Re: Hell Hath no Fury Like a....
Antoine regarded the man for a moment and with another warm smile, simply replied, "Surely."  She pulled away from the table and stood up, waiting for Jaerod to take the lead.

A Chance to Reconsider
Jaerod extended his bent arm for Antoine to rest a hand should she so desire and led them out the inn's side door, through the stable and around several corners until they found themselves on a deserted street.  Jaerod made small talk about the hot weather and how successful the hunt had been, he even stopped to pluck a pretty blue flower from the side of the road which he handed to Antoine.

Finally Jaerod stopped and turned to regard her.  "You musn't go on with this Antoine.  It may seem exhilarating now and may grant you power but at what cost?  Those you care for will no longer matter to you.  Love will no longer exist for you.  It is not too late to stop it, I can help you Antoine, you do not need to go through this alone."

Somehow he knew.

Re: A Chance to Reconsider
Antoine followed Jaerod out through the inn's side door and along the streets.  She accepted his arm in kindness and also the flower which he picked for her.  In actuality, this was the first time in days, weeks even that Antoine felt like her "normal self" but she internally chastised herself for being emotional, [get a grip Antoine, don't let emotions cloud your judgement, you are beyond that now.]

Somehow, Antoine knew what Jaerod was going to say when he spoke to her alone.  She wasn't sure why she thought this, perhaps a sixth sense or maybe just a gut feeling.  Even so, she scrutenised the man as he talked before she gave her response.

OOC Just wanted to do this first.  I have a reply in mind but the result of this roll will help.

15:53, Today: Antoine D'Marque rolled 25 using 1d20+9. Sense motive.

Jaerod appears truly concerned for you.  In addition what he says is said in a way that convinces you he speaks what he knows to be the truth.

Re: A Chance to Reconsider
The smile Antoine gave to Jaerod initially turned from sweet to wry.  The initial thoughts the young rogue had were ones of superiority and smugness, yet the smile began to fade as the young man continued to talk.  The feelings and emotions Antoine had been experiencing lately were strange; excilerating yet frightening;  hunger yet starvation and perhaps most of all, great malice and at other times regret.

Slowly, Antoine's gaze turned to the floor.  How this man came to know, Antoine could not be sure but he appeared to speak with wisdom.  Finally and in less confident tones than of late, she responded.  "It 'as been...strange lately Jaerod.  I feel as zough I 'ave been given a great gift and wiz zis gift, I believe it will make me a better person.  Sometimes I fink it will be of great benefit to me, ze guardians and ze whole town of Rosewood and yet ozer times, times when I am alone, I fink of it benefitting me only."

Antoine slowly lifted her head and looked directly into Jaerods' eyes.  Her voice was sincere and seeked answers, "'ow come you know of zis gift, do you 'ave it too?"

A Love Lost to the Wolves
A far-away look of sorrow clouded Jaerod's eyes.  "It is no gift Antoine and yes I suffer from it but not directly.  I love a woman, as beautiful as you if you can imagine, and once she loved me too.  We had plans to marry, travel, and someday return to Rosewood where we would raise our family.  But then she was seduced beneath the full moon, the vile full moon, by one of the werewolves who promised her power and invincibility.  He did not care to mention that the price would be her soul, her happiness, her love, me.  Where once she viewed me with compassion and tenderness she now sees me as weak and unworthy."

"We still talk from time to time for I cannot bear to let her go completely.  She told me of a woman with brown hair and sparkling blue eyes that had come seeking Canus and how he had afflicted you, for I knew it must be you, before casting you out of the pack.  I desperately hoped you would realize your plight and seek the aid of those who carried the means to a cure on the hunt but you did not come.  And now you are here, pretending as if nothing had happened.  There is hope Antoine, you do not need this fell power to make you great, you are a Guardian of Rosewood!"  Handsome eyes glistened with tears welling within, eyes of a man who did not want to lose another.

