"Oh most certainly.  The Belladonna cannot be more than a couple hours' stroll from the city and I do carry the finest rope but if you depart upon the eastern bank of the river you should have no need of crossing the old bridge.  Everything you seek should be just east of the bridge."  Just then the bell above the door clinked and a towering hulk of a man bustled through the door fleeing the elements.  "Will you be neding the rope then Madaam?"  Horrace said clearing his throat pointedly.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine smiled knowingly at the halfling and bade him a good evening.

"Actually, I sink I will leave ze rope as I believe I 'ave everyzing I need now.  Good evening to you Monsieur 'orrace."

The young woman turned and exited the shop, leaving the tinkling door chime and the slightly more well-off halfling behind her.  A nervous excitement washed over Antoine as she made her way back to the Red Rose Inn.  Surely, the next couple of days would be important and could have many different outcomes, some perhaps unforeseen by the young woman.  Still, with plenty to think about, Antoine returned to the inn, locked herself in her room and decided to get a good night's sleep so she was well-rested and ready for an early start tomorrow.

Morning
Stormy

The relentless thunder and lightning throughout the night made for a fitful rest and so when the other Guardians began to stir Antoine gave up on any more slepp and rose from her bed to face the new day.  Rain still fell in sheets outside the window as the slow-moving summer storm had yet to pass through.  By the time Antoine had washed and clothed herself the other Guardians had already gone their separate ways leaving Antione to pursue her intrigues alone.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
After a less than perfect night's sleep due to the weather, Antoine rose from her bed weiry-eyed.  Sitting on the edge, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes and gathered her thoughts to what lie in the day ahead of her.  After a quick wash and feeling more refreshed because of it, Antoine began to don her leather armour, all the while thinking whether she was being foolish for what she intended to do today.

Passing the door to her fellow companions room, it seemed that despite the early hour, they too had set off as soon as possible.  Given the awful conditions outside, her thoughts turned to Dorn and Serol who's journeys were the longest.  Antoine then moved downstairs and after a light breakfast, hoisted her pack up on her back and set off southwards from town, making sure to be on the eastern side of the river as Horrace had advised.

Late Morning
Raining

It was still raining when the bridge of which Horrace had spoken came into view and indeed it was in disrepair.  One side of the bridge had collapsed into the water entirely, the other was missing several crossplanks making for atreacherous platform to say the least.

The rain had long since soaked your clothes and sapped your desire to remain dry and so you walked, dripping water from heavy, clinging clothes.  "It's not safe to be out here alone." came a voice from behind you so suddenly and unexpectedly that you momentarily froze stock still wondering if you were hearing things.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
The continuing rain would normally have dampened a person's spirit, but not Antoine, not today.  She was determined to reach her intended destination and although she couldn't tell how the day would pan out, she was hoping for a satisfactory conclusion.  What the conclusion might be, remained to be seen.

Trudging through the quiet countryside, the walk would have been very pleasant as the sights were peaceful and the sounds of nature welcoming.  The rainy conditions had somewhat lessened the enjoyment of the journey, however the pitter-patter of rain on the larger-leafed foliage was soothing and there were still some wildlife to be seen hither and thither.

Reaching the bridge of which Horrace had spoken, Antoine sat on a damp, fallen log and took the opportunity to have a light repast.  As she nibbled on some bread and dried fruits, she became aware that the sounds of the wildlife she'd been hearing all morning were very faint, practically inaudible.  Deciding not to dwell on this, Antoine slugged from her waterskin and turned her thoughts to where to head next.  It was whilst she was pondering her next move when she heard the voice behind her.  Turning around to see the source of the "greeting", Antoine simply replied, "Per'aps only if you bring danger wiz you?"

"I've been told that I do." replied the man in kind, his coyness matching your own.  The man was of average height, above average musclature, and below average looks.  His age was difficult to guess with his hair having yet to turn salt and pepper but his beard grew full and ragged.  Over his right shoulder rested an enormous maul whose mallet head bore the scarring of a  thousand blows delivered.  "You best go back to wherever it is you came from girl, these lands aren't safe for travelers."

