As usual, the RNG works hard to screw players over.

There is an Altar of Battle on Frost. it is an ancient relic containing the remains of two long dead nobles. The owning player can move it to another planet as if it was an unit. It provides Ice barbarians with the same bonus as if they were on Frost.

Irulan Kadesh let out a sigh, glancing over the holographic displays of her troops. It was a small enough force to fight for the destiny of her people. Only those who were tied to her by blood were prepared to go to war, her people and the Stellar Pilgrims. That, and the Mercenaries that formed a third of her whole force, loyal only if she could keep paying. But her homeworld was ideally placed, and with the warrior-faith of Kadesh on her side, she could not lose. The plan she and her cousin Lady Enalia had created ought to provide a strong beginning.

Duke Tycho Lortran strolled through his garden, quietly enjoying a brief moment of downtime between meetings with the Imperial Generals from the War Academy and the Admiral of the Imperial Navy.  The morning had seen an interminable discussion of minute details in the latest trade agreements with the mercantile consortium, and the evening would bring an audience with members of the Imperial Bureaucracy.

The old man sighed as he pondered a blossom.  Such endless meetings are the price for peace, I suppose, he thought to himself.  Still tiresome as these imperials can be, I will take this monotony over what we had in the old days.

He wandered through the garden slowly, breathing in the smells, and trying to forget the scheduled meetings when a young page hurried up to him and bowed.  "Forgive me m'lord, but I've been sent to tell you that we have detected movements in Gurati space.  Countess Kadesh is mobilizing forces as well.  The council sent to me tell you there will be a meeting in half an hour's time."

Duke Lortran took a slow, deep breath, eyes closed and frowning.  "And so it begins again," he muttered to himself more than to the page.  "Tell the council I will be with them shortly.  Tell them to have a full report waiting for me when I arrive.  And tell them to send for Baron Marcos and Duchess Catherine as well."

"As you wish, M'lord," replied the page, bowing and hurrying off as quickly as he had come.

Duke Lortran continued to wander through the garden, lost in thought.  "The fools.  They probably don't even remember the last wars, beyond the tales their parents have told them.  Will we learn, someday?  I lost enough family fighting over the last sector.  I don't wish to lose anymore."

The Imperial Truthsayer reports:

The contest in this sector has goen live, as predicted. Even the most pacifistic nobles have begun mobilizing. In addition, numerous minor houses and offshots are waiting for an opportunity to interfere in this sector. Prognosis: large scale violence, imperial intervention necessary... soon-ish. The breeding programme might benefit from this conflict.

The Imperial navigator reports:

The four noble houses started maneuvering in earnest. Territorial gains have been large, mostly because there was no opposition. The largest gains were made by the Countess Kadesh, numbering five new worlds. Baron Gurati acquired three new worlds - one of those, Frost, through simple diplomacy. It seems the young Gurati leader has learned from the Duke. At the other corner of the quadrant, the Duke Lortran himself is much less fortunate, and an awkward initial wormhole placement to his home star leaves him with only two systems to add to his fief. Finally, Nitrix aded only one system, albeit the Gem rich world of Mox.

Duke Lortran sits at an antique table in his quiet room, studying a vid display screen filed with financial data, charts, and maps.  A young woman enters. Her long, straight red hair falls down her back, and her posture is perfect, though she seems somewhat tense.

"You sent for me, Duke Tycho?"

Duke Lortran looks up from the vid display, and smiles at the young woman for a few moments silently before speaking.  So different from her mother, he thinks, More controlled, a deeper thinker...But Catherine's fire is still there.

"Yes, Catherine, thank you for coming."  How like her mother to name her daughter Catherine as well.  "As you know, the wars have started again.  And as you know all too well, that puts all of us in danger, whether we take part or not."

"My mother was assassinated during the last wars, Tycho.  You need not remind me of the dangers," the young Catherine replied calmly, without malice.

