they came to see the Ogier, with out even introducing themselves.  Even now Nerissa had not introduced herself to the Ogier.

Another thing Ahlandra knew of them was that they hungered for knowledge of the world outside their steddings.

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Captain Naren scratched his head answering Jennor.

"Oh they are Ogier you know, they got more names than anyone else but from what I have memorized they are Dalir, son of Truan and Cayl, son of Paryn but as you might know their real names are far longer than that." He paused pondering the next question.

"From what I have been told south... it is the only route you can travel on the river from here. I haven't really been told how far south they wish to go. Myself is actually going the whole way to Illian. We are leaving at dawn." Turning to the additional question from Thayna he added. "If that is only four horses and one pack animal, it should work without problem... and you don't throw in more surprises."

Thayna Dabei:
"This my companion Neriussa Nelan Accepted of the White Tower, also Jennor Elan, and Ahlandra si Bashere Kellen," she gestures towards each of them.

As he is introduced, Jennor Elan bowed to both of the Ogier and said in a polite tone, {Old Tongue} "Greetings Dalir, son of Truan and Cayl, son of Paryn; may you both always walk among the living green and enjoy the tall shade of ancient trees.  As Accepted Dabei has stated, I am Sir Jennor of the noble Altaran House of Elan, warder-in-training from the White Tower.

It is an honor and privilege to meet not one but two of the fabled wardens of the trees.  This is my first such meeting, so I ask your indulgence for any lapse in protocol or manners.  As the Accepted have said, we would be most grateful for your assistance by allowing us to share your vessel, at least part of the way, for our joint travel southwards along the river."

Thayna was well aware of the arrival of their food on a nearby table. However it would be impolite to leave at this point.  She could always reheat any liquids later solid food was more iffy.   She had learned that earlier so she sat quietly waiting for the Ogier to respond. Jennor spoke to the Ogier in Old Tongue, however, Thayna did not understand about half of it.  She decided that on the trip south Jennor could help to teach her.

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Nerissa considers: In normal protocol, males are introduced to females. And in Ogier culture, I believe females are given extra consideration. It is true that these Ogier are probably older, which might be what these two are counting on for precedence. Or they are simply exiles who don't know any better, maybe are outlaws who have been banned from their stedding. Or perhaps their legendary slowness is at work here... or their game is just more important than courtesy.

I have curtsied twice to the one, and no response. I'll wait a moment or two, and then I'm off to sleep. If I end up going back to the White Tower, at least I'll have retained my self respect.

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Dalir had waited nonplussed as Thayna introduced he companions to the Ogier, but completely failed to introduce the Ogier to her companions.  He didn't even notice her "Domani female wiles."  They apparently didn't teach Ogier style seductiveness to Domani daughters, not that she'd have had the ears for it anyways.  His sense of propriety was partially appeased when the knight greeted them by name, having apparently already heard them, though he did shortend Dalir's already considerably shortened introduction.  Then he went and made his comment about trees and Dalir went from mollified to distinctly unhappy.  In a quite gruff tone that in his deep voice sounded nearly menacing, he replied to the knight, {Old Tongue}"One, you've only met one.  Blood and bloody ashes if I'll have anything to do with the bloody trees.  I'm a Builder; I leave the trees in the hands of those better suited to such tasks."  With the last, he gestured with his pipe in the direction of his companion.  "But still, Warder-in-Training Sir Jennor of the noble House of Elan, I am honored to make your acquaintance."

Wishing to leave the touchy subject, he returned his gaze to the Atha'an Miere and replied to her inquiry in a tone closer to his normal manner of speaking, {Borderlands}"Never having traveled south of the Borderlands, I have neither ridden on a ship, nor met one of your people before, Accepted Neriussa Nelan of the White Tower.  Tremalking I know of only as a name on a map.  This trip south will in fact be my first time ever even being on a boat.  I would be happy to discuss your island.  Perhaps you can tell me of its stonework and its fortifications while we travel south."  Including both the new females in his gaze as he began to turn from one to the other, he decided he would have to repeat his introduction for their benefit since their companion had not seen fit to do so.  "As I mentioned to Accepted Thayna Dabei, I am Dalir, son of Truan, son of Kormal of Stedding Jonghai, and my companion is Cayl, son of Paryn, son of Leyn of Stedding Yontiang."

