Whatever Happened to Space Pirates (Browser Game)

Back, maybe 5-10 years ago there was a browser game about space pirating. You had to recruit your crew (and there were all sorts of different kinds like pilots that imporved your manuevering or marines/buccaneers to use when boarding ships). The overall plot was that there was an oppressive Empire against a group of upstart Rebels and you decided to become a pirate one day.

Combat was turn based and you could either attack, defend, approach, demand surrender or retreat.

The goal was to take the ship intact so you couldn't just attack (and in fact if you had a powerful ship you might blow up the smaller freighters in a single salvo). Instead you needed to damage them a bit and then demand they surrender OR approach and board their ship (you had to approach, then grapple, then board) and then you would fight their crew, again turn based with options of "attack" or "withdraw". Once their crew was dead you could steal the cargo and be off.

You could also do things like land on a planet and try and steal cargo from a warehouse. You could accept missions like take passengers to planet X or take cargo to plaent Y. You also had to pay taxes on credits you earned from selling cargo etc. or else you might eventually run into the fearsome IRS organization.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. There was a pay option to unlock the best ships and weapons but otherwise it was fun and free. I tried searching it on google but all that came up was:

Pirate Galaxy - not it
Star Pirates - not it
Space Pirate - tower defense game, definitely not it.

Re: Whatever Happened to Space Pirates (Browser Game)

Sounds like you are describing a variation of what I call a "Taipan" game. It's not the same as what you're describing, but have you tried Taipan 3000? You can play it from the link below:

I know this is like 9 months old but I've been looking for that space pirates game too. It looks like the website is now under construction so either the owner sold the website for probably big bucks or he is re-opening the game :) (fingers crossed)

It was a great game I spent hours on it everyday.

I know I'm late to the party, but I created an account just to say thank you! Even though it doesn't work, I'm able to confirm that I'm not crazy and the site didn't just disappear off the face of the earth!

I would love to remake this game or at least something heavily inspired by it if anybody would be interested as well.

Re: Whatever Happened to Space Pirates (Browser Game)

the developers were unable to continue supporting the game and the coding apparently was obsolete. I've sent emails and I know others have over the years inquiring about purchasing rights to be game, to no response. I mean, this game came out before pentium 1's. Ideally, someone could make some cash if they turned that thing into an app. I'm sure metropolis or whomever it is now forgot about all that stuff.

Re: Whatever Happened to Space Pirates (Browser Game)

Hello, I'm Gary, the creator of that Space Pirate browser game from way back in 1997.

So the history goes like this: I created Space Pirate (v1) back in 1996 using Macromedia Shockwave. At the time, it was fairly unique to have interactive media on a web page. In fact, the only ways you could do it were to use Shockwave or Java. And Java was so slow and difficult to use back then that Shockwave was pretty much it. So I had a field day creating all sorts of games (solitaire, crosswords, golf, etc) and got a lot of attention for it. Space Pirate was by far the most complex of those games.

In 1997 I decided to improve Space Pirate. I started from scratch and created a much more advanced version (v2). Most people that remember Space Pirate are thinking about v2. A company pretty quickly approached me and offered to buy it. With the money I put a downpayment on a house and seeded the small company that I run to this day. A real success story.

After my non-compete agreement ended, I decided to make another game like Space Pirate, but needed to use a different name. In 2003 I released Rebel Dawn. This was even more advanced than SPv2 and had some real-time player interaction. But by 2003 we already had some 3D games like this with big budgets, so it didn't get as much attention. After a few years of moderate success, I had to shut it down as it cost a bit month-to-month to run.

But the story doesn't end there. I kept thinking about this kind of game and it was only a matter of time before I did another one. Now instead of web-based browser games, I make apps. So it seemed natural to do an iPad app. I spent the last few months working on it, fueled by encouragement from some old Space Pirate fans (including this very thread!). The new game is called Starship Captain: Adventure in Alpha Sector and it is in the iTunes app store right now. It is free to get started, so try it and let me know how you like it and how it compares to your memory of Space Pirate. Here's a shortcut link: http://goo.gl/tm9x3Z

I also have to say how awesome it is that the designer of the game just popped in here and talked about it.

@rosenz

Wow! My friend and I used to really enjoy this game back in the day. Is there any way in which the v2 you describe could be played in the modern era? I bet there are many of us who would love to give it a spin once more!

Re: Whatever Happened to Space Pirates (Browser Game)

In reply to rosenz (msg # 13):

Your game was the first thing that I hacked, along with my brother. We were probably ages 8 and 10. There was a high score list of 5 names, one of the names was assman. My brother and I, who did not have a credit card and had exhausted the demo version, set about attempting to guess assman's password. I figured a guy named assman wouldn't have put much thought in a password. After trying a few passwords, my brother suggests try 1234. I was like there is no way that would work, he said just try it. 1 2 3 4. Login successful.

To assman: Sorry for getting you all the best strudel and tons of cash. My brother and I played the hell out of your account.