Tycho studied her for another long moment.  "Yes.  In that case, I am hoping that you will apply your skill to the cause.  You will be a target regardless, and I am hoping that some of your mother's passion for this grim work was passed on."  He offered a weak smile, as if to indicate he was only half-serious about this last comment.

"I was still quite young when my mother died, as you well know, Tycho.  She had not seen fit to teach me the ways of conquest by that point.  What I know of politics, governance, and war, I have learned without her to guide me."  Her tone was dispassionate, not challenging, but Tycho sense the slightest hint of...something familiar there nonetheless.  Her blood runs colder than her mothers, but there is still a prideful streak there he thought.  The question is whether we can put that to productive use, or whether it will be her downfall.

The Duke nodded with a slight smile.  He let another long moment of silence pass before speaking again.  "Yes, I've been informed of your impressive education.  You will be a valuable asset to our House in this conflict.  Your mother and I did not always see eye to eye, to put it mildly, but I have a feeling you and I might work better together.  You have more patience than she ever did, I can see that much.  But the war will not be an exercise in a school book.  Our lives our at stake, as well as those of all who live on our worlds.  There will be little room for error.  Baron Marcos survived the last wars, and I've asked him to give you some pointers.  He's not one to waste words, so listen close to him.  He says little, but what he does say tends to carry a great deal of importance."

"For the moment, we lack the worlds to provide material for the conflict, so we must improve the output of the worlds we do control to make up for this deficiency.  The countess has wasted no time expanding her region of control, and we cannot afford to have her in backyard before we have had a chance to prepare.  See what you can do with the economy on Hellish for now."

"Of course, Duke Tycho.  Is that all?"  She seemed to Tycho not to be impatient, but at the same time, eager to get on with her duties rather than chat with her ancient relative.

Elleanora sat patiently through the debriefing.  A model of her noble upbringing, the rage at the futile delinquency of her minions never reached her smiling, warm charming face ... it remained deep within, burning white.
They had failed her again; while those impudent, uncouth rebels that the House insisted on harboring had achieved her victory instead.

Irulan Kadesh smiled at the message in from Harrion. “The Crusade advances!” her brother had sent. Her older brother had always been a better fighter than her, a better administrator and even more zealous; he would have been Count now, if he hadn’t given it up to serve Kadesh’s faith with all his heart. Perhaps that was for the best, though. There were other Houses attempting to control this sector; her brother would have dared them all and fought them head on, confident in his faith to bring him victory no matter what the odds. Irulan recognized that this situation called for subtlety.
Her cause had advanced, just as Harrion said. Five planets had joined her, making Kadesh the largest power in the system. Her House had long desired the valuable mines of Mercurium, though the fiery world of Scorch was less of a prize. The people of Kadesh had long felt a kinship to the tough Desert warriors of Quayat, but the robotic death machines of Computus and the Clone soldiers of Marx were seriously unsettling allies. But she’d need all the help she could get. The robotic war machines should at least please her allies in the Brotherhood of Machines.

The Imperial taskmaster reports:

Noble lords and lady, it is imperative that you designate the target of your "income" noble actions in your orders. Else, they will have no effect.

The imperial sages report:

Duke Lortran's House troops throw a spontaneous party for their commandrs before retiring to the red quarters of Punah's small cities after this pleasure world sided with Lortran.

The Duke's troops sent to Fah are not nearly as lucky. Sure enough, the planet is pleasant and hospitable. But there are no Amazonians, only a feelnig that the planet itself watches you.

Lortran nobles make a well orchestrated effort to build up the economy of Hellish. The Mercantile Consortium's connections are key to these fruitful efforts, and soon enough massive drilling rigs and mineral extractors swim ni the radioactive molten seas, churning out component for nuclear warheads and weapons by the crate. The leaders of the Consortium were seen rubbing their hands, a snakelike satisafction on their faces.

