Sea of Fallen Stars: OOC

Here is the place to unwind men, a place to relax and talk about anything you don't want the pirates to hear...and a place for the Foxy one to hunt down his crew.

Varlath, you still out there, I need an action for this round of combat.

Don't worry about them, I always put the hardest enemies in the front of the adventure, just like video games....honest.....

You and Brald got off lucky, after those first blows I couldn't roll over 17 or 18 again to save my life, and the damn things had a +11 to hit...I only gave them 1 attack instead of two, but I figured that was enough ;).

I missed on 80% of my attacks, and the only times I did hit, I think they were wasted because you hit too Varul.

I thought I was dead for sure when I had 1 hp left after the first round, as the average damage they did was enough to take me less than -9 if I got hit again

Re: XP!

Because 'flicking the switch' NEVER, EVER results in that secret passageway opening up, or that hitherto unseen chest that was chained to the roof and full to the brim with shitloads of treasure suddenly lowering itself to ground level, or a ring of 3 wishes falling out of the slot at the bottom of the machine.

It is ALWAYS a switch placed there by some unnamed NPC with a sick sense of humour who figured, "Yeah, I am SURE to suck somebody into flicking this", then suddenly the world opens up beneath them into a bottomless chasm, or they are lightning bolted for 10d6 or something.

Anyhow.....I've flicked it. Tell Mummy I love 'er.

Sad times

Hey all, let me first start off by apologizing for my excessive absence. I recently nabbed a promotion at work, and found myself swamped with more hours. I thought they would die down, but it turns out it hasn't, and they won't. Yet another example of the rat race taking an avid player out of D&D :รพ

As such, I will be pulling out of all my RoA games and drifing into the forgotten background, maybe to be brought back some other time. Again, sorry everyone, especially you DM, for having to put up with me not being here.

I need a marching order for you all...Renny being the coward that he is will remain in the middle of the group, he has a dagger with him and takes a pin from the ship to act as a club...but don't expect him to know how to use them. (mainly because I always forget about the NPC in battle).  Also, I'm gonna gloss over some of the stuff here for the long walks and what not to try to advance the game so we can get Koopa into the game, don't want her getting bored and signing onto a new ship.

I'm fine with any plot device/etc that brings her (or any new) pc in early.

I've been the one waiting before, and it sucks.  And there is almost always something the DM can do to bring a character in.

off the top of my head:
1) She is native to the island we're on
2) She is shipwrecked and castaway on the island we're on
3) She's been assigned to spy on this island by any of several orgainizations/power groups
4) the old "she drops from the sky/appears from midair"  - a one-way portal, a gate, a powerful being sending her, etc...

They are both fumarole.

A fumarole where the water does not steam off is called a Hot Spring.
One where the heat is so great that the water is turn into steam is a Steam vent.

Welcome Tagen. Glad to see you decided to join the real men on the pirate hunters' ship. They all wear pink dresses on the other boat.

I wouldn't worry too much about not having any sailing skill.  There are plenty of sailors on our boat :).

Sorry about my posting rate guys, back to finals again for me, have Accounting today and economics monday....and I'm not really ready for either yet.  I plan to post something and get us sailing tomorrow, so if your going to go shopping do it today, for those of you who were on the treasure hunt, go ahead and spend or save the cash as you see fit, and unless your getting something really wierd consider the town to have it.

Re: Island

sorry all.

I've been very busy with a job change and getting ready for a move.
In fact, I'm actually moving on Monday, and will be returning my cable modem to Comcast today.  I do have backup dialup, but I will probably be on very inrequently and briefly for the next week or so.

I was away last weekend, and while I was able to catch up on my other games, the sheer post count you guy have racked up since I was last active is frankly, intimidating.

So, expect me back around April 1st.  I may be on before then via dialup, but there are no guarantees.

An idea for an alternate map. Removing the interior graph lines makes for a clearer picture and you can still determine which square you are in. Stole this from another game I'm in.

Ok then.....if we're all sticking our hands in the air and making it a fully democratic decision, I'll say this:

******************

If this campaign were just the 3 of us, I would say FOR SURE take the boat and create our own pirate hunting outfit. It's what all sailors should aspire to.

BUT

We have to kill a heap of PLAYER-CONTROLLED pirates. And I figure no matter what ANYONE says we will have a better chance with clarke and his pet.

Therefore we are suicidal if we keep the boat and go off ourselves.

*******************

Does any of that make sense to anybody?

Re: Island

Not that I'm pesimistic or anything, but I have a bad feeling about Tagen's chances. This is his first excursion so he is only 3rd level and with the modifiers and spells I've seen I suspect the rest of you (and probably the pirates) are somewhat higher.

