Game start date:  Sunday, 10/23/2005.  Look for the first posts to appear during the afternoon and the game to begin early evening time.

I live on the east coast of the USA, so we're using eastern standard time when I say "evening" and such.

Oh, sure, just another case of the talls putting us little folk off as long as possible!  We're not going to take this, you won't be able to keep us down forever!  The Hin will rise up, you'll rue the day you put us down!

Re: RoA One Shot Adventures OOC Thread

Howdy all, glad to be gaiming with ya!  Sorry to any 'tall' folk in the game....Lyle's a bit of a racist...doesn't trust people taller than 3'6.... Most talls seem to think all halflings are thiefs, he doesn't like that attitude from the talls...even though its true in his case.  I tend to be a very fast poster, if I start going to fast let me know. I don't want to move us through a RP situation before we are ready....that said I'm not quite sure how I'm going to play Lyle just yet, quiet and mean as hell or a loud mouth whos mean as hell...either way I've been playing peace lovers to long and plan to do some fighting this game!

For those interested I'm Mike from the Fort Wayne area of Indiana, I work weekdays and go to school (this month) on Wednesdays...that'll change next month, and the month after that...doing the accelerated thing to try to get done quicker.  Looking forward to gaming with ya'll.

Hello everybody.  My name is Anthony and I will be gaming with you.  I am physically located in Arizona, as I am stationed here with the US Army.  I work during the week and have school on Monday and Wednesday night, but I try to post multiple times per day if given the opportunity.  Any questions, I can be reached at echoxero@yahoo.com.

Hi everyone. I'm Australian and I'll be playing Emir, an elven Ranger. My name's Daniel, in case you wanted to know, and my posting time is pretty flexible in my timezone, but for you guys it might be at some ungodly hours. Emir is a rather stand-offish character, helping out but not really joining in, if you catch my drift. I look forward to playing with you guys, and having some great roleplaying!

Hi folks,

I'm Jon, and just to make it more international, I'm based in London, UK.

I'm actualy brand spanking new to this concept of online rpg, so bear with me please, but an old hat at the table top stuff.

Kalas is a charming fellow, with a glint in his eye for oppertunity.  Currently attired in the traveling styles recently seen in Waterdeep.  HE's gregarious and likes to socialise.

Re: RoA One Shot Adventures OOC Thread

Glad you're all here!

If one or two other players wish to join within the next few days, I will add them.

The party will not go over 6 members, though.

After Wednesday I expect to move thing along to a point where I want the party solidified, so adding a new member or two after that date would be harder than easier.

When you can, make sure you pick a portrait for your PC and set up your bio lines for your PC, too.  Then pick a color for your caracter's dialogue (speech).

Once all those are done, take a total of 75 XPs for the effort.

Glad we'll be gaming together, and hope you like the adventure!

Mike

(From Pennsylvania in the US.  Age --- older than you.  I teach writing and communication at several area colleges.  Been gaming for far too long and have no blocks of time to allow for tabletop, so have to do my gaming on RPoL now.)

Re: RoA One Shot Adventures OOC Thread

Hi all,

The game is going great so far.  Just wish I had more time to post!

We have a last PC/player joining us.  The PC will make a breakfast-time appearance at the tavern and his player should post here to say "hi" soon.

I'll get your sheets into the game so you have access to them shortly.

Thanks!

That's pretty much it.

Lyle dallied in talking with the kids and that allowed time for the new PC (Kalmir) to hit the scene.

Now you're all at or near the hunter's hut (for ease of things).

Daimon was there before Kalmir and Lyle got there.

Re: RoA One Shot Adventures OOC Thread

HOW I DO INITIATIVE

Now that it seems like combat may break out, let me explain how I run initiative.

I make the rolls, first for the PC party, second for the NPCs/Creatures.

I average all initiative modifiers (thus high Dex. scores and various skills and feats which allow modifiers to initiative) in those rolls.

The side that gets the higest result goes first, followed by the side the lost.

It's just easier that way.

