GURPS 3e Rules Chat

This thread is for questions and discussions regarding the GURPS Third Edition rules. It may be outdated, but plenty of people still use the old rules -- and with the breadth and scope of the books and resources printed for the system, there’s plenty worth talking about!

3e/ 4e spell effect

I was wondering about a spell, and the effects you would allow as a GM.
It might be the same in 4E.
In a Create Object (Duplicate, etc), would you be inclined to include something like a sheath when a PC creates a knife or sword? Would a suit of armor (presuming the cost is paid, I know it's based on 5# but can't recall how massive it would be for a whole suit) be considered a single item? What about, say, a rifle with a scope? Where is the point at which one item is really one item?

Nope. I'm pretty sure it just creates the weapon, but the weapon could be placed in an existing sheath or scabbard and still be considered 'close' enough to the wielder not to disappear.

Presumably. I know in Grimoire there was an optional rule about combining castings of Create Object and Create Warrior to have the warrior appear fully armed and armored. Expensive to cast, no doubt! But, if your GM would allow that, then presumably they would allow a suit of armor to be created as a single item.

Also, if you're using just the basic combat rules (not that I've known anyone to), a suit of armor really is one item. :P

As far as I recall, complex things like guns and cars can't be created with the spell. If you do allow guns to be created, though, I'd see no problem including a scope -- or even a tripod/bipod/whatever if needed. The character would need a good working knowledge of the exact weapon they're creating, in any case.

Re: 3e/ 4e spell effect

We always used a house rule that for more complicated objects, you could only make things that you knew how to make. Thus after an armoury or engineering roll, you could make some impressive stuff.

Re: 3e/ 4e spell effect

Of course, if you created the gun, you would need real ammo - once out of your range, imaginary bullets would just... vanish.

I had a game back on pbw some of you might recall, GURPS Northport, where one npc was a umana critically created armed and armored warrior  with compulsive truthtelling...  The pulse of his creation was felt by everyone with magery...

Opinions of the "whimsy" spell anyone? It was originally posted ont ehAG&G website (since defunct) It was essentially a spell that duplicated a "Wand of Wonder effect"

Re: 3e/ 4e spell effect

Yea, complex objects I always make a skill roll on the skill of whatever is appropriate. Thanks for your input, everyone. That should answer my question, it seems pretty unanamous. Pretty much what I was thinking, although the distinction does get pretty slim, doesn't it?