Anyway, none of that bothers me, but I'd like to stay with the Swiftwynd and her crew. So I'm requesting permission to be able to replace him with a new character (one built for sailing) and stay with the Swiftwynd should he fall.

I know, I know. Don't get the cart before the horse. I'm actually using a reverse phsychology trick here. By talking about his potential demise I am in fact guaranteeing that he will survive the encounter and probably be the one that saves the day with that critical roll and a critical time :)

I am a simple melee...who can intmidate at range..so lets see if I can shake the up as I rage onto the their ship.

Once we know they are pirates:

I say we fire the Balista for sure as much as possible until we board...

And if we have spell casters they should lob any area effects spells the have when they can.  Same for you...for they will be worthless once we board.

Your pet should wait until all area effects spells are completed before attacking..and only 1 round before we board...That should be a suprise.

Fido's not gonna be able to do much, unless she can jump out of the water and onto their ship, other than that I'm gonna have her bull rush the ship to see if we can't hole her right away...and maybe knock a few of them down.

I've got 1 ice storm at 640' (other slot is a dispell magic)

3 call lighting at 160'

2 flaming sphere at 160' 1 barkskin/spider climb (summon)

and 2 produce flame at 120' 3x clw (summon)

My intention is to stay about 150' away, that should do for most spells/bows, and allow us to use our balista...I'm not sure what they are planning for us, but I'm willing to bet it won't be pretty.

Re: Island

Just as a first impression:

The main thing we have going for us is Captain Clarke. He is 2.6-squizillion-times more powerful than I am, and I am quite formidable.

But I have a pretty good plan:

1) Clarke gives me water breathing and I jump into the water, whistle to my own Fido (a massive dolphin on steroids) to take me to their ship, and have Fido at my flank.

2) When I get there, if they are smart enough to have submarinal guards, Fido can take care of them.

3) Meanwhile, I cast wood shape into their hull. I can affect over a dozen cubic feet of wood and shape it any way I like. I think in fact that I could sink the Titanic with this spell. I'm pretty sure their boat will last only a few rounds, and the boat CERTAINLY won't be manouvreable after I do it.

4) After a short period of time waiting on the horizon, you will see their boat start to sink, and the possible limbs of their submarinal guards being thrown into the air by Fido.

5) At this point, Clarke moves our ship within his own range of firepower and hits it with everything we've got. Call Lightnings, ballista bolts, crossbows, long range darts, harsh language. Whatever wets your whistle.

6) After maybe 2 rounds of punishment of this nature they will be smashed to the shithouse, and within another couple of rounds they will all be in the sea.

7) The captain and myself summon a couple of dozen sharks on steroids (can you say 'augment summoning'?) to eat the pirates and return so we can sift through their foeces for magic items.

Seems fairly straight forward to me :).

Any advances on that?

Greetings!!!

Hello, everyone.  I will be taking over the Hunter bubble region and harassing the pirates very soon; just getting caught up on the game thread info and brainstorming with DM N1nj4cow on the up coming battle sequence with the pirates.

Would all the hunters that are still around please send me a PM or post "I'm here", so I know who my players are real fast?

Hope everyone is still here and doing well.  Sounds like we will have 2-3 new players joining the region very soon, so we should get things moving very soon.

I also would like to know from everyone what type of gaming style you like to play, i.e. combat/hack&slash, investigation/mystery/problem-solving, diplomacy/social roleplaying, or a combination of the above?

Also, start brainstorming on the combat tactics you want to use in the coming ship combat and boarding action.

I'm with Varul regarding game style. At least with this character anyway. My preference is:
1) Combat
2) Investigation
3) Diplomacy
4) Puzzles

I consider puzzles to be separate from investigation/mystery plots. And they drive me a little batty because I can never figure them out! Usually I enjoy investigation and mysteries the most. I usually play rogues and have the skills to actually make an impact in such plots. With this character I’m looking forward to bashing some heads.

I may be of some assistance with the ranged parts.  :)  at least, when songwind comes back.   my play style is "adventuring".  I like to stay in character whil achieving goals, be they combat or puzzles or anything achievable.  I enjoy strategy and beatdowns, and think every thing should be roleplayed a good deal, but don't like things to get bogged down by it.  The adventuring is first, and good roleplay is part of it.  and i love gaining new skills/levling too :)

so yeah, lets kick pirate butt.

lol if we don't wish to save it, fire, fire fire.  more fire

if we do( my personal fave, as i'd love to see a fleet) we need boarding strategies.  and closing strategies.  I suggest ranks in climb/tumble, so swinging over is possible from ropes.  and possible a fog cloud or some spell cast on them to make them unable to avoid us.