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine regarded the stranger closely.  In a land where lycanthropes were supposed to roam, how was she to tell when she encountered one unless they were upon her and attempting to rend her from limb to limb?  The danger of being in the area was intangable, yet Antoine felt very strongly that the animosity between the humans and the shapeshifters could not continue.  Despite Herman's firm beliefs that the lycans needed to be wiped from the area totally, Antoine was of the opinion that this made the townsfolk no better than the shapeshifters themselves.

Returning to her senses, Antoine smiled at the stranger.  Whether he was a hunter of lycans or a lycan himself, she felt in no immediate danger although if he was the latter, perhaps this was a friendly warning.

"I understand, yet I feel compelled to be 'ere.  Trouble is again brewing between ze townsfolk and zose zat call zis area 'ome and it is not right.  I 'ope to some'ow diffuse ze situation before any violence ensues.  Do you understand what I am trying to do?"

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
The man dropped the maul from his shoulder letting it's heavy head thump into the ground in front of him before resting both hands upon the end of it's haft.  "It's a fool's errand.  Neither those of Rosewood or the werewolves have any desire to change things.  A balance has been achieved and should be preserved."  The man spoke with little emotion, neither amusement or scorn tainted his even voice and placid face.  "Perhaps the third time is the charm, it is not safe for you to be here and you'd do well to leave."

The maul is made of metal though clearly not silver in nature.  Please include any skill check rolls you wish to employ going forward.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine could still not decipher whether the stranger was a lycan or no, however the fact that he knew of the werewolves, obviously knew the area well yet his weapon was not made of silver might suggest he was a lycanthrope.  Of course, his weapon could be magical in nature but Antoine didn't know whether even enchanted weapons could harm lyncanthropes, [Dammit, where is Darwin when you need him!] she thought to herself.

"I find it 'ard to believe zat boz parties would want to continue ze violence needlessly.  I am sure zat boz sides would prefer to live undisturbed and not 'ave to worry about ze zreat of ze ozer.  Maybe zis is a foolish errand as you suggest but ze next full-moon is upon us and wizout action, blood will certainly be spilt.  Can you 'elp me in some way or at least 'elp me 'elp ze werewolves?"

Antoine then thought for a moment that whatever race this stranger was, he might wonder what she meant when she said 'help the werewolves'.

"When I say about 'elping ze werewolves, let me just say zat I 'ave only 'eard ze 'uman's side of ze story so far and it doesn't paint a very good picture of ze lycans.  I would like to 'ear ze ozer side's view and zen see if I can 'elp in any way."

"You speak as if the spilling of blood is a bad thing."  The man hefted his maul back onto his shoulder.  "It is a fool's errand but you are headstrong and far be it from me to stand in the way of your desires.  Follow me."  Without another word, or even glance in your direction he stalked toward the ruined bridge and crossed it.  Walked right over it as if the damage you saw was nothing more than an illusion.

Your call whether you follow or not.  Yes, I'd like you to roll skills when you are actively attempting to use them.  'Actively' is the key word.  In many situations I will roll things behind the scenes but any roll you may make as a player will trump my rolls if I've already made one.  This gives you the ooption of employing skills when and how you want and not leaving it up to me.  Sometimes I won't make any rolls, especially for social skills since most of them are RP'd out but actively using a skill with which a character has ranks will more times than not give the character a little extra measure of success than they normally would have had.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine paused for the briefest moment as the man started away across the bridge.  The emphasis on the word 'desires' seemed to carry more meaning than would first seem.  The young woman was swaying towards the idea that the stranger was infact a lycan himself and the desire he spoke of was to lead Antoine into the lycan lair where she herself would join with them.

Antoine pondered this as she followed the man across the rickety looking bridge.  Perhaps the bridge was fully intact and was made to look in poor condition to deter people from crossing it.  Well, it worked as Antoine would certainly not have attempted the crossing had the stranger not led the way.

As she followed the strange wanderer, her senses heightened as she wondered what fate lay in store for her.  Again acutely conscious of the fact she declined Horrace's offer of silver weaponry, Antoine considered the possibility that she was heading to her doom.  Yet to carry such items would surely cross the lycans even before she had a chance to open her mouth.

Resolved in her determination to speak fairly and diplomatically with the lycans, Antoine pressed on with the assumption that the man was leading her to the werewolves.  Finally, after much silence, Antoine spoke.

"I assume you are taking me to ze 'ome of zose who live in zis area.  Can I ask ze name of my guide and tell me, do you live zere too?"

