Trying a new sleeping med today after work. One of the warnings: “may cause drowsiness.”

Well yeah…that’s kind of the point.

So...I finally broke down and bought a (relatively cheap) Windows 11 computer.   And OMG! so much bloatware and spyware to uninstall...

Windows 11, the Windows ME of the 21st century. I keep getting update notifications that tell me my older model Windows 10 computer is not compatible with Windows 11 and then it gives me a list of things to do to make it compatible (top of the list is get a new computer as my present one, which works fine, was New when Windows 10 came out.)
My few experiences with Windows 11 makes me Never want to get that system. Mostly as its little more than a machine to bury you in Ads and make you pay for Everything, its like EA took over their marketing department.

I solved that by only having Linux on my machine.

And I play just fine on it too.

I'm finding Windows 11 so shockingly bad that I'm going to end up switching to Linux.  Not only could I not even USE the machine without a "Microsoft ID" but some of the "features" aren't removable by the user.   And the price of an external recovery media is over a hundred dollars.

So, I'm going to switch now and deal with the recovery media later.   Yup, another dissatisfied Former windows customer.

Did you do some deep searching to find out how to get around that? There's always been a way before, although it has admittedly required a *LOT* of hoops to be jumped through, so I'd expect there's a way for Win11 as well. I've been running Windows machines for...always, and have never had a Microsoft account, nor do I intend to acquire one.

/goes to do some digging

edit: Found some immediate hits on a quick search for 'How do I bypass account setup in Windows 11?' (I'd link, but I'm not sure that's allowed in here, but I'm confident you can find them if you want to. I'd suggest the ghacks article method #1, if I were doing it. :D)

RAGE.

My eldest child (who is well into being a legal adult but not into the 'Responsible Adult' stage) has a Mini Cooper that's been in the shop for thousands of dollars of repairs about every six months, because - you know - it's a Mini Cooper. So what did they do today, while taking it (yet again) to the dealership for repairs?

That's right, they decided that they enjoyed the experience of dropping thousands of dollars (that aren't spare) every few months so much that they bought a brand new Mini Cooper (0 Down, so no price mitigation at all) in order to get to extend the experience!

/sigh

We hope that the new one has fewer problems than the last one. I am sure there are some out there that don't breakdown that often.

… so much that they bought a brand new Mini Cooper …

A small silver lining that can be had here is that make and model can be incredibly safe in a wreck.  For such a small vehicle they are actually pretty beefy.

My daughter totaled her Mini Cooper a while back.  Air bags went off, whole front end crumpled, etc.

Three vehicles were totaled after the crash, but she walked away uninjured.

So our dishwasher broke down. Not happy. Even worse is that there's seven people who are living in our house and we have to hand wash every dish.

I had a water shutoff valve in a bathroom break last month. Had to shut off water to the entire house until I could get it fixed.

Current problem: gas oven refuses to light properly meaning I can't bake or broil anything. Stovetop works though.

Yay home ownership.

This is the reason I moved from where I lived to live with my cousin. Four incomes in one house means we can take care of everything.

I'm with you there.  I owned houses from 1986 to 2017 -- three different houses and sometimes owning two when we moved but still hadn't sold the one we moved away from.  Of those, only one represented a significant profit when we sold it, and that house we had while our kids were in college, so we had already refinanced our newfound equity out of it.  The others we sold for the same or less than the money we paid for it and put into it in improvements.  (I'm not counting upkeep, just real improvements.)

The myth that renting is a waste of money comes from my parent's generation, the WWII vets, who only saw housing prices go up and up.  After selling my third house in 2017, I worked out everything we spent on home ownership, including taking the tax breaks into account (but also paying for yard work, maintenance, and all the stuff I no longer pay for now that I'm a renter), and compared that to if I had just rented the entire time and invested all my down payments.  The difference is well within my margin of error, which means it was basically a wash financially.  When I add the cost of all the stress of owning, buying, and especially selling the houses, renting is the clear winner.

It is a great approach, if you all get along.  Do make sure, though, that you have an exit strategy that includes a legal agreement on who owns what.  I've seen great friendships break up over such things.  If you buy an antique side table that looks so great in the living room, be clear that it is you buying it with money over and above what you contribute to house maintenance, and therefore belongs to you when you leave.

When the person whose name is actually on the deed asks you all to contribute to the new roof, that's reasonable; that is maintenance.  When they ask you to contribute to adding a new garage, that is not, since it will increase the value of the house (probably by more than it costs), and they'll get it back when they sell the house.