The Nitrix jumpship "Indomitable" suffered a major systems malfunction while in orbit over Mox. There were sloppily hidden signs of saboatge t obe found, leading to the Kadesh. Experienced observers pointed out that that evidence was too neatly planted and too easily found, and instead suspected the 5th sector Rebels.

Captain Caroline Kadesh joins the nobles on Kadesh. It remains to be seen what influence a new noble will have on the most numerous side's operations.

Ioannes Behcet, a minor noble in a Nitrix offshot house, entered service with his patron in this quadrant this season. he has yet to form any sort of reputation amongst the other nobles. Sarcastic voices point out the connection between the recent visit of the Surgeons of Silex to the Nitrix homeworld, and the fact that there is no house minor called Behcet registered in the galaxy.

The Colonial Rangers make peaceful contact with the elders of Pyreen. The verdant, peaceful world offers facilities for all the sides to come to an understanding. Other gains by the Nitrix include the shipyards of Yoravar and the research station of Dalton.

Aquara remains the only unclaimed world in the sector.

So, they were citizens!  So, they had done nothing wrong. What did it matter, their deaths would serve as an example: a warning to those who might decide to harbor spies in the future.

"You can hold your snickering.  I'm flattered that you still think me young enough to be driven by such urges, but sadly my interests in Punah are purely strategic," Duke Tycho says with a smile to his grey-clad advisers.  "The Kadesh expansion can be halted there without spreading our forces too thin.  If we can convince the Countess that the easier pickings lie in the direction of Gurati space, we'll buy ourselves a bit of time."  Some of the advisers nod silently. "And of course having troops with high morale defending our borders never hurt, either," the duke adds with a grin.  "I'll Send Baroness Carley there.  I'll need someone with a bit of youth there if I'm to gain the respect of the locals."

"I am sure the Punanites will adore you, m'lord, but what of our other border?  Fah gives little by way of resources or population, and invites a Nitrix strike."

In other times, Irulan might have been more than content to govern her eight-planet domain in peace. But these were not ordinary times, and the cause of the Kadesh no ordinary conflict. Of course, not everyone agreed. The Imperial Conscripts recruited from Sedeen had been little inspired by Harrion’s sermons. Still, they’d fight all the same, they had no choice. But she did, and she wondered sometimes whether she was the right woman for the job, or if she should have taken the place of her little sister Caroline, who had become a Stellar Pilgrim their her mother and commanded one of the small pilgrim jumpships. Well, now was not the time for doubts, but the time for action.

The imperial strategist reports:

Noble lords and lady, please remember that leaving a world with no ground units whatsoever makes it vulnerable to takeover by simple diplomacy.

The imperial sages report:

Another noble has joined the Lortran effort in the quadrant. Baroness Carley assumed her duties on the icy haven of Sanctuary. The exiled nobles from various noble houses residing there in their vast icy palaces greeted her with suspicion.

There are many movements of Lortran troops, but no decisive action towards either neughbor. It seems the Duke is biding his time, patient as always. Chances are, he will have his hand forced soon.

While he might not want to enter a military conflict, the Duke nevertheless managed to sweet-talk the Discordian Heretics away from the Nitrix and into his web of alliances. It remains to be seen what kind of addition their organizatino will make to the Lortran cause.

The Gurati also make plenty of strategic movement, repositioning their defensive nuclear arsenals and units. The Altar of Battle from Frost leaves its homeworld for the first time in centuries.

The Kadesh, meanwhile, entrench. On the diplomatic front, they use the power of the imperial aristocracy to lure the Arms Dealers from the Nitrix. Surely this shady organization must see the benefits of siding with the side bringing the most revenue to them.

The Nitrix have no luck in love or war. Their numerous attempts at diplomacy and intrigue all fail misearbly.

Aquaria remains the only world yet unclaimed.