The bridge was indeed in disrepair as it appeared.  When Antoine stepped boldly out over the open expanse her foot found purchase not upon roughly hewn boards and timbers but upon a solid smooth plane of force.  Whether the effect was permanent or not could not be determined but at least for the time being she could cross the river without getting wet or risking her neck traversing the fallen structure.

"My name is Dirk"  Antoine's guide stopped in his tracks and turned to face her, his features twisted and contorted into a feral crossbreed "and you will get to deliver your message.  Be warned that not all share my control over our affliction."

Dirk grabbed Antoine's arm lest she decide to flee and continued walking with her in tow.  Though his grip was not painful the strength in his hand alone was well evident.  He did not bother with returning to his human form and instead existed comfortably in the hideous blend of feral werewolf and kindly human.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
When Dirk revealed his true nature to Antoine, it just confirmed her belief that infact he could be a werewolf himself.  Rather than being shocked at his altered appearance, Antoine smiled sweetly at him.  Extending the hand of the arm Dirk wasn't holding, the young woman greets him proper.

"I am pleased to meet you Dirk.  My name is Antoine."

Whether Dirk shakes the woman's hand or not, Antoine continues to talk to the werewolf to find out a little more about the situation in the area and about werewolves in general before they reach their intended destination.

"Do not worry yourself Dirk, I do not intend to flee.  As you know, I am 'ere to get your side of ze story about ze relationship between your people and ze residents of Rosewood.  I confess to knowing little about your ways ozer zan what is written but I aim to rectify zis also.  Once I understand zis, per'aps ze animosity between ze townsfolk and yourselves can be quelled and all can live in relative peace.  In spite of your earlier statement zat zis is a fools errand, do you not see a way out, 'owever slim?"

Dirk seems a bit surprised by your cool reaction to both his transformation and his gruff treatment of your arm.  "If you seek to become afflicted I can oblige right here, there is no need to imperil yourself with the others."  Dirk said seeing no other real reason for you to come here.  He let your arm free and stood chest to nose with you.  "It is not altogether uncommon for some to come and seek our bite in some misguided attempt at power.  We all learn, even them, that it is a curse and not something to be sought."

"Have you seen what one of my kind can do to an innocent child beneath the light of  full moon?  Certainly not if you wish to put an end to the hunt."  Dirk's eyes seemed to grow distant, distant and feral as his mind drifted further from his human side.  "You are lucky to have encountered me Antione.  I am amongst the most human of my pack yet I too thirst for blood and the thrill of the hunt.  Some do not even try to control the beasts within, some revel in their power, constantly preying upon any who show weakness to them.  They are of my pack but I deign their existence.  It is they who challenge the hunt and they who fall prey."

Dirk pulled aside a large weepy bush to reveal a small settlement of makeshift dwellings and burning cookfires.  Wolves, humans, and things in between roamed the camp but all stopped to see and smell the new arrival.  "My pack."

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine listened to Dirk as he spoke.  He mentioned that he was one of the most human of his pack and Antoine wondered if he was previously human before being afflicted with lycanthropy rather than being born into the pack.  He also mentioned the words "my pack" and Antoine did not know whether he was referring to him just being a part of the pack or that he leads it.

As Antoine pondered these thoughts, she watched Dirk pull back the weeping bush to reveal the campsite within.  Her heart skipped a beat at the sight of many lycans wondering around in varying forms and for the first time, Antoine realised her mortal danger.  However, she did not show fear or weakness feeling that if she did so, she would have no chance of earning the respect of the pack and would probably be killed in quick time.  Still, Antoine was in awe of the sight.  Never would she have dreamed of ever meeting a werewolf, yet here she was with a whole pack!

Not daring to move into the encampment without Dirk's lead, Antoine turned to him and spoke instead.  "Dirk, what you say touches me and I sense zat not all wish to kill for sport and would razer live out zeir lives in relative peace.  You say zis is 'your pack', does zis mean you are zeir leader or is zere someone else you would have me meet?"

"I owe much to this pack, they took me in without question when others sought to kill me.  They asked for nothing in return.  You must speak to Canus if you want to influence the pack.  Until then you will be safe with me, you are my prize and only Canus would have right to you over me."  The starkness with which he described the social structure of the pack was shocking.  It dawned upon you just how savage and base these creatures were.