Completing his turn to the last companion Thayna had introduced, Dalir said to her, "Ahlandra si Bashere Kellen I am very pleased to meet you as well, and hope, that should your people ever raise the flag of Malkier once more, they will allow me the opportunity to design defenses against the Trolloc hoards for them.  In the meantime, I would appreciate the opportunity to present my plans for Saldaean defenses to you in the hopes of winning your support and patronage in my plans of presenting them to the Great Captain Marshall-General Davram Bashere and Queen Tenobia.  Given the opportunity there is much I think my people can do to aid in the defense of yours."

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Nerissa relaxes and thinks that it's the case of Ogier slowness that is at work on her temper. It has been several years since she met one at the White Tower, and had forgotten how frustrating that they can be...

"I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Dalir of Stedding Jonghai. Please try to forgive our human abruptness and we will try to acclimate outselves to what we perceive to be Ogier slowness. It is likely that it will take time for this to happen! So, please try not to be offended, and I'm sure that we will try to do the same.

It has been a very long day for us. I, in particular, am exhausted, and need my rest. Please excuse me."

She nods to the other Ogier and leaves to speak to the woman who offered food and drink. "May I have a bowl of stew and a mug of ale to take to my room, please? I am very tired... That was the large room to accommodate three people. Thanks."

Ahlandra remembered her lessons in etiquette and courtly graces, "I am pleased to meet you, Dalir, son of Truan, son of Kormal of Stedding Jonghai, and you Cayl, son of Paryn, son of Leyn of Stedding Yontiang."

She salutes the two Ogier with a bow, it would be ridiculous to curtesy wearing armor and weapons.

"I am Ahlandra, Daughter of Elandar, son of Morrand of the House of Bashan Kellan of Malkier."  She left out the titles, as they did not matter at this point.

"I would be glad to view your plans and I train for the day we win Malkier back from the Blight."

Dalir:
In a quite gruff tone that in his deep voice sounded nearly menacing, he replied to the knight, {Old Tongue}"One, you've only met one.  Blood and bloody ashes if I'll have anything to do with the bloody trees.  I'm a Builder; I leave the trees in the hands of those better suited to such tasks."  With the last, he gestured with his pipe in the direction of his companion.  "But still, Warder-in-Training Sir Jennor of the noble House of Elan, I am honored to make your acquaintance."

It was clear that Jennor had indeed taken offense at the Ogier's tone.  Jennor had done his best to be polite and was rudely and unjustly rebuffed for his efforts.  Jennor's eyes narrowed and a slightly grim look formed on his face as he replied in an emotionless, neutral tone, {Common: Ebou Dar} "Very well Dalir, son of Truan, son of Kormal of Stedding Jonghai... I shall certainly remember your distinctly blunt distaste of trees for future reference.  Though perhaps your personal issues with trees need not be openly expressed in quite such colorful terms, nay?"

Jennor took a deep breath and slowly let it out as his facial expression eased and then he added in a more cordial tone, "Nevertheless, I am pleased to meet both you and your quiet companion, Cayl, son of Paryn, son of Leyn of Stedding Yontiang."

Perhaps Nerissa has the right idea?  Maybe it is time to cut our losses and get some bloody sleep.  I thought Ogier were slow to anger, but this Dalir seems an awfully touchy fellow!  I only hope his companion Cayl proves to be more like the legends I have heard tell since my youth... or this could be a particularly unpleasant and tense boat ride down river.

Re: Chapter 3.1: Hunt for the traitor
Dalir was rather embarrassed by his outburst, but be referred to as any version of Treebrother always grated on him deeply.  The plants had made it quite clear they repudiated any relationship with him, so he refused to acknowledge on with them.  However, he dislike showing his emotions so forcefully, especially to those he had just met.  He would have apologized, but decided it was probably best to build the boulder into the wall rather than dig up the mountain.  When Thayna made her excuses and departed, he decided to seize upon the quite valid point to make his escape.  Hopefully they could start fresh in the morning.

"Yes, it is getting quite late, Accepted.  As we depart at first light, I should probably seek my rest as well."  As he said that, he drained what was left of his drink and took up his journal to complete his recording of their game to date.  "Cayl, we can continue some other time," he said to his original companion, then said to all of his new companions, "I am honored to have met you all and look forward to discussing many things during our travels together.  I will see you all in the morning."  He was, however, slow to depart, not wanting to be further rude and walk away if they had more to say to him.

Jennor bade the two Ogier a good evening and retired for the evening to get as much rest as possible to prepare for an early rise the next morning.