I will either be unable to post over the next 5 or so days, or I will, depending. Having trouble with the net, will hopefully get to the bottom of it in the next few hours, or have to wait 5 days, Christmas and all. I'll edit this if I get it working, if not, just NPC me if needed. Then again, even if I do get it working, it will be Christmas, so I might not have time to post anyhow, but I doubt I'd be the only one in that boat.

[Private to DM Mike: DM Mike, if you want to take the combat, I'm gonna hold off my action til I can get a sneak attack from above with both the good daggers...if its looking like I'm not gonna get the chance for that then put the good ones away and start raining daggers from above. ]

Not sure when you last post was, but in a nut shell...

We took the map from the woodsmans hut, followed it to the X's marked.  At one of them we ran into Cala and her dog Blackie who joined our cause.  After that we ran into the woodsman who we took the map from, the one who lost his lover (the missing ranger) he didn't seem to care one whit that she is missing and just talked to us then left.  After that we found some funky mushrooms and followed them to this area where we found the slimy people that we got into a fight with but they pointed at something then ran off....now we wait to see what they pointed at....I'm placing my money on it being Binky the dimunitive giant of doom...but I've lost coopers on that bet before.

OOC

For Damion

Well from Lyle's short history above, we followed the slimy things to a very boggy, swampy type of place, humid and stinks like... something that smells really bad. The little creatures have tracks going into a hole behind some rocks, and some human tracks (wearing boots) are leaving the hole going in another direction. And we've all just basically jumped into the hole where there is a completely smooth room, not naturally made, with a hall leading out of, which we are about to go through.

The last couple of posts have more details in them, you might want to read them, but that's basically it. Anyone can feel free to add more to expand on what I've already said.

Good idea.  That'd work.

It is about 300 feet from the pole to the exit of this cavern.

Someone strong like Kalmir would have to drive a blade or other item into the stone floor or wall to provide something secure to tie the rope to.

The adventure is done!

Great work, everyone!

There is still more RPing to do, to be sure, and you need to collect your reward.

But here is what I need you to do to help wrap things up easily:

Can someone find the the reward you were promised?

This information should be back in the early posts of the game.  I need to rush around the other regions so often, I lose track of details.

Thanks!  I'll give XPs for this help, as well as adventure wrap-up awards soon.

Great job, all!

Re: OOC

I'm not sure we were offered a reward.

"I don't have any idea what's going on, so can't tell you what you might find if you look, but if you DO look, it's your decision.  We'd appreciate it, and if you can tell us what happened to Kitta in the woods, we'd appreciate that, too."

The Innkeeper told us this, not mentioning any kind of reward as such.

"I'm Mira and I think the woods ARE haunted, even if this doodie-head here doesn't.  And my pa is one of those men thinking of hiring people to look into it.  We...we don't have much money, but if things get taken care of and the ghost is killed...or whatever...then we could give you pies and cookies and furs and stuff."

A little girl told Lyle and Kalmir this, and then left to tell their parents about Lyle and Kalmir.

Other than that, I can't find any mention of a reward.

Re: OOC

I don't think Cala's personality would mesh very well with a dip into wizard, and her charisma isn't high enough for her to be much of a sorcerer.  If I was going to dip her into anything, it'd probably be ranger, just to get some wilderness skills, but I think she's probably going to stay a rogue.  And, multiclassing at this point would make for a pretty weak wizard or sorcerer, I think.  It'd be better to add a new character if we really need a blaster type.

And yes, joining a game and then having the site go down for ten days can't have been a very encouraging first dip.  :(

I plan encounters and adventures around the PCs that I have, so if we do not have an arcane caster, I tend not to give out a lot of magic items that would be of use only to a wizard, sorcerer, or even bard.  Likewise, no challenges that require only the talents of such a PC.

So we're good.

Did you want to go back to the Zundbridge and check things out or adventure within the city of Waterdeep before the snows of winter fall?

Or did you want to do some dungeon crawling down in Undermountain?

OR do you want to skip winter altogether and move out into the environs around Waterdeep for a wilderness/caravan adventure?

Let me know.  I'm up for anything.  You guys are fun to DM for!