What do we know, or speculate, about these pirates? Do we stand a chance against them in boarding? Is their ship worth the effort? What's in their holds? Do we need to try and take them alive for any reason? In short, is there any good reason to NOT sink them outright?

You would need about 7 people to crew a ship of that size per shift and don't forget.  There will be about 20 regular npc sailors on your ship joining in on the boarding action and sailing your ship, so don't think it will be just the players engaging the pirate crew.

Looks like I'm in as well, though I'll wait for DM Songwind to tell me whether I'm in IC yet, or if I need to wait.

I'll be playing the wannabe navigator/captain that you don't want to be anywhere near when he has a chain in his hands, at least if he thinks of you as an enemy.

Or at least that's the intent.  We'll see how it plays out in action. :-)

Hands, it sounds like between you and me, we can push for a tricky style of combat.

I'll probably get through all of the threads I can get to, but it would be nice to know which ones are the hot topics.

Re: Strategy

OK everyone.  We are going to start things rolling on Friday in the Hunters/Pirates: Battles at sea! thread for the ship to ship and boarding action combat.

The Hunters: On the trail thread will be used for the player roleplaying interaction IC among the Hunters players.

When posting your actions during combat I want everyone to post there actions each round regardless of what your initiative is as soon as possible and then I'll make a summary entry of those action results for the round.  I don't want to do a round robin posting of actions by players based on initiative scores.  It takes too long and RL has a tendency to rear its ugly head; causing slow posting and waiting for the person in front of you in the intitiative order to post.

DM Songwind, I am all for posting actions as soon as possible. You're right that it does speed things up and that's a great thing! However from past experience I have learned there needs to be some method in place to handle Useless Actions. Will we have an opportunity to change our actions based on the summary and initiative? For instance:

Initiative:
1) Umbril
2) Bad Guy
3) Hands

Hands posts first that he will try to disarm Bad Guy. Umbril posts later that he will attack Bad Guy. Umbril’s rolls are enough to kill Bad Guy. Obviously at this point there’s no reason for Hands to try and disarm him. What would we do at that point?

I have played in the past where each PC had an “Overall Objective” for each round. If Hand’s objective is “find the nearest enemy and disarm him and then fight him” then you, DM, could go ahead and designate a different opponent what would still fit Hand’s objective. Yes, it is a little complicated but is generally a good idea to help everyone decide their actions no matter what their initiative is.

Re: Strategy

Or you could just post secondary actions in case something dies/ runs away and your first action is impossible.  I'm sure the gm will let you change actions if you respond in time too.

Then again, true roleplay would say all of it happens in the same 6 seconds, with very minor staggering for in what order it happens, so everybody would state their intentions, and if something can't happen, it happens as best as possible and the rest is lost.  It's assumed the final blow probably happened 3-4 seconds into the round, so its totally unreasonable to say that oh, well i charge the other direction instead and hit *him*, all in 2 seconds.  after all, you would already be moving toward the first guy before the action finished.

Re: Sympathy

Might as well.  If we sink it, they all die, easy xp.  and if they wet it down like we did, well, then we get to fight em and take the ship.  so plan 1, sink, plan 2, take.

Re: Sympathy

Not too bad.  acid doesn't spread like fire.  acid would mess up the parts you hit, but unless it was really stong and ate through the main mast or something, it should only do little patches.

Fire can spread over the entire ship and ruin the whole thing

Acid should be good for things like the sails and rigging.  That'll slow or stop them so that we can board, but there should be enough spares available to at least limp into port.  It's also great for antipersonnel attacks.

Aggravating

You guys know what's really aggravating? A couple times a day I come to RPoL and I see the number of posts for this game is in red which means there's been a new post. And I come in here to check and find nothing new. I know this is because of the other groups playing in RoA 4 but it's still really frustrating.

Sorry for the absense everyone.  If you have posted in the Hunters OOC or Hunter IC threads over the past couple of weeks then give your characters 500XP.

I plan to make a 2 major posts a week (depending on how fast everyone posts) on Late Wed./Early Thurs and on Sat night/Sun morning.  If I start to slack on this then I give you permission to hold me accountable and call me on this.

If you post something in the game thread(s) during the week then you will be rewarded 50 XP plus any additional gaming bonus XPs for your character.

Hey GM, I don't want to complain about this, but I noticed that Zorlax is dropping the Pirates part of the game... I just blasted him for 12 points, and he's a wizard that shoots fireballs.

I don't know how many hit points he has, and I think it would be weak if I did check, but, isn't it possible that since I just whacked him for 12 points, + whatever may happen from 2 rounds of Ballista fire (The captain of our ship said to target him) that he might actually die here?