Re: A Love Lost to the Wolves
As Jaerod retold his story, Antoine could feel the blood pumping around her body.  He spoke the truth, Antoine could feel the changes in her which were not restricted to the physical.  Her dreams have been darker of late and despite her attempts to control them, she had the overwhelming urge to give herself unto them.  If she did this, surely she would be lost.  But did it have to be this way?

Antoine let out a soft moan which ended in a low roar.  "Nooooo....I need answers!"  Without another word, she sprinted away from the figure of Jaerod, along the streets of Rosewood and out of town not towards Canus and the pack, but northwards.

Her heart was racing and her mind doing somersaults with conflicting emotions.  The town was minutes behind her now and yet she moved swiftly on.  As the anger inside her started to build, she found herself moving into a more feral state and her form grew.  Her body became stronger, larger and yet more lithe.  Still she ran.  Her head altered into a semi-wolflike state with sharp fangs.  Still she ran.  Her hair grew wild on her head and short tufts of fur sprouted over her body.  Still she ran, ran to speak to only those who she thought she could turn to.  Not the townfolk, not the guardians, not the pack but to those at Fulgar's encampment...

Looking for Answers
Flamerule 2, 1373DR
Early Afternoon
Warm

Jaerod could do nothing but watch with sagging shoulders as Antoine sprinted away.  "I hope you find them." he whispered.

As she ran Antoine again felt herself giving way to and embracing the primal beast within.  A hawk circled overhead, she could sense it as much as see it.  Spiralling around and around again and again it soon became clear the hawk was following her.  After twenty minutes the hawk swooped down, flared its wings in front of Antoine and in a sudden transformation shifted into its normal form, that of the druid Willow.

"Halt!" she shoutd extending an open hand toward the loping werewolf several yards in front of her.

Re: Looking for Answers
Even in her confused state, Antoine knew that only Willow or perhaps Eloranth could help her.  Fulgar was too bullish to care of such things and Kendra would only encourage Antoine to embrace the darkness, perhaps even try to use the young rogue for her own purposes.  As soon as she noticed the hawk flying above her, Antoine knew it to be Willow and her heart lifted slightly.  By the time Willow had descended to the ground and altered into her natural form, Antoine had already come to a standstill.

The young woman did not want to remain in her current form, she wanted to speak to Willow as her "normal" self.  The druid had a calming influence on her and closing her eyes, Antoine concentrated with all her effort on her human form.  For the first time, she felt the transformation slowly begin to take place.  Her body eased, her hands returned to their normal, slender selves and by the time she opened her eyes and looked at herself, she saw she was human again.  A smile passed over Antoine's face.  A real smile, something she had not done in days.  She had managed to achieve control over the shapeshifting and that was something to be proud of.

Turning back to face Willow, she felt the druid's gaze on her, penetrating into the depths of her eyes, trying to search out that which Antoine seeked.  Finally, Antoine spoke.  "Oh Willow, I know we have spoken little since our first meeting but I need guidance from someone with greater wisdom than I."

Moving slightly off the road, Antoine found a small boulder and sat down, her legs weary from the running.  "Having been given the power that I have now, I initially felt elated.  I felt closer to nature than ever before, I can smell the trees, the birds, other creatures and it brings me peace.  I felt sure that this gift as I saw it would benefit everyone; me, the Guardians of Rosewood, everyone.  And yet sometimes my thoughts are moodier, darker than I've ever known them.  Others say that in time, I will forego my human side as I will view them as weak and inferior and I am afraid that they are right.  I would dearly love to retain this gift, do you think I can control it?  Tell me the others are wrong."

Antoine looked up at the druid who had listened intently throughout.  A tear slowly trickled down the young woman's cheek as she regarded one of nature's kindred with pleading eyes.  "Help me Willow."

[Private to Dungeon Master: 08:12, Today: Secret Roll: Antoine D'Marque rolled 31 using 1d20+11. Control shape: Hybrid -> Human.

