Calen Thalranalda:
My thought was a set of linked gems that could allow us to communicate and locate each other from a distance. As we become more powerful we may break into smaller groups to complete other quests (Calen needs to check out the insect men that have moved into the forest). Having a method to call for help and allow the others to locate them might be cool. . Although he would want to make them less gaudy and easier to keep/wear.
A location beacon, or better still to function as a crystal ball. How about this. If the gems are magicked and placed at the bottom of a small pool of water they could cause the water to function like the 2nd level druid spell reflecting pool. Possibly the power of the gems require 2 people to be in-sink.
Initially a gem would glow or buzz when someone was trying to communicate with the other person. The person calling would need to place the gem at the bottom of a pool and think of the person he/she is looking to find. The person with the buzzing gem would know to place their gem at the bottom of a pool of water, and whoever was calling him/her would come into focus and conversation or a written message could be viewed. Whilst conversation would be great, the written message is not too powerful, but still accomplishing what you are looking for Calen I think. It would also fall in line with your more naturalist flare. Thoughts?
We could secretly add in a bell on Auto's one so we are able to call him just as he is in the middle of a job.
Reflecting Pool (Evocation - Divination)
Level: 2
Range: 1”
Duration: 1 round/level
Area of Effect: Special
ExplanationlDescription: This spell enables the druid to cause a pool
of normal water found in a natural setting to act as a scrying device.
The pool can be of no greater diameter than 2 feet per level of the
spell caster. The effect is to create a scrying device similar to a crystal
ball, in much the same fashion as the magic-user spell magic mirror
and the clerical spell magic font, both described elsewhere in this
text. The scrying can extend only to those planes of existence which
are coexistent with or border upon the Prime Material Plane, Le. the
Inner Planes (including the Para-elemental Planes, Plane of Shadow,
et al.). Penalties for attempting to scry beyond the druid’s own plane,
as given in the description for crystal ball (see Dungeon Masters
Guide) are applicable.
The following spells can be cast through a reflecting pool, with a 5%
per level chance of operating correctly: detect magic, defect Snares
and pits, detect poison. lnfravision and ultravision will operate normally
through the reflecting pool, as will the spells starshine and
moonbeam (see hereafter). The druid must use both mistletoe and
the oil extracted from such nuts as the hickory and the walnut, refined,
and dropped in three measures upon the surface of the pool. (A
measure need be no more than a single ounce of oil.)