Dirk entered the clearing and shot looks at several of his pack mates, baring his elongated teeth and even growling at one of them.  Were it not for Dirk's presence there was little doubt that Antoine would have been torn limb from limb by now.  How fortuitous that she should have happened across him, or perhaps it was the other way around.  The travel through the camp was a blur but after some length of time you arrived at one of the makeshift dwellings constructed of small logs and a thatch roof.  Dirk grabbed Antoine's arm and they entered together.

Inside a large wolf lay curled on a soft bed of flowers.  Three females lay around him licking themselves and the male.  "I bring my prize to you Canus, she does not desire our power, only to speak with you."  The large male laying upon the bed of flowers rose to his feet sending the females scurrying to the corners of the room.  Before Antoine's rapt eyes the wolf shifted and grew until it seemed he would burst through the roof.  By the time he reached seven feet in height he shared many human characteristics but was nowhere near as tame looking as Dirk had after his transformation.

Feral eyes looked you up and down and his nose twitched as if smelling your much-disguised fear.  Sharp claws clicked menacingly against each other as he flexed his fur-covered human hands.  "Just what is it you need to speak to me about girl?"

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine followed Dirk through the pack lair and felt a thousand pair of eyes on her body.  She felt as though Dirk was the only thing currently keeping her alive although as an afterthought, perhaps the werewolves might have been so stunned to see a human striding boldly into their lair, they may have stayed their attack, at least until the pack leader had seen her.

Following Dirk into the pack-leader's hut, Antoine couldnt help but see the resemblance to a hareem.  The females preening the werewolf lord and the lord being master of all he surveys.  Truly there was not a wolf who matched the leader's physical prowess, not that Antoine noticed anyway as she walked through the encampment.  After Canus has shifted more towards human form though, the nature of his build went with him as he stood there like a fearsome warrior.

Antoine tried her damnedest not to show any fear, doing so would weaken her stance and this (she felt) would count against her in any social interaction.  She did however make a point of showing respect to Canus, despite the relative crudeness of social structure within the pack, clearly Canus earned his position and Antoine was not about to undermean that.  With a slight bow to the leader without losing eye contact, Antoine spoke.

"Greetings to you, Lord.  My name is Antoine D'Marque and I come to you as a person loyal to no specific faction, yet sits between yourselves and ze town of Rosewood.  I 'ave recently learnt zat ze town practices a ritual 'unt of your people and such an event is imminent, yet on questioning zose 'umans involved as to why ze 'unt exists, zey give only glib excuses for zeir behaviour.  Zey say zat you 'deserve' to be 'unted and zat you should be 'wiped from ze area'.  I do not share zis view and wish to 'ear your opinion on ze subject."

Large canine teeth dripped with saliva as Canus listened to you.  "Is that what they have told you?  That they hunt us?"  Canus' jowls pulled back as he howled in what you could only assume was a laugh.  Even Dirk next to you smirked.

"It is we who hunt them to bolster our pack and acquire new females with which to mate."  Canus' form shifted again, this time returning him to a normal human appearance, a ruggedly handsome chap to be sure.  The females behind him followed suit, each of them turning into a beautiful elf maiden.  "Perhaps that is why you have come?" he concluded with a lustful desire burning in his eyes.

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine watches with great interest as Canus and then his mates shift form into the beautiful creatures that they are.  She wondered about the werewolves forms and found herself thinking about things like how to they control their shape, does the original shape of the human (or elf so it seems) determine what the wolf form will look like.  Sensing her mind wondering from the topic in hand, she mentally shook herself back to reality and looked at Canus and his mates appreciatively.

"I must confess zat since learning of your presence, I 'ave been intrigued by your people; 'ow you live, what it means to be blessed (or cursed as some would say) wiz your abilities.  'owever, I did not come 'ere because I desire your power, nor did I take ze journey intending to mate.  I came 'ere because I believed ze townfolk's attitude of wanting to 'unt you to extinction was unfair and unjust and I 'oped for a reconciliation of some sort.  Failing zat, zen at least you would know zat a 'unt was imminent and you could do somezing about it."