Let's wrap up the mystery at the Zundbridge (and there will be some axe-swinging, I can assure you) and then go from there upon a return to the city.

Re: OOC

Day Units:

All PCs have earned 5 day units.

Add these to any you still have.

If you want to do something like buy gear, etc., you can spend day units now, before going off on the Zundbridge adventure.

Prices are as per the PH or DMG.

Let me know if you want something odd.

Magic items are available for sale in some select places, so feel free to buy scrolls, potions, and other items worth up to 500 GPs each.

Anything more than that, and I'll need to know about it.

Take the day units and money off your sheet and add items purchased to the sheet.

Those who use ammunition, buy some new quantities now to take the place of that used.

When you see the group of PCs and the soldiers fighting the thugs, you are about 100 yards away.

That said, DM Mike... I think Calathra, Kalmir, myself, and the new guy will be alright by ourselves.  We seem to be handling this scene rather well.  I'm tankish enough to plink away at the little guys and keep them off everyone's back while Kal does massive damage and Cala sneak attacks from the side.

If anyone has not yet taken their RoA Birthday Gift, send me a PM.

Those who have done so, add the items to your PC's sheet.

We will worry about how your PC got them after this adventure is done.

In effect, they are given to your PC as part of the treasure/reward for this adventure.

Since the items are free, they are not going to take away from the treasure/reward list I was going to create for this adventure, so fear not on that regard.

Re: OOC

Yes, Yugin is leaving.

Am I'm here (for now).

DM DarkChylde will be taking over the region as soon as I get done wrapping things up, so expect faster play with more frequent posting.

My work takes me away from the computer much more than my previous job did, and when I get home, I want to spend time with my family, so I can not find the time to DM on RPoL as often as I did when I started the One-Shot Adventure region up.

Look for a few more posts from me, then DM DarkChylde will take over.

See ya round Mike.  Your mad DMing skills are the reason I brought the character to the region in the first place. :D

As for the treasure.  You guys can split it up however you want.  Nothing in there catches my attention.  But then, unless it teleports me, heals me, moves me faster, or is better weapons and armor (deflection too), It doesn't help me very much.

I hate to go, but my posting rate has slowed so much, I feel it better to get a DM who can keep the region moving at a faster rate of play.

Sorry the treasure didn't have anything for you, Rjak.  I try to pick items that will help the party overall, but I guess this time I came up short a bit.

(We are in Taverns mode, soon, so there is always the chance to buy stuff, and if you can't find it in Waterdeep, it just can't be found!)

Re: OOC

You didn't do bad Mike.  The endurance paste would be effective for me, and so would the swimming gauntlets, but I am already wearing gauntlets of ogre strength, and I think the endurance paste helps Kalmir more then me.

What I need is to make my Mithril Sword magical.

Since it's between adventures, can I dump some of my DMxps into GP and... sell my 1,000gp diamond to come up with enough to purchase some enchantments?

For my sword I'd like to make it magical and maybe corrosive.  For my throwing hammer, I'd like to give it the returning ability, but the sword is more important to me at the moment.

Yes.  Work out the details/costs and let me and/or DM DarkChyklde know what you come up with.  It will also cost some Day Units, but that is no biggie, since you will be gaining some soon.

I'm studying to be a teacher.  I graduate this May, and I've already passed all the exams I need to get my certificate.  Currently I'm student teaching which is where I actually teach a class all day every day for the semester but don't actually get paid to do it.  I'm having a blast with my students, they're learning a lot and having a lot of fun so it's rewarding even though I'm not getting paid to do it.  :)

We have art directors here, they work in all sorts of areas like marketing for newspaper or magazine ads, commercials for radio and T.V., etc.  Basically marketing campaigns and such.  And then, of course, we have art directors who work on making movies and T.V. shows, video games (my personal favorite art directors *giggles*) and some who work on the layouts of magazines and newspapers and all sorts of things.  Is there a particular branch of marketing you're really interested in or something more general?

