Re: Riddle Me This XIII

I think the answer is obvious to everyone as "time," so I'll break it down:

My third may be charmed, [third time's a charm]
Borrowed for living yet never returned, [living on borrowed time]
And ripe without rotting, [the time is ripe]
With interest that's earned. [especially compounded over time]
You may pass me, [pass time]
But I fly without wings, [time flies...when you're having fun]
And you may keep me or kill me, [keep time or kill time]
But I exist for all things.

Brought from the mine,
And held to the sun,
Drops of frozen red wine,
From Hell's deep vats o'errun.

No. Good guess, but blood does not come from a mine...

Re: Riddle Me This XIII

Ruby is correct!

If you copy and paste the riddle in a search engine, you will see that I modified a real poem to make the riddle.

Re: Riddle Me This XIII

I had thought of doing that but worried it might be cheating, so I refrained

I did it just now though and didn't find a poem :(

I'll double post a new riddle if I think of one, i suppose.

Re: Riddle Me This XIII

Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem called "Rubies" goes like this:

THEY brought me rubies from the mine,
And held them to the sun;
I said, they are drops of frozen wine
From Eden's vats that run.

I looked again,--I thought them hearts
Of friends to friends unknown;
Tides that should warm each neighboring life
Are locked in sparkling stone.

But fire to thaw that ruddy snow,
To break enchanted ice,
And give love's scarlet tides to flow,--
When shall that sun arise?

Four fingers have I,
And a thumb that's all too grand;
But though I can point and clench a fist,
I do not have a hand.

Koalas have two thumbs on each hand, for a total of four! That would have made a great riddle.