Antoine paused for a moment to let Canus take in the reasons for her presence in his camp.  Of course it had crossed her mind about giving herself to the lycans willingly, any normal person would wonder at the power of their condition.  Yet Antoine was sure there were hidden dangers with that and she couldn't help but wonder that if she became afflicted, would she be able to control the werewolf killer instinct when surrounded by her friends?  Either way, truly she was at Canus' mercy now, however all fear had subsided from the attractive rougue as she had made peace with whatever fate had in store for her.  Antoine smiled at the handsome lycan and continued to reason with him.

"I wish to see no deaths on eizer side but as your numbers are far less zan zeirs, it is your people I am more concerned about.  You say you 'unt zem to acquire more females, surely you must zen be concerned at your numbers and would not want to risk losing any?  Per'aps zere is anozer way of bolstering your pack wiz females wizout ze risk of death?  I am sure zat eizer in nearby Rosewood or in any ozer town, zere must be some females who are not ''appy wiz zeir lot' and would join wiz you willingly?"

[Private to Dungeon Master: Just a note to say I'm throroughly enjoying the storyline.  It's had a few twists in it and as you know, I like to leave things alone to see how then pan out.  Didn't see a pregnancy coming my way but hey - thats what makes this the best game I've played :-)  Hope I'm not dragging things out too much but let me know if I am .]

Canus suddenly, and quite violently, took on the characteristics of a werewolf.  Fur grew from his exposed skin, muscles bulged with inhuman strength, teeth sharpened and grew and claws ripped through the flesh of his fingertips dripping blood onto the ground.  None of which seemed to happen with the conscious effort that Dirk and even Canus had displayed earlier.

So quick did Canus leap upon Antoine that it almost seemed as if it was not happening.  Antoine crashed hard to the ground, her head slamming into the dirt.  Dazed she saw Dirk sliding away from her in obvious fear of Canus.  Saliva from Canus' pulled back jowls dripped onto her face as he pinned her to the ground.  "I choose!  I am the alpha!"  Sharp claws dug into Antione's arms sending streams of blood spilling into the dirt floor of Canus' lair.

As she lay on the ground helpless and impotent Antoine's vision began to narrow and blur.  From fear, blood loss or the impact of her head on the ground it did not matter for in a moment utter darkness overcame her and Canus, Dirk, the lair, all of it was gone.

[Private to Antoine D'Marque: I'm glad you're enjoying it!  I feel a bit heavy-handed driving the action given the serious implications of this down the road but I understand you want the story to take you places instead of you taking the story places, I have the same preference as a player.  Go ahead and make a post here, I've got some die rolls to make then we may or may not be resuming here or in a different private thread.]

Re: Antoine D'Marque - Secrets Within
Antoine had always considered herself quick and agile.  A deft shot with a bow, neat movement in hand-to-hand combat (for a non-warrior) and nimble fingers to help get to those hard-to-reach places.  Compared to the lightning speed of Canus though, Antoine - even with her agility - had no chance in avoiding the great wolf's assault.

For the first time since the thrill of caving way back in Sembia, Antoine genuinely felt afraid.  As Canus exerted his will on her and her body slowly faded away from consciousness, she wondered exactly what it was she was afraid of...

[Private to Dungeon Master: Such a cool turn of events and a very fitting action for Canus to take (in your position, I would have done the same thing!)  Of course, I now wonder "what next for Antoine" and hope that she aint dead (or lost to the world of NPC).  Still, it is the risk I undertook when I went down this road and fully accept the consequences.  I await your next post with great anticipation.]

The blackness moves around you.  Swaying to and fro as if you ride atop the forescastle of a ship on the open sea or on the back of a marching warhorse.  A pain from somewhere below that convulses your body.  With a violent wretch the pain is expelled.  The silent and still blackness returns.

A piercing cold overcomes your body, so suddenly and violently that you can remember nothing else.  Tumbling and twisting out of control your hands and legs flail in an effort to do what your mind cannot.  A scream is stifled before it bears noise as cold water shoots into your mouth and down your throat.  Miraculously your hands find purchase on rocks amid the rushing waters and your head breaks the surface finding air to fill burning lungs.

The raging waters of a river surge past you as you cling to the rocks for your life.  Upstream, in the fading light of day you spot the destroyed bridge.  Two wolves stare down the river with an eerie sentience in their eyes before turning and loping off into the woods.