Kristin -> Heh, I actually wanted to become a teacher, but had a class where we should start our own fictive business from the ground, examining every possible price, license, and such. I realized I really enjoyed working with the commercial aspect of my project (a café placed on pontoons on the water), so I decided to skip it and went on to make a marketing company for entrepreneurs. The thing I really like about marketing is the freedom to be creative, variety in projects and now a day you get to influence almost every aspect from product development to actual commercials.  Sorry no free video games ;P

Re: OOC

Teaching is awesome.  :)  And I'll offer favors in exchange for free video games!  I'm totally addicted.  I play more games than most guys I know.  Anyway...

Sure, I could start a dating service easy.  :p  The beauty of being a 30-year-old college student and mother, I guess.

Hmmm, Damion...if your accent is too Bostonian then that could be why.  I mean, I'd much rather jump in a car and go to a party than jump in a caw and go to a potty.  *giggles*  Still, I'll do just about anything to tabletop again.  I just love playing on tables.  :p  You come down and visit, and I'll take you to my campus.  Oh, and the good news is that there are two other universities in the same town.  Lots of pretty young women round there.  :p

And that is a cool picture.  Can any of you draw me a really nice purple dragonfly?  I want a tattoo of a purple dragonfly so bad.  But I'm afraid of needles, so simple would be better than fancy and, thus, more needle-pokes.  :p

Off to take my middle child to urgent care now, allergic reaction to something.  Likely poison ivy which means I'll have it by tomorrow.  I'm deathly allergic to the stuff and will need a shot for sure if I get it.  :(

See ya'll later...

I guess I'm no ordinary elementary school teacher.  :p  I mean come on, I play DnD, MtG, and violent video games with a vengeance.  *giggles*  My favorite movies are LOtR and 007 flicks and pretty much almost anything action-adventure and such.  I'm totally addicted to baseball (season starts soon!!!  *big grin*), actually like other sports too, and can't get enough of swimming and fishing and stuff.  Maybe that's why all the little boys at school like me so much.  :p

Anyway, I am taken, that is true (not that I'm anywhere near the prize he thinks I am).  And I like my taker very much.  :p

Yeah you guys miss Drillo (and his machine ;), even if it was extremely boring footie.

We have been lucky and have a lot of talent, that really helps + we are probably the nordic nation with the best teams, which means we get to buy a lot of your best talents.

Well, the best norwegian talents tend to dissapear into Europe, though I think there's a few of them in Denmark, too, now. . .  though I can't say that I can think of anyone other than Hangeland right now.

Khidran Naleth:

Heh, if not for our goalie, we would easily have won that match - I think that even I would have stopped the shots Turkey scored on, and that's saying something.  :p

I may take over the region...

Keep watching this thread for updates.

I would need to know a few things:

1.)  Level, race, and class of the current PCs

2.) Location of the party

----------------

And we would be starting a new adventure.  I would try to get ARPs up OR just get going with a simple adventure.

Again, keep watching, and if I am given permission to run this region, I'll be honored to get back into running this region.

Re: OOC

Just to clarify, prospective DM fbaker4 was looking over the One-Shots, considering taking it over, then DM Mike recently decided that he maybe could fit in One-Shots.

So there's a bit of clash I didn't forsee. Sorry. So now: fight! fight!

[Private to prospective DM fbaker4; DM Mike: Sorry about this.

Have you made a choice, fbaker4? I'm sure Mike wouldn't mind passing on One-Shots if its easiest on you, and him too. :)

And I gave you DM access, to get a better look at the PCs.

no no - i'm cool; i don't fight over dming.  If mike wants it, mike takes it.  I posted a note into the pirates area.

[Private to DM Mike: I just wondered, with the time crunch that you have made plain in the 'Back to Basics' game, if you'll fold that to run this.  It's fine if you do, I understand that until RoA can run efficiently, that'll be your focus.  But I do like Cabot, and would hate to see that die just because.  Here's an idea - what if you folded the mixed Back-to-basics game into RoA?  You could award XP aggressively and pretty soon, we'd have PC's that were RoA-strength, and players could move on once we were done?]

