Happy new year, indeed!  :)

I'll resume my more-or-less normal posting schedule as of Monday.  In between, I'll try to get stuff in here and there.

Re: Happy New Year, Everyone!

Loved this.

quote:
The waiter takes Saskia's order, and makes suggestions for side dishes and drinks that work well with bochok sausage. With the order finalised, he heads of and returns a short while later with a plate of salad and a glass of something blue and steaming...

Shui returns to her cabin and calls up an inventory of the ship's stores.  All of the basics are there, freeze-dried and compacted for reduce storage requirements, and she has small, but adequate, supplies of seasonings, spices and herbs to liven up the menu.  A quick search of the ship's library data doesn't provide much information on the local cuisine, beyond a quick mention of something called bochok sausage, with a recommendation to avoid it.  Phlume's lack of any kind of accessible network makes it impossible to contact local data sources.

Emphasis mine.  :)

Apologies for my lack of being around.  Things have stabilized, mostly.  I should be here on a more consistent basis.

Am just catching up in all my games today.

Fixed that for you...

These guys really are fanatical.  If you've eaten any animal products within the last three or four days they can smell it on you, and they will kill you for being a carnivore...

Luckily they live beyond the far side of the Imperium, and are currently sitting about, sulking, because the pacifistic Hivers managed to beat them in a war, simply by scaring them.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
The Hivers demonstrated that they were able to manipulate K'kree society on a single colony world, in such a way that that specific population deviated from what other K'kree would consider "normal".  The K'kree realised that, if they kept pushing, the Hivers would, eventually, change enough of their society to make it significantly different from what they were used to.  The Hyper-conservative K'kree were so horrified by this idea that they promptly backed off, nuked the "tainted" world from orbit (it's the only way to be sure) until it became a glowing cinder, then quarantined the cinder.

Hmmm.... I was trying to be charitable. But your way works, too!  So, thank you, BBR!   And yeah, Hivers do actually scare me more; that whole 'unknown known' thang.

I was also being charitable.  See how I generously gave them all those extra descriptive bits?  :p

Droyne always scared me.  They're weird.  And mysterious.  And they have a warrior caste.  And super weapons (even by TL 15 standards).

'Tis why we love you, BBR.  You go that extra mile!  :D

If only they could remember how to make and maintain them.  Hell, if only the Droyne could remember that they were (potentially) the Ancients.  Or the slaves of them.  Or whatever... Hell, we could have all be the slaves of the Ancients.  Or just an afterthought/failed experiment...

EDIT:  Oh, and Happy Mother's Day everyone.  Best wishes from our family to yours!

Yes, yes there is something wrong with it.  They apply the knowledge that you ate a chicken sandwich for lunch three days ago to the entire species - "Shui ate a chicken sandwich, therefore all humans are carnivores."

Worse yet, they assume that a carnivore can't change it's spots - "What's that you say, some of these humans never eat meat and we should spare those ones?  Preposterous!  What if they revert?  Kill them all, then kill all the other carnivores on the planet, destroy those pesky forests, and seed the whole world with our favourite blend of grasses and shrubs."

Hmmm... I thought the 'worse yet' part was (as you previously noted) that K'kree aren't the aliens that are the truly worrisome of the lot...:D

See, that falls apart right away.

Shui would never eat a chicken sandwich.

Well...on the one hand, it's extreme.

On the other....

^_^

No, Shui would never endorse killing people who didn't eat a plant-based diet.

They can only try, not do.  :p

Plants react too, you know.  We should all eat synthetic, bland protein.  Or better yet, genetically alter us so we don't need to consume anything, merely absorb sunrays and radiation...

Yeah, right.  I'll eat what I want, just be glad I'm not a cannibal.  :p

Talking of straw men... may I point out the Llellewyloly.  A minor race in Traveller, living on a single world (Junidy, in the Spinward Marches).  The Llellewyloly are, in fact sentient plants.

Are you really sure they aren't some sort of Welsh candy in disguise?