I am conscious of the fact that my holiday/vacation is coming soon and I will only be able to post up to Tuesday 27th June.  However, I didn't want to curb roleplaying Antoines current predicament as I feel it would not do her character any justice.  I have been thoroughly enjoying this episode and with Jaerod forcing Antoine to look at herself, this has thrown an interesting fork in Antoine's path.

OOC BTW, months of "talking like zis" has taken it's toll and now I shall leave the speech text unaltered.  Everyone knows what Antoine speaks like and for readability's sake, I'll not type anymore 'Franglais' (hooray!)

"You forget to whom you speak child.  There is no elf, myself included who finds merit in being human."  Willow rested a reassuring hand on Antoine's shoulder.  "have ou not answered your own question?  Have you not mastered it already?  I know much about lycanthropy and controling one's form is not easy."

Willow circled around behind Antoine taking the hand that was on her shoulder and gathering in the Guardian's long brown hair which she stroked soothingly.  "You must erase your own doubts first before your mastery can be complete.  If I were unsure of my ability to maintain the form of a hawk I surely would plummet from the sky and smash myself upon the rocks.  At the heart of everything is one's will and determination.  Those who master themselves are recognized for their greatness."

Willow's delicately boned fingers pulled themselves through Antoine's hair reminding her of being a small girl back in Sembia.  "Will you embrace yor greatness?"

[Private to Antoine D'Marque: I understand your timeline and I've been trying to work with that as I did with Peter's.  The last thing I wanted to accomplish on your mini was to have Antoine re-examine her decision and internally commit to something for better or worse.  By happenstance it's also allowed me to lay some unplanned groundwork for future events in the game.  So long as Antoine finishes up with Willow I'm satisfied that Antoine will be ready to rejoin the others when you return from your absence.  I think that can be done before Tuesday.  Right?]

Re: Looking for Answers
Willow did indeed speak with great wisdom and Antoine felt like a small child, inexperienced in the World.  The comely druid fingering Antoine's hair calmed the troubled rogue with both her touch and her words.  Regaining a little of her composure, Antoine replied, "I wish to embrace it fully, truly I do yet I wonder what will become of my colleagues, my friends.  When I become the wolf, I feel free and strong and need no-one else.  Sometimes I even feel resentment for those I used to - I mean - I do hold dear."

Antoine arose from her temporary seat and stood close to face Willow.  "Somebody told me that someone they loved embraced the gift and eventually, the gift took away the love from the afflicted.  Will the same happen to me?  If I  fully give myself to the wolf, will I forget how to care?  I feel I could slip away into my own place and once I do, I fear I shall never return.  With practice, I am sure I will master the physical transformation but I am not so convinced about controlling the mental and emotional change."

[Private to Dungeon Master: Yeah, I'm sure we can tie this up by Thursday.  Basically I thought I'd roleplay the alignment change.  Antoine has now been "checked" into looking at herself.  I thought the change would be fairly quick but not overnight.  She is having a crisis of confidence as she wants the wolf but fears she will lose the feelings she has for the guardians.]

"My child, love is not something that can be taken, it can only be given."  Willow's fingertips traced the beautiful line of Antoine's cheek.

"You will not hear those with lycanthropy call it an affliction or a curse, that term is used by people resentful of those who have it as well as those who are too afraid of the unknowns to embrace them.  Do not be fearful of embracing it Antoine.  Have you ever known a warrior to forsake a weapon, a sage a book, or a farmer the fertile field?  All these things aid them in their endeavors, why should lycanthropy be any different?"

[Private to Antoine D'Marque: Oh my are there some interesting tidbits in there...  Just to be clear, OOC I do expect a darkening of Antoine's character to whatever degree seems approproate given our previous discussions while IC Willow is persuading Antoine of quite the opposite.]

Re: Looking for Answers
Antoine continued to listen intently to Willow and nodded as the druid gave her advice.  "The wolf does give my life meaning, that is true and it is also true that until my time in Rosewood, I have always been my own person."

