Re: Vents with allowed responses - 3
(Apologies for the double post)

I'm starting to feel like my time here is nearly done.   While tabletop has often been the only means of positive socialization; I'm been sensing lately that I've done all that I can (or are supposed to) here.   While I'm (still) doing surprising well, given my issues (specially Bipolar Depression and Asperger's) are slowly getting to the point of acting up with increasing frequency.

And while that's partially a vent; it's also a thank you for all the players, GMs, and staff that are here.  Take care everyone.   ^_^

Technical questions
Why do the people that wants to pay for your very specialised, technical, professional services come to you asking to sign off directly to the conclusions that they made in their mind, instead of telling you want the problem is and asking what is the best technical solution for it?!?

You pay a lot of money and I'm here to solve your technical issue the best possible way, not to rubber stamp the (typically wrong, of course) solution that you thought up while daydreaming!!! Let me do my job!!!
This way I spend more time showing you that your "technical" solution was wrong than actually solving the problem the best possible way (that is actually what you're supposed to pay for)...

I’m also Autistic with an addictive personality. I found , a while ago, I was doing too much rpol and neglecting real life so I took a hiatus for a few years. I can back last year during the first lockdown but committed not to overstretch myself. I am being quite disciplined and it is working.

So my message really is that you don’t have to make any lifelong decision regarding how and where you play. Take a break, explore other options and see where it takes you. Rpol will be here, should you choose to return.

As a side note, my spellchecker defaults rpol  to fool. :)

I liked this post ↑, and can identify with a lot of it.

I've taken a similar approach, as of August 2020.

Hopefully Hunter can find a way to recharge, and feel enriched. Maybe we'll see them back. I hope. :)

In reply to Yaztromo (msg # 1938):

I can see how that would be irritating. I worked in a different sort of job, but the level of frustration became similar I imagine, as in order to save money the people in charge pushed the staff so hard they couldn't do the job correctly anymore, and a lot of people suffered. I fought them, and continued to do the job correctly. They hated me, but it is hard to fire a person for doing their job right. I was just about the one in the office though that did, eventually I had to take early retirement. The stress was killing me.

In reply to Piestar (msg # 1941):

I've run into this myself, on more than one occasion.  This typically happens when support (tech/product/etc) is outsourced; and the contracting company is being payed on a per-call basis.   I worked for one contract where the condition was: "Solve in 30 seconds or less; and if it couldn't be then escalate to tier 2 for callback".  So yes, I understand your pain.

Minor gripe, but frustrating. I ate my food, forgot I ate it, went looking for it, got angry, searched for where the container was, found the remanants, suspected my roommate ate my food, went to talk to her, remembered I was still hungry, ate the remanants at the table and saw my drink I had with the meal the first time. That I got sad. I was looking forward to the fried chicken, but I was so hungry the first time I just ate it without tasting it. I0 so seldom order out anymore, and love fried chicken, and especially from this place. I am so mad I zoned out. Hunger is a trigger for me, so, eh...it could have been worse. Gotta let it go. Just ticked off, because it was supposed to be a treat.

Yeah. :/ It does actually. *nods* :)

I ended up eating some lox and cream cheese I still had, and that was really good too. So I still got to enjoy a treat, even if it wasn't what I intended.

Isn't it funny how you Think you would like a particular type of game and you look all over for it. At some point you find one that does just what you think you would enjoy and yet it just doesn't spark that JOY you expected?

Even worse when you find a "New Game" and are super excited, then you realize you already played one just like it, only with a slightly different spin. The spin wasn't the problem the expectations were.

I suspect that I am not alone in this. Rather frustrating.
Very hard to find what you want when you only think you know what it is.

I suspect it might be the sharing of the thing more than the thing itself.

Do details no longer matter?
Why is it that players seem allergic to actually abiding by the setting information presented when the GM sets up a scene? (I don't mean game-mechanic-canon information, but the actual setting-the-scene descriptions themselves.)

Is it that people are just so excited to see a new scene start, that they read so fast they don't pay attention to the details?
Is it because they don't care, and figure the details don't actually matter, so they can make up whatever they want?
Is it because they're self-centered and figure that whatever they want to do with the scene should work, even if it contradicts the GM's setting?
Is it because they're used to GMs that don't bother with the details, so they assume details never make a difference?

I'm talking things like...declaring that it's day, when the GM described it being night, or deciding you're riding in a cart instead of on foot, or rolling up to a dinner scene that's been thoroughly described as vegetarian and deciding that you can pick up a bacon double cheeseburger off the buffet...those sorts of things.