Duke Tycho Lortran sips contemplatively at his tea in his quiet room.  He studies the star map, and trying to predict the point where the fighting will start.  Aquaria?  Dalton?  Yoravar?  Perhaps even Frost?  Or Punah if the Countess is feeling reckless.  No matter, our troops there can hold if she does.  But there will be chaos on her other border soon, and that might force her to turn our direction.  And there is always Fah, if the Nitrix run from the Gurati.  But running has never been the Nitrix way.  The duke frowns and lets out a sigh.  How many will be lost on Aquaria?  It seems it will be the cross roads of this conflict.  It's seas will run red with the blood of all four great houses before this is over.

The green, lush fields were home to a million species of insects, mammals, reptiles, birds and more: all beautiful in their own way.  It was a biosphere of balanced perfection.

The defection of the Arms Dealers had brought much needed funds to Irulan's cause. It was too bad she couldn't buy control of the sector, the other nobles wouldn't be bribed into giving up. But then, would I give up my cause for money? No, soldiers would decide this, and weapons... and the arms dealers would help there, too.

The Imperial Sage reports:

It has been a very quiet season. So quiet, in fact, that most observers expect the situation in this sector to degenerate into a furius orgy of nuclear fire and backstabbing within two seasons. Bets are already well underway, with whole planets being bid on the outcome. Many favor the currently strongest faction, but others point out that Lortran is the only house still headed by a noble of an advanced age.

In other news, a special contingent of Amazonians arrive at Lortran; those troops are mainly composed of younger daughters of Punah's noble families. They are promptly inaugurated as guardians of the Duke's palace. Any witty remarks are best hidden from the well armed and quite beeautiful warrior princesses.

The Church, long steeped in arts of diplomacy and overture, manages to secure the support of Aquaria's leadership for the Gurati. Thus the last yet unclaimed world has aligned itself in the sector. It remains to be seen how things go from here.

Sir Willem Kalgari, a lesser noble of no great distinction, pledged his support in this sector to house Kadesh.

Duke Tycho let out a rare sigh of impatience as the Discordian priest continued his diatribe.  "Yes, yes, I realize the urgency of your mission, and your...past disagreements with the pilgrims.  And I assure you that in due time you will have your chance to carry out your 'debates', but such movements take time.  Rushing forward into confrontation without a plan for holding any worlds we gain would be suicidal.  While your former allies may have favored such tactics, House Lortran prides itself on keeping it's troops alive.  There is a reason our most respected units are made up of veterans from former conflicts."

The Discordian forces a smile and a slight bow, but struggling to remain calm.  "Of course, Duke Tycho, it is as you say.  But we will not sit by passively while the church send their minions after us, chasing us across the sector, and making their absurd arguments based on ridiculous beliefs!"

As the heretic's voice rises, two well-muscled women appear behind him, each placing a firm hand on the man's shoulders.  "The Duke is a busy man," one says softly, "and we're afraid we'll need to escort you out, so that the Duke is not delayed for his next appointment."  Though the tone is more than friendly, the look they both give the man suggests arguing would be a very bad idea.

Tycho smiles as the towering women move the heretic towards the exit.  It may have been a mistake to bring them so far from the front lines, the old man thinks to himself, but they are serving an important role here, and doing so perfectly.  Those heretics are eager for combat, and the fools shall have it soon enough.  I don't like to send any man into danger, but I feel less guilt when at least it is what they crave.  I would prefer an army of these Amazonians to one full of the Discordians.  But would I be able to send such lovely creatures into battle?  No, the discordians have their place, it would seem.

Stanton didn't like the man; he was arrogant, and likely to do something that would get them all revealed and killed.
Spying on the royal family was dangerous, and with their Psionic abilities, a simple thought could give you away.

But he was here, and willing to assist; and in these dangerous times, Stanton knew, any ally was better than none.

Irulan had been surprised by the relative calm of the sector during these troubled times. But, sadly, she had no doubt it wouldn’t last. It was too bad; she rather enjoyed the peace and prosperity of these times. But crusades wait for no woman, and the issues of the day were larger than her.