A shame about he Turkey match, you could have used the points. I think we had a bit of bad luck (along with stupidity, Nicklas Jensen red card!) in our loss against Spain?!

I must admit I myself mostly follow Juventus and take no particular interest in the national league except for the weekly run through the results.

Yeah, but after the loss to Bosnia before that, I've been pretty sure that our chances of qualifying for the championship are pretty much gone, anyway.

[Private to DM Mike: Hey, Mike, would it be all right by you if I swapped out a feat for Iodaem?  When I was making the sheet, Ability Focus was still being voted on, so I ended up taking another one (Quick Draw) instead.  Since I never got to even make an IC post before DarkChylde left, I was hoping that now that it's been accepted for RoA use, I could swap Quick Draw for Ability Focus (Hexblade's Curse), for an additional +2 to the DC for those?]

Sadly this means I’ll have to end all my gaming activities for now. I have to start working full time till I start school and read up on a lot of stuff so that I am prepared for school, it was part of the reason I got in.

I sincerely apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused. I did not see this coming and if I had I surely wouldn’t have taken on a game and joined few as well.

I have enjoyed the time I’ve had here thus far and was really hoping to make more of it, but I simple cant the way things are right now. Sorry guys ;(

Also, will you be wanting someone to replace Khidran?  I'm perfectly willing to run the game with just four PCs, but a fifth is always handy.

Re: OOC

Okay, I found out what happened with Mike, and he won't be available to close off the game for who-knows-how-long.  So, in light of that, I'll get things set up for the next one-shot.  Two questions first:

1. Is there anything in the current story that really needs taking care of first?  I don't have a clear idea as to what was going on, but I got the impression that things weren't quite wrapped up.  If it ultimately won't matter, then let's just assume that the issues at hand were settled.

2. Do we want to go ahead and try to recruit a skill-monger?  Again, that's up to you guys; if you feel happy with moving on as-is, we'll do so.

Haven't gotten a bite on a trapsmith yet.  I'll let it run through the weekend, then get things moving one way or another.

I haven't gotten any votes yet on which adventure to use.  Take a look at the options here:

I'm going to default to "The Muster of Morach Tor" since it's already set in the Realms and isn't too far away.  If you've got a preference, though, please let me know; if I get a majority asking for one of the others, I'll go with it.

Re: OOC

XP for this week has been posted.

A couple things I'd like to ask you guys.

First, regarding initiative in encounters: has Mike's system of using an average for the group worked out, or would you prefer individual initiatives?  The averaging method is faster, I'll admit, but it means that all your foes will act at the same time.

Second, I've taken everyone's characters and rewritten them using the new stat-block format used in DMG 2, the past couple years of Dungeon Magazine, and pretty much everything WotC has published since.  It's a lot easier to read, and takes up much less space than the standard RoA sheet.

If you're interested, I'll be happy to transfer the format to your character sheet, though I'd be using a few tags (mostly bold) to make it more readable.  Or, I can PM the new look to you and let you decide whether or not to make the switch.  (You might want to retain the current format, as some DMs here are picky about using it.  I prefer readability, and feel the RoA sheet wastes a lot of space.)

I like the system Mike set up, for the time-saving reasons.  Well, it depends - if we need to post in order of initiative, then I hate individual initiatives.  I've seen rounds of combat take over a week of Real Time like that, sometimes closer to two.  If we can post out of initiative order, and then the DM makes a summary post at the end of the round, putting actions in order of initative (I think most DMs I've seen on the site does this - and whenever I don't use Mike's system, it's what I do, as well).

Hm...  I'm not crazy about the new format, honestly, but if you could put it at the bottom of my character sheet area, I'll take a look at it, see if I can get used to it, I guess?

If I used the regular method, I wouldn't require everyone to post in order; I can take the actions stated and adjust them for the changing situation.  I prefer making the updates in combats cover a full round, rather than making several posts over the course of one.  But if you guys prefer the all-at-once method (for which we have one vote), I can use it.

I'll PM you the alternate sheet, let you see how it would appear.

Ditto for Iodaem's thinking.

