Return to the Firehammer Ruins
Continued from A Relative Calm: link to a message in "3.5 DnD - Guardians of Rosewood"

Flamerule 7, 1373DR
Mid Morning

The Guardians, though tempered by experience and hardship, were still driven by the same adventurous hearts that had brought them to Rosewood in the first place.  The day before had been boring to those adventurous hearts and today they were eager to be after the gnolls.  Antoine's emotions were becoming increasingly unstable and volatile and as furious as she had been minutes before, she was now ready to act as if nothing had happened and so at Ramor's urging the group departed for the abandoned Firehammer clanhome.

Dorn trudged along guiding the rest, the way as he had grown accustomed to doing for the Guardians.  Antoine fell in close behind wishing to put the events of Rosewood as far from her as possible while Serol and Ramor fell into easy conversation about faith and fire which left Peter in the middle but feeling isolated from the others none the less.  Were it not for dark thoughts and heavy hearts the Guardians would have enjoyed the walk as the morning was a most spectacular one.  The sun shone brightly in the sky that was dotted with puffy clouds.  A light breeze carried the sweet aromas a a hundred species of late-summer blooming flowers and floated butterflies across their path from time to time.  A truly amazing morning indeed, until the buzz of arrows filled the air.

There were so many arrows whizzing through the air, thudding into the ground, and splintering against rocks that it was impossible to tell how many there were or where they were all coming from.  First Antoine then Serol felt the burning sting of arrows striking home.  Then Ramor too and Serol a second time.  Dorn spotted six goblins perched high up the rocky slope to their right, the wicked smiles and reloaded shortbows implicating them in the attack.  Antoine spotted more goblin archers ahead and to the right, they too perched upon the rocks.  And finally Ramor, despite his stinging wound spotted another three high behind them.  The Guardians had stumbled into a very well-laid trap.  To make matters worse Dorn heard the tell-tale howls of worgs coming from ahead accompanied by a chorus of battlecries in the gibbering language of goblins.  "DEATH TO GRINTAK'S SLAYERS, HIS REVENGE WILL BE TAKEN!"  The goblins it seemed were very intent upon exacting that revenge as a troll sprang from some boulders behind them blocking any hope of escape.

The goblins achieved a surprise round.  I went ahead and morked the goblins on the map that individuals identified figuring that would be the first thing communicated.  Please roll your initiative and if you beat 10 go ahead and post round one actions.  If your init is less than ten please wait until I make the next summary post containing the monsters' actions before posting your actions.

The group is surrounded by high rocks.  The grey rocks on the map may be scaled with a climb check DC 15 allowing 1/2 movement.  Failure by ten or more indicates a fall.  The goblin archers benefit from concealment and all ranged attacks are subject to a 20% miss chance (1 to 20 on 1D100 roll).

10:27, Today: Antoine D'Marque rolled 22 using 1d20+7. Initiative.

Caught in the crossfire, Antoine reacted immediately to the threat on all sides.  Nocking an arrow in her bow, Antoine moved closer to the creatures from the rear and let loose a shot which whizzed past Ramor's ear and thudded into a goblin chest.

Re: Return to the Firehammer Ruins
Serol winced as not one but two arrows struck him from high above.  He knew that the guardians would be cut to ribbons if those archers were not dealt with quickly.  He called upon the power of the firelord and and summoned a massive invisible barrier to protect the guardians from further harm.

He spoke quietly, but urgently not wishing his surprise to be known until it was too late.  "Fear not further arrows.  The power of Kossuth protects us but you'll need to take a step forward to fire at them, duck back under for your safety."

As soon as he finished speaking the words, Serol reached into his pouch and withdrew his deadly chain that had sat idle in his most recent battle.  This foe would not fair nearly as well as the last against the power of his magic flaming chain.  The same chain, he mused that had done so much to bring down Grintak, himself!

07:08, Today: Serol Kinspar rolled 22 using 1d20+3. Serol Init.

Summoned as large a Wind Wall as I can and placed it in front of us between the foes and ourselves.  I want it so that where we stand we're at the tail end so we can step out fire then freestep back into it at the end.

The wall is 50' long going diagonally from R:15 to N:19 (it's hard to tell with the shadows right there)  I counted 45' with the diagonal = 10' rule.  This should completly cut off all arrows from the front two gatherings of Goblins.  It won't provide any cover from the rear 3.  It's 25' high possitioned 5' above the ground (so it's 30' above any of our heads).  This should allow our archers to step forward fire and 5' free step back.  It will last for 5 rounds (hopefully long enough for the stupid goblins to figure we're completly immune to further arrow strikes).

I can take out the remaining three archers next round or I can take down the troll.  It might work out better to have Antione and Peter take down the archers this round leaving Dorn to concentrate on the Worgs while Ramor and I use our fire to the best advantage against the troll.

Re: Return to the Firehammer Ruins
11:55, Today: Ramor ibn Adnan rolled 21 using 1d20+6. Initiative.

