Has Anyone Played This Game

I just came across an old old game titled 'Above the Earth'

http://innocence.com/games/above-the-earth.pdf

It is so simple it is actually wierd.

It is a super heroes game, but could be used in almost any setting.

No stats, powers, edges, or anything.

Your character has to describe themselves and what kind of powers they have.

The book doesn't have limits and players can gain powers during the game (they point out that it is bad form to suddenly grab a power that fits a specific moment, but doesn't rule it out either.'

so if the players can have any powers, how does the system work?  Glad you asked.

There are several stories that make up a scene.

Each player has 100 D6s and that is it.  No more

Actions like speaking to contacts, investigating clues, changing plots (yes, sometimes the players can actually change portions of the STs plot), fighting, defending against villians, fighting their thugs, using powers, and even boosting their powers all take up dice.

Each heroic action (so brushing teeth isn't going to take dice away) costs dice. The DM chooses a difficulty by described by how many dice are needed.  'You will need 5D6 to catch up to the flash.  The needed results of that roll is 5(dice) x 3 (average of most dice rolls are 3-5).  Sometimes the DM doesn't need to tell players how many dice and just say it is really hard and allow the players to decide how many they are going to use.  There is no limit so DMs could require 20D6 for a really bad villian and just say 'really hard.'

Players want to match or beat (equal or higher) to the Difficulty (20 dice x 3=difficulty 60)

Now 1s are special. they are bad for reaching your goal, but so bad that the writer felt guilty and made a rule that allows the player to put 1st back into his/her pot of total dice.

Once the player has used 100 dice in a scene, they can no longer help the party in capturing the villian.  For whatever reason, they're out.

Huh. An interesting concept. Sounds like it has potential, though I'm not entirely sure how well the 100 d6 system would do on PBP.

It should work out well enough:  the dice roller has a log that can be used to track how many dice a player has rolled.  Might be a little work for the GM, though.
