Terrors of the Underdark

When people think of the Underdark, they think of aberrations. Creatures the human mind could never imagine without actually seeing them...so unnatural in their design that their sight makes the average human feel ill, so evil that they would stop at nothing to extinguish all other life forms. These are the Illithid, the Beholders, the Aboleths.
But even these products of the dreams of madmen cannot possibly inspire the fear that Drow can. How can you hide from a people who use the most powerful of magicks to pierce all illusions? How can you fight a race that trains it's young their entire centuries-long lives in the most deadly arts of combat and battle-magic? How can you reason with a species that revels with demons and would torture you for days just for a modicum of entertainment? No. All you can do is run, run in fear and terror, praying they don't take you alive, from the true terrors of the Underdark.

The Drow.

Re: Terrors of the Underdark

================================================================================

You each awake from your beds soon after the lighting of Narbondel to find a note addressed to you on your bedside table. How it got there is perturbing but upon reading the note you are simply told to "report for duty".

Knowing what you have to do you each get up and prepare yourselves. Tardiness would not be appreciated.

Mezreth stands to his full height and stretches in mistress Feryl's bedroom lavishly. Mezreth had slepted little to none but his kind need little to none sleep anyways. Mezreth quirks his eye brow when Feryl picks up the note.

"Mistress Feryl, what that note is? What it does read."

Hearing Mezreth, Feryl awakens to see the note. She reads it and then shares it's content with her faithful servant and guard, Mezreth. Once she is prepared she will say, "Come. It would not be good for us to be late to this meeting."

Re: Terrors of the Underdark

Kaxxar sits up in his bed and finds the note with disgust. How did I not notice anyone come in! Kaxxar thought to himself. In truth he knew that if the guild wanted the note there with out him noticing it wouldn’t be too hard considering the resources it has. The assassin got up form bed and checked all of his possessions to make sure they were all were he had left them the night before. Once he was satisfied that everything was in place he put on his black explorers clothing with purple trim. Kaxxar grabbed the belt with the equipment needed to complete almost any task he had been trained to perform and headed out into the hall and down in the direction to the room he thought would most likely be the location of the meeting. hopefully I am not already late.

Mezreth nods and replies; "Yes mistress Feryl." Mezreth places his potion belt into order and simply grabs and covers his body whit large sized piwawfi cloak. Of course the cloak does not conceal his size, but it conceals Mezreth's head and if the cloak is kept closed it also covers whole middle body and shoulders. Mezreth follows Feryl and keeps close to her while his alert eyes and ears observe their surroundings while they move to the meeting.

Onde finishes her morning meditations and exercises in the early morning hours within the city.  As her consciousness awakes and becomes more alert to her surrounds returning to her room she notices the note left on her bed.

Opening and reading the letter she smirks.  So it begins...so be it.  She gathers her equipment and proceeds to the meeting site...

Re: Terrors of the Underdark

Each Drow who recieved the letter meets at the predetermined spot. One of numerous small caves of the mantle in the east side of Menzoberranzan. It is well camouflaged and only those with the keenest of senses, magic or those who already knew where it was could possibly find it. Then there was the problem of getting in. A wardstone, stolen from the Dwarves of Ammarindar was the only thing that would allow a person to walk through the illusuary barrier. To anyone else, it was just solid rock. Even those that could see through the magic with their own spells wouldn't be able to get through the barrier without a wardstone...or an ancient Dwarven craftsmen forced into servitude. This was entirely possible though and this is why the two stony-faced guards awaited anyone who passed through the barrier met you on the other side with vicious weapons poised to strike at any moment.

After walking through the ward and seeing the two guards on the other side within the cave Onde calmly stands before them.  She nods in them and says, "Be at peace, my friends.  I do have an invitation."  She holds the letter she received in her hand for the guards to see.
"Let me pass." with some steel in her voice.

[Private to DM N1NJ4C0W:

Once inside he reached into his left sleeve and pulled out the summons that had been left in his room that morning. Any thing else? the assassin said with a wink and walked right passed the two.

The guards, still stony-faced, even in the presence of the Draegloth nod at the messages and allow you to pass. The cave has been made to resemble a Drow noble house, though it lacks most of the comfortable and extravagant furnishings one might usually find in such a place.

The cave is split into 3 floors with a staircase made of stone slabs jutting out of the wall leading to each one. Your appointment is on the top floor with one of the guild masters. He is assigned to the lowlier missions the guild is employed to undertake.

Mezreth moves in front of Feryl Baenre, guarding her from any frontal assault until they have passed trough the gates. After that Mezreth settles besides her, but in position and ready to protect her or assault any attackers coming into the range of his battle claws. Mezreth eyes supiciously the other drow gathered in the hall, but Mezreth does not growl or eye maliciously like most other draegloth do, he is rather wary sorts instead hostile.

[Private to Feryl Baenre: Also note thanks to DM he asked me remove Highborn Drow feat because he thinked I do not qualify because I am 'half-drow' so I repalced the feat whit some uselfull combat feat.]

Upon reaching the room where the meeting will be held Kaxxar takes of his backpack and lays it on the floor. The assassin then leans up against the door frame and waits for everyone else.

"Impatience is not a virtue I admire, mistress Baenre." says a voice whose body it belongs to comes from around a curtain that conceals a dais at the rear of the room.

A sleek Drow male carefully closes the curtain behind him. He clasps his hands in front of him and smiles at the group. I'm glad you arrived this promptly, as there is a time limit on this mission. A Svirfnebli slave with some VERY sensitive information has somehow managed to escape. We suspect he had help so we're sending the five of you just in case. You are to eliminate this Gnome and any of his allies before he reaches the relative safety of Blingdenstone but as far as we know he hasn't left Menzoberranzan yet." he pauses for a second, taking stock of you all.

