Tylen Orgesh:
Speed readers only look at a line of text once and can 'read' the whole line at the same time. The best (I believe JFK was one) can literally run a finger down a page of text and assimilate it.
That's pretty much how I do it. I've taken speed reading tests and gotten back ridiculous results when tested for content. I do LESS well when the test requires me to read every single word.

On a practical note - that is why you should never spell and grammar check your own writing - if it is an important document, get some one else to do it and they will pick up all the small things you miss.
Absolutely.
Also, it's why one should always have someone preread one's stories, or at least wait a month after writing them before editing them for content. If I write a scene, I know exactly what I'm picturing in my head when the words hit the page. Every time I read it, while I'm remembering that picture,
whether or not the written word upholds what I'm trying to describe, I'll probably 'see' the same thing, because I know what I was trying to convey.
Without that preliminary picture, a reader might get a completely different impression from what one has written. I've had some hilarious comments on my writing from time to time... :D