Am I just expecting too much? Am I product of old-school GMs that put details in purposefully and would screw you in a /heartbeat/ for not paying attention to them, and that just makes me old and out of the loop now? Does no one care any more?

Am I the only person that assumes that if a detail is mentioned (or /not/ mentioned) by a GM, there's a reason for it and it should be respected?

In reply to SunRuanEr (msg # 1948):

Yes, annoying that you go to the effort set a scene, often carefully, and it is "All About Them".

If you enforce sticking to the details that have been posted by you or others, they will just ignore or drop from the game.

I wonder how many games collapse from that?

Do details no longer matter?
In reply to SunRuanEr (msg # 1948):

That does sound quite frustrating, and would certainly make me less willing to continue GMing those individuals. Without seeing the context and the game you were playing, I don't want to cast too many aspertions about, but it ultimately comes down to them understanding the reason there's a GM in the first place.

Given the examples you've given, I tend to use the rule of thumb when GMing of 'don't put anything in the description which you aren't willing to argue the toss about' - so, unless there's a plot reason for them to be on foot, or that the buffet is vegetarian, I'm happy to leave it up to their imaginations and just run with it.

If it's important, I'll post it, and they need to recognise that and work around it - if it's a problem, then they're welcome to ask me about it and whether it can be changed if it really doesn't work for them, but ultimately if it's important to the scene, it's their job as a player to respect what's put in front of them.

In terms of expectations and old-school GMs, I don't think you're expecting too much - ultimately, you're doing your players a favour by GMing, and if they wish to substitute their own reality, then they can take over and free you from the stress of doing that job. It shouldn't be, as GT states, 'All About Them' - RPing is supposed to be collaborative and enjoyable for all parties, and if it's not, then don't do it.

That being said, I also wouldn't want to be in a situation where we exist in a world where we still have a lot of those 'I will screw you in a heartbeat if you don't pay attention' - sometimes players make honest mistakes, and especially with RPOL, sometimes you're posting while rushing because you don't want to hold the game up and you'll get the wrong end of the stick.

I also don't think it's a solely generational issue - there's a lot of good young players who I've worked with who are sticklers for detail, and a lot of older ones who feel they can ride roughshod over a GM!

The double bacon cheese burger in the vegan meal just hits me. I see the character is either daydreaming about it, or is delusional. Either works for that. I can have all kinds of fun with people who ignore the scene settings, including they have gone insane but don't realize it. Everything they have done is just in their heads and not reality.

To be fair, I did that before once in a Mage game I GM'd, where either myself or the player wasn't paying attention to what I'd originally said was in their coffee cup, and I kept on changing it in every post until they noticed. The fun thing is that, given the context, neither of us was willing admit outright whether it was just a flub or outside interference by a nefarious third party.

Do details no longer matter?
I been ordering from door dash lately. The service is fine its just I get breakfast from MC Ds and the one they use is full of idiots.
Take this morning, ordered cream and sugar, 2 Large coffees, and a chicken bisquet, got the bisquet, got two coffees, medium but the lid was not put on one right, so most of its coffee is in bottom of bag, also both were ice cold, so no telling how long those were sitting outside. Got no cream or sugar.
Not getting the cream or sugar is something that happens allot, or I get some random stuff I did not order, like salt and splenda.
I tried to call the store when they Really fouled up my order the other day, (got an Empty box that was supposed to have my chicken bisquet in it) but no one there will answer the phone.

I can't drive right now, my foot is injured, otherwise I would go over there and give them a piece of my mind and maybe the messed up bag of coffee.

Next time it happens, don't go to the store direct.  Report it through Doordash.  Take a pic with your phone in case they need it.  Had things like this happen a time or two, they'll usually credit you the missing and/or damaged items.  Least they have for me.  Both the app and the website have an option to do so (can't remember what it lists as off the top of my head).

Yeah, I feel ya - it's why when I order from a place I know and love that, when the order is wrong, I just go all 'feelsbadman' and pout.  Then try again next time.  Sometimes being a creature of habit is horrible.

This never ceases to amaze me.  Players ghost a game for weeks and a scenario they should have been active in ends.  Suddenly they appear, don’t read around threads but make a post as if they’re in the middle of the action when the storyline has ended but they think it stopped to wait for them to return which it did for a week or so.  People don’t pay attention, like I tell all, read from your last post down to the last post in the thread before you post so you don’t miss any reactions.  Come on read the PMs and OOC, Player discussion threads etc too.  To live a game must move on even if they are a slow paced game!  To live a game must have active players!  Have some consideration of you fellow players!