Mezreth leads on, Drez covering the rear. There are plenty of slave tracks in the area as they are the ones who tend to do most of the harvesting, etc around here. As such, it is difficult to find anything out of the ordinary. Luckily, Mezreth is  an extremely adept tracker and finds a set of Halfling or possibly Gnome tracks heading towards the pole-boat dock where only the Orc shepherd-slaves were supposed to go.

The orc has been ferrying people from the shore to the isle of Rothe for many years. He has a very good idea of what dangers lurk in those dark waters. As such he tries to swim as fast as he can, but without making too many splashes so as not to alert it's denizens. He has almost made it back to the shallows of the lake when suddenly he is dragged underneath the water. You watch with slight amusement as the bubbles coming back to the surface become less and less frequent, until finally they stop.

He could have talked to the male but now it is solely upon Feryl and Onde's shoulders deal or decide how this encounter goes. Mezreth knows the matter is not fussed because of loss of a slave, any house whit any wealth haves hundreds of orcs and they breed fast.

The matter is more of fishing a information whit predix clearly Mezreth's opinion but also direct assault draws more attentin than needed for doing their task. So it is up to Feryl or Onde how they explain their actions and their words weight more than Mezreth's.

There was movement and a figure that could have been a gnome hid themself among the beasts. Maybe they saw us coming

Mezreth finds tracks heading towards the western shore of the isle. They are indeed the size of a small humanoid's and although some are covered by pats Mezreth can follow the trail.

Mezreth was about to fall into the water, having lost his grip on the raft after his long jump. He gnashes his teeth to activate a potion stored in a hollow molar and his form becomes insubstantial. Unfortunately for him, the raft is being pushed at a faster speed than Mezreth's misty body can float. If you want to catch this party of Svirfnebli you must find a way to follow them. Mezreth continues chase the gnomes in misty form, he hustles in his flight now and hopes that any his two companions will either catch him up or that when gnomes go into shore Mezreth cna quickly get into shore and pursuit them whit much superior speed.
[Private to GM: Whit hustle I mean I move 4x my normal speed in my round. I recall you cna do that in gaseous form so I move 40'ft per round. But if Mezreth could reach the shore faster by other route he would do so that he can land into shore and go greet gnomes when they reach the shore. Anycase potion lasts long enough to reach the shore I think, the spell effect lasts after all longer than 12 rounds.

How long distance away gnomes are from Mezreth after this round and how fast their raft moves? Also note that thanks darkness gnomes vision is hindered and would qualify for either moving half normal speed or go astray in their rowing direction.

[Private to Mezreth: OK, Each round the Gnome's raft will get 20' further away from you. You can't get on a raft because you're too big so you can either float slowly to the shore (your potion definately WILL last that long unless someone hits you with a dispel magic which is unlikely) but that will take you another 24 rounds, by which time the Gnomes will be long gone, float back to Onde or dispel your potion & swim to the other side.
Swimming in Donigarten is both illegal (if anyone sees you) & very dangerous. So the choice is yours.

[Private to GM: Note that Neklace of Adaption allows me breathe under circumstances where I would not normaly would be able to. In pratice I can breathe in vacuum, underwater and ignore spells or traps which produce poisonous gas or fumes. In pratice neklace provides me oxygen to breathe always so I am not limited to hold my breath underwater, at least until I lose my neklace that is.

Anycase I asume I am grappled, and Mezreth haves no time to get familiar whatever is lurking below the water he tries escape the grip of the tentacles. I rolled for multiple grapple checks to resolve this quickly but third round one was nat 20, so I escape then automatically (if creature does not get nat 20 also). Take into account I am large so the creature either haves no mods or haves lesser bonus to grapple check thanks being big.

[Private to Mezreth: OK. I tend to only use the necklace as giving an immunity to gases but you're right.
Actually, you're not grappled, instead of rolling a grapple check I would require you to roll either an Escape Artist check or a Strength check, your choice. As well as this, you need to roll a Fortitude Save.

Behind Feryl, she notices that the water has been disturbed & surmises that Mezreth has been pulled under the surface.
Onde searches but finds only Rothe dung & Orc shepherds. Nothing seems amiss, though why the Orcs wouldn't do something about the Gnomes warrants investigation.
[Private to Feryl Baenre: You cannot hear the spiders, though floating out of the area of darkness you see a couple of spider bodies scrabbling about in the water. It seems that the party of Gnomes contains a very smart spellcaster. In regards to Mezreth, as his keeper you know that he has a magic item that will allow him to stay underwater indefinately.]

Far above the group, almost a hundred feet up, an amused mage floated as he watched the gnomes flee.  They had gotten further than he'd thought, he had to admit that, but he suspected the drow in pursuit would catch up with them as they got to the shore.  Time would tell, he thought, and waited in silence, far above the ground.

The Gnomes are about to beach and without Mezreth's additional propulsion, Feryl slows back down again. She is till only 20' away but if Mezreth were there she would be able to get her raft side-to-side with the Gnome's one. Drez is still trailing 40' behind Feryl.
Suddenly, Mezreth pops back up and out of the water, shakes it from his eyes and begins pushing Feryl's raft again.

Drez will beach in the next round.

"I think they're from that Gnome city...uh...Blinderstone or something and I don't know how they smuggled the weapons, I haven't left this island in a tenday." replies the Orc to Onde.
