A great actor, probably best known to gamers as Ash in Alien and Bilbo Baggins (the older one) in the LOTR and Hobbit films.

Very sad news indeed.

I think that that is my favourite version of LotR, though all of them are great, and his performances were always fantastic.

He had a good run, 88 is not a bad age to live to. Celebrating his life is more important than morning his death.

A brilliant actor, with a huge body of work as his legacy.  111 would have been a good age to go, but 88 is nothing to scoff at.  One of those actors whose work I always enjoyed...

And let's not forget the massive volume of stage work that he did, as well.  Granted, few of us ever got, much less took, the opportunity to see him on stage, but he had an extensive resume outside the film world.

Oh that's so sad.  He was such a brilliant actor and did such amazing character work.  I was always impressed with the scope of his characterization and the layering he was able to achieve.  He was truly a brilliant man.  The world is lesser without him.

I really liked him as the priest in The Fifth Element.  Stowing away on the ship to Floston Paradise.....

A wonderful tribute by Peter Jackson.  I'm not ashamed to say that I was weeping by the end.

Ah. I see that now. The initial reports I saw said he had been battling prostate cancer. Wikipedia hadn't been updated yet so I took a guess...