Antoine pondered Willows' words in a moments silence, subconsiously playing with the straps on her pack.  "Maybe you are right Willow.  Perhaps I have been worrying unnecessarily about what other people will think of the new me.  After all, I feel I am a new and improved me.""

Her thoughts turned to continuing to help with the guardians, although from that, they diversified to other matters.  Seeing Willow as one of Fulgar's Five reminded her of that bitch, Kendra.  Now she would need to be dealt with, but the time was not right.  If she abandoned the wolf, she would find it more difficult to deal with the sly thief and so it would be best to wait for the opportune moment to strike.  Of course, there was also Canus to contend with at some point.  [Patience] she kept thinking...

Smiling at the beautiful Willow, Antoine took the druids' hands in her own.  "I do not view this as a curse, but a gift.  If people cannot accept me for who I am then that is their doing.  Your words have helped me see through my worries and now I have none.  You truly are a wonderful woman Willow."  Antoine slowly brought the druids hands up to her mouth and kissed each one gently.

To Prove a Gift
Willow appeared pleased with Antoine's decision and allowed her palms to be kissed before gently dropping them to her sides.  "So long as you are a Guardian of Rosewood you will have worries but perhaps not the ones you fret over."

Willow took a step back as if preparing to shift and take flight but stopped.  "You can prove to all who might doubt that your lycanthropy is indeed a gift that aids you in your defense of Rosewood.  The lair of a wyrmling dragon is not far from here and though young it has accumlated a rather sizable hoard.  With your gift you can defeat the wyrmling and claim its hoard for your own.  None could doubt your gift if you triumphed over a dragon and the treasure could be put to good use in Rosewood's defense.  I will fly over the lair, follow me if you wish..."  The last word was barely spoken and Willow lept into the air, transformed back into a hawk and flapped her mighty wings driving her skyward.  Her triumphant hawk's scream split the mountain air.

Re: To Prove a Gift
The approval of one so beatiful, so in tune with nature's beauty and above all, one with such respect could not go unheeded by the young rogue.   Antoine praised her own wisdom for seeking out the druid to speak with on the matter of her gift.  It came as no surprise to her that the outcome of the conversation was to fully embrace the power.  In retrospect, it was such an easy decision to make that Antoine could not conceive why she ever had doubts in the first place.

Shaking these thoughts from her head, her interest was piqued when Willow mentioned something of a modest amount of treasure being greedily hoarded by a young dragon.  Her excitement levels rose at this news, [Think of all the help I could give if I found myself magical items with which to compliment my gift,] she thought.  [Hmmm...a dragon is a challenging opponent even when not long hatched from the egg but this will truly test my power!]

With a look of fierce determination in her eyes, Antoine looked skyward for the bird-form of Willow and followed her lead to the wealth beyond.

Lair of the Dragon
Flamerule 2, 1373DR
Mid Afternoon
Windy and warm

Willow's majestic flight in her alternate form led Antoine east roughly half a mile to a rocky area of the foothills covered with towering oak, ash, and fir trees.  Having been led directly to it Antoine had no difficulty finding the small lair in a shallow cave between two outcroppings of stone.  Her heightened sense of warned her of the dragon's presence, at least she presumed the smell to be that of the dragon for it was unlike anything she had smelled before.

Overhead the scream of a hawk split the air and Willow circled away leaving Antoine to her glory.

Re: Lair of the Dragon
As she approached the hidden lair, Antoine's senses heightened and the andrenaline began to pump through her body.  Truly this was the most exciting experience she had been part of in a long while.  It seemed to Antoine that perhaps Willow brought her here to test her, to revel in the gift or to die through over-confidence and naivity.

Willow sent a piercing screech way above the treetops and Antoine watched her disappear out of view.  Returning her focus to the cave entrance, Antoine smiled a wry smile as she concentrated on the task in hand.  At peace, Antoine closed her eyes and began the transformation she had performed earlier that same day.  Once completed, she looked down at her sinuey arms and her long fingers had razor sharp claws on the ends.  Her grin now bared large fangs and a drip of saliva fell silently to the stony ground.