Why does he get to leave the region when he's getting beat up?

It sounds like RL and the flow of the game was getting to him which is why he wanted to leave the pirates region and I don't blame him for that.

As for the ballista bolts you noticed Zorlax collapsed to the pirate ship's deck just before the cloud of fog came into effect; hurt badly.  One of his teammates was leaning over him.

Fortunately he made his way farther in and Karal "Hands" Enzoe revealed himself to be Human, more or less. He stood six-foot-six and over 250 pounds of all muscle. The reason for his nickname was clear, each of his hands look like they'd been taken from a giant. If Karal hadn't been so large himself his hands might look rediculous. As it is they only look dangerous. The plain white shirt he wore stretched over his physique threatened to rip open if he flexed anything. His tanned hide breeches weren't managing much better. Dozens and dozens of scars crisscrossed his skin in varying lengths and widths. And several of the scarier of them were on his face though none managed to touch his eyes or mouth. Behind the scars, Karal's face was average and still a little boyish though he was 19. His green eyes seldom blinked but were bright and passionate. He kept his blonde hair close cropped so it was difficult to tell if he bothered to wash or brush it. The only visible weapon he carried was a heavy oaken club though it was clear even unarmed this young man was like a force of nature.

Name: Umbril
Race: Human
Class: Paragon / Fighter
Level: 2/2

Name: Varul Reefcrusher
Race: Half-merrow
Class : Barbarian/Ranger/Leviathan Hunter
Level : 5 / 1 / 1

Varul Reefcrusher is a towering 8' tall, if an inch, with a large muscular build. His face, chest and arms are covered with countless battle scars and badly set bones. He looks like he has survived horrendous wounds. His armor is formed of small shards of bone, tied together with fish leather. He carries a trident.

Re: Missing Crew

I have recently taken on co-DM duties in an effort toward helping out and also learning how to be an effective DM on my own. Eventually I'll find an orphan region that needs a DM and I'll fill that position.

Since I'm devoting time elsewhere plus the fact that there has been so little activity here for so long makes me consider resigning my character from this region. I don't know how long before this region will have a new DM but since everything is quiet right now this seems like a good time to quietly make an exit.

I'll try to keep my options open. If a new DM shows up and the group really needs me to hang on awhile until a replacement PC can join in, then I'll give it my best effort. I wanted to let everybody know this instead of just dissapearing with no explaination.

Re: Missing Crew

I have even thought of having Varul Retire....
Since he could only move to another bubble region (since this is one).
And since he has to submerge his body in water daily....

Re: Missing Crew

Ironically enough your patience may just be about to pay off folks.  We have two potential DMs who have asked to look over both the hunters and pirates group so you may just get your long awaited new DM(s) after all.  *fingers crossed*

Re: Missing Crew

Well if we begin anew or pick up from where you left off is up to you. Tell me what you prefer. I will say that I like a good story first and foremost and put emphasis on role-playing over hack and slash. Let me know how you would like to proceed.

Re: Missing Crew

Doesn't matter to me...
I was in a thread by myself, and we had already casued a lot of trouble and freed prisoners....but the Capn is played by the DM.....

Lets just start with your own story line is my vote...

If gildor is in agreement I'll do that since it's what I'd prefer anyways. Anyone got a problem with me renaming the region 'High Seas'?

Re: Missing Crew

I have to be honest, this character was designed to beat heads in. I have other PCs with lots of in depth personality, but Hands is pretty two dimensional. I suppose that might change later if I were to put time and effort into personality development. And as I mentioned yesterday I am taking on DM responsibilities so I don't know if I can maintain this PC in my little remaining free time.

DM Hamster, do you have any other new players coming in? Do you think you'll have need for a big brute on the high seas?

Re: Missing Crew

I find that even big brutes can be role-palyed and are most welcome when combat DOES rear it's ugly head, as it always does.

I knew a palyer once who had a simple half-orc babrarian. This barbarian was one of the most fun characters in role-play just because of the fact the player was role-playing out what a dumb but lovable brute he was.

"Rog no like." Was his catch phrase of choice.

And no I haven't got any new players coming in just yet because I want to make sure that players that are already here get playing.

As I stated above, if the group really needs me to hang on awhile until a replacement PC can join in, then I'll give it my best effort. I suppose since the RoA standard is 2 to 3 posts per week I should be able to handle that for awhile.

I've moved all the old Pirates threads and players into Group 3, for a possible merger with you Hunters into the new Sea Of Fallen Stars region. The one remaining  Pirate, Lilian Espaireith, may choose to join you.
