Recaps of Events & Campaign Timeline

TAKE NOTES AND COMMUNICATE!

Most of us are busy grownups (unfortunately) and we can’t always devote as much of our brain matter as we used to gaming. We forget things. We lose track of who such-and-such recurring villain is and why exactly we hate her, or why we even got into this adventure in the first place. It is very helpful to have regular recaps of events that have happened in past sessions; recaps might be brief, hitting the high points, they might be verbose and detailed, and they might even recount funny stuff said at the table. Recaps can be an every session affair, or maybe at the end of each adventure arc, or whenever the players start scratching their heads and wondering what they’re doing and why they’re doing it.

These kinds of reminders could be written up by the DM, or even better if a player is willing to take notes and put things together. A player might even do the recap from the point of view of her character, rather than a "neutral observer" description. It is best if these can be made available for review, either as paper copies or kept as an archive on someone’s weblog, personal site, or PC where anyone can refer back to them if they need to, or just if they feel like an amusing trip down memory lane.

Afternoon of the Spring Festival

Summary of Action

Day 1
Our story commenced at the beginning of the spring festival in Red Hill at noon time.  Outlanders and youngsters out to prove their mettle participated in a rite of passage by shooting the rapids of Ash Falls.  Some did better than others, but all the outlanders were made welcome by the locals for being such good sports about it.  For the first time in recent memory, a local did NOT win the competition.

Who, what, where:

1. Kiley at food table just finished a conversation with Laena Jirrlsditter, priestess of Ehlonna.

2. Ponder Kresh wandering around the courtyard, possibly looking for something or someone after speaking with Tirm Kadakson.

3&4. Calen Thalranalda and Finn Ottarsson - standing with Hagnir Tornirsen eating and drinking.  Calen is wearing a blue sash and is being addressed by most of the locals as River Master.

5. Autolycas - struck out with Hollifun the mage, managed to tick her off and get himself 'steamed'.  Small crowd around him waiting expectantly to see how he reacts.

Feasting has ensued and we are now later in the afternoon.

Re: Afternoon of the Spring Festival

Late Day 1

Our intrepid new group of heroes have accepted a commision from Lord Pol to find out who is stealing the valuables of his small community and return the brigands to justice.  To date, they have been gathering information and are currently interviewing a 'witness' in the form of a dead man - with the help of the local priestess.

Results of the Seance (thanks to Finn for this)

There was in this village an attempt to steal from the shrine of Kord. The attempt failed. What is the common name used by the person that planned the theft?
In life, the human who planned this is known as "The Cleaner"

What other items are your associates going to steal?
The woman of the feather has a task to complete for the circle.  When the task is done, the circle will take it from her...  I know not what else they plan.

What is the significance of the old man, the rusty, pitted dagger and ring. What do they do?
The dagger ever calls to the ring.  When upon the hand of one of the blood, the two shall not be parted.

Tell me where you and your group are hiding.  Where is your base and how do we find it?
To the rising sun, seek the seven dead brothers.  The eldest holds the secrets of now and the future.
The voice evokes memories, scents, and overtones of the deep forest, sun dappled glades, and thunderstorms over forested hills.

What is the location of the Cleaner's base of operations here?
To the rising sun, seek the seven dead brothers.  The eldest holds the secrets of now and the future

How has he avoided being found out before now?
The Cleaner and his Sweepers use meticulous planning to enhance our natural abilities and magical items.  The ring and dagger were often integral to the planning, but the preparation is the core element.

Prologue Red Hill: Into the Thick of It

Prologue Red Hill: Into the Thick of It

Days 2 - 4
After being informed by Pol Monatson and Tirm Kadakson of an attempted theft from the Strongroom of the Tor, the group decide to persue the investigation. They are told that of the three thieves one was killed and two escaped. They joined Hagnir, Laena, and Pol at Monats Tor where they were shown the body of the dead thief. The priestess Laena casted a spell to allow the group to ask questions of the dead thief. The group learned that the thefts have been planned by a master thief, known to Ponder and Auto, called the Cleaner. The group met Althem, an old ranger, who gave forty arrows crafted to damage the undead. Althem told of a series of burial mounds to the east, a clue to the base of operations for the Cleaner.

After discussion at the Nine Arrows Inn, the group followed another clue from the dead thief and guided by Tirm they moved to warn the scribe Runa Amarsditter of possible danger. The group intercepted some more of the cleaners men. One is killed (Giled Awerson), one is captured (Dek Awerson) and one escaped via the river unable to be tracked by Calen and Kiley. Runa told of being hired to copy a scroll some time before. After some creative interrogation Dek confirmed that the Cleaner is based in the old Cairns to the east.

The next morning, after a night at the Nine Arrows, Tirm gave the group a map penned by Althem. After gathering horses and supplies the group is escorted by Lord Pol, Guernat, and Tirm to the point on the river where Calen and Kiley tracked the third thief the night before. They farewelled their escort and followed the thief's tracks, which quickly joined with another set. Before dusk after a day of tracking, Calen announced that they were within an hour of the thieves. It is then that they encounter a wounded bobcat. Calen and Kiley locate the thieves camp and the group formulated a careful plan of attack.

The surprise attack failed and the party was faced by three thieves, a female mage and a raven. After a sprited battle the party was victorious. The Baklunish mage (Drazzla) is killed in grisley fashion. One of the thieves is killed and two are captured (Fashton and Rick). After some disagreement about what to do with the captives the group questioned the thieves. Fashton revealed history of the Cleaner and how he and Drazzla - who was his mistress - set up base in the barrows. Rick remained tight lipped until Kiley finally got to interrogate him her way.

Summary

Into the Thick of It, Part II

Day 5 - 8
Once Drazzla's group was defeated and drained of information, the party pushed on to the barrows.

The Barrows appeared to be of humanoid design and emanated evil.  On first inspection, there were obvious signs of habitation - horses, tracks, and a lookout post on the central barrow.  A burning pit confirmed what the party knew about how the undead threat was dealt with.

The party, after some brief negotiation, saw through the treacherous dealings of the Cleaner and his Lieutenant, Trask.  Combat ensued and the party was once again victorious.  The Cleaner, however, assumed gaseous form and attempted to flee.  Eventually he was cornered and killed, deep in the woods.

The Barrow revealed a gnoll shrine to an unknown god and the stolen goods from Red Hill were recovered.  The party, perhaps wisely, left alone a pit that seemed to lead to a deeper section of the barrow - one from which emanated ominous, chittering laughter and the foul stench of death.

Chapter One:  The Grassy Gnolls

Even before the party could lead the captured horses and loot back to Red Hill, they met Olithar Crowhand, a Druid of the Forest.  In a backhanded way, he thanked them for removing the evil of the barrows and hinted at larger movements within the wood, confirming Calen's thought that a centaur tribe in nearby.  Kiley gained a new friend, a cardinal named Rasptongue.

That night, perhaps warned by the Crowhand, a scouting party of centaurs made themselves known to the party.  Calen narrowly lost a shooting exhibition and Finn appeared to gain a convert.  The leader, named Night Runs Swiftly, said that any questions about the centaur band's actions should be asked of the Heart and Spear, the female and male leaders of the band.

The party received the Heroes' Welcome in Red Hill and were wined and dined accordingly - several new acquaintances were made and a good time was had by all, although only Finn and Kiley slept in the beds provided.  Ponder and Kiley received instruction in magic by a local mage named Hollifun, widely known to be a powerful mage, but also highly eccentric.  Calen spoke at length with a Black Walnut treant named Juglans Fagales learned what the long-lived Wood knew of the history of the area - he also accepted a charge and a burden from the treant.
