Re: Time Out Called.
Lucky...good genetics are often the key to good health. :) I am hardly large and germanic... :)
Sparring is a little rough on the joints, but at least you get a bit more (bit!) of an approximation of fighting. It preps you for getting hit, at least, and shows you some serious holes (unless you're doing point sparring, which in no way approximates fighting). I'm throttling back because I was getting hurt a bit too often (I'm 'not the largest' in the class :), and we don't use pads or gloves), and the groundwork was starting to wrench my back and other things.
I know what you mean - my knee injury comes from sparring, I have a permenent injury in the back from a guillotine choke during sparring (my partner applied, realized he was grappling with me, and panicked), and yes, lots of swollen fingers (but that could also be from practicing with wooden knives, and sticks).
Still, I've looked at statistics. I have a friend who plays golf. She has massive back problems, and shoulder/wrist issues. I knew people who played hockey - they have much worse long term problems than I. And football...ugh.
Martial arts is rated pretty high in terms of safety and long term injuries, simply because you're fighting with professionals (none of us spar with beginners - you never, ever spar with a beginner. It's too easy to get badly hurt). Since the fighting is the point, it's regulated.
Unfortunately, like any 'sport', injuries will occur (especially when you're small, and the big guys dribble you around the Kwoon).
There's a very good Taiji teacher here in town (fighting Taiji, not just health, Chen style), but I'm sticking with what I have for now. I'll wait until I'm a little older. :) I love my style, I love my club, I love my Kung Fu brothers and sisters, and I love sifu (who is also pretty knowledgable about putting me back together...). :) When I'm old(er) and (more) decrepit, I'll go to Kee Hong's school. I agree with you - I absolutely ADORE chen Taiji. :)
