Character Creation: MANDATORY READING!
Attributes: 7/5/3
Abilities: 13/9/5
Backgrounds: 7 (Generation max 4 dots without my approval)
Disciplines: 3 (1 dot each in your 3 clan disciplines)
Virtues: 7
Freebies: 20

Loyalties: This is a Camarilla game therefore all PC's must be marginally loyal to the Camarilla and well rounded enough to deal with life in the Camarilla. However joining the Anarch cause is possible.

Merits & Flaws: 7 points COMBINED (all negative numbers convert to positive for purposes of calculating this total).

Banned Merits & Flaws: Unbondable, Magic Resistance, Blase, Iron Will, and any others I find are crap as we develop your character.

Allowed Clans: Assamite, Brujah, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, Ventrue, Giovanni, Daughters of Cacophony, Caitiff, Setite

Banned Clans: Any Antitribu, True Brujah, Old Clan Tzimisce, Nagarajah, Salubri of any flavor, Baali, and some others I can't think of right now...

Capped Clans: No clans are currently capped.

Recommended Clans: Brujah, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador




Banned Merits & Flaws: Iron Will, Unbondable, Blase, Misplaced Heart, Magic Resistance, and any others I find are broken pieces of poo on the way.

A Word On Backgrounds:

If you take Mentor, Influence, Contacts, Allies, Resources, etc... I need you to do some additional work. A sentence or two on who, what, and where these things came from and what they do. Don't just tell me you have Influence 3 and its in Transportation. Is it commercial Transportation? Port Authority? Bus system? Subways? Taxi company? Car dealership? A small trucking or delivery company? See what I did there? I just took your vague Influence and made it useless because you can't tell me what its from. Explain them or you won't be able to use them. For more info see the House Rules.

Character Backgrounds
A short biography / background of your character is mandatory here at NYU. This background should primarily focus on their mortal life as most of you will be playing newly embraced, or very young Kindred.

As you write there are some questions I want you to keep in mind. Not all of these need to be answered. Answering many of them as you can will help you develop a well rounded character. Did your PC suffer through anything traumatic? The death of a sibling, parent, close friend, or even a close family pet? That loss is a life changing event. How did your character cope with it? Who, or what did they turn to? Did they have a family? Were they close to their family? Were they abusive, or loving? Were they good a good parent, child, husband or wife? What work did they do? Was it what they loved doing or was it just a pay check? Were they workaholics, or did they slack? Did they have one steady job or did they have many short ones? Did they travel a lot? Were they even from NYC, or from somewhere else entirely? Who were their closest friends? How was their embraced handled? Was their death faked, or did they simply drop off the planet? Is their family likely to still be looking for them? What about their friends? Did they leave children behind?

Building your PC up as a mortal will make their embrace that much more traumatic. Nobody is embraced and immediately takes to it. Part of this game is dealing with the struggle to adjust to what you've become: An immortal parasite who must hide his existence from the very thing he needs to survive.

The next thing I'm asking is that you keep this as short as possible. Quality writing over quantity. Be concise. Keep it simple. If you write me a book I can promise you I will not read it. Which means you just wasted your time. Two, three, maybe four paragraphs should be plenty.

That does not mean you can't add more later. Feel free to continue to grow your character's bio as you go. I will reward Experience Points to those who continue to add to their backgrounds as they play. However, again, this is quality over quantity. Do not expect a huge return on investment if you point out adding what amounts to six paragraphs of gibberish to your character.




SHORT AND LONG TERM GOALS

I am including these here because it should be straight forward.

Three or four (each) Short and Long term goals are mandatory. These goals do not necessarily have to involve things your character would know about. Instead they should be things you as the player are interested in. These can be as realistic or fantastic as you like. I can find just as many plot devices with, "Take over the NYC docks," as a I can, "Find the Ark of the Covenant."

I recommend making most of these realistic in nature. Completing goals will result in substantial EXP rewards versus simply completing threads. Think of them like missions in a typical sandbox RPG: Sure, you can wander around the Capital Wasteland grinding to that next level, or you can do that quest Amata gave you when you went back to Vault 101. Likewise having some purely for the RP will also have substantial rewards. Here is an example:

Short Term Goals
  1. Find a new haven.
  2. Get accepted by the Prince.
  3. Impress my Sire.
  4. Find other Kindred interested in Kindred history.