Slowly but assuredly, Antoine crept softly into the dragon's lair, attempting to expect the unexpected.

A Hoard to be Seized
The cave turned out to be a bit larger than Antoine expected as she crept forward.  The unfamiliar smell magnified in intensity nearly taking away her breath for although Antoine had mastered many aspects of her affliction she was not yet accustomed to the heightened sense of smell.  A flicker, more like a glint really, caught Antoine's eye in front of her and to the left.  There sat a dragon with yellowish scales tinged with bits of green.  It was coiled around its modest hoard but Antoine estimated it was at least ten feet long and five feet tall.  Bony horns protruded at all angles from its head which lifted off theground with a start as it suddenly became aware of your presence.  The dragon's scaled body began to unfurl from its protective embrace of its treasure in order to defend it from the intruder to its lair.

Re: A Hoard to be Seized
Antoine crept forward in the darkness and yet saw with the clarity of daylight.  Rounding the corner she saw the oversized lizard sitting atop it's modest hoard which caused the rogue to smile a dangerous smile.  Sticking to the shadows, Antoine began to quietly approach the dragon with the intent on gaining the upper hand.  However, the young woman was still getting used to her alternate form and in the darkness, her normal sure-footedness let her down as she kicked a small stone across the cave floor sending an echo around the cavern.

As the dragon looked up and directly at her, Antoine knew immediately that the opportunity for stealth had passed her by.  Instead, she launched herself towards the creature with a snarl, "You're mine, lizard!"

The dragon unfurled its body and sprung onto its clawed feet just in time to meet your charge but too late to defend against your viscious bite. Shrieking with rage its jaw nearly unhinged and a bolt of pure electricty crackled out of the dark recesses of its throat. Ready for such a reprisal Antoine deftly spun away, the only harm being that to her nose from the pervasisve smell of ozone in the air.

Re: A Hoard to be Seized
The dragon twisted and writhed as Antoine's feral werewolf form gnashed and clawed at its scales yet hardened with time. Despite the inneffectiveness of its lightning the bronze dragon wyrmling was not without its defenses. As soft as its scales were its claws were that much sharper and it raked them across Antoine as she dove in with her fangs. It followed with a quick bite to Antoine's neck but both attacks were far from mortal wounds to Antoine in her powerful hybrid form.

Re: A Hoard to be Seized
The claws and fangs of the werewolf in hybrid form continued to find the mark against the young dragon.  Dragon blood started to spill from wounds opening under the scales and the scent of this drove Antoine on and she felt she would be victorious...

[Private to Dungeon Master: As it is now almost midnight for me and I have to get up to catch a plane in 4 hours time, it looks like I wont be able to finish this off sadly.  I know you were keen to have us all back together again when I return from my holidays but I hope my absence wont count against me (I reckon I could win here and get that treasure ;-)

I'm happy to quickly finish off the melee when I get back but whatever you decide to do, I'll see you in a couple weeks.

Victory!
In less than a minute it was over.  Green tinged yellow scales scraped free by Antoine's grotesque claws lay scattered across the floor of the cave.  As the dragon went limp Antoine seemed to regain control over her senses, if only a bit, and found her jaw clamped around the neck of the dragon.  It was a beastly act, and one certainly not befitting a woman of Antoine's breeding and class.

I finished rolling the combat since Antoine's player is on holiday until the middle of July.  Depending upon other events I may or may not move forward from here on an NPC basis.

Mid Afternoon
Windy and warm

In addition to the scattered scales the floor of the cave was littered with coins of every type and origin, several small jewels, two finely etched and painted vases, a gold chalice, a finely constructed shortsword forged of cold iron, and a large rolled tapestry.  Greedily, almost hungrily, Antoine collected every last bit of the dragon's hoard until nary a copper piece was left lying in a corner.  Thrilled with her newfound wealth she headed back to Rosewood.

Thus concludes your mini.  Please join up with the others in the new thread, The Guardians Reunited.
