You noted where I said I'm American? Even our "natives" are descended from colonists. And we are all victims of the British empire, one way or another That's why we are independent now. Hell, that's why the second batch of us came here. Dude, learn some history. Go away until then.

Moderator: could I respectfully ask you to delete this thread celebrating a colonialist? EDIT: I accept that is had been my mistake to engage in discussion here instead of requesting this in the first place. My bad, I apologise for that. Please either ignore the thread or respect other people's sorrow in the passing of another human being.

And that says it all. They very thing you're complaining about in your country (the fact that it knows better than everyone else and is willing to impose that belief) is the very thing you seem so proud of in yourself. And that's another lesson that went over your head, I'll bet. Yeesh. Go away. This message was last edited by the user at 21:34, Thu 08 Sept 2022.

That's disappointing. I'll abide by this, but I respectfully suggest you and your fellow moderators might want to give some thought to some sort of policy regulating this sort of post. To just say "no polítics please" when a post is virtually an endorsement of a political figure, and one totally complicit in colonialism, seems disingenuous, since the OP is political in the first place. It's like writing Putin's eulogy in rosy terms here and then chiding commenters for mentioning his crimes. Thank you.

Politics, and the bashing of other individuals, is not permitted on the public boards here. I've asked nicely -- please be respectful of RPoL's public forums rules.

Strangely, Philip's death hit me much harder, but I guess that's because I've been expecting Elizabeth to join him for a while now? Maybe. Either way, it's a terrible loss for the world, to lose such a shiningly devoted, classy lady. To say she was the last of her kind, would not be an untruth, I don't think.

I personally feel that no-one's born better than anyone else, but that the Monarchy serves a vital function by providing a figure with which to embody our national pride while freeing us to accept the universal truth that our politicians are a bunch of inbred criminal incompetents who shouldn't be trusted to handle the lunch money, let alone the national budget. Having someone to whom the chief executive has to go, cap-in-hand and report to on a weekly basis doesn't hurt either. Elizabeth served in that role for literal generations, pampered yes but also keenly aware of her duty (bear in mind that this woman learned to drive behind the wheel of an ambulance while London was being bombed) and despite the many things which can be said about British Hegemony, she exemplified most of our best qualities and we shall not see her like again. RIP.

Many of the tributes that have been made speak of her being a constant in a world of change...that is how I feel today...a constant has disappeared. And I will freely admit to having shed some tears while watching the news. May she rest in peace after a life of service.

Saddened to hear of this loss. A remarkable woman. Even though I no longer tread the shores of my homeland, she was the Queen.

It is a bit paradoxical that it is both a surprise and completely not a surprise. Much fuss has been made over the past few years about how old she was, how long she had reigned, what events she had led through, etc etc...so it was almost impossible to not know of her extremely advanced years, and I've had enough loved ones die that I'm all too aware of what follows extreme age. But her image has also been carefully maintained through the half-century and change that I've been alive...even though we saw she was getting older, we never saw any sign that age was taking its toll on her...she always appeared capable, in full possession of her faculties, and ready to handle whatever crisis the world threw her way. The thought that she would someday pass on and be replaced was almost always followed by the thought, "Yeah, maybe...but not anytime soon, that's for sure..."

Once Philip died, I expected her to go too. He was a part of her life from the time she became a teenager, and I'm sure he was a great support for her, even after he retired. She did carry on though, she accepted Boris Johnson's retirement and did other official duties, though she did slow down and have other members of the RF take over some. But on the whole she did what she swore to do, reigned until she died.