OOC: Wow that was a fast transition.  Ramor had all the intention of casting mage armor through the metamagic rod - extended spell once on the road; I'll accept whatever you decide since I didn't state it before, but Ramor knows better than to actively pursue gnolls without protection.  :)

Also, where do I get the map?

Ah, a troll.  How sad for him.  Ramor casually smiled as Serol's wind wall was erected, and his thoughts truly bore a measure of sadness as he lifted his hand and unleased the fiery fury of the Weave against the creature.  As any good wizard had been taught, Ramor made sure that there were other targets for the troll in the way.  Trolls hated fire, and he was sure that his magic would make him the first target of the creatures ire.

sudden maximized scorching ray
12:09, Today: Ramor ibn Adnan rolled 17 using 1d20+4. Ranged Touch Attack, Scorching Ray 2.
12:08, Today: Ramor ibn Adnan rolled 24 using 1d20+4. Ranged Touch Attack, Scorching Ray 1.

48 fire damage

Aha! I see the map!
Standard Action - scorching ray
Move Action - R 22 between the boulders (would that provide partial cover from the rear three?)

Antoine was the first of the Guardians to react to the ambush and nimbly ducked around Peter  who compared to Antoine seemed to be stuck in slow motion.  As she moved her bow, with arrow nocked, raised toward the southernmost gnolls hiding high up on the rocks above.  The arrow lept from her bow and streaked unerringly toward one very unlucky who ducked a second too late leaving the arrow lodged in it's tiny green neck.  It's eyes flared wide with shock but it did not fall to the ground.  Yet.

Serol was next to act, his martial training that honed his reactions serving him well.  In a surprising tactic that some in his church, Vilthanus one of them no doubt, felt akin to blasphemy he intoned a spell that called drew upon Akadi's domain over the air and erected a wall of upward flowing air to protect from the goblins' arrows.

Ramor as well called upon his magic in times of need and unleashed two incredibly powerful flaming bolts toward the troll.  The troll's dirty gray skin of its chest burst from the impact and heat sending a misting spray of putrid blood into the air.  The attack seemed to drive teh troll into a frenzy and it charged forward, ignoring any order it may have had to stay put and block a retreat.  Long razor-sharp claws crusted with dried blood and bits of gore tore at Serol but failed to penetrate his plate armor.  The shrieking sound of them scraping down the polished breastplate was unnerving and unnatural.

Another volley of arrows streaked down through the air toward the Guardians causing those facing the onslaught to cringe but true to Serol's claim, the arrows deflected upward and harmlessly into the air.  The three goblins behind the Guardians did not face such an obstacle and having seen the effects of Ramor's magic took aim at the lightly protected wizard.  All three arrows thudded into the ground around Ramor, one of them after deflecting off his invisible armor.  High on the rocks the goblin with the arrow stuck in his neck finally toppled over from the wound.

To the north the growling and howling of worgs and the gibbering commands of their riders drew closer.  Three goblins, each mounted on its own worg charged through the pass before coming to a skittering stop on the loose rocks to surround Dorn.

You are all free to assume a weapon or weapons are already drawn.  I'd expect adventuring types like yourselves to travel with bare steel through hostile wilderness.  Swapping weapons/items after your first round will need to be accounted for in your actions however.

I modified the placement of Serol's spell slightly since his intent was clear and the spell description indicated the wall could be shaped in any manner.  It is denoted by the semi-transparent white on the map.

The order below is the order in which I'll apply your next posts.  This summary ended after Round 1 init 10.  the next summary will start with Round 1 init 9 (Dorn) and go through Round 2 init 10 (monsters).

Re: Return to the Firehammer Ruins
Instead of feeling elated that with one shot she managed to fell a goblin archer, Antoine felt frustrated.  "Bah!  This is no use!"  She dropped her bow to one side and closed her eyes.

Within seconds, the comely rogue's body began to twist and shape into the wolf-hybrid form previously witnessed by all but Ramor.  Her height zoomed up towards that of Serol and her muscle increased dramatically.  Her face elongated and pushed outwards to form a half-muzzle whilst her normal human teeth grew almost fourfold into large and deadly fangs.  As before, her trim nails on her hands became a pair of razor-sharp claws and the hair on her head grew wild and untamed.

"It's playtime!!!" she yelled in a rough voice.

Standard Action: Control Shape - Human -> Hybrid (DC15)

07:59, Today: Antoine D'Marque rolled 18 using 1d20+12. Control shape: Human -> Hybrid.

Re: Return to the Firehammer Ruins
Serol did not quite expect the troll to charge him indeed that was most unexpected and even though he saw it coming it still caught him slightly unprepared.  His chain learched forward in an attempt to harm the creature but instead it glanced harmlessly off the creature's left arm not a single spike drawing even a trail of blood.  He braced himself for a long and difficult battle.

It would seem the cosmic law of averages is claiming me.  All those successes in the Rust Monster battle is costing me with the troll.

07:01, Today: Serol Kinspar rolled 10 using 1d20+9. Serol AoO.
07:00, Today: Serol Kinspar rolled 15 using 1d20+9. Serol Chain.

I rolled an AoO incase Ramor's action causes it to charge past me.
