Re: This thread

In reply to Kagura (msg # 748):

That explanation is logical in retrospect, but we didn't know any of that going into the show. At least, I didn't know it. Imagine watching three Spider-Man movies, but Peter Parker doesn't gain any superpowers until the third film. Imagine watching a detective show, but a crime doesn't occur to be investigated until the third episode. A first act is important in storytelling, but I thought the scripts too way too long to establish the concept the of the show. That needs to be established in the first episode if not half-way through the first episode. If I were to have watched the pilot episode, stopped, and written a review then -- the way most tv critics would do -- I would have had little idea what the heck I just watched.

Re: This thread

In reply to ChupaBob (msg # 749):

Here's a quote from an interview with J. Michael Straczynski related to the discussion we were having a couple of months ago:

“We’re trying to change the definition of science fiction, how it’s perceived on television,” says Straczynski. “We’re not trying to do a show about the gadget, the gimmick, the mission, the job. It’s about these characters and their journey.”

Re: This thread

Hmm, I had not noticed that detail about the perspectives. I mean how the point of view never leaves one of the sensates after the first episode.

Re: This thread

I just finished watching Fear of the Walking Dead.  I was not a fan.  Very slow pacing, uninteresting characters, and the plot didn't make any sense.  Hopefully the next season of the regular show steps things up.

Re: This thread

I'll get around to watching it eventually... It's not on the top of my to-do list though.

That being said, I love the new BB-9 droid :)

I'll resist the urge to exploit my GM powers to edit your post.

Maybe BB-9 will be in the next movie.

Strong story, but I am not pleased with how they seem to have Nerfed the Diamonds so soon after Change Your Mind.

Re: This thread

Just got got caught up on critical role in the last few days after binging for a couple months
from beginning to end (I assume it was that long, most that time is lost to me), I love it so much! It took a while to do, but feels 100% worth it! Now the show goes on hiatus, of course! Big unlucky energy :|

Critical Role?  What is it?  I could look it up, but I'd rather hear a description from a fan

Re: This thread

It's a DND show, some would say it's 'the' DND show.

A cast of talented voice actors play every thursday (except when they don't). Awesome DM.

I could go on for a really long time, but that's because the show is really long (840+ hours)

They are on hiatus because of the pandemic right now, so it's a better time than ever to start.

Some fans would recommend starting with the second campaign (the first campaign continued a home game with 9th level characters and a disliked cast member who got kicked off after 26/27 episodes). But i would never recommend part skipping!

It's all on youtube, they have a channel

---

I'd say more but I'm hesitant because the plot's so good

Re: This thread

I never got into star trek, but I liked star wars when I was younger.

I don't know how big of a fan you are, but out of interest what would you consider the best piece of content: ie best season/ best series/ best movie?

Re: This thread

Best season / series / movie of Star Trek?

This is completely subjective, but I'd have to go:

Season 4 of Star Trek: The Next Generation - This is where the show really found itself

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The first Star Trek to have a compelling series long story ark.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - It felt like an episode of the original Star Trek, but elevated to epic heights

Re: This thread

In reply to FourLegged (msg # 768):

I have to say that the series that, after all, thrilled me most was the original series: the feeling that the galaxy is so big, unexplored and we can expect anything is very strong there. Following series may be perhaps scripted better, but (usually) have more knowledge of the galaxy and of the kind of stuff, races, etc. that you may find there, reducing the sense of wonder.