Here is a thought. For this to work, everyone needs to know the order of initiative. Everyone puts what they are going to do (out of order). After you see what everyone in front of you is going to do, then you can repost if you decide to readjust, because someone's actions (of those who act before you) requires you to adjust your action. Does this make sense to everyone? Is this what is always done anyway on RoA?

And please PM me the new character details sheet. Thx.

That's pretty much how I've done it with other games; I always start encounters with a list of the initiative order, and usually include a map of the area.  I allow people to edit or repost in response to someone who is going before them, or to coordinate a group action (like delaying to achieve flanking).  Once everyone's posted, I play the round through.

We get a three-day weekend.  And even better, my son's birthday is on Labor Day (the third).  So we get to celebrate that too!  He was actually born on Labor Day Monday six years ago, eight days before 9/11 happened.  We were still in the hospital (he was born premature and we were both really sick), and I cannot tell you how frightening it was to not know what was happening and to be way up high in a hospital, especially being so close to an army base.

Re: OOC

Chepzur:
I understand about that too. Hope your dog stays healthy and lives a long time. My dad and stepmom have a 21 year old cat that won't give up. But she's a rarity. Will you be getting another cat?

Otherwise, I am excited about a four day weekend for Labor Day. Anyone else getting a three or four day weekend?

We have one right now but we think he's pretty lonely. We are thinking about getting another. My wife doesn't like to have just one at a time, she's crazy like that. Yeah, I get monday off then I took next friday off. HOORAY FOR A SUPER SHORT WEEK!!!

Authiel Hannasiel:
We get a three-day weekend.  And even better, my son's birthday is on Labor Day (the third).  So we get to celebrate that too!  He was actually born on Labor Day Monday six years ago, eight days before 9/11 happened.  We were still in the hospital (he was born premature and we were both really sick), and I cannot tell you how frightening it was to not know what was happening and to be way up high in a hospital, especially being so close to an army base.

EEK! That must have been scary. Alls well that ends well though. I wish him a fun and happy birthday :)

none. This is the only one. And I'm not doing much playing in it. :/

I am watching Bleach on the side. And college classes online. But, no other games. That's why I was kind of restless earlier about the gaming, but I understand. I'm still around, even without the gaming...I said I would be. So, it's okay; I'll play as long as you guys are here.

Uhm. . .  a whole heck of a lot.  :p  I might just be the one with the most PCs around RoA (well, Authiel might have me beat by one, I think), heh. . .  DMing two regions here, Amn right here in RoA 4, and Tethyr in RoA 2.

I understand exactly what you mean Damion. It is a good thing we haven't been doing this one too much, because I have had SOOO much going on. From online school to getting prepared to move on from my current occupation. I am still working on options right now.

Has anyone ever played a paladin? That is one I have never played yet. What do you guys think of this class?

Re: OOC

ICK! Paladins. I don't have it in my to play completely straight and narrow. I'm sure they aren't always that way but I prefer a character with a bit more moral leeway. Damion is tough enough being a priest of good and all.

Re: OOC

Paladins are a whole barrel of fun.  Even the straight class right off the page is a good solid class that can be a real pleasure to play.  I look to my favorute part in the BoED when playing my Paladins - What is good?

Every action must be judged, and I normally treat it like the God itself is watching the character make the choice.  If it fails to uphold the Gods principles, then it fails and the God retracts their power from them.  If they suceed they retain their abilities and get a bit of a fleeting divine smile.

Re: OOC

Sorry, no luck in finding a DM to take over, after all.  There is, however, a new region starting up soon, where the DM have agreed to take on transfers from here before advertising for new ones.  So, for those of you who are thinking about leaving, DM Raconteur will be starting his Lantan-region soon.  I'll post more information here as soon as possible, or you can PM him in the OOC area, if you'd like.

[Private to Damion Forrester:  I think DM Jim is looking for a cleric in his Sembia-region, so you might also want to check that one out.]

I'm as of yet undecided on if I'll be moving Iodaem or not - Lantan is one of those areas that I have next to no knowledge about, heh.  :p