Long Term Goals
  1. Impress the Prince.
  2. Gain Influence over Manhattan College.
  3. Find / translate a piece of the Book of Nod.

Player Character Profile
If you Click on Character Details and find your character from the drop down list and click "Edit Profile" you'll see two lines you can fill in:

Biography pt 1
Biography pt 2

Pt 1 should contain any titles your character has as well as Their Status(es).
Pt 2 Will have your Social Attributes.

Example:
Pt 1: Sheriff;S3;CS3   <- Note the lack of spaces.
Pt 2: Man:4 Cha:2 App:2


Some of you are going to have status from more than one group so you will abbreviate it like so, x is equal to your rating:


Camarilla Status = Sx
Clan Status      = CSx
Elder Status     = ESx
Anarch Status    = ASx
Sabbat Status    = SSx


Please list all of them separately (S2:CS2 and not SCS2 or S&CS2).
I'm sure I'm being picky with that, but I prefer to idiot proof as much as possible, and having that data in the profile eliminates a lot of guess work for other players and myself.

Social Attributes should be used by Players to help determine their own reactions to different NPCs and PCs. Always play your Character's Nature and Demeanor, just use those as a bit of an assist.



CHARACTER PORTRAITS:
If you would like to link an image into your character info by all means do so. However it must be tasteful and reasonably small. At no point should I have to scroll passed some insanely large photo to get to your Character's Description. They should not be linked into a character sheet. That is what the Description page is for.

And again, they need to be tasteful. Any pictures outside the bounds of common decency will be deleted with extreme prejudice, a ban issued, and probably followed by a report to the Moderators. My game is not the place to show off your image collection of sexy women in various states of undress.

Concepts
I've gotten a lot of questions about Concept and what I recommend for the game. Concept is a funny subject for me. They do not ultimately define your PC, and can even be limiting in my opinion. Your Background, and how you play, will do that. However some people like to come up with one before beginning to fill in the rest of the sheet. If you're not one of those people feel free to skip this. If you are; here you go:

I prefer originality and creativity over anything else. Do not be the player who hands me the Vietnam Sniper that is inevitably going to be a Celerity and Potence pumped up Brujah whose only skill is his ability to shoot things from impossible distances. You should avoid anything overplayed or cliched unless you are certain you can put an intensely interesting spin on it.

As far as what the "Chronicle needs." Well, to be frank the Chronicle doesn't need anything. You only have to worry about what the troupe needs when you're playing a troupe style game, and NYU is not a troupe style game. It can transition from your PC working on solo plots to your working on plots involving multiple characters depending on how we want to play. Besides, in the real world things are never really assembled that completely.

Ultimately you're going to need to build your character around something you want to play and find interesting. Follow the order I've set for the Character Creation process and I can pretty well promise you we'll get you there.

Building Your PC & Sheet Template
THE BUILD

This is mainly going to focus on my philosophy with building a sheet. After many, many discussions and many, many sheets I've found the method below to give you the most bang for your buck:

Spend Freebies on Attributes first. They're expensive-ish to raise with EXP, there's only nine of them and they pair with something for almost every roll. You want to be good at something? Buff an Attribute. Backgrounds are my next favorite place to spend Freebies because they're 1 for 1, making them cheap and easy. Buying a -new- ability isn't usually worth it with Freebies but 2 points to buff one up to 3 or 4 is usually worthwhile too.

I almost never buy Disciplines with Freebies. They're incredibly expensive at all times and you get more for your dollar buying other things with Freebies. Out of Clan Disciplines are great, and often easy, plot devices and developing those (and the relationships necessary to get them) IC will often net you EXP gains outside of the 2 per thread.

Just my two cents. It's worked out well for me so far.



THE CHARACTER SHEET TEMPLATE

I do not have an official character sheet template for this game and I probably never will.

However I do have some guidelines for your sheets: First thing, your sheet must be in some logical order. Generally speaking, Character Information up top, Attributes, Skills, Backgrounds, Disciplines, and everything else from there. Do not make me feel like I'm playing Wheres Waldo trying to find your Conscience rating!

Your sheet will have the below EXP tracker on it somewhere, and you will use it.
